Gmc Yukon problems
The Chevrolet Tahoe, and its badge-engineered GMC Yukon counterpart, are full-size SUVs and other trucks from General Motors, offered since 1994 and 1991, respectively. Since 1982, Chevrolet and GMC sold two different-sized SUVs under their "Blazer" and "Jimmy" nameplates, by introducing the smaller S-10 Blazer and GMC S-15 Jimmy for the 1983 model year, below the full-size Blazer and Jimmy models. This situation lasted into the early 1990s. GMC first rebadged the full-size Jimmy as the "Yukon" in 1991. Chevrolet however waited until 1994, when they rebadged the redesigned mid-size S-10 Blazer the "new Blazer," while renaming the full-size Blazer as the "Tahoe." The name Tahoe refers to the rugged and scenic area surrounding Lake Tahoe in the western United States, and was originally used as a trim level on S-10 models. The name Yukon refers to the Yukon territory of northern Canada.
For the 1995 model year, the Tahoe and Yukon gained a new, longer four-door model, slotting in size between the two-door models and the longer-wheelbase Chevrolet/GMC Suburbans.
The Tahoe is sold in North America, parts of Asia such as the Philippines, and the Middle East, plus other countries including Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Angola as a left-hand-drive vehicle. The Yukon is only sold in North America and the Middle East.
The Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon are part of General Motors' full-size SUV family and are differentiated from the similar Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL primarily by the length of the passenger and cargo area behind the C-pillar. An upscale trim GMC Denali sub-model joined the Yukon lineup as the top-of-the-line trim for the 1999 model year; the Cadillac Escalade is a closely related upscale version sharing the same platform. The Denali is available on both standard and XL versions.
The Tahoe has regularly been the best-selling full-size SUV in the United States, frequently outselling its competition by two to one.

Common Gmc Yukon problems
Based on the information from the sources provided, here are some common problems with GMC Yukon cars based on complaints from owners:
- Tailgate Light Not Working Properly:
- The most common issue reported with GMC Yukons is the tailgate light not working. This is a cosmetic issue that requires the whole fixture to be replaced, which can be relatively expensive.
- This problem is more prevalent in the 2015 model year.
- Excessive Oil Consumption:
- Excessive oil consumption is another common problem with GMC Yukons, especially in the years to avoid. While not extreme, it can lead to increased maintenance costs.
- Sealing the engine won't fix this issue, and it can worsen over time. The best solution is to carry extra oil and monitor oil levels regularly.
- AC Not Working Properly:
- The 2015 Yukon is prone to A/C failure, with repairs costing around $1,000 on average. This issue can impact the cost of ownership but is not unreasonable to fix.
- The type of A/C failure can affect repair costs, making it essential to address promptly.
- Faulty Lights:
- Tail lights are prone to early failure in GMC Yukons, with symptoms ranging from moisture on the lens to lights not working at all.
- Issues with headlights, brake lights, and turn signal lights can also occur, affecting visibility and safety.
- Transmission Troubles:
- While less common, transmission problems in GMC Yukons can impact road performance and safety. Issues like hesitation, vibration, and unexpected gear shifts have been reported.
- The 2015 model year received the most complaints related to transmission problems, highlighting the need for attention to this issue.
These problems can vary in severity and impact on the overall performance and safety of GMC Yukon vehicles. Regular maintenance, prompt repairs, and awareness of these common issues can help owners address these problems effectively and ensure the longevity of their vehicles.

- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: When vehicle is turned on OR during normal driving, audio volume randomly goes to full high mode (all the way up) to a deafening level that makes it difficult to drive. The knob, steering wheel controls and any connected devices (like the phone) do not control the audio. Audio setting is completely unresponsive and will not turn down. It is not possible to drive in this condition. I had to pull over and turn my car off. I turned it on and off several times before the audio did not come on full blast and I could safely drive my car. This is the third time this has happened to me. Two out of 3 times I had a young child in the car.

