Ford Transit connect problems

The Ford Transit Connect is a compact panel van sold by Ford since 2002. Developed by Ford of Europe, the model line replaced sedan-based vans (Ford Escort and Ford Courier vans) with a dedicated commercial vehicle platform. The model line is the second-smallest vehicle of the Ford Transit range, slotted between the Ford Transit Courier LAV and the Ford Transit Custom LCV/MPV. In line with other Ford Transit variants, passenger-oriented models (in Europe) are marketed as the Ford Tourneo Connect with side windows and rear seats.
The first and second-generation Transit Connect has been imported to North America from the 2010 model year. To circumvent the 25% "chicken tax" on imported light trucks, all examples have been imported as passenger vans, with cargo vans converted to the intended configuration after their importation. In the region, the Transit Connect does not have a direct predecessor; the closest vehicle to its size was the standard-length Ford Aerostar cargo van, which ceased production in 1997.
The first-generation Transit Connect was assembled by Ford Otosan (Kocaeli, Turkey) along with Ford Romania (Craiova, Romania). For the second generation, Ford of Europe shifted production to its Ford Valencia Body and Assembly facility (Almussafes, Valencia, Spain). For 2022, a third generation of the Tourneo Connect was released; based on the Volkswagen Caddy, the model line is assembled by Volkswagen in Poland.

Common Ford Transit connect problems
The Ford Transit Connect is a popular compact van that has been in production since 2002. While it is known for its reliability, there are several common problems that owners have reported.
One of the most common problems is transmission issues. The transmission is responsible for transferring power from the engine to the wheels, and any problem with it can result in reduced performance, decreased fuel economy, and even safety concerns. Symptoms of transmission problems include difficulty shifting gears, slipping gears, and abnormal noises. In some cases, a simple transmission fluid change can resolve the issue. However, if the problem is more serious, you may need to replace the transmission altogether, which can be expensive.
Another common problem is electrical issues. The vehicle's electrical system is responsible for powering various components, including the lights, radio, and climate control system. Electrical problems can result in these components failing or malfunctioning. Some common symptoms of electrical issues include a dead battery, flickering headlights, and intermittent power loss. These problems can be caused by various factors, including faulty wiring, blown fuses, and a malfunctioning alternator.
Suspension problems are also common in the Ford Transit Connect. The suspension system is responsible for providing a smooth ride and maintaining the stability of the vehicle. Suspension problems can result in a bumpy ride and poor handling. Some common symptoms of suspension problems include uneven tire wear, drifting while driving, and a noisy ride. These problems can be caused by various factors, including worn-out shock absorbers, damaged suspension components, and misaligned wheels.
Engine problems can also occur in the Ford Transit Connect. The engine is responsible for providing the vehicle with power and performance. However, engine problems can result in reduced performance and increased fuel consumption. Some common symptoms of engine problems include rough idling, decreased power, and a check engine light. These problems can be caused by various factors, including dirty air filters, faulty spark plugs, and a malfunctioning fuel pump.
Braking problems are another common issue in the Ford Transit Connect. The braking system is responsible for bringing the vehicle to a safe stop. However, braking problems can result in decreased stopping power and increased stopping distance. Some common symptoms of braking problems include a soft brake pedal, squeaking or grinding noises, and vibrations while braking. These problems can be caused by various factors, including worn-out brake pads, damaged brake rotors, and a malfunctioning brake caliper.
Finally, there have been reports of rear door opening issues in the Ford Transit Connect. Several older models have a problem with the rear doors, as many owners have reported that they can unexpectedly open while driving. This issue could be caused by faulty pins within the hinge system.
In conclusion, while the Ford Transit Connect is a reliable vehicle, it is not immune to problems. The most common issues include transmission, electrical, suspension, engine, and braking problems, which can result in reduced performance, decreased fuel economy, and safety concerns. If you notice any of these symptoms, it is important to take your vehicle to a qualified mechanic who has experience working with the Ford Transit Connect. They will be able to diagnose the issue and recommend the appropriate repair.
What year is the bad Ford Transit Connect?
Early in 2021, Ford issued a recall for over 192,000 2013-2021 Transit Connects due to their high probability of rolling away when in park mode. Aside from the 2012 redesign, some 2013-2021 Transit Connects have also been reported to have transmission issues. Image source: Ford Media Center.
What is the life expectancy of a Ford Transit Connect?
What is Ford Transit Connect lifespan? The estimated lifespan of a Ford Transit Connect is 157,000mi, before reaching the life expectancy upper limit. Fuel type is a major factor when looking into a vehicles lifespan/life expectancy.
Is the Ford Transit Connect reliable?
The Ford Transit Connect Reliability Rating is 3.0 out of 5.0, which ranks it 5th out of 21 for commercial vans. The average annual repair cost is $926 which means it has poor ownership costs.
Why did Ford discontinue the Transit Connect?
According to a press release, Ford's decision to cancel these plans is based on its "efforts to reduce global manufacturing cost and complexity, alongside decreased demand for the compact van segment." The news is hardly surprising.

