2012 Jeep Compass problems
The Jeep Compass is a compact crossover SUV introduced for the 2007 model year, and is currently in its second generation. The first generation Compass and Patriot, its rebadged variant, were among Jeep's first crossover SUVs. The second-generation Compass debuted in September 2016 in Brazil and at the Los Angeles International Auto Show in November 2016, sharing a modified platform with the Renegade. It is positioned between the smaller Renegade and the larger Cherokee globally or the Commander in South America.
Concept
Four years prior to the introduction of the production Jeep Compass, a concept vehicle with the same name had its world premiere in Detroit at the 2002 North American International Auto Show. It featured a two-door body, all-wheel drive and a 3.7-liter V6 engine.
The 3.7 L Power-Tech V6 engine from the Jeep Liberty was not available in the new Compass for 2007, though the production model Compass kept the concept car's styling cues and some of its features. The production model Compass also had four doors instead of the two doors on the concept car.

Common 2012 Jeep Compass problems
The 2012 Jeep Compass has several common problems that may affect its performance and reliability. These issues are based on complaints from owners of this car.
- Brake Grinding: One of the most common problems with the 2012 Jeep Compass is when the brakes are grinding. When a brake rubs, it produces a lower-pitched sound different from a squeaking brake. Also, stopping and decelerating feel different with grinding brakes. Worn brake pads or foreign objects are the potential causes.
- TIPM Failure: The Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) failure is another issue that affects the 2012 Jeep Compass. If your TIPM fails, it may result in problems like stalled engine, horn going off randomly, faulty power windows, airbags not deploying, and more.
- Airbags: The 2012 Jeep Compass has been recalled for a software error that delayed or didn’t deploy the side airbags. If the airbags are delayed or don’t go off during a rollover, passengers are at an increased risk of injury.
- Fuel/Propulsion System: The 2012 Jeep Compass has also been recalled for an incorrectly manufactured fuel transfer tube, which can cause the engine to stall and increase the risk of a crash.
- Powertrain Performance: The 2012 Jeep Compass struggles with powertrain performance, resulting in acceleration problems, clunky handling, and engine noise. Along with these issues, the Compass has been recalled four times.
- Engine and Exhaust: The most common 2012 Jeep Compass problems include the sound of the engine and exhaust. Error codes and engineering designs that affect the airbags, engine performance, and fuel lines are behind four recalls of the 2012 Jeep Compass.
- Seat Material: The feel of the seat material is another common problem with the 2012 Jeep Compass. Some reviewers noted problems with visibility and ease of access because of tall door sills.
- Water Leaks: Water leaks from the roof area are also a prevalent issue with the 2012 Jeep Compass. This problem can lead to electrical issues and interior damage if not addressed promptly.
- Handling on Curves: Given that the Compass was recalled for leaking fuel in the event of a rollover, the vehicle's handling on curves could be a potentially severe complaint.
- Overheating Transmission: Frustrated owners claimed that their Compass’ CVT transmission is prone to overheating, which can lead to severe damage and expensive repairs.
- Rear Brake Noise: The 2012 Jeep Compass has also been reported to have a loud noise coming from the back brakes, which can be alarming, annoying, or both. A service bulletin was issued to install an anti-vibration bracket on the rear brake calipers to address this issue.
It is essential to note that these problems may not affect all 2012 Jeep Compass vehicles, and some may not experience any of these issues. However, it is crucial to be aware of these common problems when purchasing a used 2012 Jeep Compass. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent or address these issues before they become severe problems.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-15
- VIN: 1C4NJDEB0CD
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The vehicle just went through an inspection with the dealership before being sold to me. The vehicle is stalling when making turns and driving. There are no warning lights, there is a full tank of gas, no warning of it going to happen and it just stalls. The Jeep stalled at an intersection, stalled driving through a parking lot and again today stalled turning from an intersection. It almost caused me to get rear ended in an accident. Luckily they did not but that was scary enough for me to check for recalls and to my surprise there is for my year and type but not my VIN, my vehicle was manufactured April 2012, does not have high miles and should not be having these issues.

