2021 Gmc Yukon problems

The Chevrolet Tahoe, and its badge-engineered GMC Yukon counterpart, are full-size SUVs and other trucks from General Motors, offered since 1994 and 1991, respectively. Since 1982, Chevrolet and GMC sold two different-sized SUVs under their "Blazer" and "Jimmy" nameplates, by introducing the smaller S-10 Blazer and GMC S-15 Jimmy for the 1983 model year, below the full-size Blazer and Jimmy models. This situation lasted into the early 1990s. GMC first rebadged the full-size Jimmy as the "Yukon" in 1991. Chevrolet however waited until 1994, when they rebadged the redesigned mid-size S-10 Blazer the "new Blazer," while renaming the full-size Blazer as the "Tahoe." The name Tahoe refers to the rugged and scenic area surrounding Lake Tahoe in the western United States, and was originally used as a trim level on S-10 models. The name Yukon refers to the Yukon territory of northern Canada.

For the 1995 model year, the Tahoe and Yukon gained a new, longer four-door model, slotting in size between the two-door models and the longer-wheelbase Chevrolet/GMC Suburbans.

The Tahoe is sold in North America, parts of Asia such as the Philippines, and the Middle East, plus other countries including Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Angola as a left-hand-drive vehicle. The Yukon is only sold in North America and the Middle East.

The Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon are part of General Motors' full-size SUV family and are differentiated from the similar Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL primarily by the length of the passenger and cargo area behind the C-pillar. An upscale trim GMC Denali sub-model joined the Yukon lineup as the top-of-the-line trim for the 1999 model year; the Cadillac Escalade is a closely related upscale version sharing the same platform. The Denali is available on both standard and XL versions.

The Tahoe has regularly been the best-selling full-size SUV in the United States, frequently outselling its competition by two to one.

Common 2021 Gmc Yukon problems

The 2021 GMC Yukon has some common problems that owners have reported, which include excessive brake wear, engine noise, and stereo system issues.

Excessive brake wear is the most widespread complaint from 2021 Yukon owners, with some reporting the issue within the first 15,000 miles. The Yukon is a heavy SUV, and the front brake pads in particular tend to wear out quickly. Replacing the brake pads costs around $200, while new rotors are an extra $550 if they have been damaged.

Engine noise is another issue mentioned by some Yukon owners at around 5,000 miles. The engine noise is more pronounced in lower trim levels, which don’t have the same level of sound insulation. Some people install aftermarket sound insulation, costing around $500.

Stereo system issues have also been reported on the Yukon within the first 1,000 miles. There are some over-the-air software updates available for the stereo system, which improves its reliability. These are installed for free while the vehicle is parked and off, but dealers can also manually install them.

The 2021 GMC Yukon has 11 recalls, which is worse than some other full-size SUVs from the same year. The most serious recall covers the driveshaft, which may come loose. GMC will replace the bolts on affected models for free.

As a used 2021 Yukon reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history report, owners should be prepared to replace the battery cable for $300, the brake pressure sensor costing $350, along with the A/C evaporator, which costs $1,300.

