2012 Audi Q7 problems
The Audi Q7 is a crossover SUV made by the German manufacturer Audi, unveiled in September 2005 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Production of this seven-seater SUV began in the autumn of 2005 at the Volkswagen Bratislava Plant in Bratislava, Slovakia.
The Q7 was the first SUV sold by Audi and went on sale in 2006. Later, Audi's second SUV, the Q5, was unveiled as a 2009 model. Audi has since unveiled a third SUV model, the Q3, which went on sale in the third quarter of 2011, and a fourth SUV model, the Q2, which went on sale in November 2016. The Q7 shares a Volkswagen Group MLB platform and chassis with the Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus, Porsche Cayenne and the Volkswagen Touareg.
The Q7 is the second largest vehicle from Audi, after its exterior size was being surpassed by the Q6 since 2022. While the Q7 has been the flagship SUV in Audi's product portfolio, a top-of-the-line model with a lower roof, called the Audi Q8, was released in 2018.
It was one of the vehicles involved in the Volkswagen emissions scandal, with the company ordered to buy back some of the affected cars manufactured between 2009 and 2012. The Q7 is also subject to hundreds of NTSB complaints with many relating to potentially catastrophic engine failure issues, and a class-action lawsuit related to squealing brakes.

Common 2012 Audi Q7 problems
The Audi Q7, a luxury midsize SUV produced since 2005, has been known for its advanced technology and spacious interior. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems.
One of the most frequently reported issues with the 2012 Audi Q7 is engine misfiring. This problem can occur due to faulty ignition coils, spark plugs, or fuel injectors. Drivers have reported misfiring or shuddering during idling or acceleration, and sometimes the check engine light illuminates after starting the vehicle cold. While some cases can be resolved by replacing the spark plugs or coils, it is crucial to have the vehicle checked by a professional, as misfiring can be a sign of more severe issues, such as problems with the pistons or cylinders.
Another common problem with the 2012 Audi Q7 is related to the knock sensor. When the check engine light comes on, indicating a problem with the knock sensor, it can lead to reduced acceleration and potential engine damage. This issue has been reported by owners of Q7 models ranging from 2007 to 2012.
The front headrests in the 2012 Audi Q7 have also been a source of discomfort for some drivers. Some owners have reported that the headrests tilt too far forward, causing back pain or neckache while driving. Although the headrests can be tilted further back, this may not provide a satisfactory solution for all drivers.
Some Audi Q7 drivers have also reported unusual popping or creaking noises coming from the intake manifold. This issue is caused by a worn purge valve on the intake manifold, which can increase engine emissions and cause further damage to critical engine parts. This problem has been reported in models from 2007 to 2012.
Seatbelt problems have also been reported in the 2012 Audi Q7. Drivers have reported issues such as fraying belts, rear seatbelts becoming unlocked from the locked position, and seatbelts that stay locked. In 2021, Audi recalled thousands of Q7s for a seatbelt locking retractor malfunction.
The Audi Q7 is generally considered a reliable car, with the second-generation model (2015-present) receiving a reliability rating of 92.8% and finishing second in the luxury SUV class out of a field of nine cars in a recent What Car? Reliability Survey. However, the brand as a whole ranked 26th out of 32 manufacturers in the same survey, indicating that there may be some room for improvement.
When considering the purchase of a 2012 Audi Q7, it is essential to be aware of these common problems and to budget for potential repairs and maintenance costs. While the Q7 is known for its advanced technology and spacious interior, it is crucial to ensure that the vehicle is in good working order and to address any issues promptly to avoid more significant problems down the line.

NOT TO MENTION THE PUMP'S ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS WAS SOAKED IN THE FUEL THAT HAD THE FUEL PUDDLE! THIS ISSUE SHOULD HAVE BEEN FOUND WHEN I HAD A RECENT SAFETY RECALL CODE 20W9 DONE AT AN AUDI DEALERSHIP JUST A COUPLE WEEKS PRIOR. IN ORDER TO FIX THE LEAKING ISSUE, I HAD TO BUY A NEW FUEL FILTER W/ FLANGE, "PROTECTIVE FILM", AND A SOME SEAL RING.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-05-15
- VIN: WA1LGAFE2CD
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: LOW OIL LIGHT CAME ON 3,000 MILES AFTER OIL CHANGE. NOTICED OIL ON GROUND UNDER VEHICLE WHERE IT IS PARKED IN GARAGE. TOOK IT BACK TO AUDI SERVICE CENTER AND THEY WENT OVER IT AND SAID THAT IT NEEDS THE PCV (PRESSURE CONTROL VALVE) REPLACED AS THEY HAVE SEEN THIS IN THE PAST ON SIMILAR ENGINES AND IT FIXES THE PROBLEM. THEY STATED THAT THERE IS A VALVE THAT IS NOT CLOSING ALL THE WAY AND OIL IS PASSING THROUGH AND IS BEING CONSUMED. THEY SAID THAT THE NEW PCV HAS A DIFFERENT PART NUMBER THAN THE ORIGINAL PCV AND IS MADE BETTER. IF NOT FIXED, IT COULD LEAD TO MORE EXPENSIVE MOTOR REPAIRS. I'M HAVING THE PCV REPLACED TOMORROW AT THE AUDI SERVICE CENTER FOR A COST OF $1,700 AND I HOPE THIS FIXES THE OIL CONSUMPTION. MY AUDI HAS 100,000 MILES ON IT AND I HAVE HAD NO OTHER PROBLEMS WITH IT. SINCE THEY SAID THE ORIGINAL PART HAS BEEN REPLACED WITH A "NEW AND IMPROVED" PART, SHOULDN'T AUDI RECALL THE ORIGINAL PCV AND OFFER A REPLACEMENT PCV SINCE IT SEEMS TO BE DEFECTIVE? THEY SAID THEY HAVE SEEN THIS OCCUR ON SIMILAR ENGINES WHICH LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THERE ARE MANY OUT THERE THAT REQUIRE REPLACEMENT. THE PCV COULD STAY OPEN AND YOU LOSE ALL ENGINE OIL AND THEN WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU'RE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY GOING 80 MPH?
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-05-17
- VIN: WA1DGAFE9CD

