2002 Honda Civic problems
The Honda Civic (Japanese: ホンダ・シビック, Hepburn: Honda Shibikku) is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1972. As of 2023, the Civic is positioned between the Honda Fit/City and Honda Accord in Honda's global car line-up.
The first-generation Civic was introduced in July 1972 as a two-door fastback sedan, followed by a three-door hatchback that September. With a 1,169 cc transverse engine and front-wheel drive like the British Mini, the car provided good interior space despite overall small dimensions. Initially gaining a reputation for being fuel-efficient, reliable and environmentally friendly, later iterations have become known for performance and sportiness, especially the Civic Type R, Civic VTi, Civic GTi and Civic SiR/Si.
The Civic has been repeatedly rebadged for international markets, and served as the basis for the Honda CR-X, the Honda CR-X del Sol, the Concerto, the first generation Prelude, the Civic Shuttle (later to become the Orthia) and the CR-V (which, by extension, was used as the basis for the Honda FR-V).
The Civic is one of the all-time best-selling automobiles in the world, with over 27 million units sold since 1972 as of 2021.

- Summary: For many months, I have been smelling gas inside the car even when the car has been stationary for an extended period. I recently did a Google search and found many reports and YouTube videos related to fuel leaks caused by a cracked fuel pump housing or module located under the rear seat. It can leak enough to leave a puddle of fuel where the housing goes into the tank. This has apparently been a problem for many years. The fuel pump works as it should and the engine runs fine. I removed the rear seat yesterday and found that I have this problem. It is severe enough that fuel visibly sprays out of the cracked housing whenever the key is in the on position and causes a puddle.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-03-04
- VIN: SHHEP33502U
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: RECURRENT AND UNSOLVED ISSUES WITH THE SRS AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT. IT WAS "REPAIRED" IN 2016, AGAIN IN FEBRUARY 2021, AND HAS RECURRED AGAIN IN MARCH 2021. I HAVE A HONDA CIVIC SI, WHICH WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE TAKATA RECALL PROGRAM. THE SI IS AN UNCOMMON MODEL OF THE CIVIC, AND I BELIEVE THIS IS THE REASON IT WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. I HAVE CONTINUED TO HAVE ISSUES OVER THE YEARS WITH THE SRS WARNING LIGHT COMING ON, AND NOT BEING ABLE TO HAVE IT EFFECTIVELY REPAIRED. ACCORDING TO ONLINE FORUMS FOR OLDER CIVICS, THE SRS WARNING LIGHT APPEARS TO BE A COMMON ISSUE. THOSE OWNERS RECOMMEND DIY REPAIRS AND WORK-AROUNDS. GIVEN THE LIFE-SAVING IMPORTANCE OF AIRBAGS, HONDA SHOULD BE REPAIRING/REPLACING THEM AS NEEDED.

Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Owners may contact Acura customer service at 1-800-382-2238, select option 4. Note: Vehicles that have had their driver frontal air bag replaced previously as part of a recall remedy prior to September 12, 2014 need to have their air bag replaced under this recall as well. Vehicles that, on or after September 12, 2014, received a remedy for a prior driver frontal air bag inflator recall already received an inflator of a different design, and therefore are not included in this recall and do not require additional servicing. Note: This recall fully supersedes recalls 08V-593, 09V-259, 10V-041, 11V-260, 14V-351 and 15V-153. Honda's numbers for this recall are JQ9, JR0, JR1, JR2, JR3, JR4, JR5, JR6, JR7, and JR8.

I was lucky enough to find a cream puff EX with only 31,000 miles, and it looks brand new! The rally red color is fantastic, and it's the best used car I've ever owned. I'm really enjoying the sunroof now that the weather is getting nicer. I added a remote starter (a must-have for Michigan winters) and a new set of tires, and it runs perfectly without any rattles. While it may not handle or perform like a 328i, it's still a great little car. The only surprise was the city mileage, which is around 28mpg with the automatic. But I'm happy to say that I have no payments and I love this car!
-
I like my car overall. It gets good gas mileage and has pretty good pickup for a four. Although I did have to get a new transmission, it was still under warranty so they replaced it for free. Since then, it has worked great.