Despite these issues, the 2021 GMC Yukon is a reliable vehicle overall, and a well-maintained one can last around 250,000 miles. Regular annual maintenance costs are slightly higher than average, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $707 per year.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-30
  • VIN: 1GKS2DKL6MR
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I bought a brand new Yukon Denali in 2021. In 2022 at 12,000 miles, the car was riding extremely rough. It was diagnosed as a transmission issue and the transmission was rebuilt after 90 days in the service department at a GMC dealer. Later in 2022, I started getting low oil lights on the dash. The car was brought back to GMC and I was told that there aren't any leaks evident so nothing was done. This happened repeatedly over the last 2 years, at multiple GMC service departments. No leaks, nothing to see here. Last week, the car started shaking violently while driving, with multiple warning lights appearing on the dash. Finally the car just died and I had it towed to yet another GMC dealership. This time I was told that the bearings, piston rings and lifters were all to blame and the car needed a new engine. Of course, now the car is out of warranty. GMC needs to remedy the engine issues in the 2021 models. There are MANY reports of this happening with this engine.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-23
  • VIN: 1GKS2DKL6MR
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: On 9/23/2024, I was driving my 2021 GMC Yukon Denali down the road, when the Engine seemed to lose power, and the accelerator no longer worked. There were no indications of any errors or alarms on the Dash, and all functions on the interior of the Cabin showed as normal. The vehicle switched into Neutral, and the engine shut off and I was unable to control or accelerate. This is a extremely serious situation and extremely dangerous in terms of Safety.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-30
  • VIN: 1GKS2DKLXMR
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: [XXX] on [XXX] Yukon stalled mid-drive as we exited [XXX] toward [XXX] . This is the SECOND stall on this Yukon. I had reported the first stall on June 04-2024 [11594097]. This time it would not start at all, and locked into P. There was a strange noise coming from the engine when we were on [XXX].We were going 65mph. My husband told me to start recording a video so that we can capture the noise, within 1-min as we started to exit on [XXX] towards Wake Forest, the sound was getting louder, the car started shaking as we started to slow down towards the entrance to [XXX], the engine cut-off. It smelled like burning, there was no smoke but the smell was strong.  It would not start after multiple attempts, it would not shift it locked on P. At this point, the ENGINE LIGHT went on! Electric was still on, air conditioning turned off, no messages on the dashboard. The only warning was a metal like rubbing coming from the engine. I will upload this 16-min video to TikTok as a multipart series, since my multiple complaints have been falling on deaf ears! We called Gm Roadside for a  tow, they said to call 911. We called 911 about 4 times and they did not have anyone to come. Gm roadside assistance could not get AAA to come until 9:45pm. AAA called us around 9:40 informing us that the available tow cannot move this Yukon because it would not shift gear to N and it will require a specific tow truck. We called back GM roadside about 5 times, just run around with no solution and a lot of attitude and lack of concern! Finally the Raleigh police Supervisor arrived, minutes later a State trooper offered assistance. They wanted the car off the road, GM was still on the phone and put them on speaker with the officer. Finally the office requested their tow as GM FAILED to get a compatible tow truck, we paid out of pocket, CASH! The Police drove us home around 11:30pm! GM DID not have contracted equipment for their OWN Trucks! New lows for GM! Incredible! POST COVID INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  • VIN: 1GKS2DKLXMR
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: 1. Fuel pump control mod 2. my car gave me only a second warning before it shut down entirely. I was somehow able to get to the side of the road. no car going to the car 3. It was replaced at an independent service station. They called GMC dealership for assistance on diagnosis. Dealership said this is happening 4. No warning lights at all. No car trouble at all. Car is fully up to date on maintenance This is only a 2021 car with such low mileage you expect to a car to run properly if well maintained. I called the GMC dealership and spoke to the Service manager and he just said that these things happen. Cars are complicated these days. I found that unacceptable since I could have been killed if someone was directly behind me and I could not get to safety. I spent $416 to get towed from a NJ towing company since AAA is not allowed to tow me on the Garden State parkway. . I spent $165 to get to Philadelphia to catch my flight since I did not have a car. I hope that this major shutdown of this car can be addressed and the answer is not just that cars are complicated these days. Thank you.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-24
  • VIN: 1GKS2CKD5MR
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: There are apparently a couple of faults affecting the SRS and leading to a periodic airbag light and "Service SRS" warning. GM has issued/revised a few Service Bulletins related to this warning. Some are related to software, some are related to overhead wiring, some are related to the clock spring in the steering wheel, and some are related to the driver's side airbag module. My understanding is that when the SRS warning appears, all airbags are disabled and GM says we drive our vehicles at our own risk. To my knowledge this has affected several models of approximately 2021-2023 GMC (Yukon and Sierra) and Chevrolet (Tahoe, Suburban, Silverado) SUVs and trucks.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-26
  • VIN: 1GKS2BKD5MR
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Twice in a five day span vehicle stalled out, acting like it is not getting fuel. Each time it took several minutes of trying to restart and getting below fuel tank to give it a couple knocks to get it to start. Both times there was atleast a half tank of gas. Each time the car was running well when it suddenly slowed down on its own, the first time I was on a busy street resulting in the need for a tow and I had my grand baby with me. The second time it was an isolated road and surprisingly I had cell service to call for assistance. The tow truck driver told me he thought it was the fuel pump. I looked up my vin but it isn’t listed as one of the affected vehicles in the GMC Yukon recall, however it certainly seems like it is. I had no warning of any type with each incident, the car simply acted as if it ran out of gas. I have an appointment with a local garage. Additionally when this happens the vehicle does not let me shut it off. The engine isn’t running but I can’t power down the electronics system.

