Hyundai Sonata 2011 problems
The Hyundai Sonata (Korean: 현대 쏘나타) is a mid-size car that has been manufactured by Hyundai since 1985. The first generation Sonata, which was introduced in 1985, was a facelifted version of the Hyundai Stellar with an engine upgrade, and was withdrawn from the market in two years due to poor customer reaction. While the nameplate was originally only sold in South Korea, the second generation of 1988 was widely exported.
The Sonata is currently manufactured in South Korea where their headquarters are located, China and Pakistan. It was named after the musical term, sonata.
First generation (Y1; 1985)
The first Sonata was introduced to compete with the Daewoo Royale series and was a more luxurious version of the Stellar. It included cruise control, power seats, head lamp washers, power brakes, electric operated adjustable side mirrors and chrome bumper trims. The Sonata was available with two trim options in Korea: Luxury and Super (the latter only available with a 2.0-liter engine). In the domestic market Hyundai attempted to sell the Sonata as an executive car using catchphrases like "Luxury car for VIP"; however, as the Sonata was based on the Stellar without any major changes, it was seen by the public as no more than a luxury version of the Stellar. In 1987 Hyundai added two tone color schemes and a trip computer option, but sales soon went down and the car was discontinued in December of that year. The Sonata was sold only in the South Korean domestic market. The vehicle was unveiled in South Korea on 4 November 1985.
Engine choices included 1.6-liter Mitsubishi Saturn (only available outside the domestic market), 1.8- and 2.0-liter Mitsubishi Sirius inline-fours. The latter unit also found its way into the 1987 and later Stellar, and in MPI form the 1986 Hyundai Grandeur. The body was a largely unchanged Hyundai Stellar.
It was sold in New Zealand (right hand drive) with the 1.6-liter Mitsubishi engine with the five-speed manual gearbox; an automatic transmission was an optional extra. The original importer was a unit of the Auckland-based Giltrap Motor Group.
The final version of the Stellar was known as the Stellar 88 and was launched to celebrate the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Afterwards, Hyundai discontinued the Stellar and replaced it with the all-new Sonata.

Common Hyundai Sonata 2011 problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the Hyundai Sonata 2011, several common problems have been reported:
- Seat Belt Recall: In 2017, Hyundai issued a recall for 2011-2014 Sonata models due to a faulty seat belt linkage. This defect could fail to restrain occupants during a crash, increasing the risk of injury or death. The recall affected 444,000 sedans and was announced twice in 2017. The recall addressed issues with the seat belt's anchor pretensioner, which had a cable connector that may not have been correctly connected to the belt's linkage.
- Shifting Issues: Owners of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata faced problems shifting gears due to a faulty speed sensor. This issue caused vehicles to grind, shudder, and produce clunking noises when shifting from park to drive. Some owners even reported a lack of gear selection display on the dashboard or gear shift. Fortunately, replacing the speed sensor is a relatively inexpensive fix, with the part costing around $30 to $50.
- Faulty Speakers: Another common issue reported in Hyundai Sonatas was defective speakers. Some models from 2011 to 2016 experienced problems with the CD player, navigation, radio, and phone calls producing no audio. A simple fix involved disconnecting and reconnecting the negative battery terminal to reset the system and restore sound output.
These common problems with the Hyundai Sonata 2011 have caused inconvenience and safety concerns for owners, leading to recalls, lawsuits, and the need for repairs and replacements to address these issues effectively.
Does 2011 Hyundai Sonata have engine problems?
DETROIT (AP) — Hyundai is recalling nearly a half-million midsize cars in the U.S. to replace key engine parts because a manufacturing problem could cause them to fail. The recall covers 470,000 Sonata sedans from the 2011 and 2012 model years equipped with 2-liter or 2.4-liter gasoline engines.
Is the 2011 Hyundai Sonata reliable?
How Long Will the 2011 Hyundai Sonata Last? Based on ownership data and reviews, the 2011 Sonata is a poorly made car with severe mechanical problems. You should expect one to last 100,000 to 150,000 miles when properly cared for, which is below average for its class.
What is the common problem of Hyundai Sonata?
Old and new Sonata model years had similar issues with their timing chain tensioner, which produced rattling noises upon engine startup. Many owners also reported a broken timing belt, which damaged the crankshaft position sensor.
Does 2011 Hyundai Sonata have transmission problems?
Hyundai Motor Co. is recalling 883,000 2011-2014 model-year Sonata sedans because of a potential transmission problem, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports. The transmission shift cable might detach from the shift lever pin.

