2012 Ford Transit connect problems

ford logo

The Ford Transit Connect is a compact panel van sold by Ford since 2002. Developed by Ford of Europe, the model line replaced sedan-based vans (Ford Escort and Ford Courier vans) with a dedicated commercial vehicle platform. The model line is the second-smallest vehicle of the Ford Transit range, slotted between the Ford Transit Courier LAV and the Ford Transit Custom LCV/MPV. In line with other Ford Transit variants, passenger-oriented models (in Europe) are marketed as the Ford Tourneo Connect with side windows and rear seats.

The first and second-generation Transit Connect has been imported to North America from the 2010 model year. To circumvent the 25% "chicken tax" on imported light trucks, all examples have been imported as passenger vans, with cargo vans converted to the intended configuration after their importation. In the region, the Transit Connect does not have a direct predecessor; the closest vehicle to its size was the standard-length Ford Aerostar cargo van, which ceased production in 1997.

The first-generation Transit Connect was assembled by Ford Otosan (Kocaeli, Turkey) along with Ford Romania (Craiova, Romania). For the second generation, Ford of Europe shifted production to its Ford Valencia Body and Assembly facility (Almussafes, Valencia, Spain). For 2022, a third generation of the Tourneo Connect was released; based on the Volkswagen Caddy, the model line is assembled by Volkswagen in Poland.

Common 2012 Ford Transit connect problems

The 2012 Ford Transit Connect is known for several common problems, primarily transmission issues that can lead to transmission failure.

Another common problem with the 2012 Ford Transit Connect is engine failure, which has been reported in some 2016 redesigns. The engine can die while driving, and owners have reported excessive vibration, erratic gauge readings, and an illuminated check engine light. This issue is often caused by a faulty throttle body, which can cost between $100 and $900 to replace, plus labor costs.

Furthermore, the 2012 Ford Transit Connect has been subject to recalls due to transmission issues that can cause the van to roll away when in park mode. This recall affects over 192,000 2013-2021 Transit Connects, and Ford has announced that it will replace the faulty part free of charge.

Lastly, the 2012 Ford Transit Connect can experience issues with the cooling fans, which can cause the engine to overheat and the temperature gauge to read high. This issue can be caused by a faulty connection between the shifter cable and transmission, and it is recommended to check the fuses, module, and coolant temp head (CHT) sensor to diagnose and fix the problem.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-15
  • VIN: NM0LS7BN8CT
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: 1. The heat shielding around the exhaust system failed to protect the fuel tank from exhaust heat. Heat from the exhaust system melted holes in the fuel tank, causing fuel to leak from the tank. The parts are at the Ford dealer with the vehicle. 2. The fuel tank developed leaks when it melted, causing a risk of fire or explosion. 3. The dealer confirmed that the fuel tank melted and leaked due to heat from the exhaust system. In diagnosing the issue, they refilled the fuel tank and it continued to leak. 4. To my knowledge, the vehicle or components have not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or others. My insurance chose not to be involved since it does not fall under "comprehensive" coverage, as there was no theft, vandalism, storm, or animal damage. 5. The vehicle waring lamps did not indicate the melting of the fuel tank or the leak. I was not aware that there was damage to the fuel tank or a fuel leak at the time. The vehicle simply ceased to run and would not start. I was towed to a Ford dealership. A week later the dealership called to inform me that they had added fuel to the tank to diagnose the starting issue, but were still unable to start, and wanted to replace the fuel pump. I explained that the tank had been filled only about 80 miles before, so there was some issue. Another week later, the dealer informed me that when replacing the fuel pump they had found that the tank had been melted. This was when I was first aware of the issue with the fuel tank.

Negative 2012 Ford Transit connect car reviews

  1. Curtis Blanda 2024-11-13

This vehicle has had a lot of repairs over the years, including engine and transmission replacements, multiple replacements of belts, hoses, bearings, alternators, power steering pumps, and brake components, as well as various other repairs. Unfortunately, the rear axle spindles were welded on crooked at the manufacturing plant. Despite all of these repairs, the vehicle has reached 261k miles and is still running. However, it is likely that the next repair needed will be its last. While I have owned many different types of vehicles, this one is not one of my favorites.

