Common 1987 Chevrolet Monte carlo problems
The 1987 Chevrolet Monte Carlo is a popular car among enthusiasts, but like any vehicle, it has its common problems and issues. Here are some of the most frequently reported problems with the 1987 Monte Carlo, based on complaints from owners of this car:
- Transmission Pressure Control Solenoid Failure: One of the most common issues with the 1987 Monte Carlo is transmission pressure control solenoid failure. This problem can cause the car to shift roughly or not shift at all, leading to a loss of power and a decrease in fuel efficiency. The solenoid is responsible for controlling the flow of transmission fluid, and when it fails, it can lead to a variety of transmission problems. The best way to prevent this issue is to have the transmission serviced regularly and to replace the solenoid as soon as it starts to show signs of failure.
- Blower Motor Resistor Failure: Another common problem with the 1987 Monte Carlo is blower motor resistor failure. This issue can cause the car's climate control system to only work on certain settings, making it difficult to maintain a comfortable temperature inside the car. The blower motor resistor is responsible for controlling the speed of the blower motor, and when it fails, it can cause the blower motor to run at a single speed or not work at all. The best way to prevent this issue is to replace the blower motor resistor as soon as it starts to show signs of failure.
- Broken Coolant Elbows: The 1987 Monte Carlo is also prone to broken coolant elbows, which can cause coolant to leak from the engine and lead to overheating. The coolant elbows are located near the engine block and are responsible for directing coolant flow. When they break, they can cause coolant to leak out, leading to a loss of coolant and a decrease in engine performance. The best way to prevent this issue is to replace the coolant elbows as soon as they start to show signs of wear.
- Bad Multifunction Switch: The 1987 Monte Carlo's multifunction switch, which controls the car's lights and wipers, can also fail. This issue can cause the car's lights to stop working or the wipers to stop working properly. The best way to prevent this issue is to replace the multifunction switch as soon as it starts to show signs of failure.
- Windshield Wipers Not Going to Park Position: The 1987 Monte Carlo's windshield wipers may not go to the park position when turned off. This issue can be caused by a small metal tab on the wiper transmission that gets bent out of place. The best way to prevent this issue is to straighten out the tab as soon as it gets bent.
These are just a few of the most common problems with the 1987 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. While these issues can be frustrating, they are generally easy to fix with regular maintenance and timely repairs. If you own a 1987 Monte Carlo, it's important to stay on top of these issues to ensure that your car stays in good working order for years to come.

- Summary: THE SCOPE OF THE FIRESTONE/BRIDGESTONE PROBLEM IS MUCH LARGER THAN THE COMPANY IS ADMITTING. MY 16 YEAR OLD SON HAD A TIRE DISINTEGRATE ON 4/21/00. THE SPARKS RESULTING FROM THIS WERE SO BAD THAT PASSERS-BY CALLED 911. THE OFFICER WHO CAME TO ASSIST MY SON SAID HE HAD NEVER SEEN A TIRE FALL TO PIECES LIKE THAT. IT WAS IN THE SAME SHAPE I'VE BEEN SEEING THE TIRES INVOLVED IN THE RECALL - SEPARATING AND SHREDDING. THE NEXT DAY WE REPLACED ALL FOUR TIRES WITH ANOTHER BRAND DUE TO OUR FEARS THAT THIS COULD HAPPEN TO ANOTHER TIRE. I RETAINED ONE TIRE TO USE AS A SPARE. THESE TIRES WERE NOT OLD, HAD NOT BEEN MISUSED, HAD PLENTY OF TREAD. WHEN I SAW THE REPORTS ON TELEVISION, I REALIZED THE PROBLEM IS MUCH LARGER THAN THE COMPANY IS ADMITTING TO.( DOT NUMBER: 1CKAP2A096 TIRE SIZE: P195/75R14 )
