The BMW Z models are a line of roadsters manufactured by German automaker BMW. The Z stands for Zukunft (German for future), and has been produced in four different series with six generations consisting of roadster, coupé, sports car, and concept variants.

The introduction of the M Coupé and M Roadster in the Z3 line marked the first of the Z series to have a high-performance BMW M variant. The first generation Z4 also continued to offer M Coupé and M Roadster variants. The current Z4 (G29) uses BMW's (B58B30) inline-six, its platform is the basis for the current Toyota Supra.

BMW Z1 (E30 based; 1989–1991)

The BMW Z1 is a two-seat roadster developed by BMW and was produced from March 1989 to June 1991. It was based on the E30 3 Series platform. The Z1 featured unusual doors which, instead of opening outward or upward, dropped into the door sills and had body panels which could easily be removed and replaced; the car could be driven with all its body panels removed for weight reduction and increased performance. Only 8,000 examples of the Z1 were produced.

Common 2006 Bmw Z4 problems

The BMW Z4, produced from 2003 to 2021, is known for its unique design and high-performance capabilities. However, like any vehicle, it is prone to certain common problems. This article will focus on the 2006 BMW Z4 and its most frequently reported issues, based on owner complaints.

One of the most common problems with the 2006 BMW Z4 is a clunking or jolting sensation from the steering wheel when applying the brakes.

Another common problem with the 2006 BMW Z4 is coolant loss due to engine coolant leaks from the expansion tank. This issue has been reported in 2003-2005 and 2008 models, and can lead to severe engine damage if left unaddressed.

The 2006 BMW Z4 has also been reported to have a defective roof mechanism, which can cause the roof motor to develop rust, especially in the 2008 redesign. This issue has persisted for some owners even after multiple replacements of the roof mechanism.

Additionally, the convertible top feature of the 2006 BMW Z4 has been a source of frustration for some owners, with reports of a malfunctioning convertible top that moves sluggishly or becomes inoperable.

It is important to note that these common problems do not affect all 2006 BMW Z4 models, and some owners may never experience these issues. However, being aware of these potential problems can help owners take preventative measures and address any issues promptly if they do arise.

  • VIN: 4USBU33536L
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: I have just found out that my 2006 BMW Z4 Convertible has serious wiring issues. The wires for example on my front headlights the insulation is falling off the and leaving bare wires. I am very concerned this could be a fire safety issue that could result in bare electrical wires shorting together and starting a car fire. My research shows that many people who have 2006 BMW Z4 Convertibles are having this same issue. This seems to be a real issue with BMW using cheap wiring harnesses material and over time due heat and cooling is cause the insulation to fail and resulting in this issue.

  • Summary: The Steering wheel gets Hard, looks like power steering gets disabled automatically while driving, making it almost impossible to steer. This has started to happen after hot weather had started few months back. I have tried to reproduce this issue several times, but it happens randomly and Not all the time. I don't drive the car much. But this is definitely a serious issue, I checked the BMW community and a lot of people are facing this issue. Not Sure how many have filed a complaint here. But this definitely should be addressed by BMW as this is not just one person facing this issue, there are hundreds and thousands of them. Level of severity is high, as someone who might have not faced this issue yet might suddenly face it on the highway could result in an extremely fatal accident. Havent reported to BMW yet, But found this issue is being faced by alot of people I thought to file my complaint here. I will soon get it repaired or replaced. There were no Warning lamps or messages prior to this. It started happening in September 2021.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-05-18
  • VIN: 4USBU53526L
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: THE CONVERTIBLE TOP FAILED 2011/30229 MILES, STILL UNDER CPO WARRANTY. THE DEALERSHIP ONLY TOPPED OFF THE HYDRAULIC FLUID AND CLAIMED NO LEAK FOUND. IT FAILED AGAIN 2014/45809 MILES. THIS TIME SEALS WERE REPLACED AND HYDRAULIC LINES. GOODWILL REPAIR WITH 50% OUT OF POCKET. IT FAILED AGAIN EARLIER THIS YEAR 2018/62112 MILES. THIS TIME I WAS QUOTED $2,938 TO $3,658. I HAD IT DIAGNOSED IN MAY AND WAS WAITING FOR AN ANSWER OF THE SERVICE MANAGER ABOUT BMW ASSISTING WITH THE REPAIR AND HAD NOT HEARD BACK. I INQUIRED AGAIN TWO DAYS AGO AND GOT A REPLY THAT BMW WOULD NOT PICK UP ANY OF THE REPAIR COST. IT APPEARS THAT IT WAS A SLOWLY DEVELOPING DEFECT. WHERE WOULD HAVE THE FLUID HAVE GONE AT THE FIRST REPAIR? ALSO DOING SOME RESEARCH TURNED UP A LOT OF THE SAME TROUBLE FOR OTHER OWNERS. APPARENTLY IT IS A DESIGN FLAW. WATER NOT DRAINING BECAUSE OF CLOGGING AND CONSEQUENTLY CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-04-21