Recently my check engine light came on and off, changed the fuel gas cap, and had a code read. My mechanic mentioned that there was a safety recall regarding the manifold ? if so was this ever done and where I would like documents provided. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-17
- VIN: 1C4NJDEB8CD
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I’m in Bradley, Illinois, and after the first snowfall, these indicators lit up. The ABS, the ESC, and the 4WD. I thought because of inclement weather, they would go off, but have remained lit for a couple of weeks now. One day, while driving to work, the throttle lagged, and I couldn’t accelerate past 20 mph for over 10 minutes amidst heavy traffic. When this occurred, the ABS light turned off, then suddenly lit up again, and the truck sped up. This has happened several times. I was told all recalls were repaired, so I am wondering if this is a new concern? Please advise. Thank you for your help and time.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-07
- VIN: 1C4NJCCBXCD
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: - The passenger headrest of my 2012 Jeep Compass Limited deployed while the car was in motion on the highway with no reason to deploy. Yes, the component is available for inspection. - This created a distraction to the driver that could have resulted in an accident and also could have injured the passenger. - The dealer mentioned that the issue has happened to other cars, but in my case they could not help me because my car is not under warranty. They told me they could not assist and requested I call Jeep Customer Care. - Jeep Customer Care replied ""We have review the information on your case and sadly found that we are unable to offer any assistance with the head restraint repair." - The vehicle component has not been inspected. - No warning lights, messages or symptoms of the problem
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-01
- VIN: 1C4NJCBB2CD
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: The rear suspension crossmember and suspension control arm rotted out on my 2012 Jeep Compass. Also, cross member cracked. Two repair shops inspected the damage and told me that I should be very careful driving the vehicle to get it repaired because there wasn't much hold the rear wheel on. They both said that the problem cause cause a catastrophic failure, which would lead to the rear wheel falling off. At highway speeds this might cause a serious accident. Both repair shops also said they have seen a lot of Jeeps with this type of rust damage. The steel used for the components must have been inferior or the factory rust protection on these components was inadequate. There are probably thousands of older jeep models (Compass, Patriot, etc.) driving around in a dangerous condition. The only warning that I got was a slight squeaking noise when I went over bumps. The sound would be fairly normal for an eleven year old vehicle. But, I decided to get under the car and spray some liquid lubricant to try to eliminate the squeak. The crack in the crossmember was up high on the underside of the car and it was difficult to see. Luckily, I noticed that the component was entirely cracked in two pieces. The second repair shop told me that Jeep extended the warranty on the components to 10 years. This was due to the large number of similar issues reported. Although the 10 year period ran out in my case in September 2022, I still plan to contact Jeep to see if they will reimburse me for a portion of the repair. But, I believe that a recall should be issued before some Jeep owner is seriously injured due to this problem. The repair cost is in the thousands of dollars. I have attached a photo showing the crack in the crossmember.
SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-01
- VIN: 1C4NJCBA0CD
- Components: SEATS
- Summary: The passenger active restraint headrest exploded spontaneously. The vehicle was not in any accident. I happen to notice one morning that the headrest was deployed due to no known issue. Appears this has happened to numerous other people and not sure why this make/model issue has not come under a manufacturers safety recall.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-18
- VIN: 1c4njdeb9cd
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: When driving the vehicle will hesitate then stall after refueling. Happen after almost every refueling case. Believe it is a stuck rollover valve that is allowing gas to enter vent lines and causing the stall. When accelerating the vehicle suddenly dies and there is a complete loss of all systems. No power steering to help get off the side of the road. Often there are no Check Engine Lights or other warnings. Obviously if your engine suddenly dies when accelerating this can cause major safety concerns. I had this happen 3 times while trying to merge onto an interstate. Thankfully I was in the right lane and able to get off to the shoulder and avoid an accident. Have not had a mechanic verify but it is a very common problem with these vehicles and the manufacturer needs to address this.

The sensors were replaced; however, the vehicle was taken to another dealer for the catalytic converter replacement. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 146,000.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-04-14
- VIN: 1c4njdeb9cd
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: -The front subframe of the vehicle is rusted out. They never offered a recall only a service advisement(thus not informing owners of the potential issue). My subframe was found to be rusted out in a yearly state inspection but is 2 months past their extended warranty date. Therefore they deny financial responsibility to replace the part. -Driving with a rusted out subframe can cause the vehicle to loose control and crash. -The problem is acknowledged by the dealers but they refuse to issue a recall to alert everyone to the problem, therefore allowing the vehicles to go beyond the extended warranty timeframe then refuse to pay for the repairs. -The vehicle has been inspected by a licensed mechanic and issues have been documented. -There were no warning signs or issues prior to the inspection which found the corroded piece.