Ford Transit connect 2019
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-09
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-16
- VIN: NM0LS7F23K1
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I am writing to report a serious safety concern with my 2019 Ford Transit Connect. The front right brakes are consistently gripping excessively, which generates significant heat and smoke. Despite replacing the rotor, calipers, and brake pads, the problem persists. After conducting a quick online search, I discovered that this issue appears to be common among Transit Connect owners. Some people are suggesting that it's an ABS Module issue, though I can't say definitively. This ongoing problem poses an extreme safety risk, not only due to potential driving hazards but also due to the possibility of a fire given the excessive heat being produced. I urge you to investigate this matter to ensure the safety of those who rely on this vehicle and to prevent any potential accidents or injuries related to this defect.

Ford Transit connect 2020
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-28
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-09
- VIN: NM0LS7E21L1
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: At highway speeds (55-70), light brake pressure resulted in major frontend vibration and front left caliper seized. After pulling off the road, the front left wheel rim was too hot to touch. Vibration and seized caliper could result in loss of control of vehicle while braking, especially at highway speeds. Repair shop initially replaced the caliper and overhauled the brakes. Problem was not resolved, and same symptoms recurred after less than 100 miles. Mechanic determined that Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) Module had failed. No warning lights, and no inspection by anyone but my mechanic. Replacement ABS module from Ford Dealer was installed by independent mechanic and problem is resolved. Ford Dealer reported two other ABS module replacements same week as mine and internet search identified others with same problem (ABS module failure). My vehicle is four years old and has around 40,000 miles. It seems to be a premature ABS module failure causing collateral damage (e.g. caliper) with multiple reports of same problem.
Ford Transit connect 2016
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-24
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-20
- VIN: NM0GE9F75G1
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The vehicles front driver side wheel brakes keeps receiving too much pressure causing the brake pads to stick and the wheel to get hot and to shake the steering wheel. I have had the caliper replaced twice, the flex bake hose replaced as well, replaced brake pads and rotor and after the most recent diagnosis, I was told that the issue is the HCU. Ford has had issues with this model and you can see under campaigns 16C10/16V482 where this exact issues was happening was being experienced. I believe that they failed to fix the issue when they produced the car I have and are refusing to fix it. When I first experienced the issue my rotor was smoking and the wheel was extremely hot which is an extreme hazard that ford should be made responsible for.

Ford Transit connect 2014
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-03
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-03
- VIN: NM0LS7EXXE1
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: For starters, about 2-3 days before August 6, 2024 (the day I took my van to Autozone to diagnose my check engine light) my ford transit shot a check engine light due to a "P0304 Cylinder 4 Misfire". On August 8, 2024 after dropping my van off once the mechanic opened, around 11:27 AM i received a call from the mechanic I was referred to by the dealership I bought the van from that the car was fixed and ready to go. I was also told by one of the mechanics that work at the shop that the threading on the spark plugs were stripped, these were the original spark plugs that came with the vehicle when i purchased it before the misfire happened. On August 10th after work, my transmission had failed on me and i was not able to park my car, i ended up having to let my car roll back on a hill, blocking a strangers driveway having to call a tow truck around 11pm-12am. After having to wait some time, the same mechanic i was referred to by my dealership called me a day after receiving the new transmission telling me the van was ready. Not only did they try to charge me an extra $200, but the car wouldn't even start once i paid the balance due and tried to leave, and to top it all off there was still a jerk in the transmission every time i tried to put it in drive, the job was rushed. Less than a week later, the van was displaying another check engine light related to the same misfire as before, and also a transmission failure message on my dashboard while on the highway with my dog in the back. I'm a dog trainer and need the vehicle to safely transport animals to and from north to south jersey. I have not been able to do so due to all the complications I've been encountering with the vehicle. I dropped the van off Thursday August 29th and have not received any updates from the same mechanic and it has been 5 days (today's Sept. 3rd). I understand labor day just passed but I was told by the head of the shop that they would look at it Friday Aug 30th & update me asap.

