The Hyundai Sonata (Korean: 현대 쏘나타) is a mid-size car that has been manufactured by Hyundai since 1985. The first generation Sonata, which was introduced in 1985, was a facelifted version of the Hyundai Stellar with an engine upgrade, and was withdrawn from the market in two years due to poor customer reaction. While the nameplate was originally only sold in South Korea, the second generation of 1988 was widely exported.

The Sonata is currently manufactured in South Korea where their headquarters are located, China and Pakistan. It was named after the musical term, sonata.

First generation (Y1; 1985)

The first Sonata was introduced to compete with the Daewoo Royale series and was a more luxurious version of the Stellar. It included cruise control, power seats, head lamp washers, power brakes, electric operated adjustable side mirrors and chrome bumper trims. The Sonata was available with two trim options in Korea: Luxury and Super (the latter only available with a 2.0-liter engine). In the domestic market Hyundai attempted to sell the Sonata as an executive car using catchphrases like "Luxury car for VIP"; however, as the Sonata was based on the Stellar without any major changes, it was seen by the public as no more than a luxury version of the Stellar. In 1987 Hyundai added two tone color schemes and a trip computer option, but sales soon went down and the car was discontinued in December of that year. The Sonata was sold only in the South Korean domestic market. The vehicle was unveiled in South Korea on 4 November 1985.

Engine choices included 1.6-liter Mitsubishi Saturn (only available outside the domestic market), 1.8- and 2.0-liter Mitsubishi Sirius inline-fours. The latter unit also found its way into the 1987 and later Stellar, and in MPI form the 1986 Hyundai Grandeur. The body was a largely unchanged Hyundai Stellar.

It was sold in New Zealand (right hand drive) with the 1.6-liter Mitsubishi engine with the five-speed manual gearbox; an automatic transmission was an optional extra. The original importer was a unit of the Auckland-based Giltrap Motor Group.

The final version of the Stellar was known as the Stellar 88 and was launched to celebrate the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Afterwards, Hyundai discontinued the Stellar and replaced it with the all-new Sonata.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-26
  • VIN: KMHL14JC9PA
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: For like the fifth time while I'm driving the car just dies. I can be going 55 I can be going 70 and the dashboard lights up like a Christmas tree and the car just dies. I have to pull the car over to the side and I have to turn it off and restart it again. And then about 3 days later the check engine light will go away. This seems like a software issue but Hyundai and my local dealer cannot help me I'm going to get killed in this thing. I can't take it on the highway I can barely take it down the street because it could go out on me while I'm driving and I could be in the middle lane and I could get killed. They tell me they can't replicate the issue but it's a software issue somebody needs to do something before I get killed. Every single light on the dashboard turns on and the engine just dies. This is like the fifth time this has happened. I think this car is a lemon but no one will help me.

