The Jeep Compass is a compact crossover SUV introduced for the 2007 model year, and is currently in its second generation. The first generation Compass and Patriot, its rebadged variant, were among Jeep's first crossover SUVs. The second-generation Compass debuted in September 2016 in Brazil and at the Los Angeles International Auto Show in November 2016, sharing a modified platform with the Renegade. It is positioned between the smaller Renegade and the larger Cherokee globally or the Commander in South America.

Concept

Four years prior to the introduction of the production Jeep Compass, a concept vehicle with the same name had its world premiere in Detroit at the 2002 North American International Auto Show. It featured a two-door body, all-wheel drive and a 3.7-liter V6 engine.

The 3.7 L Power-Tech V6 engine from the Jeep Liberty was not available in the new Compass for 2007, though the production model Compass kept the concept car's styling cues and some of its features. The production model Compass also had four doors instead of the two doors on the concept car.

  • VIN: 1J4FF47B99D
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Jeep extended the warranty for the front and rear body subframes. I had my vehicle inspected at the onset of the warranty. I again had an inspection done at my local dealer on 4/15/2022. Since that date the vehicle has been driven approximately 7000 miles. A week ago as I was making a turn at traffic speed I heard a thumping sound. On 11/12/2023 with the vehicle on jackstands it was confirmed that the rear subframe on the drivers side had completely broken and the subframe on the passenger side was rusted through as well. I called Jeep US on 11/14/2023 and it was stated that the warranty was no longer in effect with them. I believe the inspection was either not completed properly or the damage was already in process. This could have resulted in a horrific incident as there were no warning signs and thinking that the inspection had not shown any potential hazard.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-05-24
  • VIN: 1J4FT47A29D
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: I was informed about my rotting subframe on my 2009 Jeep Compass about a year ago. I took it to a Jeep dealer for a second opinion as well as contacted Jeep. I was told about some extended warranty that I was not eligible for. Now, 1 year later, my vehicle will not pass inspection without replacement of the subframe. I contacted Jeep again. Of course, since this was extension of warranty, only the original owners were notified. This should have been a recall. This is a safety hazzard and should not have happened to vehicle just over 10 years. Jeep purposely did not issue a recall to save money.

  • VIN: 1J4FF47BX9D
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: SEEMS TO BE AN ISSUE FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE THROUGHOUT CHRYSLER VEHICLES. I WAS DRIVING WHEN THE ENGINE CUT DOWN TO 30 MPH AND INDICATOR LIGHTS CAME ON, ENGINE LIGHT, TRACTION CONTROL AND "RED LIGHTNING BOLT" (ETC ELECTRONIC THROTTLEBODY CONTROL). WHAT IS HAPPENING IS YOUR COMPUTER HAS DETECTED SOMETHING WRONG AND HAS GONE INTO LIMP MODE WHICH IS ALLOWING THE VEHICLE ONLY ENOUGH POWER TO GET OFF THE ROAD (LIMP OFF THE ROAD). IT APPEARS DEALERS AND MECHANICS DON'T KNOW OR AREN'T TELLING. DON'T TELL THEM I HAVE THE SOLUTION, THEY ARE IN BUSINESS TO MAKE MONEY OFF OF YOU, DON'T GIVE THEM A HAND UP. THEY MAY WANT TO REPLACE YOUR THROTTLE BODY WHICH THEY CHARGE OVER $1,000 FOR AND IT DOESN'T FIX THE ISSUE. THE PROBLEM IS CALIBRATION BETWEEN YOUR ACCELERATOR (GAS PEDDLE) POSITION SENSOR, COMPUTER AND ETC (THROTTLE) SENSOR. IT WILL COST YOU $0 AND 10 SECONDS TO SOLVE. GET IN, TURN THE KEY TO "ACCESSORY" POSITION JUST BEFORE TURNING THE ENGINE ON. LET ALL THE INSTRUMENT LIGHTS ON THE DASH RESET. ENGINE, "RED LIGHTNING BOLT" AND (IF EBRAKE IS ENGAGED) BRAKE LIGHTS SHOULD BE ON. NOW PUSH THE ACCELERATOR PEDDLE TO THE FLOOR AND COUNT TO TEN. THE "RED BOLT" LIGHT SHOULD NOW TURN OFF AND YOU HAVE JUST RETEACHED OR CALIBRATED YOUR POSITION SENSOR. TURN THE KEY BACK OFF AND THEN TURN ON YOUR VEHICLE AND ENJOY THE RIDE.

APPARENTLY THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING ISSUE AND JEEP REFUSES TO RECALL THIS. 2007 HAD THE SAME ISSUE AND THEY EXTENDED A "WARRANTY" TO GET THIS FIXED. 2009 IS MADE, OBVIOUSLY WITH THE SAME JUNK METAL, AND YET THEY REFUSE TO FIX THEIR INCOMPETENCE. WONDER HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE DIED DUE TO THIS NEGLIGENCE. NOT HAPPY JEEP.

Negative 2009 Jeep Compass car reviews

  1. Tyler Erdman 2025-02-22

This vehicle has several issues that need to be addressed. The sunroof leaks heavily, causing damage to the electrical units underneath and staining the ceiling. The passenger side back seat floor also leaks all year long, leading to continuous wetness and freezing in the winter. Additionally, the brakes wear out quickly and the vehicle is prone to rusting. Despite these issues, the manufacturer's warranty covered the overheating and blown thermostat at 75,000 miles. However, the vehicle does not hold its value well. The 4-wheel drive also experienced issues when first purchased, but the dealership eventually identified and resolved the problem. It is recommended to consider these issues before purchasing this vehicle due to the presence of blind spots.

