1996 Pontiac Sunfire problems

pontiac logo

The Pontiac Sunfire is a compact car by Pontiac that was introduced for the 1995 model year to replace the Sunbird. Not only was the name changed, but dramatic styling changes were included as well. The new styling was shared with the redesigned Chevrolet Cavalier. The J platform was updated structurally to meet more stringent safety standards for the 1996 model year.

The Pontiac Sunfire went through two facelifts in its 11-year run: a small redesign in 2000 featuring the heavy plastic cladding look that was prevalent with Pontiac at the time, and a more streamlined update in 2003. In the US, the coupe was the only model available from 2003 to 2005. The sedan continued to be sold in Canada and Mexico until the end of production on June 22, 2005. GM replaced the Sunfire with the G5 for the 2006 model year in Canada and the 2007 model year in the United States.

The base model had the 2.2 L engine from 1994 until 2002. The GT trim level had an optional, more powerful 2.3 L Quad 4 engine from 1994 to 1995, which was replaced by the 2.4 L LD9 engine in 1995. The 2.3 and 2.4 litre engines were optional in the 2 and 4 door LS trim level. In 2003, both the 2.2 L and the 2.4 L engines were replaced by the 2.2 L Ecotec engine, and would be the only powertrain available for the remainder of production. The Ecotec engine was also an option for the 2002 model year.

At the time of introduction, the Sunfire was available with a three-speed automatic or a five-speed manual. General Motors had envisioned introducing a new four-speed automatic with the new car, but the company's cash shortage delayed this option until the next year.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-02-27
  • VIN: 1G2JB5240T7
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: FEBRUARY 25, 2009 - NOTICED WHEN USING THE TILT STEERING LEVER, THE STEERING COLUMN DID NOT LOCK AT CERTAIN LEVELS (LOWER POSITION). WITHIN A WEEK OF NOTICING THIS PROBLEM, I NOTICE THE STEERING COLUMN SEEMED LOOSE AND WHEN IT WAS DIFFICULT AT TIMES WHEN TURNING LEFT. IN ONE INCIDENT, NEARLY LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE WHEN ANOTHER VEHICLE VEERED INTO MY LANE ON THE FREEWAY AT SPEEDS OF 65 MPH. I HAD TO OVER COMPENSATE THE IMMEDIATE TURN TO AVOID LOOSING CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND CRASHING. MARCH 13, 2009 - NOISE HEARD WHEN TURNING OR STEERING THE VEHICLE. CHECK POWER STEERING FLUID - SLIGHTLY LOW, ADDED POWER STEERING FLUID - NOISE WENT AWAY. MARCH 14, 2009 - NOTICED POWER STEERING FLUID LEAK NEAR BOTH FRONT WHEELS. NOISE AGAIN HEARD - IT APPEARS THE RACK AND PINION STEERING IS THE PROBLEM. THIS WAS A PREVIOUS RECALL BY GM (NHTSA NO 02V286000) AND MY VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED IN 2003 BASED ON THE RECALL. FURTHER RESEARCH INDICATES THIS HAS HAPPENED TO OTHER CONSUMERS AFTER THE REPAIRS HAD BEEN MADE BY A GM CERTIFIED MECHANIC AT A DEALERSHIP. THE GM DEALERSHIP DOES NOT WANT TO REPAIR THEIR PREVIOUS WORK AT NO CHARGE. I BELIEVE THIS SHOULD BE REPAIRED AT NO COST TO ME, AS IT WAS A PREVIOUS RECALL, SERVICED WHEN NOTIFIED OF THE RECALL AND CONTINUES TO BE A PROBLEM THAT COULD OR WILL RESULT IN A CRASH OR INJURIES TO THE VEHICLE OCCUPANTS SHOULD THE STEERING LOCK-UP DUE TO THE RACK AND PINION FAILURE. MARCH 15, 2009 - TILT STEERING DOES NOT WORK AND THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKS IN ONE POSITION, ALL THE WAY UP AND TENDS TO EXTEND MORE LEFT THAN RIGHT. IT APPEARS A PIN ON THE STEERING COLUMN HAS FALLEN OUT AND IS LOOSE INSIDE THE STEERING COLUMN. REMOVED IGNITION COVERING AND FOUND METAL PIN FOR THE STEERING COLUMN HAD POPPED OUT, NOW CAUSING THE TILT STEERING TO LOCK IN THE MOST UPWARD POSITION AND EXTEND LEFT. RESULTS IN THE DRIVER OVER CORRECTING TO MAKE TURNS AND A CRASH WITH INJURY WHAMMY OCCUR. *TR