POWER TRAIN,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-10
  • VIN: KMHL14JA4PA
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: On 4 occasions in the last 4 months when I push the gas my cars rpm will go up but the car does not accelerate. This has happened twice on the interstate when trying to merge with trsffic and twice in city traffic, once when making a lefthand turn across oncoming traffic and once just driving down the road. I have taken the car to 2 separate dealerships for a total of 3 times and they drive it a few miles and tell me they can't duplicate the issue. I just picked my car up today after leaving it for 6 days. On my way home the emergency breaking system activated for no reason slowing my car down on the interstate. Both of these issues could get me or someone elas killed. I have not even had this car for 2 years and I am afraid to drive it. Please help. I know I am not the only person with this issue because I can see others on the internet who also have been told that the dealership can't dupe the problem. Even the dealership I just picked it up from said they had another car there with the same problem that they can't duplicate so there is nothing they can do.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-04
  • VIN: KMHL64JAXPA
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: While driving on the country side, my car engine stopped providing power to the car and started making some noise. The engine rpm would fluctuate and increase due to downshifting but there was no power. Luckily, the car had some speed around 50 mph, the road was slightly downhill and nobody was behind, managed to coast to a gas station half a mile away. The engine shut itself off after the car stopped. I was able to restart the car but it would shut itself off within 2 seconds of restart. Car was towed to the dealership and I was told that it had a faulty injector. The injector was replaced a week later and I received my car back later.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-16
  • VIN: KMHL64JA9PA
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: My name is [XXX] , and I am the frustrated owner of a 2023 Hyundai Sonata SEL. For context, I am a [XXX] woman who had never experienced the frightening event of a “brand new” car breaking down—until now. I am still in shock and trembling from the experience I had with my “new” 2023 Hyundai Sonata on the morning of [XXX]. At 9:30 a.m., I was driving on [XXX] . I was driving the speed limit (55 mph) and cruising along when, all of a sudden, as I went to accelerate, my vehicle instead began decelerating rapidly. I pressed the gas pedal, thinking I might have let up too much or accidentally had my foot on the brake. However, pressing the gas only caused the RPM to spike, with no change in my speed. I had to act quickly, paying close attention to the surrounding traffic as my car slowed down. Thankfully, I managed to maneuver from the far-left lane to the shoulder of the highway. My speed had dropped to around 30 mph and was decreasing. Trying to safely navigate a slowing vehicle on a highway filled with traffic is an adrenaline rush I wouldn’t wish on anyone. I was in a state of severe panic. As I steered the car onto the shoulder, I noticed it was shaking and struggling to move forward. White smoke was also coming from the exhaust. Once safely stopped, I put the car in park and turned off the engine to let it cool down. After a few minutes, I restarted it and noticed the engine, oil, and battery indicators were all illuminated on the dashboard. My first thought was a battery issue, but the car was still able to turn on. However, the engine did not start. A notification appeared, stating the car was not in a condition to be driven. After receiving the car back from the Hyundai Dealer I was notified that the issue was due to fuel injectors failing. POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-02
  • VIN: KMHL14JC3PA
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I have been having transmission issues the whole time I've had the car. There is a delay upon take off, and it bogs down instead of downshifting. I was driving my son to school and made a left turn. It started to go but then delayed for 10 seconds before suddenly taking off. If the on coming traffic had been closer, they would've hit us. The dealer has reproduced the problem but can't get enough information for the tech line to approve a new transmission even though the dealership has repeatedly said that is what it needs. I've never had a warning light on it. it's been in the shop for it this time since 7/26/24.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-11
  • VIN: KMHL64JA8PA
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: On 3 separate occasions the vehicle decelerated, lights flickered and stated to produce a burning smell through the engine. Each time the car would not allow me to accelerate and eventually stalled out. The car would no immediately start. After a few minutes it would start but not accelerate. After about 30 minutes it would start and would drive about 5-15 mph, enough to get me to my location. On the first occasion I was coming home late in the evening after working a 12 hour shift and had to have a family member get me after being stranded by the side of the road. The second time I was taking my 4 to son to his planned surgery in a bigger city and it broke down on the way. It was not safe driving in the city barely being able to excel but we did it for my son. The third time I was in a larger time in traffic and missed an appointment as I tried to stear my decelerating vehicle out of multiple lanes of traffic to a safe location. I could not use the air conditioner while I attempted to let it rest in 100°+ heat. Each time the lights would flicker and dim. There would be a smoke from the exhaust. After the first 2 occurrences we took it to the dealership but they were not able to replicate the problem or identify a causative code. During the last occurrence we were able to get it to the dealership very slowly and they deemed it to be the fuel injector malfunctioning. This was fixed after about a week or so of being in the shop . About a week or two after the fuel injector was fixed the check engine light came on. We took it back into the service department and they "reset" the system thinking it was an error. The light came back on in less than 24 hours. The vehicle has been running a little harder, not as fast or responsive as normal. A service/evaluation date was scheduled and the code was checked indicating it was likely the catalytic converter. We scheduled another service appointment once the part was in which is 2 weeks from the evaluation appointment.

