The Volkswagen Atlas is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured by the German automaker Volkswagen since 2017. Developed mainly for the North American and Chinese market, the vehicle is based on the Volkswagen Group MQB platform. Outside the US, Canadian, and Chilean markets, the vehicle is marketed as the Volkswagen Teramont. It is positioned above the long-wheelbase Tiguan and below the smaller but more upmarket Touareg.

Overview

Marketed as the Atlas in North America, Chile, and Israel, the vehicle is known as the Teramont elsewhere, including the rest of the Middle East Africa, as well as in Mexico, Russia, Colombia and China, where production in Ningbo began in 2017. For markets outside China, the Atlas/Teramont is produced in the Chattanooga plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States.

The vehicle features a transverse mounted four-cylinder or Volkswagen's VR6 engine. Up to the introduction of the China-only Viloran, the Atlas was the largest vehicle produced on the Volkswagen Group MQB platform.

Common 2022 Volkswagen Atlas problems

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas has been reported to have several common problems by its owners, primarily related to the electrical system and the emergency brake system.

One of the most common electrical problems is the automatic windows rolling down on their own, particularly during cold weather. This issue has been reported to occur even when the vehicle is parked and the keys are hung up, making it difficult to determine the cause. Additionally, the infotainment system may not turn on instantly, and there may be delayed touchscreen and sound responses. Some owners have also reported issues with wireless phone charging and Advanced Road Sign Recognition systems not working correctly.

Another electrical problem reported is related to the start-stop system, which has been known to cause battery drainage within just two months of use. In some cases, this has also led to transmission failure. A clockspring, which is an electrical rotary part of the steering system, has also been reported to make noises when steering.

The emergency brake system has also been a significant issue for 2022 Volkswagen Atlas owners. The Forward Collision Avoidance Emergency Braking System, which uses sensors onboard to detect an imminent collision, has been reported to not work correctly. This has caused many trips to VW dealers, and in some cases, the emergency braking system has failed to stop the car during an emergency.

The engine and fuel system have also been reported to have issues. Many Atlas owners have complained about the check engine light illuminating randomly, which could be caused by faulty fuel injectors known to be cracking and leaking. This can lead to engine stalling and an increased risk of fire. A recent recall has been issued to fix this problem, and faulty fuel pumps have also been reported to cause engine stalling and power loss.

Coolant leaks have also been a problem for some 2022 Volkswagen Atlas owners. This can lead to engine overheating and should be alerted by the low coolant light on the dashboard. Faulty head gaskets, coolant tanks, and water pumps are the usual causes of this problem.

In summary, the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas has several common problems, primarily related to the electrical system and the emergency brake system. These issues can cause inconvenience, safety concerns, and costly repairs. Therefore, it is essential to be aware of these problems and consider them before purchasing this vehicle.

  • Summary: While operating the vehicle at about 50 to 60 mph the automatic emergency breaking system activated without warning and with no vehicles in front, and violently slammed on the breaks causing the vehicle to go into emergency stop in the middle of the highway. This then caused numerous vehicles following to take measures to avoid crashing into the rear of our vehicle. Numerous lights and warning lights started flashing on and off and parts of the screens went black and turned off and on. The car then kept the breaks locked down and we had to limp the car along the shoulder of the road to the dealership to have them look at it. This incident jeopardized the Safety of my family and other drivers and passengers around them. The dealership has not been able to replicate this issue so far. Prior to this incident the technology portion of the vehicle stopped responding, and we were unable to link devices to the vehicle.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-26
  • VIN: 1V2FR2CA8NC
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Panoramic Sunroof on VW Atlas spontaneously exploded. It is at the dealership currently for repair which I was told was an "outside" force that hit it, which is not true! My entire family was in the car while we had to be out of our house for a showing and while returning home we heard what sounded like a gunshot and glass breaking. I started shaking and my husband's ears started ringing it was so loud. I immediately, looked around and asked my kids if they were ok, and they stated yes. We looked up and as we heard wind and above our heads we saw the sunroof explosion. If we didn't have the sunroof shade shut glass would have rained in on us while we drove down the road. The dealership and VW refuse to take responsibility for the $4300+ repair. I was forced to claim it on my insurance which I assume was going to take care of it after reading numerous other reports that the dealer wouldn't take responsibility. There was no prior notice there was any issue with the vehicle.

