2007 Ford Escape hybrid problems
The Ford Escape is a compact crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Ford Motor Company since the 2001 model year. The first Ford SUV derived from a car platform, the Escape fell below the Ford Explorer in size; the Escape is currently sized between the Ford EcoSport and Ford Edge. The 2004 Ford Escape Hybrid was the first hybrid-electric vehicle from Ford, and the first hybrid produced as an SUV.
The first two generations of the Escape used the Ford CD2 platform (jointly developed with Mazda), leading to the release of the Mazda Tribute and Mercury Mariner; as with the Escape, both the Tribute and Mariner were marketed in North America. In Europe, the Escape was initially branded as the Ford Maverick from 2001 to 2008 (replacing a Nissan-produced SUV).
Under the mid-2000s "One Ford" globalization strategy, the third and fourth-generation designs of the Escape have been unified with the Ford Kuga, designed by Ford of Europe. Sharing a common body and chassis underpinnings (and several engines), the Escape and Kuga are manufactured in their home markets. As with previous generations, the fourth-generation Escape is offered with gasoline, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid options. Outside of North America, the Ford Escape is marketed in Australia, China, and Taiwan.

Common 2007 Ford Escape hybrid problems
The 2007 Ford Escape Hybrid is a compact SUV that offers a fuel-efficient alternative to traditional gasoline-powered vehicles. However, like any vehicle, it is not without its issues. Here are some common problems reported by owners of the 2007 Ford Escape Hybrid:
- Transmission Issues: Some owners have reported experiencing a sharp jolt or cut out moment under medium acceleration, particularly when the vehicle is cold. This issue seems to be related to the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) and can be quite violent, making it a significant safety concern.
- Brake Issues: The 2007 Ford Escape Hybrid has been known to have issues with the anti-lock brakes, which can come on for a variety of reasons, from a faulty speed sensor to low brake fluid to total brake failure. It is essential to get this checked out as soon as possible to avoid any potential safety hazards.
- Tire Pressure Monitoring System: While not a significant issue, some owners have reported that the tire pressure monitoring system can be overly sensitive, alerting them to minor variations in tire pressure that may not be a cause for concern. This can be frustrating for some drivers, particularly those who are not familiar with the system.
- Interior Quality: The interior of the 2007 Ford Escape Hybrid has been criticized for its use of faux metallic accents and plastics, which do not quite measure up to the quality of the leather materials used in the vehicle. This can detract from the overall driving experience and make the vehicle feel less premium than it should.
It is important to note that while these issues are common, not every 2007 Ford Escape Hybrid will experience them. Regular maintenance and servicing can help prevent many of these issues from occurring, and Ford has issued recalls for certain models to address specific problems. However, potential buyers should be aware of these common issues and consider them when making their purchasing decision.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-22
- VIN: 1FMYU03Z37K
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The torque converter was failing in my 07 escape. When I switched gears from park to drive or reverse the car would shake and sometimes stall out. Or if I had to stop at a stop sign or traffic signal while in drive the same issues would happen. The old torque converter is not available for inspection unfortunately because I gave it back to autozone to get the core charge money back. But when we installed the new torque converter it completely solved the issues and the transmission is running great again. It put myself and my passengers at risk since my car would completely turn off at traffic lights sometimes. This problem has been reproduced by others and I actually found out the torque converter was the issue by finding a technical service bulletin (TSB 07-5-6) so I know other shops have discovered this issue. There were no warning lights or anything and no parts were inspected by others. I completed the whole replacement.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-06-02
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 1FMCU59H17K
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: ABS service light comes on intermittently, when light is on a "service brake system" warning comes across the guage cluster. While this service light is on the escape has little to no braking and requires upwards of 300ft to stop when going 45mph. Once the vehicle is brought to a stop you can hear the brake system attempting to pressurize but only making a repeated grinding noise directly in front of the driver in the engine bay. Once vehicle is parked and shut off the brakes continue to make the same grinding noise. After allowing the vehicle to sit over night you may get lucky and have fully functioning brakes or you may unlock the door and hear the grinding noise letting you know the abs warning will be illuminated once the car is started. I have currently rear-ended another vehicle while stopped at a red light because no matter how hard I pressed on the brakes my vehicle continued to roll forward into another vehicle. My vehicle passed inspection with zero obdII codes the day I bought the escape Friday, May 27, 2022. Exactly a week later on June 2, 2022 I experienced severe brake failure and rear ended a 2021 Toyota 4runner. No major damage was caused to either vehicle. Two days later on June 4, 2022 the brake system failed once again causing me to drive my vehicle off the road into the median to avoid an impact at 65mph on interstate I-85. I am a father to my 3 year old daughter, but I am unable to transport my daughter in fear of endangering her life because of a faulty brake system Ford refuses to recall.

