2017 Ford Transit connect problems

ford logo

The Ford Transit Connect is a compact panel van sold by Ford since 2002. Developed by Ford of Europe, the model line replaced sedan-based vans (Ford Escort and Ford Courier vans) with a dedicated commercial vehicle platform. The model line is the second-smallest vehicle of the Ford Transit range, slotted between the Ford Transit Courier LAV and the Ford Transit Custom LCV/MPV. In line with other Ford Transit variants, passenger-oriented models (in Europe) are marketed as the Ford Tourneo Connect with side windows and rear seats.

The first and second-generation Transit Connect has been imported to North America from the 2010 model year. To circumvent the 25% "chicken tax" on imported light trucks, all examples have been imported as passenger vans, with cargo vans converted to the intended configuration after their importation. In the region, the Transit Connect does not have a direct predecessor; the closest vehicle to its size was the standard-length Ford Aerostar cargo van, which ceased production in 1997.

The first-generation Transit Connect was assembled by Ford Otosan (Kocaeli, Turkey) along with Ford Romania (Craiova, Romania). For the second generation, Ford of Europe shifted production to its Ford Valencia Body and Assembly facility (Almussafes, Valencia, Spain). For 2022, a third generation of the Tourneo Connect was released; based on the Volkswagen Caddy, the model line is assembled by Volkswagen in Poland.

Common 2017 Ford Transit connect problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Ford Transit Connect 2017, several common problems have been reported:

  • Engine Failure: Some owners have complained about engine failure while driving, excessive vibrations, erratic gauge readings, and an illuminated check engine light. These issues have been linked to a faulty throttle body, which may require replacement costing between $100 and $900 plus labor costs.
  • Rolling Away in Park Mode: Early in 2021, Ford issued a recall for over 192,000 2013-2021 Transit Connects due to a high probability of rolling away when in park mode. This was caused by a faulty connection between the shifter cable and transmission, increasing the risk of a crash. Ford announced that the faulty part would be replaced free of charge to address this safety concern.
  • Electrical Problems: Electrical issues have been reported, leading to failures or malfunctions in various components like lights, radio, and climate control system. Symptoms include dead battery, flickering headlights, and intermittent power loss. These problems can be caused by faulty wiring, blown fuses, or a malfunctioning alternator. It is essential to have a qualified mechanic diagnose and repair electrical issues promptly.
  • Braking Problems: Braking issues have been noted, resulting in decreased stopping power and increased stopping distance. Symptoms include a soft brake pedal, squeaking or grinding noises, and vibrations while braking. Causes of braking problems can include worn-out brake pads, damaged brake rotors, or a malfunctioning brake caliper. Addressing these issues promptly by consulting a qualified mechanic is crucial for safety on the road.

By addressing these common problems promptly and with the help of a qualified mechanic experienced in working with the Ford Transit Connect, owners can ensure the longevity and performance of their vehicles.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-15
  • VIN: NM0GE9G74H1
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: The brakes on my car would not release. After trying to repair we determined it was due to the abs module. Since the module has to be programed by a dealer to communicate with the ecm, I stopped and turned the car over to a Ford dealer. My car was built just outside a documented recall on the abs module. I told ford thir but they did not cover the repair. It is obvious another bad part got thru and my vehicle should be included. I wrote to the ntsb before, but never heard back. When ford replaced the abs module, I keep the bad part incase someone need to inspect the failed part.