Negative 2022 Volkswagen Atlas car reviews

  1. Cicero Christiansen 2025-01-09

This vehicle wasn't the best. The parking brake engages when you stop at a light and there are warning bells that continuously ding when stopped, with an error message saying 'warning engine running'. There were also numerous faults saying 'doorContact faulty' with constant warning bells dinging. The interior could have been better. However, I'm glad it was just a rental.

On Dec 18/20, we picked up our 2021 Atlas R Line from the dealership. Unfortunately, we have had to visit the dealership 5 times in the past 5 months for an issue that remains unresolved. Despite this, the service team has been very helpful and we appreciate their efforts. We have been videoing the problems and sending them to the service manager. The infotainment system seems to be the problem - we've had continued intermittent issues with the bluetooth not working for phone calls and playing music, radio volume shuts off and we can't bring the volume up, backup camera freezes or goes black, and climate control doesn't work. The car has had two new radio modules installed in an attempt to fix the ongoing issues. While we have experienced some issues, we still love the vehicle and are hopeful that these problems will be resolved soon. We would recommend the vehicle once these issues are fixed.

I recently took my two month old atlas with 5000 freeway miles on it to the dealership for an oil change. Unfortunately, I was told that it needed a four wheel alignment and four new tires. After contacting Volkswagen, I was directed to a regional manager who was able to clarify the situation and informed me that it was all a mistake. Although the dealership was wrong, I was given the option to pay for an alignment check or to simply forget about it. Additionally, I have noticed that the cruise control does not work when the vehicle is remote started, which has been a known issue for years. Despite this, Volkswagen has been working on a software fix. While I was initially frustrated with the situation, I would recommend considering other brands such as Kia or Hyundai. Thank you for your time.

I recently drove a 2021 VW Atlas SEL around San Diego for airport runs. While the car had some great features, I found the handling and steering to be quite challenging. The lane assist feature kept kicking in at odd times, causing the car to move unpredictably, and I couldn't find an easy way to turn it off. Additionally, the integration with Apple Play was not great, especially when using Waze. The driver's screen would go half blank with a message saying that the nav was using another app, and the speed was not prominently displayed. To make matters worse, the audio cut out entirely, and I couldn't get it back no matter what I tried. On the plus side, the car is relatively quiet with low wind noise, and it's reasonably quick. The Fender sound system is also great once you figure out the interface. Overall, I had some challenges with the car, but it did have some great features. I'm trading it in for a mini-van soon.

The car has had several issues, including the steering rack and multiple o2 sensors. Despite these challenges, I was able to obtain a new 2021 model through the lemon law. While there have been some electrical issues, there are known problems that the manufacturer has yet to address. I am currently considering my options for the future, but I am hesitant to purchase another VW.

This vehicle gives you so much room and is laid out so well! All creature controls are easily accessed without feeling cramped inside. Power delivery is substantial with either engine or drivetrain. It's a wonderful vehicle to drive!

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with you. As a parent of 4 kids, I recently went on a search for the perfect family car. After looking at all the top 3 row SUVs and large SUVs, including the Palisade, Pilot, Highlander, Telluride, Atlas, Expedition, Tahoe, and Suburban, I found that the Atlas was the best option for me. It offers great features and size for the price, and is the largest of the 3 row crossovers. Plus, it's much easier to drive around town and more affordable than the larger SUVs. Even though the space isn't noticeably different from the Suburban and Expedition Max, car seats fit great and getting into and out of the third row is easy for the other kids. I ended up getting the SEL R-Line 4Motion, and I'm so happy with my choice. Originally, I was looking at the SE with Tech, but the digital gauges and large sunroof were worth the upgrade in trim for me. I hope this helps you in your search for the perfect family car!

The 2021 WV atlas SEL premium now comes with the RLINE package without any deleted features, which is a great improvement from the 2019 VW atlas SEL premium with Rline package. Previously, the power folding mirror, area view/360 camera and park assist were all gone, but now they are included.