The contact's brother veered to the side of the road. The contact stated that upon turning off and restarting the vehicle, he was able to continue to drive; however, the failure reoccurred while exiting the highway. The contact stated that the vehicle would fail to go into gear while attempting to shift into drive and depressing the accelerator pedal. POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-02-01
- VIN: 1fmcu59h67k
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: This Escape is an AWD Hybrid. When driving in slippery snow, sand, ice, etc., the front wheels spin, but there is no power transmitted to the rear wheels, causing serious control and traction problems. An "all-wheel-drive-locked" signal appears on the info display, followed instantly by "AWD disabled". After a while (a couple minutes), the system then comes back and says "Automatic AWD restored". Which is simply not true—AWD never engages, but a driver going into a snowstorm or other difficult situation has no way of knowing this until it's too late. Problem was diagnosed by a good mechanic as a faulty transfer case—a very common problem in 2002—2011 AWD Ford Escapes. There is a serious design problem—the transfer case is too close to the exhaust, which cooks the internal lubricant, causes it to leak out completely, and kills the bearings inside the case. There are many cases on forums of this problem causing locked wheels at speed, sudden lack of drive on highways, etc. Not to mention the problem (as in my case) of drivers entering dangerous driving situations where they are counting on AWD for safe driving, but having just front wheel drive, with absolutely no warning from the car. I have no idea why this has not resulted in a. recall so far, but it is an serious, obvious (and worsening) safety issue. Parts and labor cost will be over $1000. Dissection of fragged transfer cases destroyed by this problem is easily available online: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yLkr609bfI
SERVICE BRAKES,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-18
- VIN: 1FMCU92ZX7K
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: On 12/10/21 the accelerator stuck. I had to pull off the road, because I was losing power. But what if it got stuck at a high rate of speed? How would I stop, other than the hand brake and pray that it works. It had happened another time that week, but I thought it was a fluke as the car only has 85000 miles on it. I bought it in Sept 2021. It happened again on the 11th. Had my family member look at it and they lubricated the accelerator and a cable in the engine compartment. It has not done it since. Here is the VIN # [XXX]. 12/18/21 Drove to church. No problem with anything. No lights on.... the dash. Family member left to go home for the afternoon and stated that they almost hit a herd of deer, because the brakes went straight to the floor. They drove back for the evening program, with the same problem. I drove home about 35 miles an hour, and the brake pedal goes straight to the floor. No noise of any kind, no warning, no puddles where the car was parked at church or at home. The brake light is on now. What in the world. This could be fatal... both of these issues. FORD just told me there are no recalls, and then sent me to a survey. They need to look into these issues....Poor customer service in my opinion and could be a fatal situation. Last week was unable to get in for an appointment within a 50 mile radius to get that problem looked at. NOT able to be seen till after the new year.... ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-03-20
- VIN: 1FMYU03Z37k
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The theft system randomly sounds off for no reason. The theft light keeps blinking as the key is placed in the run position. The vehicle is having issues starting and there's no sound at all when turning the key. When the vehicle does start it stalls, so the gas pedal must be pushed almost to the floor. I must apply strong pressure to the breaks, so that I can stop and not crash. The problem is not changing and other ownsers are having these same issue with this truck. I've already had the battery checked, starter replaced, purchased a new key , and fob.
