1999 Isuzu Vehicross problems

isuzu logo

The Isuzu VehiCROSS is a compact SUV from Isuzu. Produced from 1997 through 2001 (Japanese market 1997–1999; US market 1999–2001), it shares many of its components with the Trooper, including both its 3.2 L and 3.5 L V6 engine that produces 215 bhp (160 kW; 218 PS) at 5400 rpm and 230 lb⋅ft (312 N⋅m) of torque at 3000 rpm. The vehicle also features the Torque on Demand (TOD) 4-wheel-drive system produced by BorgWarner. It is a small, sporty 2-door crossover vehicle with aggressive external styling, including short overhangs, an aggressive forward stance, titanium "teeth" in the grille, a black hood-insert, and black plastic cladding over the entire lower half of the vehicle. The US VehiCROSS came equipped with 16" polished wheels in 1999 and 18" chrome wheels during the remainder of production. The Japanese version came equipped with 16" alloys with chrome center caps.

The VehiCROSS combined a computer-controlled AWD system for on-road driving and a low-gear 4WD system for off-road driving. The Japanese version offered a 2WD non TOD or 4WD TOD option. The US-only constant 4WD TOD, with 12 independent sensors for detecting wheel spin and capable of redirecting power to the wheels with the most traction, gives the VehiCROSS a high level of traction on wet and icy roads. It also has a high level of performance for its height. While possessing on-road nimbleness, its body-on-frame truck construction, suspension and 4WD gearing make it very capable off-road.

Sales were intentionally limited, with only 5,958 vehicles being produced between 1997 and 2001; 1,805 were produced for the domestic Japanese market and the remaining 4,153 sold in the United States. It appears that Isuzu revisited a limited production approach they used in the mid-1960s with the dramatic 117 Coupe and the later Isuzu Piazza to produce an exclusive two door vehicle. Japanese sales were limited by the fact that the exterior width dimensions were not in compliance with Japanese Government dimension regulations, and the engine displacement obligated Japanese drivers for higher levels of annual road tax. The vehicle had a base price of $28,900.

Common 1999 Isuzu Vehicross problems

The Isuzu VehiCROSS, produced from 1999 to 2001, has gained a reputation for its distinctive styling and off-road capabilities. However, like any vehicle, it's not immune to mechanical issues. Here are some common problems reported by owners of the 1999 Isuzu VehiCROSS, based on complaints and discussions found on various forums and websites:

  1. Engine Problems: Some 1999 Isuzu VehiCROSS owners have reported issues with the engine stalling or hesitating, which can be caused by a malfunctioning idle air control valve or a clogged fuel filter. These issues can affect the vehicle's drivability and may require professional attention to diagnose and repair.
  2. Transfer Case Issues: Some owners have reported issues with the transfer case, which can cause the vehicle to jerk or vibrate when accelerating. The transfer case is responsible for distributing power to the front and rear axles, and any issues with it can affect the vehicle's performance and drivability.
  3. Full-time 4WD Problems: Some VehiCROSS owners have reported problems with the full-time 4WD system, which can be difficult to diagnose and repair. Full-time 4WD is a system that engages all four wheels continuously, and any issues with it can affect the vehicle's performance and handling.
  4. Availability of Parts: Some owners have reported difficulty in finding new body or interior parts for the VehiCROSS, as they are basically unobtainable. This can make repairs and maintenance more challenging and expensive.