POWER TRAIN,SEATS,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-09
  • VIN: KMHL44J2XPA
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,SEATS,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Hello, I have Hyundai Sonata 2023. The fuel tank of this car is expanded on [XXX]. I have never heard about this issue to any cars. I took my car to dealership they said they don’t know why this happened and they said they cannot fix it, my car at the dealership more than a month. I have created a case with Hyundai corporate office in CA, it’s been a month since this case was created and I could reach out to my case manager only twice for this period of time. They are keep saying they are working on it, but no results they don’t even look at my car. Today I barely could reach my case manager and she told me that this is not under warranty and I will need to fix it out of my pocket. When I bring the car to the dealership they told me this not under warranty since warranty was up to 60k miles, I have 90k I asked them to fix it and I will pay but they said they don’t know how to fix it. Today I have researched and found that this issue is really common among Kia K5 and Hyundai Sonata’s 2021 2024, I will provide a link here: [XXX] Please check this link and you can see that most of the cars fuel tanks are expanded and back seats popped up. I have same exact problem. Kia asked drivers to inspect the cars with this issue and they said they will fix it for free since this is fuel tank defect. But what should I do with my Hyundai Sonata. I have same exact issue as you see at the link I have provided. I had powertrain DTC PO451 since march of this year dealership said just check if gas cap is on properly, but this caused this issue I see Hyundai will not help me it will almost 2 month I don’t have my car and I am still paying for it, please let me know what I can do Thank you! POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-19
  • VIN: KMHL14JA7PA
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: I was driving on the interstate at interstate speeds and the car started to lose power. I was able to steer the car to a safe location and call roadside assistance. It appears that the engine control system had a failure in one of the control modules. The problem was reproduced at the time that I dropped the car off with the service center. The history of the issues for the vehicle are available. My safety was put at risk because the car lost power at high speed and I was only able to limp to a safe location. No warning lights happened until the issue was already taking place. After being notified by my Hyundai app, I was able to discover that the vehicle had a history of having this code (I have only owned the car for 32 days)

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-25
  • VIN: KMHL34J26PA
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: 2023 Hyundai Sonata Limited, 1.6 T. Battery discharged within 10 days while parked. This problem is well known to dealership. The dealership has to jump start cars and start them frequently on the dealership lot. It is impossible to park this model car at an airport or parking lot for more than a couple of days and maintain a battery charge. No warning or alerts. The problem is that the RESERVE amp hours of the standard stock battery is not adequate to supply the electronic drain of computers while parked.

STEERING,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-24
  • VIN: KMHL14JA0PA
  • Components: STEERING,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: On two separate occasions, one at @9500 miles and the next at @19,000 miles the car engine started shaking and lost all power while driving. Unable to steer car. Both times towed to dealer and they say it needs new spark plugs and need to clean cylinders. They do not know root cause of problem and have not done any testing of the engine, no leak/compression testing. Dealer refuses to cover cost of repairs saying out of warranty but cannot give any assurances this won’t happen again. I’ve requested they contact Hyundai engineers to find out what’s causing this and, to date, they’ve done nothing. Vehicle is unsafe to drive and is still at dealership with no reason to underlying issue.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-29
  • VIN: KMHL14JCXPA
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
  • Summary: I have had three occasions where the dashboard lights would flash and the car would lose all power. The first occasion occurred on December 29th at around 12:20 pm at a crowded intersection. The dashboard lights lit up and all of a sudden the car had no power at all. I managed to get it through the intersection and pull it off to the side of the road. To start it up I have to TURN OFF THE CAR by putting it in park and start it up again. This is stressful and terrifying to think about if this had happened on the freeway. Additionally, I took the car to get serviced and was charged a $1,800 bill to fix it in January. This repair took two weeks to complete. The car has since turned off two additional times on February 15th going down a hill at 40 mph and March 26th on a mountain road going 60 mph. I am very concerned this will happen on the highway and I will get into a serious accident or worse. To make matters more difficult, I have taken the car back to the Hyundai dealer again to have it looked at in April and will most likely be without the car for at least another week. I bought the car brand new and the check engine light has gone off four times since then.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-18
  • VIN: KMHL64JA6PA
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Took a trip to the grocery store, and started up my car when I got back. The engine turned over but after a few seconds, it stalled. Tried this again, but lightly pressed the accelerator. This raised the RPM, but it dropped quickly and stalled the engine again. Made a couple more attempts after and eventually, the engine light came on. Shortly before this incident, I had about 10-15% of gas left in my tank. After this happened, bluelink reported that I had 1% left. Got the vehicle towed to the dealership, where they confirmed the condition and found that the fuel injector for cylinder 3 needed to be replaced. I consider myself lucky that this happened while my vehicle was parked. This would've been a huge safety concern if it happened out on the road.