Gmc Yukon 2021
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-30
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-11
- VIN: 1GKS2DKL6MR
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I bought a brand new Yukon Denali in 2021. In 2022 at 12,000 miles, the car was riding extremely rough. It was diagnosed as a transmission issue and the transmission was rebuilt after 90 days in the service department at a GMC dealer. Later in 2022, I started getting low oil lights on the dash. The car was brought back to GMC and I was told that there aren't any leaks evident so nothing was done. This happened repeatedly over the last 2 years, at multiple GMC service departments. No leaks, nothing to see here. Last week, the car started shaking violently while driving, with multiple warning lights appearing on the dash. Finally the car just died and I had it towed to yet another GMC dealership. This time I was told that the bearings, piston rings and lifters were all to blame and the car needed a new engine. Of course, now the car is out of warranty. GMC needs to remedy the engine issues in the 2021 models. There are MANY reports of this happening with this engine.

The previous week, the truck shut off completely as well but it turned on quickly.
Gmc Yukon 2016
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-07
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-08
- VIN: 1GKS2CKJ8GR
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: When driving through Eugene brakes suddenly got soft while at a stoplight, then pedal got stiff and very hard to keep pressed. An alert came on the dashboard 'Brake Assist Service' just about the same time the brake pedal changed and car would not fully stay at a stop. When checking to feel what had just happened, by letting up and repressing the brakes, it would not fully stop car, even with all my strength pressing. If another car would have been coming through, my young son or myself could have been killed or seriously injured and I could cause someone seriously to be hurt or killed from being in their lane of travel. I alerted my husband that I was unable to drive the vehicle safely, he is in the vehicle industry and looked up online and found there is a common known problem, recalls, and service bulletins, but apparently not for vehicle years prior to 2017, although this severe failure is seen on 2014 and later; and the manual tests/diagnostics that a person can do in a pinch per the bulletin, recall notice, and articles; and in his trials of how to tell if it is a failure or fleeting problem - nothing alleviated it, all the symptoms are present and system is failing and continually bringing up the brake assist service alert. This is the info that we found on the recall, but didn't appear to cover 2016 year models: [NHTSA campaign number: 20V603. GM's own number for this recall is N202300860.] We plan to get this yukon over to Guaranty Chevrolet in Junction City Oregon tomorrow 10/8. The only thing that has been very recently noticeable preceding this in recent week or so is a slight uneven braking feeling in the motion of the car when coming to a stop. Which it has not done before.
Gmc Yukon 2018
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-01
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-07
- VIN: 1GKS2CKJ4JR
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I have noticed the amount of pressure needed to apply brakes at a slow speed is a lot to where it seems like I will crash into the car or object in the way of my vehicle. I took my vehicle to a GMC dealership and was told the brake vacuum pump needs to be replaced. These vacuum pumps were already recalled by NHTSA. NHTSA #19V645000, GM #N192268490. This recall was expanded to include additional vehicles. NHTSA #20V603, GM #N202300860. I strongly believe my vehicle needs to be included in this recall. GMC repair invoice is attached.
Gmc Yukon 2021
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-23
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-24
- VIN: 1GKS2DKL6MR
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: On 9/23/2024, I was driving my 2021 GMC Yukon Denali down the road, when the Engine seemed to lose power, and the accelerator no longer worked. There were no indications of any errors or alarms on the Dash, and all functions on the interior of the Cabin showed as normal. The vehicle switched into Neutral, and the engine shut off and I was unable to control or accelerate. This is a extremely serious situation and extremely dangerous in terms of Safety.
Gmc Yukon 2016
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-06
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-21
- VIN: 1GKS1BKC4GR
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: While taking my children to school, the vehicles RPMs began to jump, causing the vehicle to lose power. Which resulted in myself and two children stranded on the side of the road. The vehicle had just crossed over 110,000 miles when the transmission completely broke apart from the inside. There was no other warnings or lights that appeared on the dash prior to or after. We had been given an estimate from GM for $6200 for a new transmission.. but that was extremely difficult to afford. We ultimately had to have the transmission rebuilt due to it costing $3,000 less, so we could continue going to work. We are still having issues with the transmission even after taking to back for a 2nd time to be reprogrammed. It’s extremely frustrating to have paid so much for this Yukon to have transmission go out with as many miles as it did, plus with no warnings.
Gmc Yukon 2023
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-24
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-17
- VIN: 1GKS2DKL6PR
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: Serious Safety Issue: While driving in the Rain, with the wipers on (actively working), randomly they will stop working. They will not work again until 10-15 minutes of time has passed. Any alternative setting makes no difference. During the 10-15 minutes of non-working wipers, there is nothing the driver can do…. Except wait. Depending where and when this occurs, this could be a deadly safety issue. I’ve checked the fuse; Turned off the rain auto-sensing feature – yet the vehicle is scary to drive in the rain, not knowing if / when the wipers may stop working again. During my ownership of this vehicle, this has happened three times; of course you must be driving during rain for the issue to occur.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-14
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-12
- VIN: 1GKS2BKT4NR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The dealer claims it was a faulty battery. Said it had a short in it. I have the battery and it can be inspected. I firmly believe it was software related. I was driving and the vehicle completely shut off while driving. I was unable to steer, restart, use the power assisted brakes, or navigate to a safe area. I was unable to restart the vehicle and it had to be towed. The problem was never reproduced and has not occurred again. The vehicle was inspected by the dealer. All possible warning lights came on the dash and display. The radio and Bluetooth still worked.