- VIN: 5NPEB4AC3BH
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: On [XXX], I smelled a chemical burning smell. We searched the house for about 5 minutes and finally went to the garage. As my husband opened the garage door he said the car is on fire. I looked and smoke was pouring out of the inside. He ran, opened the door and flames came bursting out. He immediately took off to get the fire extinquisher from the kitchen and I called 911. The fire department came and put the flames out. Upon inspection, the dashboard had a fire and the extreme heat had melted the entire dash. The fire chief and my husband were trying to figure out what had happened. The car was not running at the time. A little earlier, my husband had an air compressor plugged into the cigarette lighter. When he finished filling a tire, he unplugged the compressor, put the compressor in the car on the floor and turned the car off. Then later, as I described there was a fire. My husband and the fire chief inspected the engine which had no damage. The were specifically looking for the fuses. All fuses were in tact. In researching I discovered the the Hyundai Sonata had issues and new about the problems. We purchased the car in March and were not aware of any recalls, nor were the previous owners. I have spent the last 6 weeks in communication with Hyundai who led me on a wild goose chase and has refused to take responsibility for the fire. The are trying to blame in on the compressor which was not even plugged in. I was made aware of several class action law suits, but have not been able to find any information. I have kept all communication with Hyundai and have requested the recorded phone conversations also. The car is still in my driveway. Obviously all the electrical is destroyed and not fixable. I was trying to avoid lawyers and just get Hyundai to own up to the problem and take responsibility to pay what I paid for the car. I can get copies of all email communication. I attached the final email received yesterday. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

- VIN: 5NPEB4AC2BH
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: P205 65 R16 Blizzak tires were purchased in December 2023, online and I had them installed same week. I spoke to the employee who stated as long as I rotated the tires at 5,000 miles, I can drive them all year. I went to Discount tires on Saturday to have my tires checked since I was sliding in the rain. The employee told me my front tires were at a 1 and 2, while the back tires are at 9 and 10. She told me to talk to the front desk about the tires. I went in and asked about the warranty I had purchased. The employee told me it does not apply and that I would need to replace the tires. I explained to him that the car doesn't even have 5,000 miles on it since the purchase of the tires and how did the front wear so quickly? I only started using the car more in March. He also told me it could be the alignment. I had that fixed 2 years ago and the car doesnt pull left or right. He stated that the tires will bald if being driven in over 40 degree temps. I have in the past used winter tires all year and never experienced this. These tires never made it to 5,000 miles. They should not be worn so badly in the front, that this had now cause my back breaks to grind. Not only do I have to buy 4 new tires, since I can't keep the back on there, but I have to eventually get new back brakes, that aren't even 2 years old. These tires should not be on anyone's cars if they wear this quickly.

- Fire: 1
- VIN: KMHEC4A47BA
- Components: STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: Driving from home to a shopping center, approximately 25 miles, I did not observe any unusual noises nor smoke nor dashboard warning lights. Once I parked and shut off the engine in the shopping center parking lot, I observed a small amount of thick, white smoke coming from the hood on the front passenger side of my car, and then the smoke abruptly stopped. I was concerned enough that I decided I should probably move my car to a parking space a bit further away from the store I planned to go into in order to be further away from other vehicles. I started the engine again, and once again, no smoke nor unusual noises nor warning lights. I drove around to the next parking aisle and parked in a different parking space. Once I turned off the engine again, the smoke then immediately started from the right side of the hood again and quickly smoke started coming from the left side of the hood. I was quickly trying to grab my things to get out of the car as I saw the paint starting to peel off of the hood of my car. I was barely able to get out of my car as fire flames and very thick white smoke were then emerging from the hood. A person in the parking lot called 911 for me, and the local fire department arrived and put the fire out that destroyed my car. I am in the process of securing the Fire Marshall's lengthy report. At the present time, my vehicle is at our home where we paid to have it towed.

- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 Sonata vehicles manufactured December 11, 2009, to April 12, 2012 at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama and equipped with either a 2.0 liter or 2.4 liter Gasoline Direct injection engine. In the affected vehicles, metallic debris may not have been fully removed during manufacturing of the engine crankshaft. If the debris was not completely removed, oil flow may be restricted through the connecting rod bearings, causing connecting rod damage. A worn connecting rod bearing will produce a metallic, cyclic knocking noise from the engine and possible engine failure.
- Consequence: Engine failure would result in a vehicle stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicles and replace the engine assembly, as necessary, free of charge. Additionally, Hyundai Motor America will increase the warranty for the engine sub-assembly (short block) to 10 years/120,000 miles for both original and subsequent owners of 2011 and 2012 Sonatas manufactured at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama equipped with 2.0 liter and 2.4 liter Gasoline Direct injection engines. - Summary: Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2011 Sonata vehicles manufactured from December 11, 2009, through September 1, 2010. The affected vehicles may experience a brake fluid leak from the two brake lines that connect the brake system's master cylinder to the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) due to insufficient seal between the inner brake hose and metal brake line fitting.
- Consequence: If the brake lines leak brake sufficient fluid, the brake warning lamp in the instrument cluster will illuminate and longer stopping distance will be required, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
- Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the brake hoses with a revised service part, free of charge. The recall began in September 2014. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's number for this recall is 122.

- Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
- Summary: Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2011-2014 Sonata vehicles manufactured December 11, 2009, through May 29, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the transmission shift cable may detach from from the shift lever pin.
- Consequence: If the transmission shift cable detaches, the transmission gear selection may not match the indicated gear and the vehicle may move in an unintended or unexpected direction, increasing the risk of a crash. Furthermore, when the driver parks the vehicle, despite selecting the 'PARK' position, the transmission may not be in 'PARK.' If the vehicle is not in the 'PARK' position and the parking brake is not applied, there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
- Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, as necessary, repair the connection between the shift cable and shift lever, free of charge. The recall began in September 2014. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's number for this recall is 123.

- Summary: Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
- Consequence: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. The safety recall began on April 22, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 110.

Wow, I'm so impressed! Even though I didn't test drive this car and bought it online, it was delivered to me at work. I was a bit worried about it only being a 4cyl, but to my surprise, this car has the get-up-and-go to pass anything on the road. It rides and handles great, especially through the curves in the Ozark mountains. It climbs the mountains without hesitation and gets an impressive 34 mpg through the mountains and as high as 37 mpg on flat land with cruise. Although some of the plastic in the interior could be of better grade, for the money, this is one sweet ride. I used to have a Lexus SC400, and I rate the Sonata right up there with it!

I'm really impressed with the power of the 2.0 engine! As someone who has only owned v-8 mustangs for the past twenty years (my last one being a 2000 gt), I was pleasantly surprised by how well this car accelerates (and it gets ten miles per gallon better mileage!). While I did find cornering a little scary at first, I have to say that this car is quite responsive and agile for its size. Without driving it more, it's hard to tell where its limits are. My kids and I absolutely love the heated front and rear seats - they're so comfortable that they could probably be illegal for auto use! People would be falling asleep in them.

It's been three months and 5,000 kilometers of pure excitement for me as I've put this car through everything imaginable. The mileage is amazing, about 47 MPG (Canadian) on the highways, and in the city, I get about 31 MPG (Canadian). The vehicle is quiet unless under hard acceleration. This is one of the smoothest cars I've ever owned, and there isn't even a glitch of a problem to be found on this vehicle. If you're thinking of getting one, I highly recommend getting it fully loaded with the Turbo!