SERVICE BRAKES, AIR,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-06-01
- VIN: 1fmcu59hx7k
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, AIR,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The contact owns a 2007 Ford Escape Hybrid. The contact stated that an abnormal grinding noise would emit from vehicle upon depression of the brake pedal. The contact had taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic for repair. The contact was informed that the ABS module needed to be replaced. The dealer was contacted, and parts were ordered for the repair. The dealer sent the parts to the independent mechanic who repaired the vehicle. Recently, the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the ABS warning light illuminated as the grinding noise returned. The contact also stated that the brake pedal had begun to depress to the floorboard. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle has been repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 43,000.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-07-30
- VIN: 1FMCU49H67K
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Vehicle lost power unexpectedly in traffic several times. Once stopped it started after a pause and ran fine for a considerable time until if failed again. When researching online noticed that this year and model had a recall but that is not reflected when I ran the VIN of my 2007 Ford Escape Hybrid. My concern is the diagnosis at the dealer will not detect this and could result in needless expense which I am not prepared for. The NHTSA has this issue documented and I feel should qualify me to have the coolant pump replaced on a recall before a serious accident.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-04-03
- VIN: 1FMYU59H77K
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: PURCHASED THIS PRE-OWNED WITH ONLY 40K MILES. IT'S NOW ONLY AT 45K MILES AND RANDOMLY THE ABS LIGHT AND SERVICE BRAKES NOTIFICATION CAME ON THE DASHBOARD. TOOK IT TO A GARAGE AND HAD THEM SCAN AND IT SEEMS TO BE ABS RELATED. STILL HAVE NO REPAIRED BUT FROM READING ALL OVER FORUMS, REDDIT, GOOGLE SEARCHES, AND MORE THIS SEEMS TO BE AN EXTREMELY COMMON PROBLEM THAT COSTS A TON TO REPAIR. FORD SHOULD HANDLE THIS AS A RECALL IF IT IS A REGULAR ISSUE WITH THIS MAKE AND MODEL. HOW IS THERE NO CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT YET? IT SEEMS COUNTLESS PEOPLE ARE MENTIONING THAT THE BRAKES OUTRIGHT FAILED WHILE DRIVING ON THE ROAD OR EVEN HIGHWAYS. WHAT IF SOMEONE DIES? THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-02-07
- VIN: 1FMCU49H97K
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: HELLO, I HAVE A 2007 FORD ESCAPE HYBRID. THE CAR IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION INSIDE AND OUT EXCEPT FOR THE BRAKING SYSTEM. THE BRAKING SYSTEM HAS BEEN SYSTEMATICALLY HARD TO PRESS THE PEDAL SINCE I HAVE OWNED IT DUE TO BEING A HYBRID, HOWEVER, THE BRAKING SYSTEM IS FAILING AS OF 2 DAYS AGO. CONSISTENT WITH MANY, MANY OTHER FORD ESCAPE HYBRIDS, THE BRAKING SYSTEM WARNING LIGHTS, ABS WARNING LIGHTS AND BRAKE SYSTEM SERVICE WARNING WILL SPORADICALLY ENGAGE ON THE VEHICLE. EVEN WITHOUT THE WARNING LIGHTS, THIS VEHICLES BRAKES WILL NOW FAIL, OFTEN DROPPING COMPLETELY TO THE FLOOR OF THE VEHICLE WITHOUT WARNING. AS THE BRAKES ARE A VITAL COMPONENT OF THE VEHICLE THE FAILURE HAS COME DURING CRITICAL TIMES, VIA STOP SIGNS, STOP LIGHTS, STOPPED TRAFFIC, NEARLY CAUSING SERIOUS INJURIES OR FATALITIES. WHEN THE WARNING LIGHTS ENGAGE, THE BRAKING PEDAL IS HARD, BUT DOES FAIL AS WELL. AN IMMEDIATE SERVICE PERFORMED AT THE LOCAL GARAGE DETERMINED THE CAR MALFUNCTIONING BRAKE SYSTEM IS DUE TO THE MASTER BRAKE CYLINDER AND HYDRAULIC BRAKE PUMP, CONNECTED TO THE HYBRID SYSTEM WHICH IS HIGHLY CONSISTENT WITH ALL EARLY MODEL FORD ESCAPES. REPAIR ESTIMATES EXCEED $5000-7000 USD. THE BRAKING PROBLEM WITH THE EARLY GENERATION FORD ESCAPE PROBLEMS IS ENDEMIC, AND DESERVING OF ADDITIONAL SCRUTINY AND ATTENTION FROM THE NTHSA. THESE CARS ARE DEADLY AS SET, AND THANKFULLY MY FAMILY HAS NOT HAD AN ACCIDENT OR DEATH. PLEASE GIVE THESE VEHICLES ADDITIONAL SCRUTINY, AS IT IS NOT OBSCURE TO SEE WIDESPREAD BRAKING MALFUNCTIONS NATIONWIDE. FORD WILL NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM.