  • Summary: While driving my 2017 Ford Transit Connect at highway speed the panoramic sun roof and attached sun shade completely separated from the vehicle flew into the air and landed in the lanes of travel the vehicle behind me was nearly struck. This is an obvious safety issue had the glass struck another vehicle it would have likely caused serious damage and or injuries. The failure could have also caused serious injuries to the passengers to the vehicle had it been a partial separation with glass entering the passenger area. The vehicle is available for inspection until 15 Nov when the repairs will be completed. The vehicle was taken to Ford approximately 18 months ago for a wind noise complaint. The service department could not replicate the wind noise. My vehicle was not included in Ford's recall of the same model for sunroof adhesive failure. This was mentioned to the service department and I was told it was fine to continue to drive the vehicle. In the attached photos you can see signs of adhesive failure with pollen along the adhesive line. The only area that did not completely separate was as short section as noted in the pictures. The vehicle has been assessed by an insurance adjuster.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-22
  • VIN: NM0GE9G77H1
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: On Friday the 22nd of April I was on the interstate and the vehicle began to slow down and make a scrubbing/grinding noise. I took the exit and by the time I reached the crossroad the vehicle would barely move. The brakes were almost completely locked. There was no warning and no diagnostic light was on. Luckily I was able to get off on the shoulder of the road so no one was in danger. The next day the dealer said my brake hoses had deteriorated but after replacing them the problem persisted. They now say the 'hydraulic control module' has failed. This module controls all the braking, sway control functions. There was a safety recall for this module earlier but they said my VIN was not listed in the recall. The dealer (Forrester's Lincoln 832 Lincoln Way East, Chambersburg, Pa 17201 717-264-4914) has ordered the replacement part. I believe that the problem may include other vehicles not included in the original recall.

Negative 2017 Ford Transit connect car reviews

  1. Clair Cassin 2024-11-20

The vehicle purchased new on September 3, 2017 was unfortunately involved in an accident. However, I can confidently say that I am glad to have moved on from it. It was the worst vehicle I have ever bought.

  2. Geovany Lynch 2024-10-04

My company has provided me with this vehicle, but I would not recommend getting the vinyl seats. Regardless of which seats you choose, if you're 5'11

  3. Jerome Adams 2024-09-23

I was thrilled when I heard that Ford was bringing the Transit to the US. It seemed like the perfect vehicle for my family and my husband's small business. However, we started experiencing some issues with the vehicle. For example, there was a small vibration when we drove it for the first mile each morning, and the headlights made it difficult to see at night. When we took it to the dealer, they were not very friendly and dismissed our concerns. Although they fixed the lights, they claimed that the vibration was all in our heads. Unfortunately, the vibration got worse and we started hearing a thumping noise when making turns. Additionally, we had problems with the mirrors not folding out when locking the door. When we brought the vehicle back to the dealer, they initially said they could fix the issues, but when we picked up the vehicle, they claimed that everything was working as it should and that we should know our own vehicle. We were frustrated with all the little problems we were experiencing, such as the plastic around the passenger seat breaking, the hole under the driver's seat catching everything that was dropped on the back passenger seat floor, the radio not turning off when closing the driver's door, the interior lights not coming on, the cracked windshield, and the constant beeping when driving in the snow. To make matters worse, the warranty had expired and the service guy at the dealership laughed when my husband brought it in. We are planning to go back to the dealer tomorrow after speaking with the Sales Manager, but we are not very hopeful.

  4. Jermain Bins 2024-08-16

I have always been a fan of Ford as an auto manufacturer, but unfortunately, my experience with the 2016 Ford Transit Connect with the 2.5L engine has been less than ideal. While the front seats are comfortable and the average MPG for fuel is decent, there are a few issues that have been a bit frustrating. For example, the vehicle turns like a tank and the towing capacity is not great. Additionally, the washer fluid capacity is only .8 gallons, which is a bit inconvenient. I have also had some trouble finding replacement wipers and air filters in my city. Finally, accessing the battery for simple repairs requires removing multiple parts and lines, which can be a bit of a hassle. While the rear seats are not adjustable or removable, they do fold flat, although they are quite thick and take up a lot of cargo room. Overall, I still have faith in Ford and hope that future models will address some of these issues.

  5. Rory Frami 2024-06-25

I purchased this vehicle new and have unfortunately experienced recurring issues with it. Despite multiple attempts to fix the problems, they persist. While the warranty has expired, I have consulted with a Ford mechanic who has provided me with a repair estimate of over $3000. I am confident in my assessment of the situation and believe that Ford should take responsibility for the ongoing issues with this vehicle.

