1996 Gmc Yukon problems
The Chevrolet Tahoe, and its badge-engineered GMC Yukon counterpart, are full-size SUVs and other trucks from General Motors, offered since 1994 and 1991, respectively. Since 1982, Chevrolet and GMC sold two different-sized SUVs under their "Blazer" and "Jimmy" nameplates, by introducing the smaller S-10 Blazer and GMC S-15 Jimmy for the 1983 model year, below the full-size Blazer and Jimmy models. This situation lasted into the early 1990s. GMC first rebadged the full-size Jimmy as the "Yukon" in 1991. Chevrolet however waited until 1994, when they rebadged the redesigned mid-size S-10 Blazer the "new Blazer," while renaming the full-size Blazer as the "Tahoe." The name Tahoe refers to the rugged and scenic area surrounding Lake Tahoe in the western United States, and was originally used as a trim level on S-10 models. The name Yukon refers to the Yukon territory of northern Canada.
For the 1995 model year, the Tahoe and Yukon gained a new, longer four-door model, slotting in size between the two-door models and the longer-wheelbase Chevrolet/GMC Suburbans.
The Tahoe is sold in North America, parts of Asia such as the Philippines, and the Middle East, plus other countries including Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Angola as a left-hand-drive vehicle. The Yukon is only sold in North America and the Middle East.
The Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon are part of General Motors' full-size SUV family and are differentiated from the similar Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL primarily by the length of the passenger and cargo area behind the C-pillar. An upscale trim GMC Denali sub-model joined the Yukon lineup as the top-of-the-line trim for the 1999 model year; the Cadillac Escalade is a closely related upscale version sharing the same platform. The Denali is available on both standard and XL versions.
The Tahoe has regularly been the best-selling full-size SUV in the United States, frequently outselling its competition by two to one.

Common 1996 Gmc Yukon problems
The GMC Yukon, a robust and reliable SUV, has had its fair share of problems over the years. While the engines offered, especially the mighty V8 variants, have not faced many issues, other model-specific drawbacks have affected the reliability ratings of certain Yukon years.
Transmission faults are a common issue, particularly in automatic gearboxes. Any sound coming from the transmission, such as slipping or harsh shifting, could indicate a problem. A more serious concern is the issue with the shifter interlock, which can cause the shifter lever to fall out of park mode without warning, potentially leading to a rollaway problem.
Electric issues have plagued the third-generation Yukon, produced from 2007 to 2014. Problems include the A/C heater malfunction, exterior lighting, and electronic stability control fault, which can initiate sudden braking. A faulty sensor may cause this electric failure, posing a significant safety hazard.
The driveshaft assembly, particularly the rear driveshaft, has also been a problem area. In the 2022 Yukon, the driveshaft assembly was not made heat-resistant enough, causing sudden power losses while driving and increasing the risk of a crash.
Other issues reported by GMC Yukon owners include faulty lights, with tail lights being the most likely to fail early in any Yukon model year at an average mileage of 60,000 miles. Moisture can form on the lens of headlights and brake lights as well, and the turn signal light may not light up when you make a turn. Interior problems include loud noises from the dashboard, electronic accessories not working, and the dashboard fracturing and becoming eyesores that drive down the SUV’s resale value.
In summary, while the GMC Yukon is generally a reliable SUV, certain model years and specific issues have affected its overall reliability ratings. Regular maintenance and inspections by a trusted mechanic can help identify and address these problems before they become more serious.

