The Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid (often abbreviated as the Prius PHV and known as the Prius Prime in North America, South Korea, and New Zealand) is a plug-in hybrid liftback manufactured by Toyota. The first-generation model was produced from 2012 to 2016. The second-generation model has been produced since 2016. Production of the third-generation model began in 2023.

The Prius Plug-in Hybrid was the second most sold plug-in electric car in 2012, and became third-best all-time in December 2014. As sales declined after the end of its production, the Prius PHV fell to fifth place in the global ranking by November 2015, after being surpassed by both the Tesla Model S and the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. As of December 2017, sales were led by North America with 66,800 units, followed by Japan with 48,800, and the European market with 13,100 units. The U.S. was the leading country market with 65,703 units sold by 2017. As of December 2019, cumulative global sales of both Prius plug-in generations totaled 209,000 units.

Concept and demonstration models

The Prius Plug-In Hybrid Concept was exhibited at the September 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, the October 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, and the December 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show. The vehicle was based on the third-generation Toyota Prius (model XW30) but outfitted with 5.2 kWh lithium-ion batteries. The selected battery capacity is the minimum required for a vehicle to be eligible for the U.S. federal tax credit of US$2,500, which under the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 is applicable to the first 200,000 plug-ins sold by an automaker.

After displaying the concept version in these three shows, a global demonstration program involving 600 pre-production test cars began in late 2009 and took place in Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, New Zealand and the United States. The demonstration vehicles were made available for lease to fleet and government customers, of which, 230 were delivered in Japan beginning in late December 2009, 125 in the U.S. by early 2010, and 200 in Europe in spring 2010. All program vehicles were equipped with data tracking devices to allow Toyota to monitor the car's usage for further development of the plug-in hybrid system.

The pre-production Prius Plug-in used three different batteries: two added batteries to provide all-electric drive and the standard hybrid battery which engages when the first two are depleted, allowing the car to operate like a regular hybrid Prius. According to Toyota, when the vehicle started, it operates in all-electric mode, drawing electrical power directly from the first battery pack. When the first battery was depleted, it disconnected from the circuit and the second pack engaged. When the second pack was depleted, it disconnected from the circuit and the vehicle defaulted to conventional hybrid mode, using the main battery as the sole electrical power source. Pack one and pack two would not reengage with the circuit until the vehicle was plugged in and charged.

According to Toyota, the demonstrator was rated at 1.76 L/100 km (134 mpg‑US; 161 mpg‑imp) on the Japanese JC08 cycle with a combined efficiency based on 43.6% of driving in EV mode, and CO2 emissions of 41 g/km. Fuel efficiency operating as a gasoline-electric hybrid, like the regular Prius, is 3.3 L/100 km (72 mpg‑US; 86 mpg‑imp) with CO2 emissions of 76 g/km.

Common 2017 Toyota Prius prime problems

The 2017 Toyota Prius Prime has been praised for its excellent reliability, but there are still some common problems that owners have reported. These issues are generally minor compared to other hybrids, leading to low repair costs.

One of the most common problems is cracked windshields, which are particularly prone to cracking at the top corners if hit with a rock.

Another issue that some owners have reported is worn-out brake rotors, which can occur in the first 30,000 miles due to excessive hard braking.

Rattles in the dash are another complaint from Toyota Prius Prime owners, particularly around 20,000 miles.

There are also three recalls on the 2017 Toyota Prius Prime, including a recall for the engine wiring harness, which may short out.

In addition to these common problems, some owners have reported issues with the exhaust system, including muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, heat shields, and leaks.

Other issues reported by owners include a failure in the power driver's seat, a rear windshield wiper and washer not working, inside lights not working when opening the door, and tires leaking at the bead before the tread was worn.

While these issues are relatively minor, they are still worth noting for potential buyers of the 2017 Toyota Prius Prime. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to any problems can help ensure a long and trouble-free lifespan for this reliable hybrid vehicle.