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-02-15
  • VIN: 1G2JB5240T7
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: FEBRUARY 2007 HAD VEHICLE SERVICED AND WAS TOLD REAR CALIPERS NEEDED REPLACEMENT. WORK WAS COMPLETED TOTALING $875. WITHIN A WEEK, THE BRAKES LOCKED, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO SKID AND FAILURE TO STOP. NEARLY HIT A PEDESTRIAN IN CROSS WALK AT 20 MPH. RETURNED TO SERVICE, WAS TOLD ADJUSTMENTS NEEDED TO THE ABS BRAKES SYSTEM. SERVICE COMPLETED. 4 WEEKS LATER THE VEHICLES BRAKE SYSTEM LOCKED UP AND A GRINDING NOISE OCCURRED. RETURNED FOR SERVICE, PADS REPLACED, BRAKES ADJUSTED PER THE MECHANIC. 3 MONTHS HAVE PASSED NOW AND NOW THE ABS BRAKE LIGHT ILLUMINATES PERIODICALLY AND NOW WITHIN THREE MONTHS OF REPLACEMENT OF THE BRAKE PADS AND ADJUSTMENTS TO THE ABS SYSTEM, I AGAIN NOTICE THE VEHICLE VEERING RIGHT WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES AND THE REAR BRAKES TEND TO LOCK AT SPEEDS OF 20 TO 35 MPH WITH A LIGHT SCRAPPING AND/OR GRINDING NOISE AGAIN. THE MECHANIC INFORMED ME THEY HAVE COMPLETED AND REPAIRED THE BRAKES TO THE VEHICLE SPECIFICATIONS AND CANNOT SERVICE ORE REPAIR IT ANY FURTHER. AFTER FURTHER RESEARCH, IT APPEARS SEVERAL OTHERS HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM OR INCIDENT OCCUR, UNFORTUNATELY RESULTING IN A CRASH. I AM REQUESTING A FURTHER INVESTIGATION TO BE COMPLETED ON THE GM ABS SYSTEMS FOR THIS VEHICLE. BRAKES SHOULD NOT HAVE TO BE REPAIRED OR REPLACED 3 TIMES IN A TWO YEAR TIME SPAN. THERE IS DEFINITELY SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE ASSEMBLY OR DESIGN OF THIS ABS SYSTEM. I HAVE REPLACED THE ROTORS, BRAKE PADS, CALIPERS ON THIS VEHICLE TOTALING NEARLY $2,000. I MUST COMMUTE TO WORK ON TWO MAJOR FREEWAYS IN LOS ANGELES, WHICH IF AN ABS FAILURE OCCURS, COULD RESULT IN A CRASH WITH SEVERE OR FATAL INJURIES TO MYSELF AND/OR PASSENGERS IN THE VEHICLE. *TR

  • Components: STEERING:RACK AND PINION
  • Summary: CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES AND MINI VANS HAVE LOWER PINION BEARINGS IN THE POWER RACK AND PINION ASSEMBLY IN WHICH THE RETAINER TABS WERE NOT CRIMPED PROPERLY. THESE AND SOME OTHER RETAINERS USED IN VEHICLES ASSEMBLED BETWEEN JANUARY 1, 1996 AND OCTOBER 31, 1997, COULD FAIL AND PERMIT THE BALL BEARINGS TO ESCAPE.
  • Consequence: IF THIS OCCURS, THE PINION SHAFT CAN BE FORCED UPWARD DURING LEFT TURNS AND BACK DOWN AS THE STEERING WHEEL IS MOVED BACK AND TO THE RIGHT. IF THE PINION SHAFT MOVES FURTHER, THE DRIVER WILL NEED TO EXERT MORE EFFORT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL, SIMILAR TO A VEHICLE WITHOUT POWER ASSISTED STEERING. IF THE PINION SHAFT MOVES EVEN FURTHER, THE DRIVER WILL REQUIRE MUCH HIGHER EFFORT TO TURN LEFT AND MAY NOT BE ABLE TO TURN THE WHEEL AS MUCH AS INTENDED. WITH THE MAXIMUM PINION SHAFT MOVEMENT, WHICH REQUIRES INTERNAL GEAR COMPONENT DAMAGE, THE DRIVER CAN ENCOUNTER HIGH RESISTANCE TO TURNING LEFT, FOLLOWED BY UNINTENDED POWER ASSIST TO THE RIGHT. IN ANY OF THESE CONDITIONS, A CRASH COULD OCCUR.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW LOWER PINION BEARING UNLESS INSPECT OF THE EXISTING BEARING INDICATES THAT REPLACEMENT OF THE GEAR ASSEMBLY IS NECESSARY. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JANUARY 24, 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-222-1020, PONTIAC AT 1-800-762-2737, OR OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-442-6537.

Negative 1996 Pontiac Sunfire car reviews

I've had this car for almost 4 years now and it's been pretty reliable. While it didn't quite live up to my expectations as a sports car, it's been great in the snow, which was a pleasant surprise. While it may not be the most fun car to drive, I can't complain about its reliability. People often ask me why I'm getting another car, and I simply respond that I'm looking for something faster. Overall, I've had a good experience with this car.

In 2010, we purchased a 1996 Sunfire Coupe in black with a 4-speed automatic. Although it was nothing special, it proved to be a reliable car for us. It withstood a 45 km commute five days a week for three years, and then a year of intense city driving with a new driver. Despite some issues such as rotting and a broken exhaust, it held up for a year and a half. Towards the end of its life, it did lose some power, but overall, it was a fine car. We bought it with 220,000kms and scrapped it when the fuel pump finally went at 305,000kms. We had the transmission rebuilt prior to purchasing the car, and in four years, it had four oil changes. There really isn't much to complain about.