It's important to note that these issues may not affect all 1999 Isuzu VehiCROSS vehicles, and that regular maintenance and prompt attention to any issues that arise can help prevent more serious problems from developing.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-02-07
  • VIN: JACCN57X4X7
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: I OWN A 1999 ISUZU VEHICROSS WITH 107,000 MILES ON IT. IT HAS NEVER GIVEN TROUBLE UNTIL NOW. I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN METICULOUS ABOUT OIL CHANGES EVERY 3,000 MILES IF NOT SOONER. I HAD AN COMPLETE OIL CHANGE 2 WEEKS AGO. YESTERDAY SAW OIL LIGHT FLICKERING AND ADDED 2 QTS OIL IMMEDIATELY. DROVE A COUPLE BLOCKS AND SAW OIL LIGHT FLICKERING AGAIN. PULLED INTO GARAGE AND THEY SAID "BONE DRY"! ADDED 3.5 QTS OIL RIGHT THEN. DROVE LESS THAN 1 MILE ONTO EXPRESSWAY ENTRY RAMP- CAR STOPPED DEAD RIGHT THERE! - I COULD EASILY HAVE BEEN KILLED BY SEMI BEARING DOWN BEHIND ME AT 55 MPH. LUCKILY I ESCAPED WITH MY LIFE BUT IT COULD HAVE HAPPENED ANYWHERE: ON THE EXPRESSWAY FOR EXAMPLE AND I WOULD TODAY BE DEAD. CAUSE: SEIZED ENGINE FROM LACK OF OIL. TWO WEEKS AFTER AN OIL CHANGE AND ONLY AN HOUR AFTER 5.5 QTS OIL HAD BEEN ADDED: BONE DRY AGAIN. I'M TOLD THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR ISUZU OWNERS AND THAT THE COMPANY DOES NOT STAND BEHIND WHAT THEY MAKE. I TOLD ISUZU ABOUT THIS PROBLEM BUT THEY REFUSE TO ASSIST ME. COST OF NEW ENGINE TO ME: $5,500! I HAVE LOAN ON THIS CAR FOR $6,600 ALREADY AND CANNOT AFFORD TO PUT IN A NEW ENGINE. THE CONSUMER IS AGAIN LEFT STRAPPED TO DEAL WITH THIS FAULT MANUFACTURING. THIS NEEDS TO BE A SAFETY RECALL. *NM

VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-01-01
  • VIN: JACCN57X2X7
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: MY PASSENGER SIDE WINDOW AND DRIVERSIDE WINDOW HAVE NEVER WORKED RIGHT. SEVERAL TRIPS TO THE DEALERSHIP AND BEING CHARGED SEVERAL TIMES THEY STILL DON'T WORK. AT WWW.VEHICROSS.INFO ALL THE OWNERS OF THIS VEHICLE HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. ISUZU IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM BUT THEIR DEALERSHIPS DO NOT SEEM TO EVER FIX THE PROBLEM NOR DO THEY HONOR IT AS A WARRANTY ISSUE. MYSELF ALONG WITH ALL THE OTHER VEHICROSS OWNERS WOULD LIKE TO SEE ACTION TOWARDS IZUSU TO RESOLVE THEIR WINDOW ISSUE. *JB

VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-09-16
  • VIN: JACCN57X5X7
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: I OWN A 1999 ISUZU VEHICROSS THAT HAS A DRIVERS WINDOW PROBLEM, I RECENTLY FOUND THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH ALL VEHICROSS YET THE DEALER CLAIMS THERE ARE NO PROBLEMS. THE COST TO FIX THE PROBLEM IS 800 DOLLARS WHICH IS NOT A GUARANTEE. *JB

VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-11-13
  • VIN: JACCN57X1X7
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: MY 1999 ISUZU VEHICROSS HAS FAULTY WINDOW REGULATORS AND TRACKS. THE PROBLEM IS GETTING WORSE. THE POWER MOTORS STRAIN TO POSITION THE WINDOWS IN THEIR "CLOSED" LOCATION. I NOW HAVE TO TAKE MY HAND OFF THE STEERING WHEEL TO ASSIST THE MOTORS IN GETTING THE WINDOWS UP. IN MY OPINION THE FAULTY POWER WINDOW HARDWARE AND DESIGN MAKES FOR A HAZARDOUS SITUATION WHILE DRIVING. I KNOW OF SEVERAL OTHERS WHO OWN THIS MAKE AND MODEL AND HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS BUT ON A MORE SEVERE SCALE REQUIRING MULTIPLE REPAIRS COSTING 100'S OF DOLLARS EACH TIME. *JB

EQUIPMENT,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-06-13
  • Components: EQUIPMENT,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: MY 1999 ISUZU VEHICROSS HAS HAD CRONIC ISSUES WITH THE WINDOWS GETTING STUCK 3/4'S WAY AND SOMETIMES 1/2 WAY. I'M SURE ISUZU KNOWS WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT WHEN I SAY THAT. ANYWAYS, THE OWNERS HERE NEED A PERMENANT REPLACMENT PART TO FIX THIS PROBLEM.

VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-07-10
  • VIN: JACCN57X3X7
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: BOTH PASSENGER AND DRIVER SIDE WINDOWS FALL OUT OF THE TRACK WHEN BEING RAISED. THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN GROWING PROGRESSIVELY WORSE. THE DRIVER SIDE ALWAYS REQUIRES ME TO GUIDE IT WITH MY FREE HAND UNTIL IT IS COMPLETELY CLOSED. THIS IS REQUIRED DAILY AS I EXIT PARKING GARAGES, DRIVE THROUGHS, ETC. I HAVE BEEN PINCHED HARD A FEW TIMES. IT IS ALSO DANGEROUS TO ATTEMPT THIS WHILE THE CAR IS MOVING AS BOTH HANDS HAVE TO COME OFF THE WHEEL. OTHERWISE, I HAVE TO STOP IN MOVING TRAFFIC TO RAISE THE WINDOW, AND THAT SEEMS EVEN MORE DANGEROUS. I FEAR THAT ONE DAY I MIGHT GET MY RIGHT HAND OR GLOVE CAUGHT IN THE WINDOW WHILE I AM DRIVING AND WILL NOT BE ABLE TO REACH THE SWITCH TO LOWER THE GLASS BECAUSE I MUST KEEP MY LEFT HAND ON THE WHEEL. I MUST DISCOURAGE MY PASSENGERS FROM PUTTING THEIR WINDOW DOWN BECAUSE I FEAR THAT THEY WILL GET INJURED IF THEY ATTEMPT TO GUIDE THE WINDOW BACK UP WITHOUT SUFFICIENT EXPERIENCE. IF THEY PUT THE WINDOW DOWN, I HAVE TO PULL OVER SOMEWHERE, EXIT THE CAR, AND ASSIST THEM FROM THE OUTSIDE TO RAISE THE WINDOW. I HAVE MET SEVERAL OTHER VEHICROSS OWNERS AND THEY ARE EXPERIENCING SIMILAR PROBLEMS. THE MANUFACTURER IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. IF THEY AGREE TO DO ANY REPAIRS, THEY LIMIT REPAIRS TO REPLACING THE PARTS WORN BY THE FAILED DESIGN OF THE WINDOW LIFT MECHANISM. WITHIN A SHORT TIME THE PROBLEM RETURNS. I BELIEVE THIS SIMPLE PROBLEM PRESENTS A CONSIDERABLE DANGER TO BOTH THE DRIVER, PASSENGERS (CHILDREN!), AND THOSE THAT SHARE THE ROAD.

  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: 1999 ISUZU VEHICROSS: WIDOW BINDING PROBLEM. OEM POWER WINDOWS BIND ON THE FACTORY WEATHER STRIPPING. THIS OCCURS OFTEN. THERE IS SO MUCH FRICTION THAT THE WINDOW DRAGS AND BECOMES STUCK. THE DOOR HAS TO BE OPENED DISSASSEMBLED TO CORRECTED. IT CAN BE FIXED BY THE DEALER AND WILL START TO OCCUR AGAIN AFTER A MONTHS USE. THE PROBLEM IS A DESIGN FLAW. *JB

  • VIN: JACCN57X0X7

THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT HAS ALWAYS BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH MY TRUCK, SINCE I BOUGHT IT WITH 32000 MILES AND NOW HAVE 77000 TWO YEARS LATER. ISUZU WILL NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM OR TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. THE WINDOW WILL FAIL WITH EVERY USE. AND IS A COMON UCCORENCE IN MANY OTHER VEHICROSSES.*AK

VISIBILITY PROBLEM

PUSHES ON WINDOW LIGHTLY WHILE ATTEMPTING TO RAISE IT UP MAY OR MAY NOT ALLOW IT TO CLOSE PROPERLY. LUBRICATE TRACKS IN WINDOW AS A TEMPORARY FIX. THE MOTOR ON THE DRIVER'S WINDOWS HAS BEEN REPLACED ONCE THAT I KNOW OF, SINCE I AM THE THIRD OWNER. THIS IS A COOMON PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE AS REPORTED THROUGH A WEB PAGE JUST FOR THIS TYPE OF CAR. THIS VEHICLE HAD A TOTAL PRODUCTION RUN IN ITS THREE YEARS OF SALE HERE IN THE US OF JUST OVER 4000 CARS. THE REPORTED FAILURE OF THIS WINDOW IS A VERY HIGH OCCURANCE WHEN COMPARED TO THAT NUMBER. IT WAS A DEFINITE DESIGEN FAILURE, AND THERE IS SOME INDICATION THAT ISUZU REPORTED IT TO THEIR DEALERS BUT TOLD THEM NOT TO INFORM THE OWNERS.*AK

