1996 Toyota Tacoma problems
The Toyota Tacoma is a pickup truck manufactured by Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota since 1995. The first-generation Tacoma (model years 1995 through 2004) was classified as a compact pickup. The second generation (model years 2005 through 2015) and third generation (in production since 2015) models are classified as mid-sized pickups. The Tacoma was Motor Trend's Truck of the Year for 2005.
As of 2015, the Tacoma was sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Bolivia, Bermuda, and the French overseas collectivity of New Caledonia. Most markets across the world receive the Toyota Hilux in lieu of the Tacoma.
The name "Tacoma" was derived from the Coast Salish peoples' name for Mount Rainier in the U.S. state of Washington.

Common 1996 Toyota Tacoma problems
Based on complaints from owners of the 1996 Toyota Tacoma, several common problems have been identified:
- Saggy Rear Leaf Springs:
Owners have reported issues with sagging rear leaf springs in the Toyota Tacoma. This problem is more likely to occur with heavy loading or excessive vehicle wear over the years. When rear leaf springs sag, they need to be updated with aftermarket replacements. Brands like Deaver Spring and Alcan Spring are recommended for replacements. - Faulty/Leaky Water Pump:
Another common problem reported by Tacoma owners is faulty or leaky water pumps. This issue can lead to a slow leak, which may be detected by signs of water on the pavement after the truck has been parked for some time. The likely cause is a faulty seal, and the repair cost for this issue is typically under $100. - Jerking and Stuttering Problems:
Tacoma owners have experienced sensations of jerkiness and stuttering while driving. This could be attributed to various factors such as a misfire, bad spark plugs and wires, or a faulty torque converter. It is recommended to start with basic checks like inspecting spark plugs and wires, which should be done every 40,000 to 50,000 miles. Regular maintenance and inspection by a licensed mechanic are advised for a complete diagnosis.
These common problems with the 1996 Toyota Tacoma can range from easily fixable issues that require replacement parts and basic maintenance to more complex problems that may need professional expertise and advanced tools for repair. Regular inspection and maintenance can help address these issues promptly and ensure the longevity of the vehicle.

SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-02-14
- VIN: 4TAWN72N0TZ
- Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
- Summary: Rear passenger frame rusted/rotted, rear passenger shock mount completely torn off frame at rust area and rear passenger leaf spring assembly cracked. Vehicle is not drivable and completely unsafe. This vehicle was recalled in May 2008 for inspection of frame rust and passed the inspection with only surface frame rust found and no rust perforation. Vehicle was recalled again in January 2012 for Limited Service Campaign for New York vehicles for Frame Rust Corrosion, which it failed with substantial corrosion and rusted through holes in the frame. This vehicle was included in this second recall, however the terms of the recall for repair or buyback only extended for 15 years from vehicle’s ‘in service date’, which in this case meant this vehicle was 5 months outside the recall window. So, Toyota included the vehicle in the recall (actually mailed the recall letter), found it had unsafe frame corrosion issues upon inspection 3 weeks after receipt of recall letter, then washed their hands and walked away indicating the ‘in service date’ was 5 months outside the recall window. Makes zero sense and terrible customer service and warranty management.

Since 1985, I have owned two vehicles throughout my entire driving life. My first truck, a 1980 Toyota pickup, lasted until 1998 and had 550k miles on it before I gave it to my brother. I purchased my current vehicle, a 1996 Tacoma, as a replacement and was hoping for at least half the life of my first truck. So far, it has not disappointed me. With over 350k miles, it is still my daily driver and I wouldn't even hesitate to take it cross country. I have only had to replace a starter, clutch master cylinder, and all bushings and ball joints (even though only one failed). I have yet to replace the clutch, but it is starting to slip. If this one does give up, I will definitely buy another one.
Marlin Swift 2024-11-24
You are very dependable and there have been no problems of any kind.
Esteban Osinski 2024-11-07
This is my second small Yota pickup and it proves again that you can't go wrong in the reliability department with a Toyota. Needs a new clutch at 145K miles but other than brakes that is the only non-routine maintenance I can remember in 12 years of ownership. One tune-up and 2 brake jobs and 1 clutch in 12 years, can't beat that. It has never left me stranded.
Fabian Buckridge 2024-11-04
Wow, this sounds like an amazing vehicle! It's great to hear that you've had such a positive experience with it, and that it's been so reliable on your road trips. It's understandable that rising gas prices can be a concern, but it's clear that this truck has been a great investment overall. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Geovanny Baumbach 2024-10-26
Great truck! It's a shame Toyota stopped making them.