  2. Duncan Reinger 2024-11-06

Hi there! I understand that you've had some trouble with your car. It sounds like you've had to replace the transmission and motor, which can be frustrating. I hope you don't mind me asking, but have you considered taking your car to a trusted mechanic for regular check-ups? It might help prevent future issues. Best of luck with your car!

  3. Afton Schmitt 2024-10-23

I drive this vehicle for a company for more than 10 hours a day. When I took over the vehicle from another driver, we used to joke about how many fender benders and hits the old driver had in this vehicle. He always said it's hard to see, and unfortunately, I have to agree. Despite having a spotless driving record prior to taking this vehicle, I have had more near misses in this vehicle. Recently, a woman sideswiped me as I merged into her lane, and I just didn't see her because she was in the huge blind spot over my left shoulder. As a professional driver, I always signal, look, and then proceed, but sometimes it's just not enough. The parts department at Ford can be a bit of a challenge, as they don't always carry the parts for the Transit Connects, despite there being so many of them on the road. Additionally, the parts can be quite expensive, which can be frustrating.

  4. Derek Buckridge 2024-10-03

I really like the design of these cars, although the ride quality could use some improvement. The engine is capable, although it takes quite a while to get up to freeway speed. With the air conditioning on, it really saps the power too. I have been dropping it out of overdrive to gain more power with the A/C on. The transmission seems quite capable and makes up for some of the engine's deficiency. After driving the TC for 5 months, I have come to dislike the suspension qualities. Every tar strip and bump is felt. It smooths out a little at freeway speeds, but at slower speeds, there are noticeable rattles and squeals. I think Ford could benefit from using Bilstein shocks for some suspension refinement.

  5. Cody Wyman 2024-09-26

I've had my transit for 4yrs. In that time, I've had to replace the transmission, the motor, the water pump twice, the muffler, and now the transmission has gone out again. There are a few other minor things that don't work, like the electric locks and it tends to overheat. I thought I had just bought a lemon, but after reading other reviews, I think they're all lemons. I highly recommend that you don't buy this piece of junk, or you'll be sorry. Trust me on this one!

Positive 2012 Ford Transit connect car reviews

  1. Weldon Yost 2024-11-14

We absolutely loved our 1999 Windstar, but after driving it for 400,000 miles, it was time to let it go. The Transit Connect was the perfect replacement for us since it fits perfectly in our garage. We've put over 80,000 miles on it and, apart from the usual wear and tear (tires, brakes, and oil), we've only had a few minor issues. One of these was with the tpm system, which works fine until we rotate the tires. When the rear tires are switched to the front, the light comes on and the system needs to be reset. We also had to replace the driver side window motor, which cost around $400.00 with labor (the van was out of warranty). The most noticeable issue we've had is the lack of power. It's important to remember that this van only has a Focus engine, but it's bigger and heavier. It's great for driving around town and at speeds up to 60 mph, which is what it was designed for. It's also fine on the highway, but it can be noisy and ride like a truck (which it really is) and struggles with long uphill grades. Despite these minor issues, we've driven our van all over the country and we're happy with it so far.

Great multi purpose vehicle! It's perfect for the streets of Boston and parks like a sub compact car. I'm so happy with its handling, I was expecting worse. I've even had 5 200 lbs. men on a half hour drive without any complaints. I'm soon to go on a 1500 mile golf trip with 3 men and I can't wait!

This car has been amazing for transporting shipments quickly and efficiently. It has always performed any task we needed it to, while also being fuel efficient.

You've put 7000 miles in less than a month! That's impressive. The ride is decent, and the mileage and handling are good. So far, the reliability has been great. However, the radio and wheels dumped after one week, which is a shame. It would be nice to have upgrades on interior options, bigger wheels, and mirrors as useful options. Overall, it's a great first attempt, and with some fine-tuning of the details and the options needed to bring it up to full potential, it could be even better!

This wagon not only holds the grandkids, but all of their toys too. We even built a box in the back to hold camping and travel gear. Plus, we can fold down the rear seats and set up an air mattress for unscheduled sleepovers!