A FEW MONTHS AGO THE POWER WINDOW MECHANISM ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE HAD TO BE REPLACED DUE TO A FAILURE OF THE TRACK ALIGNMENT. *AK IT COST ME $800 TO FIX. UPON COMING IN CONTACT WITH AN ORGANIZATION OF SEVERAL HUNDRED VEHICROSS ENTHUSIASTS I DISCOVERED THAT THIS TYPE OF WINDOW FAILURE IS EPIDEMIC WITH THIS MODEL CAR. AT THE MOMENT I HAVE 29,000 MILES ON THE CAR AND NOW THE PASSENGER'S SIDE WINDOW IS BEGINNING TO FAIL. I HAVE CONTACTED ISUZU BUT THEY DENY THERE IS A PROBLEM. ON THE OTHER HAND I UNDERSTAND THERE ARE OFFICIAL DOCUMENTS BY ISUZU THAT DO RECOGNIZE THIS PROBLEM. SINCE THERE WAS A LIMITED DISTRIBUTION OF THIS PARTICULAR MODEL CAR -- SOMEWHERE IN THE AREA OF 4000 PLUS OVER A FOUR YEAR PERIOD -- IT APPEARS THE WINDOW FAILURE RATE IS A HIGH PERCENTAGE OF THAT TOTAL NUMBER. I WOULD ASK THAT THE DEPARTMENT INVESTIGATE THIS PROBLEM, INCLUDING INVESTIGATION OF THE INTERNAL ISUZU DOCUMENT MENTIONED ABOVE. IF THERE IS, AS IT APPEARS, A DESIGN FLAW IN THE WINDOW MECHANISM, THEN THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF VEHICROSS OWNERS WHO HAVE IMPROPERLY BEEN CHARGED TO REPAIR IT, SOMETIMES MULTIPLE TIMES.

THE DRIVER'S WINDOW IS ALSO BEGINING TO SHOW THE SAME SYMPTOMS. ISUZU IS WELL AWARE OF THE PROBLEMS AND COMPLAINT AND THE PROBLEM IS WELL PUBLISIZED. THE VEHICROSS IS A LIMITED PRODUCTION VEHICLE(LESS THAN 5,000)BUT THE RATE OF FAILURES REPORTED IS EXTREMELY HIGH. I WOULD APPRECIATE SOME TYPE OF INVESTIGATION INTO THIS FAILURE. I HAVE NOT SPENT ANY MONEY FOR REPAIRS YET BUT MAY BE FORCED TO SPEND AS MUCH AS 3 TO $400.00 PER WINDOW BECAUSE OF, WHAT I BELEIVE, IS A FACTORY DEFECT. Negative 1999 Isuzu Vehicross car reviews

  1. Jace Waters 2024-01-28

I fell in love with the VX when I first saw it back in 2000, so when I came across one while car shopping, I knew my decision was instantly made. Now that I have been the owner of a coveted silver Isuzu VX for over a year, I have mixed feelings about her... By the way, her name is Twiggy, named after the sexy little robot from the old Buck Rogers TV show.

Positive 1999 Isuzu Vehicross car reviews

  1. Noah Smitham 2024-10-28

I love this car! It rocks!

  2. Norval Pouros 2024-09-16

My experience with cars has mostly been with sports cars, but last year I decided to purchase an Ironman after looking at several other SUVs from Dodge, Ford, Honda, and more. I absolutely love my car! It handles rainy days with ease thanks to its excellent grip, and I've never had any issues driving on ice or deep snow. The only time I had to put it in 4 low was when my car was buried under snow after a heavy overnight snowfall. I've read some reviews where people don't consider the ViaCross a true off-road car, but I find it comfortable to drive on the road, gravel, or even off-road. I haven't had any engine problems so far, and I believe that as long as I take good care of it, it will take good care of me.

  3. Ashton Kutch 2024-08-18

This SUV is perfect for those who love sports cars. It handles exceptionally well and has a unique look that some may love and others may not. Its limited production ensures that you won't see it everywhere you go. Additionally, the TOD system handles all weather conditions, including snow and rain, with ease.

  4. Arvel Boyer 2024-08-15

Hey there! I just wanted to say that this SUV is really impressive. It has such a unique look and a lot of personality. I couldn't help but notice it on the road and I'm sure others feel the same way. It's amazing to see how ISUZU has pushed the boundaries and created an SUV that stands out from the rest. Keep up the great work!

  5. Lamar Carroll 2024-04-13

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with this truck after owning it for a year. I have to say, I'm still absolutely in love with it! It's stylish, fun, and has plenty of power to get you where you need to go. Plus, it's great for carrying groceries and pets around town. The only things I would change are the rear seat accessibility and the rear door opening options. Currently, the only way to open the rear hatch is with the key, but I've heard that you can modify it by installing a solenoid that works with the other button on the remote keyless entry. I have had a few recurring issues with the windows binding and the hood insert cracking, but thankfully the engine has been running smoothly for the past 50K miles. Thanks for listening!