  • Summary: Car started making strange noises in the rear portion and was not driving as it normally would. Proceeded to take the vehicle to a GMC service dept. and was told the rear differential is close to failure and is "shot" and needs to be replaced. The service representative advised us to not drive the vehicle because it is unsafe to operate. Upon investigating it appears there was a recall for 2021 Yukon's for this same issue however this VIN number was not included in the recall but it appears this is the same issue. My vehicle remains at the service center waiting for the "differential assembly" to be replaced but it is currently on backorder and we were given no time frame of when this will be resolved or when the parts will be available.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-11
  • VIN: 1GKS2CKD5MR
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: The lighting on the entire interior infotainment area will randomly go bright and dim all by itself. I was almost in an accident on the interstate due to this. It was blinding and distracting to have the lighting dim and then go bright. It has been randomly doing this for about a month. I called GMC and they said they had no record of this happening on other vehicles, however when I searched for the issue with my vehicle, I realized other GMC owners have experienced the same issue. I was able to get a video of it happening one morning while waiting in my driveway to drop my kids off at the bus stop. I was in the parked position. There are no warning or messages when the lighting malfunctions, so I am not at all prepared when the car turns the lighting to MAX brightness. It poses a risk when driving by blinding the driver, causing the driver to loose focus while driving trying to adjust the lighting back to dim. It is an unnecessary distraction. The dealership couldn't confirm any malfunctions in my car. As previously stated, I have a video of the malfunction, but I am not able to upload it. I am willing to send via email.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-01
  • VIN: 1GKS2CKD2MR
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My family and I purchased this vehicle brand new in August 2021. We live in Phoenix Arizona and bought it from Earnhardt Buick & GMA in Mesa, AZ. While driving the vehicle in the last few weeks I personally could smell a strong odor of fumes in the cabin when the A/C or Heater were on. After a few days of noticing it my nose got numb to the odor as I dismissed it and kept driving the vehicle. After about a week, I had my two kids in the vehicle, they both noticed and made comments on how strong the odor of fumes were. We decided to not utilize the A/C or the Heater and contacted the dealer for investigation and repairs. This is a very serious health hazard as I and my family were exposed to exhaust fumes entering the cabin. For a few days and nights I suffered headaches and some dizziness as I was driving mostly the vehicle. We did take it to Earnhardt Buick & GMA in Mesa, AZ for investigation and repair. The maintenance supervisor confirmed that indeed somehow the exhaust had some crack that allowed fumes to enter the ventilation system. The Vehicle is now under repair at the dealership. I was notified by the maintenance advisor that this defect would not be cover under warranty as the vehicle is out of manufacture warranty. I Also had purchased an extended warranty (Platinum) which they had stated "bumper to bumper", but this also does not cover the manufactures defect. There were no warning lights associated with this problem. I would strongly recommend that inspections be made, especially if some drivers have problem with smell and odors. This is a big health hazard. Thank you for your attention. [XXX] . [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-20
  • VIN: 1GKS2BKD5MR
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: On Monday, November 20, 2023, I was operating my vehicle on Interstate 80 in western Nebraska when suddenly and without any notice, apparently an engine lifter in cylinder 8 failed causing the vehicle to lose power while in heavy semi-truck traffic, while operating at approximately 80 mph, forcing me to avoid a collision. Since the incident, I have become aware that this is a known problem with GMC, and that they have extended their power train warranty under certain circumstances because so many engine lifters are failing, many without notice or warning. My vehicle is serviced every 6,000 miles at a GM dealer and also operates the OnStar system. Neither the dealer nor OnStar detected the failure or warned me of any issues that cause a stall while in traffic. Fortunately, I am an experienced driver and was able to safely pull the vehicle off the highway.