2017-09-28

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-09-28
  • VIN: 4USBU33526L
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: STEERING IS EXTREMELY NOTCHY AND UNPREDICTABLE, ESPECIALLY ON HOT DAYS. WHEN IN MOTION, THE STEERING WHEEL REQUIRES FORCE TO TURN, AND SOMETIMES WILL TURN SLIGHTLY WITHOUT DRIVER INPUT. IT APPEARS THAT THE POWER ASSIST STEERING IS ACTUATING WHEN IT SHOULD NOT BE, CAUSING EITHER RESISTANCE TO STEERING INPUTS, OR APPLYING FORCE WHEN NO STEERING INPUT HAS BEEN APPLIED. WHEN THE ENGINE IS NOT RUNNING, OR AT VERY SLOW SPEEDS, NOISE CAN BE HEARD FROM THE POWER ASSIST MOTOR. IT ACTUATES WHEN NO STEERING INPUTS ARE BEING APPLIED. WHEN STEERING INPUTS ARE APPLIED, TOO MUCH RESISTANCE CAN BE FELT AND THE MOTOR MAKES ADDITIONAL NOISES. I PURCHASED THE CAR IN FEBRUARY OF 2016, AND THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING SINCE APPROXIMATELY SPRING OF 2016. IT HAS BEEN GETTING PROGRESSIVELY WORSE.
2017-08-16

STEERING PROBLEM

  • VIN: 4USBU33566L
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: DURING WEATHER ABOVE 80 DEGREES, THE STEERING BECOMES "TWITCHY" OR "NOTCHY," NO LONGER SMOOTH, BUT REQUIRING ADDITIONAL EFFORT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL, AT WHICH POINT, THE TIRES MOVE MORE THAN NEEDED, REQUIRING A STEERING ADJUSTMENT THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. AT THE SAME TIME, THE CAR DOES NOT HOLD A "LINE" AS WELL, REQUIRING A SERIES OF SMALL LEFT AND RIGHT STEERING CORRECTIONS.
2017-05-25

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-05-19
  • VIN: 4USBU335X6L
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: ON WARM DAYS THE STEERING ON MY 2006 BMW Z4 BECOMES UNRESPONSIVE AND UNPREDICTABLE. ON HOT DAYS IT IS DOWNRIGHT DANGEROUS. I HAVE READ IN MANY PLACES THAT THIS IS DUE TO A DESIGN DEFECT IN THE STEERING COLUMN. ONE SOURCE WHO IS AN ASE-CERTIFIED MASTER TECHNICIAN SAYS THAT THE "BMW Z4 STICKY STEERING IS RELATED TO A MANUFACTURING DEFECT, THAT HAS BEEN RECTIFIED AS OF 2007 AND UP. THERE IS A BEARING LOCATED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STEERING COLUMN THAT IS NOT SEALED. WITH TIME AND WHEN HOT, THE LUBRICANT GETS DRY AND GUMS UP. TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE, THERE IS NOT A RACE FOR THE BEARING TO RIDE IN ' THE INNER RACE IS ACTUALLY THE STEERING SHAFT ITSELF, WHICH IS A POOR DESIGN". MY VEHICLE WAS BUILT IN 2006 AND HAS ONLY 54,000 MILES ON IT. BMW APPARENTLY WAS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM AND CORRECTED IT THE FOLLOWING MODEL YEAR. THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS ON THE NHTSA WEBSITE ABOUT THE SAME PROBLEM, WHICH COULD GET WORSE OVER TIME. BMW SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL BEFORE SOMEONE GETS SERIOUSLY HURT.