I have owned this car for six years and have always been diligent about getting regular maintenance, including oil changes and tire rotations. I have also replaced the spark plugs twice and had to deal with three recalls on parts. Unfortunately, I have noticed a new noise almost every month and the dash has been rattling since I first got the car at 12000 miles. Despite taking it to multiple mechanics, no one has been able to fix the issue and some have even said that it is just how the car was made. While the car looks nice, the combination of all the different noises makes it quite noisy and I often have to have music playing (coming from the only working speaker since the other one is blown).

My car had persistent issues from the beginning, requiring frequent repairs and significant financial investment. Despite my diligent maintenance, it ultimately proved to be unreliable.

  5. Alfonzo Nitzsche 2024-05-17

My 96 Sunfire's 2.2 in-line 4 cylinder engine unfortunately ceased at only 91000 miles, despite my consistent oil changes every 3000-4000 miles. However, the car ran well and achieved good gas mileage. I replaced the rear brakes once and the front brakes three times. Around 80000 miles, the air conditioning and heater fan switch only worked on high, but the air conditioner always blew ice cold air.

Positive 1996 Pontiac Sunfire car reviews

  1. Jerel Blick 2024-11-13

My first car was a '96 Sunfire GT coupe with Dual Overhead Cams, Dual Exhaust connected to a 2.4 litre engine. It was perfect for me as a 17-year-old, as I could either make a tank of gas last a good while or get from point A to point B in half the time. Most of my friends were driving Hondas with their V-Tech engines, so I had my friend, who was efficient in metalwork, create an aluminum plate that fit snugly on the cylinder head cover with the words P-Tech written across it, which I painted V-Tech red. I was then able to sneak into their Honda-themed meets since I looked so official. I obtained the car in 2006, and the story behind it was that it was owned by one previous owner who happened to be the daughter of a Pontiac Dealership franchise owner. She maintained all of the paperwork from all of the maintenance, and even had the window sticker still from when the car had been first driven off the lot. It had the MSRP of $19,995, which I later found out was because I had the most expensive model of Sunfire with all the bells and whistles and options possible. It made sense considering the backstory, but it was still incredibly awesome to be 17 years old in my decade-old car that had power everything, steering wheel controls for the stereo, and even had a FOB remote that had a trunk open button. Pretty impressive for a 1996 model. That car was put through a lot and managed to successfully handle everything I put her through, including driving from Pullman to Seattle in a blizzard so bad that we were the only ones on the highway for the first leg of the trip. It was essentially a complete whiteout that you could barely even walk through, and there was my car chugging along with my drunk friends, one passed out in the back and the other up front annoying the crap out of me.We made it back home with relative ease. After the many years since then, and having owned and driven countless cars, I can now truly grasp how impressive that performance really was. Back then, I had no idea. Since that was my first car, I had no perspective and just thought that all cars could handle such a trip, especially with such a new driver behind the wheel. That trip alone proves the dependability factor that car commanded. I miss that little White 1996 Pontiac Sunfire GT Coupe. The funny thing is, my car now is a 2.4 litre, and is an ACTUAL V-Tech Acura TSX, yet for some reason, I remember my Pontiac being just a tad quicker and snow capable. If you're ever in the market for a first car for your teen, but don't have the largest of budgets to spend, or perhaps you're teaching them the value of a dollar and making them pay for their own vehicle, definitely consider this very modestly priced option as it will do everything you need it to do safely, and even quickly if you're nice to her and take care of her as you should with any old lady. I'm certain this is a car that will provide them with all the same nostalgia-inducing memories that it has done for me. It's a good car, and that's why I gave it 4 out of 5 stars!

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my Sunfire. I bought it back in September 2004 with only 10,700 miles on it, and I have to say, I've had no problems with it at all! It runs like a champ, and I've been sure to keep up with regular maintenance, like getting new tires, replacing the brakes, flushing the cooling system, and even replacing the exhaust system. It's even passed state emissions tests with flying colors! I really love this car and plan on keeping it for a long time. In fact, I like it just as much as I did my '79 Pinto and '83 Mustang. Thanks for listening!

  3. Hardy Schamberger 2024-10-07

This car is really fun to drive! It has plenty of pick up (it's a 5 speed) and gets great gas mileage (28 city/33 highway). I will admit that you feel every bump in the road, but hey, you feel them in a $50,000 Corvette too! Plus, it was a real bargain when you consider the money saved on gas.

  4. Randal VonRueden 2024-10-02

The Pontiac Sunfire is such a reliable car! I've been driving mine since I was a senior in high school, and it's now 7 years old. I've never had a single problem with it. They're just great!

  5. Alexys Hand 2024-10-01

I am so glad I bought this car! It's not perfect, but it's affordable, gets great gas mileage, and my mechanic husband says it's easy to maintain. I haven't had any major problems with it and it runs great. Plus, I just love the way it looks!