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-16
  • VIN: JTDZN3EU3HJ
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: While driving I heard noises, like “flap, flap, flap”. Pulled over to look at the tire and saw that the tire was peeling. Changed to the donut spare tire and went to “Firestone” 5 days later to have a new tire put on because the original service shop, “Mr King auto services center”, would not take any responsibility for a the tire that was purchased and installed by them 6 months prior. I went to Mr Tire 2 days after this happened and was basically told there was nothing they could do and said it was the alignment. Firestone said my alignment was fine and gave me paperwork to show what was checked. Cooper P215/50R17 (90W)

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-21
  • VIN: JTDKARFU5H3
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: While driving the speed limit of 70mph on a major highway, the sunroof on my 2017 Toyota Prius exploded. There was no warning of any kind: no other traffic nearby so no rock or debris from another vehicle; no overpass or bridge so nothing from above; it was a mild sunny day of 76 degrees so not a weather factor; and by the angle of the glass that remains being in an outward position rather than inward, reveals to me that it was from inside out, not from outside in as if it were a rock hitting. It just exploded. I was the only person in the car. Thankfully, the visor was shut on it or the shattered glass would have caused injury and of greater serious concern is just the sudden sound of what sounded like a bomb going off over my head was enough to cause a reaction which easily would result in an accident. It was a terrifying experience! I was lucky no other vehicles were nearby and could react and safely get off the road. I called 911 immediately and reported it. I have read many such claims from other Toyota owners online (see ToyotaNation.com and search by "exploding Sunroof") and even from a technician at my nearby Toyota Collision Center that it just happened to a friend of theirs also. This is not a one time issue. When I took the car to the Collision Center for an estimate and inquired about the damage, they could find no recall on it by Toyota. This is certainly a dangerous and hazardous issue that needs to be addressed asap before someone is seriously hurt or there is a fatality.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-23
  • VIN: JTDKARFU7H3
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Dashboard pop up came up saying that the grille shutter is inoperable to visit a dealer. Went online and noticed there were recalls for my Prius year and because emissions is affected I contacted Toyota financial customer service who said to go to a dealer and that they would fix no charge. Went three times to the dealer and they did not want to honor the recall. Charged me $200 to run diagnostics on the vehicle and confirmed that the code that was being recalled matched. They made excuses and in the end did not fix. The pop up appeared March 2024 and since then I now have another pop up appear about the hybrid system overheating due to them not fixing. I went to a local mechanic who said it was the dealers responsibility since there are service bulletins but they do not want to help. The car has stalled out on the freeway almost leaving me to get hit and my fuel has gotten worse.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-15
  • VIN: JTDKARFP9H3
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Each time I use the USB port behind the cup holders, my vehicle's electrical system goes through a power-down cycle. This has happened several times over the years while I was driving. I no longer use that particular USB port for safety reasons. I reported this to my Toyota dealer, but they could not replicate the problem while I was there, so nothing was ever done. My younger son was driving the car and nearly had a wreck when the electrical system power-cycled while he was driving. He has been instructed to not use the USB ports.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-19
  • VIN: JTDKARFUXH3
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: While filling my Prius with gas, as soon as I started pumping, it spewed gas all over my arms and shirt, as the gas would not go down the pipe into the gas tank. My mechanic explained that gasline exhaust valve was stuck causing the gas to spirt back out the intake opening. This part had to be replaced. Firestone replaced it for a total of $337.08, however, the dealer would have charged more. It was not covered as a defect issue. The experienced mechanic said that he had seen this problem on several Toyotas. This is hazardous and Toyota should repair those that exhibit this problem; also they should change their design so that the exhaust valve does not fail causing gasoline to spill on the person pumping gas and all down the side of the car onto the cement pavement.