- Summary: TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 AUDI Q7. WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE PANORAMIC SUN ROOF EXPLODED INDEPENDENTLY. THE COVER TO THE SUN ROOF WAS IN PLACE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AUDI NORTH HOUSTON (17815 NORTH FWY, HOUSTON, TX 77090), BUT THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE DETERMINED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND A COMPLAINT WAS FILED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 52,000.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-07-29
- VIN: WA1DGAFE9CD
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: THE TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER PRESSURE LINE GOT A HOLE IN IT AND LEAKED ALL OF THE TRANSMISSION FLUID OUT. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THERE WAS PLASTIC THAT WAS VISIBLY SEEN RUBBING AGAINST THIS METAL LINE WHICH OVER TIME WORE THE LINE DOWN SO MUCH THAT IT CREATED A HOLE ALLOWING THE FLUID TO LEAK OUT. I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN I NOTICED THE CAR NOT WANTING TO SHIFT, DOWN-SHIT ETC WHEN I FINALLY PULLED OVER NOTICED IT WAS LEAKING FROM THE FRONT OF THE CAR. ONCE THE FLUID WAS JUST ABOUT OUT THE AUDI WARNING SYSTEM FINALLY NOTIFIED ME THAT THERE WAS AN ISSUE WITH THE TRANSMISSION. A TAD LATE IF YOU ASK ME. THE CAR WAS STARTING TO REV UP THE RPM'S THEN SUDDENLY IT WOULD SLAM INTO GEAR. I HAVE HAD THE LINE REPLACED AND NOW IT SEEMS LIKE I'M DUE FOR A NEW TRANSMISSION DUE TO ALL OF THIS. THE MECHANIC EVEN STATED HE HAS NEVER SEEN PLASTIC WEAR THROUGH METAL NOR HAVE I.. I QUESTION WHAT PATHETICALLY WEAK METAL WAS USED ON A HIGH PRESSURE LINE THAT WOULD ALLOW PLASTIC TO EVENTUALLY RUB THROUGH IT ALL. I'VE ASKED THE SHOP TO KEEP THE LINE AND TO SNAP SOME PICTURES FOR ME, SO I'M HOPING I WILL HAVE A CHANCE TO UPLOAD THESE ONCE I RECEIVE THEM.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-07-16

THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO UNIVERSITY AUDI LYNNWOOD (17315 WA-99, LYNNWOOD, WA 98037, (425) 743-7400), BUT THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,420.

