2003 Subaru Outback problems
The Subaru Outback is an automotive nameplate used by the Japanese automaker Subaru for two different SUV-themed vehicles: a Legacy-derived crossover station wagon, the Outback (1994–present, also sold as Legacy Outback (Japanese: スバル・レガシィアウトバック, Hepburn: Subaru Regashi Autobakku) in some markets), and an Impreza-derived off-road themed hatchback, the Outback Sport (1994–2011).
Most versions of the Outback wagon and Outback Sport have had all-wheel drive as standard equipment.
History
The original Outback station wagon was derived from the wagon variant of the second-generation Subaru Legacy. The first-generation Legacy, which made its debut in 1989, did not receive the cosmetic and suspension modifications to create an Outback version, although Subaru offered an Outdoor option package for the 1994 model year Legacy L all-wheel drive model, which added a compressed air strut height adjustable suspension, a luggage rack, a skidplate, and mud flaps.
Earlier, a raised-roof "Touring Wagon" variant had been offered on the preceding Subaru Leone for the 1988 and 1989 model years. Subaru also sold a raised-roof variant (chassis code BF) of the first-generation Legacy wagon outside the United States. North American Legacy wagons were only offered as the flat-roof variant (chassis code BJ) until a special "GT" model was marketed for the 1994 model year.
The second-generation Legacy wagon became the first generation of the Outback crossover series, called the "Legacy Grand Wagon" in Japan in 1995, and the "Legacy Outback" in most other markets. Compared to the existing Legacy wagon, the "Outback" variant added partial protective plastic side body cladding for off-road conditions, used a raised roof, and would later raise the suspension to provide additional ground clearance. It was introduced at the 1994 New York Auto Show. Aside from other small differences in trim, the Outback shares almost all of its components with the Legacy donor model.
When launched in Australia in 1996, the name "Legacy Outback" was shortened to "Outback", followed in other markets afterwards. In the United States, Subaru also retailed the Legacy SUS sedan between the 1997 and 2007 model years, with similar modifications to distinguish it from the equivalent Legacy model sedan. The Impreza Outback Sport was introduced at the 1996 New York Auto Show, but for the 1997 model year, the donor model names were dropped, and the cars were known as the "Outback" and "Outback Sport".

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-12-17
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: MY COMPLAINT IS MY HEADLIGHTS' THEY'RE CLOUDY. ON NOV. 29, 2018 THE INSTITUTE OF HIGHWAY SAFETY RELEASED A REPORT THAT SAID THAT 'MOST BASE MODEL CARS HAVE POOR-QUALITY HEADLIGHTS. MY COMPLAINT IS THE CAR MANUFACTURERS CREATED THIS PROBLEM WHEN THEY DECIDED DECADES AGO THAT PLASTIC WAS A BETTER SHIELD OVER THE HEADLIGHTS THAN GLASS. MY SUGGESTION IS TO MAKE THE CAR MANUFACTURERS GO BACK TO INSTALLING GLASS OVER THEIR HEADLIGHTS OR U.S. DRIVERS ARE ALWAYS GOING TO HAVE CLOUDY HEADLIGHTS. EVEN WHEN WE BUFF THEM OUT AND MAKE THEM SHINE AGAIN, IT ONLY LAST 6 OR 7 YEARS. THIS IS RIDICULOUS AND THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION SHOULD CHANGE THIS FLAW IN AUTO MANUFACTURING BY MAKING IT A LAW TO USE GLASS WHEN THEY BUILD THEIR HEADLIGHTS IN THE FUTURE.

Note: On December 18, 2015 Subaru informed NHTSA of an expansion of this recall to include certain model year 2003-2004 Subaru Baja, 2003-2008 Subaru Legacy and 2003-2008 Subaru Outback vehicles.
- Manufacturer: Subaru of America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain model year 2003-2004 Legacy and Outback vehicles, and 2003-2005 Baja vehicles sold, or ever registered, in geographic locations associated with high absolute humidity. Specifically, vehicles sold, or ever registered, in Puerto Rico, Hawaii, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, Saipan, American Samoa, Florida and adjacent counties in southern Georgia, as well as the coastal areas of Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. This is such a fun car to drive! It has plenty of power and handles the road like a dream. Even my wife notices how much I enjoy driving the suby more than my own Acura MDX (which cost me almost $18,000 more). The build quality is excellent, making it a truly solid car overall.