Tractor trailers stopped and let us get the vehicle to the side .If my daughter had not been behind us I’m sure one of the tractor trailers would have hit us because my brake lights didn’t come on because I never hit the brakes. The vehicle is sitting in my driveway where it was towed. No one has looked at it and it now has a check engine light on.

Vehicle year: 2020
Our family of 4 had a big Super Duty Diesel truck (to pull a 5th wheel) and a little Toyota Corolla. With a 15 year old in the house, we needed a third vehicle and we decided on a mini van. We were constantly borrowing our parents' vans. Everyone we knew was buying Toyota Highlanders as they did not want to go the mini van route, but a van is so much more practical and comfortable, especially when using the third row. Most SUVs' third rows are not really usable except for little kids. Anyway, I looked at every van out there, both new and used, but one day when getting my big truck serviced, I rode in a Transit Connect which the dealership was using as their shuttle vehicle. I was very impressed! Long story short, after considering buying a used van (probably a former rental), I started looking at used Transit Connects, but I fell in love with the 2019 models with the center screen that looks like a little iPad! I ended up working out a deal with the dealer where I traded in my Super Duty for a Transit Connect and a half-ton truck (a 2 for 1 trade since I still need a truck)! Anyway, we LOVE this little vehicle! We opted for the 6-seat version since that is mostly what we need it for and it is so much more convenient to get into the rear seats. As for the seats, there is a ton of room in this thing. The third row is very comfortable for adults...the only complaint would be that your knees sit a little bit high in the third row which could get uncomfortable on a long trip. However, you can straighten out your legs if needed due to the open middle. Some random thoughts on this purchase: Love driving this as a daily driver, almost like a little sports car! Plenty of power in the little 4 banger for daily use, but you do realize it is a 4-cylinder when you have 6 or 7 in the thing, but most of the time, I do not carry that many passengers, so I can live with it. I would not buy this for fuel economy reasons...This vehicle is really fun and zippy, and it's surprisingly spacious inside when we need it. I'm even installing a hitch receiver on the back to attach a bike rack. I'm also thinking about getting a roof rack, since ours didn't come with the factory rack or the side rails. I absolutely love the Magnetic Gray color and have received lots of compliments on it. I may even order black wheels to replace the silver factory ones. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the XLT model comes with rain sensing wipers, which is pretty cool. Additionally, the remote start through Ford Connect is a great feature. I usually install remote starts in all of the vehicles we buy, but I was having trouble finding an aftermarket one for the 2019 model. However, the dealer showed me that you can just use your phone to start it from anywhere! Finally, Apple CarPlay is awesome and I love that I can plug my iPhone into the USB port and have all sorts of apps available through the vehicle. I'll definitely update if I have any reliability or quality issues, but my first impression is that it's GREAT! I think Ford should really market these more, but I was happy to get a great deal since they don't sell a lot of them and I don't plan to trade or sell it any time soon.

Vehicle year: 2018
We recently purchased the Transit Connect XL, LWB to use as a mobile advertising platform for our company and for deliveries. As we are in the signs and printing industry, we don't require a lot of space, and this vehicle fits our needs perfectly. While we were able to negotiate the price down to $20k from the MSRP of $24k, we still feel that it is a bit overpriced for what it offers. However, we are pleased with the overall design of the vehicle, except for the front grill which we find unappealing. The acceleration is not the best, and we have noticed some instability at speeds over 60 mph. Despite these minor issues, we are happy to have a small commercial van that looks great. We have noticed that the gas tank is a bit small, and we need to refuel 2-3 times a week, but the MPG is decent. We have also noticed that the US version of this vehicle does not come with some of the features that are available in the UK, such as the space cargo divider, which we think is crucial for security reasons. Additionally, we are disappointed that there are no original accessories available, and we are forced to purchase low-quality third-party accessories. We have also heard from a friend who purchased the 7-passenger version that the space is limited, and the seats are uncomfortable with cheap quality interior. Overall, we are satisfied with our purchase, but we hope that manufacturers will offer more options and better quality accessories in the future.

Vehicle year: 2017
I am thrilled with my purchase! This van is both economical and spacious, with a well-designed and comfortable interior. The back is incredibly roomy and can hold a lot of cargo. The gas mileage is fantastic, especially for a cargo van. It looks great, and after my graphics were applied, it has generated a lot of interest and business. It's hands down my best advertisement, and I receive many compliments on how good it looks. Even after 26,000 miles, I still love it and have encountered no problems.