For your use, the commuter load is 3 people totaling approximately 650 pounds, with an average height of 6 feet. You will be travelling approximately 360 miles per week on NY/NJ roads, with 80% of the journey on the highway. The car provides a good fit and lots of room, although the seats could be better. Strangely, I (the driver) feel more comfortable now than when I first bought it, and passengers have not complained. The ergonomics are excellent, although I do not like the trunk/gas release buttons. They should be lit or redesigned. In terms of performance, you must watch your speed as the car cruises at 90+. I drive hard and have experienced no body roll, under/over steer, brake fatigue or other common problems. The manual is great, although 3rd gear could be stronger. Please note that the entertainment system is stock, and I like it as long as you do not blast it.

I purchased this car from a Hyundai dealer as a certified vehicle with 20,000 miles. Initially, the quality was very good. However, I noticed that the materials used in the interior were not of the best quality. Around 50,000 miles, the rubberized coating on the steering wheel and window/door lock controls started to come off, not due to misuse, but because of poor quality materials. Additionally, the paint on the factory aluminum wheels started flaking off around this time. I owned this car until 118,000 miles and had to replace the front brakes three times and the front ball joints twice. I also had to take the car to the dealer 8-10 times for recalls. It is clear that this car is priced lower than a Toyota or Honda for a reason.

My husband and I bought this car in 2014 after his previous Sonata met its end. It lasted almost 300,000 miles without any issues, so he wanted another Sonata. We bought the 2011 Sonata used and it was great at first. Unfortunately, within the last year, the car has become more of a headache than anything. We have had to take it to the dealer 4 times in the past year, and it's there now. The first time, Hyundai claimed they couldn't find anything wrong and we were sent home. The check engine light came on again within a month, and they figured out something needed to be replaced in the transmission. The third time, the check engine light came on and we also had to replace the starter in the car, with only 60k miles on it. Now the car is in the shop again, and the airbag light is on this time. Thankfully we purchased an extended warranty on the car and it has paid to fix everything thus far. There have been 4 recalls on the car since we purchased it, and it's a pain to have to take off work to keep putting the car in the shop. I've also done research on the airbag issue and apparently it requires a new airbag that costs $1200 and isn't covered by the warranty, which is a safety hazard that Hyundai needs to address. I want to sell this car and get something more reliable. I hope this review helps you make an informed decision. Thank you for reading!

I purchased a 2011 Hyundai Sonata in April and recently drove it in snowy conditions. Unfortunately, the traction control and all-weather tires did not perform as expected, causing the vehicle to skid more than other cars I have owned. As a resident of Michigan, where the roads are relatively flat, I was disappointed in the car's performance. However, I am confident that with the addition of snow tires, the car will perform better in winter conditions. Overall, I believe that the car's design has room for improvement in regards to winter driving, but I am optimistic that it can be addressed with the right modifications.

Despite the numerous recalls, my car's engine seized while driving on the highway two weeks ago, with no warning signs. Fortunately, I was able to safely pull over to the side of the road with my two children in the car. Unfortunately, the warranty does not cover the issue since I am the second owner, which is frustrating considering the abundance of similar complaints on the internet. Even the mechanic mentioned that he had seen the same issue four times in the past month. It is clear that this is a defect and Hyundai should take responsibility and assist their customers. Currently, my car is at the dealership and I still have two more years of payments left.

Design: The car looks stunning both inside and out, and the paint still shines brightly. The ergonomics are excellent, but the seat could be more comfortable. MPG: I get an average of 24 MPG in mixed driving and an impressive 35 MPG on the highway. Engine: The four-cylinder engine performs nicely, but it can be quite loud. Transmission: The transmission is as smooth as silk. Handling: While the steering can feel a bit numb, the brakes work perfectly fine. The ride can be a bit jittery, but overall it's a decent experience. Aging: The car feels a bit cheaper now compared to three years ago, and the engine can be loud after 1.5k RPMs. Several rattles have developed in the cabin, but they are not too bothersome.
