2012 Ford Transit connect problems

The Ford Transit Connect is a compact panel van sold by Ford since 2002. Developed by Ford of Europe, the model line replaced sedan-based vans (Ford Escort and Ford Courier vans) with a dedicated commercial vehicle platform. The model line is the second-smallest vehicle of the Ford Transit range, slotted between the Ford Transit Courier LAV and the Ford Transit Custom LCV/MPV. In line with other Ford Transit variants, passenger-oriented models (in Europe) are marketed as the Ford Tourneo Connect with side windows and rear seats.
The first and second-generation Transit Connect has been imported to North America from the 2010 model year. To circumvent the 25% "chicken tax" on imported light trucks, all examples have been imported as passenger vans, with cargo vans converted to the intended configuration after their importation. In the region, the Transit Connect does not have a direct predecessor; the closest vehicle to its size was the standard-length Ford Aerostar cargo van, which ceased production in 1997.
The first-generation Transit Connect was assembled by Ford Otosan (Kocaeli, Turkey) along with Ford Romania (Craiova, Romania). For the second generation, Ford of Europe shifted production to its Ford Valencia Body and Assembly facility (Almussafes, Valencia, Spain). For 2022, a third generation of the Tourneo Connect was released; based on the Volkswagen Caddy, the model line is assembled by Volkswagen in Poland.

Common 2012 Ford Transit connect problems
The 2012 Ford Transit Connect is known for several common problems, primarily transmission issues that can lead to transmission failure.
Another common problem with the 2012 Ford Transit Connect is engine failure, which has been reported in some 2016 redesigns. The engine can die while driving, and owners have reported excessive vibration, erratic gauge readings, and an illuminated check engine light. This issue is often caused by a faulty throttle body, which can cost between $100 and $900 to replace, plus labor costs.
Furthermore, the 2012 Ford Transit Connect has been subject to recalls due to transmission issues that can cause the van to roll away when in park mode. This recall affects over 192,000 2013-2021 Transit Connects, and Ford has announced that it will replace the faulty part free of charge.
Lastly, the 2012 Ford Transit Connect can experience issues with the cooling fans, which can cause the engine to overheat and the temperature gauge to read high. This issue can be caused by a faulty connection between the shifter cable and transmission, and it is recommended to check the fuses, module, and coolant temp head (CHT) sensor to diagnose and fix the problem.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-15
- VIN: NM0LS7BN8CT
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: 1. The heat shielding around the exhaust system failed to protect the fuel tank from exhaust heat. Heat from the exhaust system melted holes in the fuel tank, causing fuel to leak from the tank. The parts are at the Ford dealer with the vehicle. 2. The fuel tank developed leaks when it melted, causing a risk of fire or explosion. 3. The dealer confirmed that the fuel tank melted and leaked due to heat from the exhaust system. In diagnosing the issue, they refilled the fuel tank and it continued to leak. 4. To my knowledge, the vehicle or components have not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or others. My insurance chose not to be involved since it does not fall under "comprehensive" coverage, as there was no theft, vandalism, storm, or animal damage. 5. The vehicle waring lamps did not indicate the melting of the fuel tank or the leak. I was not aware that there was damage to the fuel tank or a fuel leak at the time. The vehicle simply ceased to run and would not start. I was towed to a Ford dealership. A week later the dealership called to inform me that they had added fuel to the tank to diagnose the starting issue, but were still unable to start, and wanted to replace the fuel pump. I explained that the tank had been filled only about 80 miles before, so there was some issue. Another week later, the dealer informed me that when replacing the fuel pump they had found that the tank had been melted. This was when I was first aware of the issue with the fuel tank.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-12-18
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: AS YOU ARE SITTING IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT, THE PART OF THE VAN'S BODY THAT CONNECTS THE FRONT WINDOW TO THE DOOR JAM IS SO WIDE THAT IT BLOCKS YOUR (THE DRIVER'S) VIEW. THIS MAKES IT DIFFICULT AND/OR IMPOSSIBLE FOR THE DRIVER TO SEE SIGNAGE THAT'S ON A MEDIAN AND/OR ONCOMING TRAFFIC OR PEDESTRIANS. MIRRORS DO NOT SOLVE THIS PROBLEM BECAUSE THEY TELL YOU WHAT IS IN BACK OF YOU AND THE VIEW THAT IS BLOCKED IS IN FRONT OF YOU. VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-12-02
- Crash: 1
- VIN: NMOKS9BN7CT
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: ON A LONGER TRIP IN MY NEW FORD TRANSIT CONNECT, I NOTICED REFLECTIONS OF THE OUTWARD-FACING DASHBOARD AND GRILL ON THE LOWER HALF OF THE WINDSHIELD. SOMETIMES IT WAS THERE,SOMETIMES NOT. I CHECKED THE OWNERS MANUAL WHICH MENTIONED "TEMPORY SHIMMERING" WHILE THE WINDSHIELD WARMED UP. I DID NOT REALIZE UNTIL AFTER A CRASH HOW MUCH THESE REFLECTIONS INTERFERED WITH THE DRIVER'S ROAD VISIBILITY. THE REFLECTIONS COME ABOUT WHEN LIGHT SHINES ON THE WINDSHIELD FROM THE FRONT OR SIDES, BUT NOT FROM THE BACK. NOW THAT I KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON, I SEE HOW DANGEROUS SUCH WINDSHIELDS ARE, AND THE CARS SHOULD BE RECALLED AND NON-REFLECTIVE WINDSHIELDS INSTALLED. *TR