Vehicle year: 2012
I've carried a lot of heavy items, from cases of wine, beer, soda, to computer equipment, and this vehicle has never let me down. It's truly impressive how much it can hold. Recently, I managed to transport 27 fully loaded 18-gallon totes in just one trip, and even though I was probably pushing the weight limit, it handled the load perfectly. Admittedly, when it's empty, the ride can be a bit bumpy, but when it comes to hauling cargo, this vehicle is one of the best. I've never had any mechanical issues, and the driver's seat is comfortable enough for a full day's work. I've even driven it for 10 hours straight on the interstate, and it held up well, despite some high winds. While it may not be the best option for long-distance travel, it's definitely the perfect choice for getting around town.

Vehicle year: 2017
We shopped around for almost every SUV and VAN, and even bought a used Honda Odyssey, but quickly sold it. After doing our research, we found that no other vehicle fit our needs quite like this one. It's the best of both worlds - it rides like a luxury car, but has a larger and better capacity than a van. Every vehicle we looked at that had fold-down seats had some sort of slope or had to be removed altogether. However, this one has a perfectly flat cargo area with the seats folded down, making it perfect for dog crates. I have nothing bad to say about this vehicle. In fact, I've never liked a vehicle as much as I like this one. The price is also very reasonable compared to SUVs and vans. It's a great wagon with a great price.

This vehicle handles well at slow speeds, but it may be a bit tricky to handle at high speeds, especially when making quick lane changes. If you don't require a lot of interior space, this may not be the best vehicle for you. I personally found it difficult to make use of the extra height. The biggest issue with this vehicle is its horsepower. In order to enter the parkway at 40 mph, I have to rev the engine up to 6500 rpm in the first three gears. It's definitely not the fastest vehicle out there, especially when starting from a standstill. However, as a solo driver carrying only 300 lbs of tools and supplies, it gets the job done. I currently have 5000 miles on it, and while it hasn't improved much, it still serves its purpose.

I was initially very excited about Ford bringing this newer style of Transit to the US as it perfectly fit my needs for a work vehicle that could also double as a passenger vehicle when needed. However, over time, I experienced a number of issues with the vehicle. Unfortunately, Ford's attitude about the warranty and what it covered was phenomenally disappointing. As with many reviews I've read, the problems began when the plastic drivers seat valance completely broke off under 30,000 miles and I was told at 2 separate dealerships that Ford's warranty does not cover their poorly designed parts. This was frustrating as the part is in your way every time you enter or exit the vehicle and is bound to break. Additionally, my rubber rain guards on the sliding doors fell off at 31,000 miles, since Ford used double sided tape from a craft store to mount them. To make matters worse, my rear passenger seat got stuck down 1000 miles later due to the plastic parts used for the seat release mechanism breaking in cold weather. The replacement parts were quoted as $1500 plus labor at the dealership. I am disappointed with my experience and will not consider buying a Ford vehicle again.

I bought my van new in September 2015 and got a good deal from the dealer since it was almost a 2-year-old model. While the engine is fine, I have had some trouble with the transmission getting stuck between gears, which can be dangerous. Unfortunately, the dealership has been unable to duplicate the problem. I think the tires should be bigger since the van is quite large and the current tires tend to follow grooves and deviations in the road, especially at higher speeds. However, I do love the comfort of the driver's seat, which was my main reason for buying the van. The second and third rows are not as comfortable, and I had to purchase a car seat with a smaller base for my son since his wider one couldn't sit evenly on the middle or back row. Additionally, the second and third rows are backwards, which can be inconvenient. I think it would be better if there were two seats in the middle and three in the rear to avoid having to fold seats around and climb over them to get into the third row. Unfortunately, many of the plastic parts on the outside and interior pieces are broken, and both sliding rear doors are sometimes impossible to open or close. I have had to go to arbitration with the BBB to try to get Ford to take back the van, but the dealer is making arrangements to fix the four different body parts that are currently hanging off the van. Despite these issues, I remain hopeful that the situation will be resolved soon.

We experienced multiple issues with our van, including brake failure that caused a serious accident. Despite our efforts to address these issues with the dealer, they were not covered under warranty and we were left to deal with the consequences. As a result, we have lost confidence in the safety and reliability of this vehicle and will be seeking alternatives to Ford in the future.

My coworker and I test-drove these vehicles because our company is considering purchasing two to replace our current Ford 250s. We have concerns about how this vehicle will handle in the winter season due to the low chassis. Additionally, the cargo space is limited after installing the cabins, and it can be difficult to enter through the side doors.