What a great car! It's such a shame that it got totaled when someone ran into you. I can tell you really loved it and were hoping to get another 150k miles out of it. While it can be a bit noisy at high speeds, that seems to be par for the course in this class of car. You mentioned that you got an impressive 37 mpg over the life of the car, which is fantastic. I'm glad to hear that you didn't have any comfort issues, although it's a shame that your taller friend did. Overall, it sounds like the Honda is a reliable and efficient car that will last you a long time. The only thing to keep in mind is that it can be a bit noisy at speeds over 80mph due to wind. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

I am leasing this 02 SI for 3 years. As a Honda enthusiast, I have always owned Honda cars in the past. Although I wasn't initially impressed with the looks of this car, I changed my mind once I took it for a spin. It is a great combination of handling, power, and interior aesthetics, making it a fun car to drive. I also considered the Protege' 5, but I felt more confident in the refinement and dependability of a Honda. While the looks of the car could be improved with larger rims and tires, and maybe a body kit, it is still a great car for the money!

I got this car about two weeks ago, and I've loved it ever since I drove out of the dealership's parking lot. The transmission looked weird at first, but once you start changing gears, it becomes second nature to you. And the seat, it's just the best seat I have ever sat in! (Under $20K) It provides really good support to your back and torso, and the steering wheel gives you the feeling that you are driving an S2000 (no kidding!) To sum it up, the SI might not be the fastest car you've ever driven, but for a car that gives you so much fun (and standard equipment) well under $20K, who really cares? ;-)

I purchased this car used from a lovely elderly woman in Connecticut. She had recently replaced the rack & pinion before I picked it up, but unfortunately, the gas door had a problem of not opening once closed. Instead of fixing it, I latch it from the trunk behind the carpet to keep it sealed while driving. It's a bit tedious, but it saves me a fortune compared to going to the dealer to have it taken care of. When I first bought it, the car had 132,000 miles on it, and I got an amazing deal at $1,100. However, I did have to replace the frozen calipers myself for $200 in parts and three hours in a driveway. After that, I resurfaced the drums and replaced the shoes and front brake pads. The rotors are still original and holding up fine. Although the car seems incapable of holding any speed over 65 without shimmying back and forth, it's not the tie rods (they're brand new). The alignment was also just done along with two matching new tires, but the problem is still unsolved. Despite this, I get great gas mileage since I commute 102 miles a day round trip, and I average 31-34 mpg, which is not bad for an automatic. Even though it's the EX model, it seems very basic for features and nothing special. The special edition wheels bent immediately upon arrival to upstate New York since the roads are unforgiving, so I replaced them with four newer steel wheels. I just learned that it needs a new catalytic converter ($300), a new windshield ($250), new bushings and control arms front and back ($500), and new front struts ($200). Although I do enjoy the reliability, I guess I will have to repair it. However, next tax season, I plan to go out and buy either a GMC or a Toyota since, believe it or not, GMCs have been more reliable than the Civic with minimal repairs. The repairs are cheap for Honda, which I guess is a benefit, but they seem to need more in frequency, and I just don't enjoy it.Good basic commuter car! It's important to remember that it's not a race car, guys. I know it can be frustrating to see them with loud exhausts, but they aren't meant for street racing. With only 127 hp, it's not substantial enough for racing, except maybe if you're racing a Prius, and even then it's almost anyone's race haha.

I have a 2002 Honda Civic that I bought for its reliability. Unfortunately, the transmission went out while I was driving on a country road at 73 miles per hour, leaving me stranded for a long time with no option but to tow it. Now, I need a new transmission. In my experience, Honda is not as reliable as it is often made out to be and is not worth the price. It is no different from any other American-made car, or worse, much worse.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share some thoughts on my car with you. It's a second car that I bought with 130k on it, and now it has 144k. Since I gave my sister my other car, I'll be driving this one a lot more. I really love the exterior and interior design of the coupe. It's so sleek and has a surprising amount of room for a coupe. The only thing I wish it had was an armrest with a storage compartment. I've had to replace a few parts, like the A/C compressor, oxygen sensor, front rotors and brakes, ball joints, control arms, swaybar links, and battery. But since it's a Honda, the parts were all pretty cheap. I don't hold the repairs against the car, since these are all parts that are expected to go after 11 years. It drives really nicely and is quite comfortable. Interestingly, my cousin has the same car, but with over 230k on it!

This is a great car for getting around town! While it may not be the most sporty option out there, it still gets the job done and has fantastic fuel efficiency. Although some may prefer the 2000 Civic, this car has the added bonus of being able to hold a great sound system.