- VIN: 1GKS2BKT4NR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: The servicing dealer identified a faulty injector wiring harness. A national backorder caused a delay in repair. I do not have the part. The dealer retained. I was driving at highway speeds on the interstate and every possible warning light came on the dash. "Service ESC" "Service Traction Control", Reduced Acceleration Drive with Care", "Forward Collision System Unavailable", "Service Emmision System" At this point, I experienced a loss of power and acceleration, and the vehicle would shake violently when I applied the accelerator pedal. There was no indication of any failure prior to the failure.
Gmc Yukon 2016
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-11
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-12
- VIN: 1GKS2CKJ1GR
- Components: SUSPENSION,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: i HAVE A SERVICE SUSPENSION LIGHT THAT CONTINUES TO POP UP ON DASHBOARD THE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED IS THE BRAKE LIGHTS. I have previously had the passenger side brake light stop working. In order to repair this you have to order a whole new taillight. My vehicle was approximatly 6 years old when this started happening. First incident (2022 with approximately 65000 miles) Yesterday, I was pulled over by a policeman and both of my brake lights are not working. We found a way to sauder (I know this is incorrect spelling) the broken metal piece back together in the taillight; however, this is not the correct way to fix the underlying problem and clearly it is only a temporary fix because the passenger side broke again in a new spot.
Gmc Yukon 2015
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-05
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-11
- VIN: 1GKS1CKJ2FR
- Components: POWER TRAIN,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: My vehicle is currently in the shop getting the motor worked on for a bad lifter. From the information the mechanic provided me this is a common issue with the vehicles that have the Active Fuel Management system. They are seeing many of these vehicles have to come in and have very expensive repairs. My first quote I received was $16, 000, they told me I needed a whole new motor and this assessment cost me $365 and a rental car while they looked at the truck. Now it is in the shop again and the estimate is $6000 to machine the cams as there are metal shavings in my oil. I had to again rent a rental vehicle and have not had my truck for a week. This is the third mechanic that has seen multiple of these motors have to be replaced or repaired due to this issue. I kept up on my oil changes and other recommended car maintenance and so did the owner before me. I had my last oil change approx. a week before the loud ticking noise began, then my vehicle began to have a noticeable loss of power when driving and eventually began shuttering and my check engine light began to blink and I took it to the shop. A year ago I had to replace my tail lights. I was able to find where others were recalled by my VIN for some reason was not included in the recall. They started shorting out and working only part of the time which is very dangerous when stopping, especially at night. I had them replaced and paid almost $700 for the two back lights.