  2. Lonzo Mills 2025-02-21

Let's start with the downside - the low profile tires on this model were a bit weak. I would recommend purchasing the next size up, such as the Hankook Optimo 727's at 215/65 with 44 pound tires and 17' rims. While these tires may decrease your fuel efficiency by 2 mpg, they provide much better climbing ability in snowy conditions, which is essential for those living in Pittsburgh. Now for the good news - this 4x4 gets an impressive 23-25 miles per gallon on the highway and 20-22 in the city, with some drivers even reporting up to 27 mpg on long trips. That's truly remarkable! In terms of off-road performance, I find it to be equal or better than the Liberty, especially in mud and snow. Additionally, the spacious interior comfortably accommodates tall passengers, with even my 6'6 friend having a couple of inches to spare. Plus, the adjustable seats make it easy to find the perfect driving position. Overall, this is a fantastic vehicle that I highly recommend.

Hi there! I noticed that you've had some trouble with your 2008 Jeep Compass. It sounds like you've had to replace a few parts recently and it's been frustrating for you. Have you considered taking it to a mechanic to get it checked out? I understand that you're on a fixed income and can't afford to keep fixing it, so it might be worth exploring some other options. On the bright side, your 97 Saturn with 236,000 miles sounds like it's been a reliable car for you! Thanks for sharing your experience with the Jeep Compass.

  4. Francisco Bins 2024-11-28

During the cash for clunkers program, my family and I were interested in purchasing a Patriot with 4wd. Unfortunately, we were unable to find one anywhere in the country. As a result, we decided to purchase a Compass instead. However, we have encountered some issues with the vehicle. The seat is too narrow for my comfort, and the seat belt digs into my right thigh while driving. Additionally, the high seat backs in the back row obstruct my view of the next lane, making it difficult to change lanes. Despite these issues, the handling is fine, the looks are great, and the fuel economy is okay. I am considering selling or trading this vehicle due to the discomfort it causes me.

  5. Jerry Kub 2024-08-26

I bought this car after a Liberty because I was trying to save on gas. Although I saved on gas, I found that I lost elsewhere. Unfortunately, as a person who is 5'10, I found that this car is not suitable for tall people. The roof is not like other cars and when I pull up to stop lights (on the white line) I have to duck my head to see what color the light is. However, I do appreciate how it whips around corners and handles great. Despite this, after having this car for a week, I have decided to return it. I wish the roof was better and didn't have the extra material by the windshield. It seems that Jeep missed the mark with this one for tall people.

Positive 2009 Jeep Compass car reviews

  1. Kamron Harber 2025-02-11

What a great road trip! We drove 2163 miles and were pleasantly surprised by how smooth the ride was in such a small vehicle. The seats are at just the right height for those of us over 65 to get in and out of with ease. The gas mileage was impressive, ranging from 24 to 29 MPG, and the MPG computer was spot on. Even when going up and down hills, we never felt the transmission shift - it was truly amazing. The car fits perfectly in our garage and handles the roads with ease. My wife loves it so much that I think I'll get one for myself too. I opted for the 2.0 engine and it has great pickup.

  2. Kristopher Marks 2025-01-23

This is a great small SUV! I've driven both an 07 Ford Escape and a 06 Toyota Highlander, but the Compass is by far the most fun to drive. While it may not be the most powerful, the car-like handling more than makes up for it. Plus, I've found that the fuel efficiency is even better than the stated 25mpg - I'm getting around 30mpg in the city and 40mpg on the highway! Admittedly, it felt a little sluggish at first, but once I got used to the CVT nuances, I found that the performance improved significantly. And despite my 6'6

  3. Robin Gibson 2025-01-09

You've made a great choice! I'm happy to hear that you haven't experienced any engine or transmission problems. The front wheel drive, front disk, and rear drum brakes are all working well. Although it wasn't recalled for sub frame rust, the dealer was kind enough to split the cost on the front one. Another dealer even gave you a rear one for free! With 168,000 miles on her and driving 150 each day, it's impressive that you're still getting 25 mpg. Keep up the good work and she'll continue to perform well!

  4. Moriah Stamm 2024-10-16

I shopped until I dropped and found issues with all SUVs. What ultimately sold me on the Jeep Compass was its price and lifetime powertrain limited warranty. With an MSRP of $19,450.00, minus $4500 cash for clunkers, minus $3500 Chrysler rebate, and minus $2500 cash back from my dealer, I was able to get a very nice SUV for around $10,000.00. It rides well, is easy to park, and is fun to drive.

  5. Adolph Adams 2024-09-12

Hey there! I'm so glad you're considering the 09 Compass. I wanted to share my experience with you because I read some reviews for the 08 Compass before purchasing and I'm so happy I didn't rely on them. The 09 Compass has addressed all the complaints from the previous model, with a redesigned interior that looks great, additional noise dampening for a quiet ride, and a smooth transmission. It's also really fun to drive and has great pickup for a 4 cyl. engine. I was originally looking for a 6 cyl. vehicle, but after a test drive, this one won me over. Plus, the fuel economy is good and the price is fantastic. Personally, I think it looks best in red, blue, or orange - the other colors make it look a bit long (just my opinion). Overall, I give it a solid 9 - definitely test drive one for yourself!