I CHECKED AROUND AS TO THE COST OF REPAIR; AND IT IS EXPENSIVE. APPROX: $600-1,000) THAT IS A LOT OF MONEY WHICH IS CLOSE TO THE VECHILE'S VALUE. Congratulations on your 4th year of ownership! It's great to hear that you haven't had any repairs or rattles after 40,000 miles of mixed paved and gravel roads. The outstanding fuel mileage and electric mode at reasonable speeds for a couple of minutes, using regular gas, is definitely a plus. You also mentioned that it has a great road view, backup sensors, nimble steering feel, back seat comfort, storage, and low wind noise. It's impressive that it feels more powerful than its wee motors add up to and is a good 4WD snow handler. However, it's unfortunate that the rear wheel fender flare was destroyed by gravel from front tires and the paint is almost gone there. The CD player under the seat seems a bit goofy and it can be tiresome on long drives from the buzzy engine and

I received my new 2007 Escape in June and it has been a great replacement for my 2000 Explorer XLT with 170K miles. I have been driving it for 6 months and have already covered 14K miles. The gas mileage is steady at 22 mpg, which is about 7 mpg better than my '00 Explorer. Although there are some weak areas such as the rear brakes, which are drum rather than disc, and there is driveline vibration at times, plus noticeable rattles and general mechanical noise, I would still recommend the Escape. However, I would suggest getting one with front and rear disc brakes to avoid the noticeable and dangerous rear brake fade. Overall, I am still very happy with my Escape after 6 months of driving it.

The car gets a decent mileage of about 27 to 29 mpg in realistic driving. It would be great if the buttons were repositioned, for example, the seat warmers could be moved from the center console to the side of the seat. When it comes to the tax credit, it's important to be aware that it deflates on a ratio to income. In my case, the $2600 tax credit ended up being $159. The economy is still there, but it's important to exercise caution on the credit sliding scale. Overall, I think it's a great car!
-
Plenty of power for on and off freeways plus passing at highway speeds. Power management system is seamless and CVT transmission is so smooth. Comfortable ride and satisfactorily quiet. The current $2600 federal tax credit makes this vehicle's total cost to own reasonable. Overall, this vehicle is fun to drive and the best hybrid value in the market.
-
You've found a great practical SUV at a basic price, with far better than basic overall quality and features!

Owning a Hybrid Escape was initially enjoyable, but unfortunately, after the first 6 months, we started experiencing some issues. Despite regular services, filter replacements, and tire changes, the mileage began to decrease. Additionally, the door lock actuator on the driver's side stopped working properly, which can be inconvenient in an emergency. Occasionally, the lights on the Gauge Cluster go out, making it difficult to see how fast we're going at night. Unfortunately, we recently had to spend $1200 to repair the water pump at 63,000 miles. While we have had some challenges with this car, we are hopeful that future maintenance will be smoother.

Hi there! I purchased the Escape Hybrid AWD for two reasons - exhaust emissions and fuel economy. While I'm assuming the emissions are meeting my expectations, the fuel economy is nowhere near the ratings of 33/29 for city/highway. During this mild Minnesota winter, I'm only getting around 23 mpg. However, it's still better than the 16 mpg I got in the winter with my 2003 Chevy Trailblazer LTZ. Although the Hybrid is much less of a vehicle than the Trailblazer, I will say that the Escape with its front-wheel drive tracks better in snow than the Trailblazer. Overall, for my first hybrid vehicle, the Escape is adequate. Thanks for listening!

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with the 2007 Hybrid FWD. While the official rating is 36mpg in the city, I've found that in my personal experience, I only get around 23-24mpg, even with the A/C turned off. The Ford dealer suggested that it needed to be driven for 2,000-3,000 miles to be broken in before the mileage would improve, but even after 5,000 miles, I haven't seen any improvement. I understand that it's common to not get the exact rated mpg, but I was disappointed to see such a significant difference. What has your experience been like?

I average 21 mpg with a best of 24.3. I brought my SUV into Ford and they claimed it gets 31.3mpg. However, when I had an independent garage test it, it was 21 mpg. I also checked it manually, and the on-board PC fuel is accurate at 21 mpg. Despite my efforts to improve the mileage, I have not been able to get better than 24.3 mpg. I have the AWD model and the engine runs if any accessories are on. Additionally, the engine kicks in after 25 mph and right away if any upgrade. Overall, I like the Escape hybrid, but I feel disappointed after paying an extra $12,000 to be green. I think it's fair to expect 20% less mileage off EPA listing and the navigation could be improved. Perhaps Ford could learn from what Toyota is offering. I currently own 2 new Fords, but I am unsure if I will purchase another one in the future.