I've carried a lot of heavy items, from cases of wine, beer, soda, to computer equipment, and this vehicle has never let me down. It's truly impressive how much it can hold. Recently, I managed to transport 27 fully loaded 18-gallon totes in just one trip, and even though I was probably pushing the weight limit, it handled the load perfectly. Admittedly, when it's empty, the ride can be a bit bumpy, but when it comes to hauling cargo, this vehicle is one of the best. I've never had any mechanical issues, and the driver's seat is comfortable enough for a full day's work. I've even driven it for 10 hours straight on the interstate, and it held up well, despite some high winds. While it may not be the best option for long-distance travel, it's definitely the perfect choice for getting around town.

The radio's hands-free robot lady is not very helpful, but I hope Ford got a freebie for advertising Microsoft with the badge glued to the dash. The cabin noise on California's roads can be quite loud, but I always come prepared with earplugs. Despite this, there are many positives to this vehicle thanks to the thoughtful designers. The standard door lock-unlock sequence is very useful in crummy neighborhoods and the interior lights turn off after a few minutes if the doors are left open. The power points are always on, but the entertainment USB only powers up with the ignition, which is convenient for running the dash cam. The payload capacity of 1,600 lbs is astounding and includes both me and gas. This is more than my big pickup, which is only rated for 1,100 lbs. The vehicle does not jitter when empty or wallow when loaded to the limit, which is impressive. The Continentals tires kept picking up nails, but the Federal tires were a great alternative at half the price. The Michelin Defenders are more expensive but quieter. It's important not to replace the wheels with cheap boy-racer alloys as they may not be rated for the 1,600-pound payload. The vehicle gets 22-24 mpg combined and 25 mpg on occasion, which is impressive for a vehicle with 159,000 miles. As someone who did well in endurance racing back in the 70s, I appreciate the seats and view out front. This is the final English Ford design and it shows off its performance heritage. The designers at Limeys placed the high-level 3rd brake light only six inches from the precise center of the vehicle, but unfortunately, DOT regulations required them to cover it and install a separate brake light unit on the roof. Despite this setback, the vehicle boasts impressive features such as progressive-rate steering, low center of gravity, and antilock brakes that stop the car straight and true. The traction control light even comes on to let me know it's working to keep me safe. All controls are within easy reach, and the clear jump-in/jump-out path through the door to the driver's seat makes it perfect for long shifts with multiple stops. However, there have been a few minor issues such as a seized front brake caliper, a cracked coolant reservoir, and a few broken parts that were replaced under warranty. The wheel covers also broke frequently, but I was able to find a solution with four Chinese phonies on eBay. The car wash chain also caused some damage, but I've removed the rear wiper assemblies and rely on Rain-X. Despite these minor setbacks, the vehicle is still a great choice for anyone looking for a reliable and practical car.In busy 70-mph evening freeway traffic, I unfortunately hit a paving stone that slid off a truck. Despite Nationwide Insurance insisting it was a Fixed Object, I couldn't avoid it. Perhaps it's time to consider switching insurance, NASCAR sponsor or not. Luckily, only my steel wheels were kinked and my Michelins were affected, with no apparent suspension damage. After some windy rainstorms, a pine branch swung over an Armco and I hit it at 70. I had to replace my power driver side mirror for $450 installed, which wasn't too bad. As for the engine, it's not gutless at all. I just set Cruise before the highway rises and let it rev it right out to 6,000. The transmission and engine are smooth and reliable. My copier tech's Focus with the same motor needed a water pump at 235,000. He replaced his Focus with a Transit Connect a year after I did. If tech gurus like Connects, I take their advice. The trade-in value is astoundingly low, at only $4,000 for my spotless little runabout with 108,713 miles, maintained by the book and pothole-avoided van. Only 14% of the purchase price remains after less than five years. Mercedes claims a better resale value, but their new $40,000 Metris is Spanish like the current Connect, so who knows how far it'll fall from its current $21,000 trade-in with high miles? To be fair, many tradesman vans get driven by guys who don't own them, so that paper-towel resale value is probably justified. I would buy another, but the newer Spain-built version does not offer a high roof. The new motor is stronger, though -- drove one as a rental. If you're looking to buy, you might as well order the most doodads, even leather if you can find it. Dealer lead time for custom builds has been as high as 6 months, so you may have to take whatever is on the lot, like I did.