Negative 2012 Jeep Compass car reviews
Positive 2012 Jeep Compass car reviews

I recently traded in my Honda CRV for a 2011 Jeep Compass and I am extremely pleased with my decision. Initially, I was considering the Chevy Equinox based on Edmonds ratings, but after speaking with people I know who owned one, I heard nothing but negative feedback. Although I don't go off-roading, I do drive in various weather conditions such as ice, snow, and rain to get to work, so 4WD, affordability, and safety were my top priorities. A few friends of mine recommended Jeep, and I can confidently say that I am very happy with my choice. In my opinion, the cabin is not noisy at all - I actually thought the CRV was much louder. While it may be a little slow on pick up, it's not significantly worse than the CRV.
-
I'm really happy with my purchase! I bought the 2wd 2.0 5Spd Manual and have already been through 3 tanks of gas. Although I don't count the first one because I'm not sure if the dealership filled it all the way, I got 30.1MPG and 30.9mpg on the 2nd and 3rd tanks (calculated manually miles/gallons). I absolutely love it and hope it just keeps getting better. I drive about 90% on the highway, going 65MPH or less. I also have a ScanGaugeII that helps with my driving technique, so I'll probably improve the MPG even more. I chose this car because it's great value for money compared to others.
-
The new design is a significant improvement over the old one. The continuously variable transmission has been retuned, resulting in a quieter and smoother ride. As someone who has sold these vehicles for years, I can assure you that if it wasn't a great product, I wouldn't have recommended it over the Liberty.
-
The car was very stylish, but unfortunately it was quite compact on the inside. Despite purchasing a CVT transmission with 4x4, I found that the space was limited, especially in the back seat and cargo area. However, it lasted me a long time and I used it for everything from camping to off-roading, and even as a daily driver. The mileage was a little low, even for highways, at about 21 combined, without any aftermarket modifications. Overall, it was a good car, but I decided to upgrade to a Subaru Crosstrek for more space, AWD, and a higher lift.
-
I bought this car brand new after turning in an H3 lease vehicle. I was a bit apprehensive because it was an American made car, but my experience with the Hummer gave me confidence. I didn't do any prior research, but it has been very reliable! However, I haven't achieved the mileage on the sticker, neither in the city nor on the highway. The road noise is quite loud, so I'm planning to get soundproofing done. I rarely have passengers, but so far no one has complained (except for my Viking son who needs to be up front). The map lights have leaked a few times, usually because I left the sunroof up during an unexpected rain. The brakes can be a bit noisy at times, starting from the second year of ownership. I'm hoping to drive it until it dies or until I get tired of it.

In 2011, I was forced to purchase a 201 Compass brand new. Unfortunately, with three kids, the back seat is too cramped for them. Additionally, the car itself is quite small. I had to take it in for repairs due to a noise and it turned out that the front lower arm controls were broken. Thankfully, they were still under warranty and were replaced. However, the day after I got them fixed, I backed out of my driveway and heard a loud cracking noise that sounded like plastic breaking into a million pieces. To make matters worse, the creaking noise returned. I have been too busy to have it fixed, but I can tell that the steering is bad and every time I hit a bump, I hear the creaking. Overall, I am not a fan of this car!

I purchased my 2011 Compass in December of 2013. Although I initially loved my Jeep, I soon realized that the gas mileage was not great. It only gets around 240 miles per 16 gallons around the city, and that's during the summer when the traction is turned off. After a few months of ownership, the side plastic piece along the passenger seat broke from simply getting in and out of the seat. Unfortunately, today, in January of 2015, at 37K miles, it had to be towed twice due to computer issues not sending signals to the fuel pump. I am looking forward to getting a new vehicle and hopefully avoiding these issues in the future!

Hello! We have been loyal Jeep customers for years, and when my wife saw the 2011 Compass redesign advertised on TV, she just had to have one. Unfortunately, we've been experiencing some troubles with our new 2011 Compass. The key fobs and TPMS system have failed, and the first attempt to repair it resulted in a 3.5 hour waiting room stint with no solution. We were disappointed to find out that there were no loaner cars available. We left the car at another dealer for a week, but they were still unable to fix it. After only 3 weeks of ownership, we are feeling quite frustrated. We hope that Chrysler Customer Assistance can help us resolve these issues. Thank you for your time.

We would advise against considering this option due to the constant issues such as oil leaks, failed bearings, rust, and broken differentials. We have spent a significant amount of money trying to fix these problems. Please let us know if you have any questions or if we can assist you in finding a better alternative.

I've had this car for four years now. I bought it used with only one previous owner and 29,000 miles. Unfortunately, after just one year of having the car, I had to replace the transmission. Thankfully, I had purchased an extended warranty, but it was still a bit of a headache. Fast forward another year, and every time I turn on the air (hot or cold), there's a loud clicking noise that comes from inside the dashboard. While it doesn't affect the car's performance, it's very annoying to listen to whenever I want air on in the car. And a few months later, my AC went out in the middle of summer. I've had a few issues with this car, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. However, there's always a chance of a