- Summary: INSIDE THE REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY, THE CARRIER PART # 12471391 COMPLETLY SHEARED FROM THE PUMPKIN. THE ONLY THING HOLDING THE AXLE AND WHEEL IN PLACE WAS A C-CLAMP. I DID NOT NOTICE ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE SUSPENSION OTHER THAN A PULLING TO THE RIGHT WHICH I HAD TAKEN IT TO THE DEALER FOR PREVIOUSLY ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. IF I HAD NOT QUIT DRIVING THE VEHICLE THE TIRE AND AXLE WOULD OF COMPLETELY WALKED AWAY FROM THE VEHICLE AND COULD OF CAUSED GREAT HARM TO ME AND MY FAMILY. THE MANUFACTOR WAS NOT WILLING TO PAY TO REPLACE THIS DEFECTIVE PART AT FIRST. ACCORDING TO THE DEALER THE CARRIER WAS A DEFECTIVE PART FROM THE MANUFACTOR DUE TO A BAD CASTING. THE VEHICLE WAS JUST 85 DAYS OUTSIDE AN EXTENDED WARRENTY PURCHASED WITH THE TRUCK. THE DEALER DID BUY A NEW CARRIER AND HAD IT INSTALLED AT A 50/50 COST ON THE LABOR. I HAD TO BUY THE NEW BEARINGS, HAVE THE AXLES CHECKED FOR TRU-NESS, HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALER, AND FIND ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORTATION FOR A MONTH AT MY EXPENSE. I WORK FOR THE MANUFACTOR GM IN JANESVILLE WISCONSIN WHERE THE TRUCK WAS BUILT AND THEY DID BACK IN THIS MODEL YEAR HAVE A SHIPMENT OF DEFECTIVE REAR AXLES COME INTO THE PLANT SOME WERE FIXED BECAUSE OF A HOWLING NOISE BEFORE THEY LEFT THE MANUFACTOR, I BELIEVE SOME WERE NOT. THE REAR CARRIER SHOWS SIGNS OF FRACTURES IN THE METAL THAT HAVE BEEN THERE A LONG TIME AND ALSO SHOWS NEW FRACTURES THAT ARE ROUGH AND WHERE THE PART FINALLY LET LOOSE AND SHEARED COMPLETELY. I BELIEVE THAT GMC SHOULD OF COVERED THIS DEFECTIVE PART 100%. PLEASE CALL ME IF YOU NEED ADDITIONAL INFO. I STILL DO HAVE THE DEFECTIVE PART IN MY POSSESION. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2000-12-27
- Fire: 1
- VIN: 1GKEC13R6TJ
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: ON 12-27-00 WE WERE DRIVING DOWN THE FREEWAY WHEN I NOTICED FLAMES COMING FROM THE READIN LIGHT/DOME LIGHT BEHIND THE FRONT SEAT. I BLEW OUT THE FLAMES, THEM MY HUSBAND PUSHED THE LIGHT FIXTURE UP AND BLEW OUT THE FLAMES STILL BURNING INSIDE. THE FIRE DAMAGED THE LIGHT FIXUTE, THE HEADLINER, AND MY 7-MONTH-OLD SON'S CARSEAT (WHICH HE WAS IN AT THE TIME). ON 12-29-00, MY HUSBAND TOOK THE YUKON TO TRI-VALLEY GMC. HE SPOKE WITH THE SERVICE DIRECTORE, PATRICK MADRAZO, AND SHOWED HIM THE DAMAGES. MR. MADRAZO SAID HE HAD TO SPEAK WITH HIS AREA SERVICE MANAGER, WENDELL WEIGEL. ON 1-8-01, MR MADRAZO CALLED TO SAY THAT MR. WEIGEL DETERMINED THAT THE FIRE WAS CAUSED BY THE LIGHT BEING LEFT ON TOO LONG. MY HUSBAND HAD TOLD MR. MADRAZO ON 12-29-00 AND AGAIN ON 1-8-01 THAT THE LIGHT WAS NOT ON, BUT HE SAID THAT GMC WAS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DAMAGES. WE ARE SURE THE LIGHT WAS NOT ON BECAUSE THAT LIGHT WAS NOT EVEN WORKING. ON 2-2-98, WE TOOK THE YUKON TO HERRERA GMC (SAME DEALERSHIP, DIFFERENT NAME AND LOCATION) BECAUSE THAT READING LIGHT WOULD STOP WORKING WHEN MOVED IN THE SOCKET. THEY LOOKED AT THE YUKON AND "FOUND THE WHITE WIRE FEEDING POWER TO THE READING LIGHT WAS NOT MAKING CONTACT AT ALL TIMES." THEY "REMOVED THE LIGHT CONTACT AND STRIPPED THE WIRE BACK AND REINSTALLED." THE LIGHT WORKED FOR ABOUT A YEAR, THEN STOPPED WORKING ALTOGETHER. WE DID NOT TAKE IT BACK FOR REPAIR BECAUSE THE YUKON WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. ON 1-8-01, MY HUSBAND CONTACTED GM. HE EXPLAINED THE SITUATION. ON 1-11-01, MAJA PRUDEN (CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIP MANAGER) CALLED. I EXPLAINED THE ENTIRE SITUATION. SHE ASKED IF THE LIGHT WAS ON, AND I SAID NO. SHE WANTED ME TO TAKE THE YUKON TO ANOTHER DEALERSHIP TO BE LOOKED AT. I ASKED IF ALL THE DEALERSHIPS IN THE AREA WOULD HAVE THE SAME AREA SERVICE MANAGER, BECAUSE IF SO, THAT WOULD NOT HELP. ON 1-16-01, MS. PRUDEN CALLED TO SAY THAT SINCE THERE WAS NO ONE ELSE WHO COULD LOOK AT IT, THAT GM WOULD HAVE TO GO WITH MR. WEIGEL'S DETERMINATION