No major mechanical problems. Routine stuff like brake calipers and pads but nothing major. Still is rock solid, lots of power (V6), great in the snow, slush and rain and fun to drive. Presently have Goodyear Assurance TripleTred tires and I highly recommend them for this car. All in all, I still love the car.

Hi there! I just wanted to share that I recently bought a brand new Subaru on an impulse, after having driven Ford products for my entire adult life. I was really drawn to its sleek design and sporty appearance, and I was especially interested in trying out an AWD vehicle. So far, I'm really impressed with the ride and handling! I'm hoping that this vehicle will continue to perform as well as I expect from a Subaru.

I have owned several Subarus, including an Impreza 2.5, but I recently upgraded to the Outback. While I initially enjoyed the car, I began to notice some issues such as wind noise, faded paint, and a faulty windshield wiper heater. Despite my concerns, the dealers were unable to identify the problem. However, I am confident in my assessment of the situation and believe that these issues are a result of poor design choices. As a Subaru enthusiast, I hope to see improvements in future models.

This car has been amazing for me! I've driven almost 100,000 miles and it's still running strong at 122,000 miles. I've only had a few issues with the door/window moldings, which caused some wind noise, but the dealer replaced two of them for free even after the warranty ran out (thank you, Subaru!). There's one more that needs fixing, but it's not a big deal. The transmission sometimes

It started off as a beautiful relationship, but unfortunately, the honeymoon ended quickly. First, the air conditioner dropped to about 10% output, then the brakes needed a complete remake - rotors, pads, fluid - all went bad. Then the radio stopped working, and now, after only 40K, the head gasket is leaking. This is a known problem, and there have been many recalls. However, when I contacted Subaru, they took the position of 'it's 1yr out of warranty.' I agreed, but anyone who knows anything about cars knows that a 40K engine should never have a HG failure. Subaru makes terrible head gaskets - look it up online before you buy one. Please note that many more HGs have failed than have been written about! Thank you for your understanding.

At 60K miles, the engine developed a bad knock. We were initially told that this was normal, but as it got worse, we had an oil analysis done. The results indicated that there was a lot of aluminum in the oil. After endless discussions with Subaru, they finally agreed to replace the engine. The old engine had two very bad pistons and would have failed soon. In addition to this, we have experienced many electrical problems and oil leaks at the cam seals. The alarm system was also on, and my remote battery died, leaving me unable to start the car until I got a new battery. We have had a lot of issues with this car, which is a shame because we were Subaru fans and drove our last one almost 200K miles. Unfortunately, this one has been a nightmare of epic proportions. We hope that Subaru will take note of these issues and work to improve their quality control. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

The decision to purchase this car was mine, as my wife required a fast and spacious vehicle for her daily commute. While SUVs were not an option, we have come to realize that this car does not meet our needs. The excessive wind noise is a major issue, making it difficult to enjoy a peaceful ride. We are currently considering trading in our Subaru before it loses too much value.

My wife was convinced to buy this car. We were looking for a safe and affordable wagon, but unfortunately, we don't think Subaru is the best option. The exterior design is not to our liking, and there is a lot of wind noise that makes it difficult to hear people talking. Additionally, the acceleration is not very smooth. Overall, we wouldn't recommend this car.

I am extremely confident in stating that my experience with van Bortel, Victor NY has been less than satisfactory. Despite regular maintenance and upkeep, my second Subaru, a legacy Outback, has required over $4k worth of repairs after just 83,000 miles. To add insult to injury, the dealer offered me a mere $800 trade-in value, despite the fact that Edmunds lists rough condition as worth about $4k in trade-in. Although I had purchased the car from van Bortel, I am disappointed with their lack of customer service. Regrettably, I will not be purchasing a Subaru again, despite my initial interest in the brand.