- Summary: TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 AUDI Q7. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE RECALL NOTICE FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 16V660000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE) WAS RECEIVED IN SEPTEMBER. AFTER CONTACTING THE DEALER AND THE MANUFACTURER ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS, THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE PARTS NEEDED FOR THE RECALL REMEDY WERE STILL NOT AVAILABLE AND NO ESTIMATED TIME FOR RECEIVING THE PARTS COULD BE PROVIDED. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE. VIN TOOL CONFIRMS PARTS NOT AVAILABLE.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-06-01
- VIN: WA1LGAFE4CD
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: VEHICLE HAS A VERY STRONG GASOLINE SMELL AFTER THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TURNED OFF. THE ODOR IS ESPECIALLY STRONG IN A CONFINED SPACE SUCH A GARAGE. THE SOURCE OF THE ODOR IS NEAR THE DRIVER SIDE REAR TIRE. LIVING IN A VERY WARM CLIMATE, I FEAR THAT A FIRE MAY BE CAUSED BY THE STRONG FUMES COMING FROM THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY ARE AWARE OF THIS CONCERN AND ARE 90% CURTAIN THAT THE SOURCE IS THE FUEL PUMP. WHEN ASKED IF A SAFETY RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR THIS CONCERN, THEY STATED THAT NOTHING HAS BEEN REPORTED.
STEERING,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-06-03
- VIN: WA1DGBFE6CD
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: PULLING OUT MAKING A LEFT TURN FROM A STOP, VEHICLE SUDDENLY HESITATED, POWER TO ENGINE WAS INTERMITTENT AND JERKY, AND ACCELERATION WAS POOR TO NONE. MANY WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON (STABILITY, TIRE PRESSURE, ANTI-LOCK, ETC.). STEERING WHEEL WAS ALSO SHAKING SLIGHTLY (POWER STEERING MOTOR?). CONDITION CONTINUED FOR ABOUT A MILE WHILE VEHICLE PROCEEDED TO HOME. TURNING VEHICLE OFF AND ON RESOLVED THE PROBLEM. ON INITIAL CALL TO DEALERSHIP I WAS TOLD "THEY DO THAT SOMETIMES; YOU NEED TO TURN OFF/ON TO REBOOT SYSTEM". AFTER TAKING FOR SERVICE FOUR DAYS LATER NO ISSUES WERE FOUND OTHER THAN SOME "MISFIRING" CODES ON DATE OF EVENT. I WAS TOLD THIS WAS NOT A SITUATION THEY'VE SEEN AND NO SERVICE BULLETINS EXISTED ON THE BEHAVIOR. AS THE INITIAL PROBLEM CONTINUED UNTIL CAR WAS TURNED OFF/ON IT SEEMS LIKELY THAT THE INITIAL INFORMATION FROM THE DEALERSHIP WAS CORRECT AND THIS IS A COMPUTER CONTROL PROBLEM. WE HAVE OWNED THE CAR SINCE NEW AND NOT EXPERIENCED THIS ISSUE BEFORE. THE CAR CURRENTLY HAS ABOUT 60K MILES ON IT. FORTUNATELY THERE WERE NO INJURIES BUT A LOSS OF POWER PULLING INTO TRAFFIC IS A VERY SERIOUS FAILURE. IF THIS IS SOMETHING THAT "HAPPENS SOMETIMES AND YOU NEED TO TURN THE VEHICLE OFF/ON TO REBOOT THE COMPUTER", IT NEEDS ATTENTION AND NEEDS TO BE RECTIFIED AS A SINGLE OCCURRENCE IS ONE TOO MANY.

My first diesel was a 1975 Mercedes Benz 240d. Diesel technology has come quite a long way. This is my second Audi, and I must say, I am thoroughly impressed. I did not think the A6 could be beat, but Audi has managed to exceed my expectations. It is an amazing family car, with a huge size that drives smaller than it looks.

The Q7 replaced my Mazda CX-9, which comes off lease next month. I'm so glad I chose the Q7 after test driving 10 different SUVs. It's been a great experience so far and I'm really loving it! I'm especially happy with my choice of Orca black with gray interior. It looks fantastic in my garage!
-
I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to let you know that I've had my Q7 for 9 years and I've never had any problems with it. I always make sure to service it on time.

This vehicle has an incredible factory stereo system. The original owner opted for the $6300.00 optional Bang & Olsen 14 speaker, 1000 watt digital amp system, which is one of the best I've ever heard. The front dash speakers both raise up out of the dash for proper staging and clarity, and all of the speakers have aluminum grilles. No matter what type of music you prefer, the sound is amazing. The vehicle has an aggressive stance and look, thanks to the 295/35/21 in tires mounted on 21×10in wheels. Although I love the vehicle, my wife wants something smaller. We are considering the 2016 BMW M4 M edition and the Audi SQ5 S-Line. I bought this vehicle for my wife, and although I wish we could keep it, I understand her desire for something smaller.

Congratulations on reaching 1k miles on your Q7! It sounds like you have a great collection of Audis. The Q7 seems like the perfect family SUV, especially with the custom DVD entertainment for your kids. It's impressive that you're averaging around 20 mpg with a mix of city and highway driving. You mentioned testing out the 2010 X5 and Merc GL 550, but it seems like the Q7 has the perfect balance of sportiness and comfort. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I recently purchased a used 2011 Audi Q7 TDI Diesel in March 2021. It can be challenging for those living in countries without trained Audi technicians, as you may need to tow your vehicle all the way to the Audi service center.

Unfortunately, I am no longer a member of the Audi family. I owned my 2011 Audi Q7 for 6 years and for the most part it was alright. However, I did have some issues with maintenance. Despite having every service done at a Certified Audi Dealer, the thermostat went out just after the warranty had expired. Audi did not cover the repair, but they did offer to cover my service through 75,000 miles. Fast forward 2 1/2 years and my coolant light came on just 6 weeks after my 85,000 mile service. I took it back to Phil Long Audi here in Colorado Springs and was surprised to find that the thermostat needed to be replaced again, along with an additional 2K in suggested repairs. I contacted Audi of America and they offered me a 25% discount on the Thermostat repair only as a good will gesture. It's disappointing that they don't stand behind their product as long as there is a buck to be made. Despite how nice their cars are, I refuse to do business like that.