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-11
  • VIN: JTDKARFP1H3
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: It was time to replace my original equipment tires after approximately 30,000 miles (41,622 car miles, remainder 11,622 on separate snow tires). The car rode smoothly. I purchased four YOKOHAMA AVID Ascend LX SIZE 195/65R15 tires. The tires were balanced professionally at VIP Tires in Watertown, MA. Since the original tires had a little bit of uneven wear, I also had the car aligned at the same time. I immediately noticed intense vibration in the car seat and floorboard (not in stearing) when driving over 47 mph. I brought the car back and they rebalanced the tires. The vibration remained. I took a video of both back tires (both same DOT code) using my GoPro (and wife driving) and found left rear seemed ok, but right rear had abnormal tread movements. I also noticed much more seat vibration at right rear compared to left rear seat. I brought car back to installer and they (Marco & Julio) confirmed the right rear tire is defective.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-17
  • VIN: JTDKARFUXH3
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: When filling gas, a near-empty Prius overflowed almost immediately, splashing fuel over the car, the ground, tires, and my feet! Gas is flammable and not good to get on one's skin. Firestone experienced/certified repairman said that he's repaired many Toyotas with the same problem. No advanced warning was presented. Last time I filled it before this incident it worked fine. Technician said that the air-exhaust that permits air to escape while gas is being delivered to the tank had failed to work properly, causing the fuel to spew back up the gas line and on to the car/ground. He had to order a part from Toyota and replace it. This cost me $337 for part and labor. I believe this is a malfunction that Toyota should cover. This part should not fail as it could start a fire and contaminate the car, ground and put petroleum on people.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-07-12
  • VIN: JTDKBRFU2H3
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: For the past year or so we have had issues with the vehicle not starting properly. If we leave the radio, wipers, heater, or air conditioner in the ON position when we shut the car off, or a window down a little on a hot day, a sensor triggers a Low Battery error code. We have had the battery checked and it is NOT low. When this happens to start the car we need to get a jumpstart from someone. This limits where we feel safe driving to as in a remote place where not many other people and cars are it would be more difficult to find someone to give us a jumpstart. On occasion, we have had to call a towing service to come to help us, which requires sometimes a long wait. The car starts right up once the connection to the other vehicle's battery is made. We should not need a checklist to make sure everything is turned off before we leave the car to avoid this non-starting issue.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-14
  • VIN: JTDKBRFU4H3
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: On 9/14/22 I was almost a hundred miles from my home in Sherrill, NY on Rte 81 south, approaching the bridge in Binghamton, NY when I heard a loud ringing noise. At first I thought it was my phone; then I thought it was a police vehicle; then a construction noise. I finally faced the fact if was coming from my 2017 Prius which had just reached 20,000 miles. I was in heavy traffic but managed to pull over and walk around the car as the noise seemed to be coming from the rear. I saw nothing amiss. I managed to drive another twenty minutes to Great Bend, PA and just before I pulled into the parking lot at McDonalds the noise stopped. I called Nye Automotive in Oneida, NY which had sold me the car and talked to a mechanic who said he had no experience with a ringing noise. Proceeding cautiously I drove 135 miles to Quakertown, Pa where my son diagnosed the problem as the brake pad on the drivers side rear wheel that had tilted and was banging against the rotor. My son replaced the brake pad and next day we drove to Long Beach Island, NJ, stopping to check for heat coming from that wheel. It was fine. When I got back home to Sherrill I could found the email of Mark Templin, CEO of Toyota who gave me the number of [XXX], a Toyota executive. I have been driving for sixty years and had never encountered a tilted brake pad. I am so easy on brakes that mechanics marvel that I can get to over 50,000 miles before work needs to be done. I am concerned that the ringing-clanging noise alone could cause an accident. Having had a bee and a mouse in the car previously I remained in control but could have reacted badly. I told [XXX] that I thought perhaps Toyota would like to see who had made the brake pads. I had heard of airbags and other components purchased by many car makers having caused problems in the past. Mr. Wilson didn't seem interested. Also, since my car was beyond the 3-year warranty he felt Nye wanting to charge me to look at the car was appropriate. SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-26