Negative 2006 Bmw Z4 car reviews

  1. Damion Thompson 2024-06-18

I love the look and color of my car, it always turns heads despite its age. However, I have had some issues with it such as having to replace the light bulbs every 3 months, a new battery, starter, and now the passenger window is getting stuck. Additionally, the car has a bad oil leak and idles rough when I crank it. Although I take great care of my cars, I think BMWs need to be driven more frequently. I have decided to sell it this upcoming month, and this will be my third and final BMW. If you are considering buying a car, I would recommend buying a new one with a warranty or a more reliable brand.

  2. Miguel Harvey 2024-06-09

I really like the appearance of the car, which is why I decided to purchase it. However, the gas mileage is quite low, ranging from 14-18 mpg. The interior is also quite small and the seating position is too low. Although I love the power top, I do wish that a hard top like the SLK was available. The ride can be quite noisy and bumpy for a luxury roadster. While the 3.0i is slower, I do wish I had purchased the M class instead. It would be great if BMW could offer free DVD Nav, Sat radio, and other features, while also reducing the rear blind spots. The paddles are not necessary and could be removed, and the wheels and steering wheel could be improved in terms of appearance and quality.

  3. Travis Klocko 2024-05-10

Although the interior build quality could be improved, the car has exceptional performance. However, there have been some issues with annoying squeaks and rattles that have been brought to the dealer's attention four times but unfortunately, they have not been able to fix it. The ride can be a bit harsh and you can feel everything down to the road paint, especially on uneven roads. Additionally, tire noise can be high. Nonetheless, these are common characteristics of this type of car. Overall, the car offers exceptional performance.

I'm so glad you bought this car with only 17,000 miles! It's absolutely stunning to look at and even more amazing to drive. The car is fast, confident, and gorgeous, which is exactly what you want in a car. Your friend was right, it's impossible not to smile while riding in it! The interior is comfortable and well laid-out, making it a joy to be in. The MPG is incredible, averaging 28-28 MPG (low of 25, high of 32.2). You made a great choice by replacing the OEM run-flat tires with regular tires, as it improved the ride quality by 100% without any loss of handling and improved wet road handling. It's great to hear that the few issues that needed to be fixed were taken care of by the dealer with no problem, even though you're the 2nd owner and the car is still under warranty. The only drawback is that it can be a little challenging to get in and out of, but that's a small price to pay for such an amazing car!

I leased my Z4 and I'm so happy that I was able to keep my other car. My Z4 is reserved for my pleasure excursions. Since I don't drive it every day, it's always a treat when I lower myself into the driver's seat. The SMG is definitely the best feature. California is full of stop and go traffic so I don't have to deal with a manual transmission until I want to. When I hit the open highway, I really enjoy the ability to shift gears on my own. It's not quite the same as having a clutch, but it's the closest thing to the best of both worlds. My car has made me look forward to long weekends. I'm already looking forward to the end of my lease and the ability to get a Z4 M.

I bought this car because I absolutely loved the styling, and even after two years, I still get excited every time I drive it. People frequently stop me to ask questions about it, which I find really enjoyable. I chose this car over the Porsche Cayman, and I've never regretted my decision.