Positive 2017 Ford Transit connect car reviews

  1. Joseph Streich 2025-01-03

The 4 wheel disk brakes are really nice, providing smooth, positive and controlled braking. They allow for the smoothest stopping I've ever experienced. The engine/transmission combination is the best I have ever driven, with snappy acceleration when needed and very smooth shifting done quietly and without notice. My vehicle is a cargo van with a trailer package, large mirrors and rear windows, but no back seats. The big front door entrance was one of the reasons I purchased it, as I am older and stiffer now. My previous vehicle was an 05 Scion, which was the easiest to enter of any car I have owned. I switched to Ford as Scion made it sleeker and lower, making it harder to enter. The Ford gets 25.9 mpg, which is acceptable to me now as gas has gone below $2.00 in my area. Although I have had one problem with my trailer package, where the warning lights tell me I have a faulty trailer light even though I'm not using a trailer, I am still very satisfied with my vehicle. I have over 40,000 miles on it and it still performs well. I haven't been back to the dealer yet as I am in Virginia and the dealer is in Rock Hill, SC. It has recently been bought up by the Sonic Distributorship so I should probably go back and try again. This time I will wet it down before I take it in. With over 60,000 miles on the vehicle, I am still enjoying it as before and the mileage has improved a little. Although the trailer hitch is still a problem, I am overall very satisfied.

  2. Keeley Durgan 2024-11-15

Features such as fold down seats are wonderful. You can fold the seats completely flat or choose to fold some down, but not others. This makes it great for hauling grandkids and car seats, as well as grandma and her walker. There is also lots of head room and leg room, and the seats are adjustable with lumbar support. Although there is some road noise, it is still a great vehicle to drive and makes it easy to haul whatever you buy at rummage sales or home stores.

  3. Cory Labadie 2024-11-02

I've owned this van for 5 years now and it has been a great ride. Recently, it was in a dealership for the first time due to a 'shift cable bushing' recall replacement, which only took them 30 minutes. Although I have 3 vehicles, including a Toyota truck and a Lexus GS350, I find myself driving the van the most because it's just so much fun to drive. It's very nimble with quick steering, and although it's a 4 banger, it still boogies when you keep your foot in it. I've driven it consistently at 80-85 mph on freeways here in NorCal and it has no issues keeping up. Admittedly, it can be a bit noisy, especially since I'm about half deaf from playing in rock bands most of my life. Speaking of which, I'm still playing in rock bands at 68 years old! Overall, the van has been stellar for me and I have no real complaints. In fact, I would pay big money for a turbo or supercharger if someone made one. That would be one insane ride!

We recently purchased the Transit Connect XL, LWB to use as a mobile advertising platform for our company, as well as for deliveries. As we are in the signs and printing industry, we don't require a lot of space, and this vehicle fits our needs perfectly. While the MSRP was around $24k, we were able to negotiate a great deal and purchase it for around $20k. The design of the vehicle is beautiful, except for the front grill which we find to be a bit unappealing. While the acceleration is poor and there is no stability at speeds over 60 mph, the gas mileage is fine. We believe that the price is a bit high compared to other vans on the market, such as the new and beautiful Kia Sedona, which is priced at just $26k. A friend of ours also purchased this vehicle, but the 7 passenger version, and found that the space was limited and the seats were small and uncomfortable. While the gas tank is a bit small, we only need to pump gas 2-3 times a week. We do wish that manufacturers in the US offered more options, such as the cargo divider that is available in the UK. Additionally, we would appreciate the option to purchase original accessories, rather than being forced to buy low quality third-party options. Overall, we are satisfied with our purchase, but do wish that there were more options available to us.

Hey there! If you're on the hunt for a great deal, I totally get it. It can be tough to find the perfect vehicle on a budget. Personally, it took me a whole year of searching and some serious negotiating to finally get my hands on a 2015 Transit Connect cargo mini van from a dealer. The best part? It still had the new car warranty and only had 11k miles on it! Good luck with your search!