  • VIN: JTDKARFUXH3
  • Components: SEATS
  • Summary: The driver's side car seat automatic seat adjustment (backwards/forwards) failed all of a sudden with no warning. It was working when I parked the car to go into an office for an appointment. When I came back out to the car, it wouldn't work and was making strange noises. I called the dealer and they said to bring in the car to be looked at. This is a safety issue because it was hard to reach the pedal to drive the car without pillows pushing me forward in the car seat. The car was taken to the dealer twice and I was finally told that the track the car goes forward and backward on was worn out and the motor would need to be replaced. I was quoted $3K for the repair because the warranty had expired and the car seat needed to be removed to make the repairs.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-12
  • VIN: JTDKBRFU7H3
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
  • Summary: I had just changed from the right-hand lane to the center lane of a six-lane expressway when my vehicle lost power and i was able to move over to the right hand shoulder of the road. The accelerator pedal did not work and I just coasted to the side of the road. I noticed that a red warning saying something about RADAR flashed on the instrument panel when this happened. I turned off the vehicle and tried to restart it, but nothing happened. I then texted the person who was expecting me and explained the problem. Since I had just taken the car to the dealer for its regular 40,000 mile service four days earlier, I intended to call my dealer to ask them what to do. All of this took about 10 minutes with the engine turned off. Before doing this, I again tried to restart it. It started and I inched it forward on the shoulder of the road. Since I did not feel safe parked on the shoulder, I merged into traffic and took it to another Toyota dealer. They said that they could not look at my vehicle to diagnose what might be wrong because all their technicians were going home at 4 pm. I drove to my son's house and he suggested that I report this to you. Something similar happened to him when he was driving this same vehicle about six month ago. He was driving on a city street, did not notice any dashboard warning, and took it to this same dealer. They were not able find anything wrong. I felt I should report this since this is the second time this vehicle suddenly lost power. My incident happened when I was driving at expressway speed and could have caused a serious accident had I not been able to coast to the shoulder of the road.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-02-16
  • VIN: JTDKARFP2H3
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Loud popping, grinding, and clicking noises from the front left of the car while decelerating, sometimes during acceleration, and parking. The clicking has been happening since the vehicle was new and has progressively gotten worse. It is so bad now that other motorists and pedestrians become distracted by it. A pedestrian tripped and fell over last week trying to look behind them at what was causing this unusual racket. I can now feel the repetitive popping in the steering wheel and brake peddle. The car now feels unsafe to drive. I have taken this vehicle to several Toyota dealers in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 to expressed my concerns. Dealers insist the characteristic is normal, even when T-SB-0157-18 "Click Noise From LF Wheel Area During Deceleration" was in effect. The vehicle is still under powertrain warranty and no warranty repair has been offered each time. This characteristic was very similar to T-SB-0157-18, however it has gotten worse. It now always occurs during deceleration, frequently during normal driving and acceleration. It is extremely distracting and nerve racking, to the point of it being a safety issue for me, other motorists, and pedestrians. It is a very unusual sound no one expects and pays an unsafe amount of attention to. I strongly suspect the front CV axle(s) are grinding themselves into dust. Toyota knows this is a safety issue, cancelled the TSB in April 2019, and refuse to repair the car under power train warranty. My axle has been clicking since March 2018. It now feels unsafe in February 2022, especially after this most recent tripping incident.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-10
  • VIN: JTDKARFP7H3
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: I was driving in behind several cars on a city street about 30 mph. The cars ahead slowed quickly. The automatic braking system came on suddenly and completely and applied the brakes on its own with no warning red flash. It locked the brakes and the wheels skidded on the pavement I had no control over this at all I tried tapping lightly to stop the skid. I was about 10-12 feet away from the vehicle ahead of me when the car stopped. I did have some additional stopping room but had no control over the braking system at all if I had been on wet pavement the skidding and “hopping” would have been worse.

