2014 Gmc Terrain problems
The GMC Terrain is a crossover SUV by American manufacturer General Motors under its GMC marque. Sharing its platform with the Chevrolet Equinox, the first-generation Terrain was built on GM's Theta platform, while the second-generation model is currently built on the Delta platform. The Terrain is the smallest GMC vehicle, slotted below the Acadia. It also indirectly replaced the Pontiac Torrent which was typically sold via the same dealerships prior to General Motors dropping the Pontiac brand.
First generation (2010)
The 2010 Terrain debuted in April 2009 at the New York International Auto Show, introduced as a replacement for the Pontiac Torrent, which ended production after GM shut down the Pontiac brand in 2010. Although the preceding Pontiac Torrent had the same Theta platform, the Torrent was a rebadged version of the original Chevrolet Equinox from 2005 to 2009, while GM decided to differ the look of the Chevrolet Equinox with its 2010 Terrain and still use the Theta platform. Early 2010 models had the GM Mark of Excellence logo applied on the sides of the vehicle.
The Terrain initially came in SLE and SLT trims. For the 2013 model year, a Denali trim was added, featuring additional chrome trim and slightly improved interior quality, the 3.6-liter SIDI V6 that is shared with the 2012 Cadillac SRX, and firmer front struts. The Denali also offers cross-traffic detection, blind-spot warning, and a power passenger seat as options. A low-end SL trim was added for 2015.

- Summary: On May 10, 2024 while driving my 2014 GMC Terrain driving at about 65mph my car cut off while driving to the point that the car started slowing down which had med confused as to what was going on but thankfully I was able to safely move over to the side of the of the highway in order to be in safer position to start the car back up. There was no warrant signs that the car had cut off but I had the air conditioning on do it stop blowing. At this point I knew the car was not safe to drive but I had to get off the highway. So I was about 5 miles from my exit which I was able to get to the exit without the car cutting off again on the highway but the car cut off once again on the exit as my speed was decelerating. I took my car to Meineke Car Care a few days later and was told that my car needed to have the solenoid replaced and the timing chain kit which was what the diagnostic was showing. Once they were able to fully inspect the car I was told that the timing chain kit was broken and I had medal in my oil which was suggested that I replace my engine. This put me at risk of being in an accident that could have injured myself or someone. There were no warning indications. My check engine light was not on. I had to pay to have the engine replaced which before I had it replaced I took my car to another shop just to get a second opinion in which I had the engine replaced.

I am the second owner of this CPO vehicle. When I purchased it, the odometer read 11k and now it reads 102K. I am happy to report that I have not experienced any problems other than normal maintenance. I have made a few upgrades to the vehicle, such as changing the tires to Continental Standard touring tires, upgrading the mass air sensor, and installing a free flow cat back muffler system. With these upgrades, I am able to get 22-24 mpg in the city and have regularly achieved in excess of 35+ on the highway. In fact, my highest average has been over 40+ mpg. I have been diligent about regular oil changes using synthetic oil 0-20, which allows me to go 5K between changes. I am hoping to get 200K out of it and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a comfortable car that seats 5 easily. The vehicle has now crossed 108K and still runs great. I recently replaced the struts and shocks, as well as a cannister vapor purge valve ($36.00). I have also returned to using 0530W as the lighter weight oil was about a pint low at the end of each 5K oil change. Overall, I have had no major issues with the car and it is still tight with no rattles or squeaks. The wind noise is about the same as when I bought it at 11K.

Onstar can be a bit pricey, but I wanted to share my experience driving cross country last year. I was very pleased with how well it handled, even in the mountains, and the 4 cylinder engine provided plenty of power. The car was also very comfortable and fuel efficient. I'm actually planning another trip this year, from Vermont down to the Florida Keys, and I'm confident that my car will continue to be reliable and get great gas mileage.

I'm so glad to hear that you got a great deal on a previously leased vehicle! It sounds like you had a wonderful vacation in Ohio and were able to travel around comfortably for about 1,000 miles before shipping it home. It's great to hear that the vehicle drives so well. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

I love my Terrain! Its body style is so unique and it really makes a statement. I think it's going to be a classic style that will never go out of fashion. I can't take my eyes off of it, even when it's just sitting in my driveway. Owning an SUV like this is truly a dream come true. I really love my GMC!

I really love the style of this vehicle! It has a boxy look which gives you more head room in the cargo area when putting in and taking out cargo. The split seat in the back is also very convenient when hauling long items. The interior is very nice, especially the leather interior with heated seats. However, there are a few things that could be improved. Firstly, the heating system is not what it should be. I have to constantly switch the settings back and forth from windshield to feet, which can be distracting while driving. Additionally, there is no heat to the back seat area, which can cause the rear windows to fog up and make it uncomfortable for passengers. Secondly, the lack of adjusting the passenger's seat up and down can make it difficult for some people to get in and out of that side. Lastly, the gas mileage could be better. Although it has a four cylinder with eco, I only get 2 more miles per gallon than I did with my previous car which was a v6. It can also be sluggish on the highway when trying to pass other vehicles.

This vehicle has been reported to burn oil at a high rate, so it is important to check the oil level regularly to avoid any potential damage to the engine. Unfortunately, there is no indicator light to warn you if the oil level is low. Many people have expressed their concerns about this issue, and it would be great if GMC could take responsibility and address this problem. Overall, this is a good vehicle, but the oil problem is something to keep in mind.
Eloy Runte 2024-08-13
The 2014 Terrain SLT-1 that I purchased from a dealer in 2021 has been consuming oil at an alarming rate, despite not showing any signs of leakage or burning. Despite my efforts to have the issue addressed by a dealership, I have not received any assistance. As a result, I am now in a difficult position where trading in the vehicle would result in a significant loss due to its mechanical issues. Despite the challenges, I remain confident in my ability to find a solution to this problem. It is unfortunate that these engine issues were not addressed by the manufacturer, but I am determined to find a way forward. As a single mother with a limited income, I caution others to carefully consider their options before purchasing a GMC/Chevy vehicle.
Osvaldo Smith 2024-04-09
The rust spots on my GMC were a major issue, causing damage to the back metal and under the window within a year. The exhaust system also suffered significant damage, requiring replacement of the entire thing. Despite the dealership's recommendation to use original parts, my husband and I opted for a cut and weld solution, which unfortunately did not last. Although the warranty was void, I have noticed similar rust issues on many other Terrains. It is worth noting that the rust is not covered until it goes completely through. Additionally, the car struggles in snowy conditions unless there is weight in the back. Despite these challenges, I paid off the car early and am confident that I can find a solution to the exhaust issue.

I recently purchased a 2014 GMC Terrain Denali, V6, AWD, hoping to try out an American-built car again after years of foreign quality. Unfortunately, the AWD system failed with only 443 miles on it, and I had to wait 2 days to get it to the dealership. Despite the inconvenience, the dealership was able to fix the issue under warranty. While I was disappointed with the failure, I appreciated the dealership's willingness to make things right. Although the car is advertised to get 16 MPG city, I have been getting around 12 MPG on Premium fuel. Overall, I had a mixed experience with this American car, but I am still open to trying out other American-made vehicles in the future.