Hey there! So glad to hear that you found the perfect vehicle for your calibration business! It sounds like you've been on quite the journey trying out different cars. I totally get it, spending over 40 weeks on the road annually can be tough, but it sounds like you've found a real gem with your money bus (or should I say toaster, since it's red?). It's great to hear that you haven't had any problems with it at 15,000 miles and that you're loving the Bluetooth. I bet that full-length shelf you fabricated is a real game-changer too! And that side-mounted shelf unit custom from Adrian Steel sounds like a great addition. I totally agree that a stereo upgrade is a must, and it's impressive to hear that the Traction Control is working so well for you. 25-28 mpg highway is fantastic, and it's great to hear that the power is adequate and the handling/maneuverability is a dream. Removing the rear seats sounds like a breeze too! Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

My wife and I both love the outdoors, but unfortunately, my backpacking days are over. However, we found a solution to our problem by purchasing a used 2011 Connect that had been a work van. We had our mechanic service the transmission and rebuild the suspension, and now it drives wonderfully. I even installed a screened, tinted window from E-bay into the passenger side door for extra visibility and fresh air while in the 'house' portion of the camper. We added a ceiling vent/skylight with fan, LED 'house' lights in the back, and built in a fold-out twin bed with storage underneath. All of this is powered by a deep cycle, sealed, AGM battery recharged by a very low profile solar panel and regulator. It's quite nice in the back part of our mini-camper, being far more comfortable and snug than a tent. We've driven about 15,000 miles on highways out here, with no troubles. For a work vehicle, the acceleration is more than adequate and noticeably better than what I read in other reviews. Yes, in mountains with heavy loads, it's not climbing like the V8's, but it still climbs while being thrifty on gas. On flat or rolling highways, there's no problem at all. I do wish that it had brighter headlights, but it was a fleet vehicle, so I replaced them with aftermarket LED headlights from Amazon. Our dog loves it too! Overall, it's a great daily driver and a comfy and well-traveled mini-camper.

Hello! We are a commercial bakery that proudly services three closely linked towns and their eateries. Our Transit Connect has been an absolute star, performing flawlessly six days a week for two and a half years on the West Coast of Canada. We made the switch from a 3/4 Ton full-size V8 to this Transit Connect and it has been a game-changer. We carry approximately 750-900 lbs. per trip, three trips a day, and the terrain is varied but all pavement. The best part? The monthly savings in fuel pays half the truck payment! Maintenance has been minimal, with the biggest concern being a leaking door seal that was quickly replaced under warranty. As a small business owner with four decades of fleet experience in the movement of goods across Canada, including agricultural and mining heavy hauling fleets, I can confidently say that this vehicle is a gem with a tiny carbon footprint. Thank you for considering us for your bakery needs!

I drive a Ford Transit Connect as part of my job and I must say, I really like the vehicle. It handles well even at highway speeds and the interior cargo space is truly impressive. I've driven it in all weather conditions and at all times of day. However, I have noticed a safety concern with the standard side view mirrors. They seem to be inadequate for the vehicle and it would greatly benefit from the full-sized mirrors found on larger vans. Even when checking the blind spot by looking over your right shoulder, it is still possible to miss a mid-sized car in the Transit's blind spot.

I use my vehicle for commercial audio, video, and lighting work. I have owned two of them and have put high mileage on both. They have proven to be very reliable. While they may not have a lot of power, they are still capable of handling weight and I appreciate their layout. However, I do have some concerns about the remote door locks and the treatment of the back doors as if they were a trunk. It can be frustrating for those who carry inventory and tools. Unlocking the back side doors from inside the cab is not a practical feature for a commercial vehicle.

My coworker and I test-drove these vehicles because our company is considering purchasing two to replace our current Ford 250s. We have concerns about how this vehicle will handle in the winter season due to the low chassis. Additionally, the cargo space is limited after installing the cabins, and it can be difficult to enter through the side doors.

The wheel bearings failed at 50,000 miles. Additionally, all but one hubcap have come off, the power windows have stopped working, and the driver side door does not unlock with the key fob. The fuel tank is small, requiring me to fill up every other day. The ride is also quite loud, making it difficult to use the Bluetooth. Despite these issues, I am fortunate to have this car for free. However, if I had purchased it myself, I would be dissatisfied.

The transmission failed 61800 and 1 month past the warranty date. Despite our careful use of the vehicle, the issue appears to be a common one with Ford Transits. Unfortunately, we did not receive any satisfactory response from Ford. It is advisable to consider this issue before purchasing such vehicles.