Negative 2017 Toyota Prius prime car reviews

  1. Madisen Kreiger 2024-09-08

I noticed that the front scoop bumper configuration may not be to everyone's liking as it may be prone to scratches and dings. The driver's seat has a lot of features and can be overwhelming at first, but I believe one would get used to it over time. Unfortunately, the rear visibility is not the best and could potentially be a safety issue. On a positive note, the car has great gas mileage, comfortable seats, and a spacious cargo/trunk. Overall, it seems like a great car with some minor drawbacks.

  2. Alexys Erdman 2024-08-04

I have driven my 2017 Prime for a little over 12,000 miles now. I bought it to reduce my carbon footprint and save money on gas. Unfortunately, I had to replace the lock mechanism on the passenger side rear door a couple of months ago, and I also had to repair the lower front panel twice due to scraping on parking barriers. I believe that the car's design is too low slung, which is a design flaw. These repairs have cost me more than I expected, and it has been frustrating. Additionally, I had an issue with the gas tank, which caused the gas to gush out and spill on the ground and my foot. I found out that this problem has been reported before and is related to the bladder. Lastly, there is an annoying rattle in the dashboard. Overall, I have had some issues with this car, and I regret buying it. I would not consider purchasing another one.

  3. Kadin Purdy 2024-07-02

Efficiency and price are great, but I was not impressed with the performance and handling, which felt similar to other Prius models. While the 25 miles of EV range may suit some drivers, I personally would prefer a PHEV with at least 45 miles of range. In terms of design, I have heard from many people that they find the exterior unattractive. Although the LCD screen looks impressive at first glance, the user experience could be improved, and it would be great if Toyota could support Apple Carplay and Android Auto. Overall, there is room for improvement, but the Prius still has its strengths.

  4. Ibrahim Jast 2024-03-29

The car seems to have been assembled from various parts without proper integration. It may not be the best car out there, but the entry level model is reasonably priced and works well enough. However, some features in the advanced model are poorly designed and not very useful. The interior storage is limited, but the glove box is large enough to hold the owner's manual. The road noise can be a bit loud, and the visibility is not great, except for the station wagon model. The USB port is not ideally located, and the Android charging platform may not work well on bumpy roads. The climate system can be a bit tricky to figure out, but it works decently. The safety features are not well executed, but they are expected to be improved in the future. Overall, the car is not perfect, but it gets the job done and is reasonably priced.

Positive 2017 Toyota Prius prime car reviews

No complaints so far! Riding the Prime in EV mode is an absolute joy. I did have a minor parking lot collision, and unfortunately, the cost for OEM parts was very high. However, I was lucky enough to have it covered by insurance.

I hope you're doing well! I couldn't resist trying out this new technology, even though I know I might have jumped in a little early. It's great to know that I'm doing my small part to help the environment, and as a huge bonus, my car is fun, quiet, clean, and I'm driving virtually for free! I wanted to give you an update: I've had my car in the Kansas City area for 6 months now, and I've put over 6K on it. I'm happy to report that I'm averaging 154 mpg! If it weren't for the fact that I'm dating someone who lives well outside of my EV range, I'd be getting closer to 200 mpg! I should also mention that the price I paid for the car does not include the federal tax credit of $4500, making this a really sweet deal!

Hi there! I noticed that you mentioned a small trunk. Is there anything specific you need help with regarding the trunk's size or storage capacity?

  4. Titus Keebler 2024-10-10

This car is incredibly powerful with 95 horsepower, which is impressive. I enjoy driving it and feel the rush of acceleration every time I step on the gas pedal. Although I take some risks while driving, I appreciate the safety features such as the blind spot monitoring and pedestrian detection. The car's top speed of 84mph is also impressive. Overall, I highly recommend this car and give it a 10/10 rating.