Negative 2023 Hyundai Sonata car reviews

I bought this 2017 Sonata out of desperation. Although it drives like a boat, I discovered that the trunk can be a bit tricky to open. Unfortunately, there is no external button or lever to access the trunk when the latch is broken or accidentally switched to valet mode. It can be frustrating, but I'm sure there's a way to fix it. Who knows, maybe the design team can come up with a solution to make it more accessible in an emergency.

This is my 3rd and last new Sonata. While I have enjoyed previous models, I have noticed a decline in user-friendliness over time. If you prefer a car that allows you to simply turn it on, put it in gear, and go, this may not be the best option for you. There are a few features that require disengagement before starting out, such as the automatic parking brake and engine start/stop mechanism. Additionally, the push-button gear shift mechanism may require multiple attempts to engage. There are also some issues with the computer screens randomly changing modes. However, with some patience and practice, these features can be mastered. Overall, the Sonata is a reliable car with many great features.

Hi there! I noticed that your car vibrates a lot at 70 mph and the gear system is not as good as the Accord's. It also seems to take a lot of power to start. Have you considered getting it checked by a mechanic?

Glad to hear that you're enjoying your new car so far!

I highly recommend buying this car if you can find it! This is actually my fourth Sonata purchased in the last 16 years. While we've always liked the cars, they were a bit boring, so we sold the last three over the years. However, I needed a good commuter car for the next 6-9 months until retirement. We found a dealer about 90 miles from us and test drove the 2022 Sonata N-Line. I was immediately sold on this car after only a short test drive. The ride is tight, but not overly stiff, and the Bose system is great. It will take a few hours to break in the speakers, but it's worth it. I purchased the one single available option, summer tires, for $200. The Sonata has driving assist that will keep you centered during long commutes, borderline self-steering (you have to keep touching the wheel around 30 seconds). Driving on the highway is a dream. In Normal mode, the car is a great family vehicle with comfortable seats. Now for the fun stuff: in Sport mode, the Sonata comes out of its shell to hang with some of the sportier cars in its class. Traction control is engaged, the steering is stiffer, and the exhaust gets louder. In Sport Plus, you are on your own, traction control is off, and the car gets even louder (how is this possible?). It can go from 0-60 in 5.2 seconds, which is not bad for a car around $35,000. The top speed for the Sonata is about 150 mph - really! So far, my only complaint is that they should have an AWD option in the future. The Sonata N-Line is truly Hyundai's hidden gem. You should definitely consider buying it.

I love everything about my car! From the vibrant red color to the amazing drive features, it's great on gas and handles the road so well. I'm just head over heels in love! ❤️

  4. Camryn Kutch 2024-11-01

I completely agree with the experts that the ride can be a little choppy at times, but overall, this is a great vehicle. The options available for the cost are simply amazing. Additionally, the sport mode provides a really enjoyable and uptempo ride.

  5. Mason Gutmann 2024-10-29

This is a really nice sedan and it came at a great price, even lower than the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. Plus, when purchased from Rick Case Hyundai, it comes with an impressive 20-year/200,000-mile warranty!
