2016 Ford Transit connect problems
The Ford Transit Connect is a compact panel van sold by Ford since 2002. Developed by Ford of Europe, the model line replaced sedan-based vans (Ford Escort and Ford Courier vans) with a dedicated commercial vehicle platform. The model line is the second-smallest vehicle of the Ford Transit range, slotted between the Ford Transit Courier LAV and the Ford Transit Custom LCV/MPV. In line with other Ford Transit variants, passenger-oriented models (in Europe) are marketed as the Ford Tourneo Connect with side windows and rear seats.
The first and second-generation Transit Connect has been imported to North America from the 2010 model year. To circumvent the 25% "chicken tax" on imported light trucks, all examples have been imported as passenger vans, with cargo vans converted to the intended configuration after their importation. In the region, the Transit Connect does not have a direct predecessor; the closest vehicle to its size was the standard-length Ford Aerostar cargo van, which ceased production in 1997.
The first-generation Transit Connect was assembled by Ford Otosan (Kocaeli, Turkey) along with Ford Romania (Craiova, Romania). For the second generation, Ford of Europe shifted production to its Ford Valencia Body and Assembly facility (Almussafes, Valencia, Spain). For 2022, a third generation of the Tourneo Connect was released; based on the Volkswagen Caddy, the model line is assembled by Volkswagen in Poland.

Common 2016 Ford Transit connect problems
The Ford Transit Connect, a popular compact van used for commercial purposes, has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. These issues can affect the van's drivability, quality, and safety. Here are some of the most common problems found across the Ford Transit Connect's model years:
- Transmission Problems: Transmission issues are not uncommon for the 2012 Ford Transit Connect. Many owners of this redesign have reported instances when their vans lost power and stopped shifting gears properly. Some drivers have also reported that the parts needed to repair the transmission were on national backorder, keeping them from using their vans for a long time. Aside from the 2012 redesign, some 2013-2021 Transit Connects have also been reported to have transmission issues. Early in 2021, Ford issued a recall for over 192,000 2013-2021 Transit Connects due to their high probability of rolling away when in park mode. A faulty connection between the shifter cable and transmission could make the van appear to be in park mode even when it isn't, increasing the risk of a crash. Several issues could cause the transmission to go bad, including a failed transmission solenoid, a bad torque converter, a faulty clutch, and low transmission fluid.
- Engine Problems: There have been cases of engine failure in some 2016 Transit Connect redesigns. Most of the owners of the affected models have complained that their engine died while driving. Others reported their vans vibrating excessively and displaying erratic gauge readings along with an illuminated check engine light. Upon inspecting their vans, most owners determined that the issues were caused by a faulty throttle body. Replacing this part can cost anywhere between $100 and $900 plus labor costs. Ford issued a recall in 2021 for newer Ford Transit Connects (like the 2020 model) that have a buggy engine failsafe feature. The failsafe could cause increased temperatures and delay the engine’s cooling strategy, resulting in decreased engine power and increased risk of fire.
- Electrical Issues: The vehicle’s electrical system is responsible for powering various components, including the lights, radio, and climate control system. Electrical problems can result in these components failing or malfunctioning. Some common symptoms of electrical issues include dead battery, flickering headlights, and intermittent power loss. These problems can be caused by various factors, including faulty wiring, blown fuses, and malfunctioning alternator.
- Suspension Problems: The Ford Transit Connect’s suspension system is responsible for providing a smooth ride and maintaining the stability of the vehicle. However, suspension problems can occur over time, resulting in a bumpy ride and poor handling. Some common symptoms of suspension problems include uneven tire wear, drifting while driving, and a noisy ride. These problems can be caused by various factors, including worn-out shock absorbers, damaged suspension components, and misaligned wheels.
- Braking Problems: The Ford Transit Connect’s braking system is responsible for bringing the vehicle to a safe stop. However, braking problems can occur over time, resulting in decreased stopping power and increased stopping distance. Some common symptoms of braking problems include a soft brake pedal, squeaking or grinding noises, and vibrations while braking. These problems can be caused by various factors, including worn-out brake pads, damaged brake rotors, and a malfunctioning brake caliper.
- Rear Door Opening: Several older models have a problem with the rear doors, as many owners have reported that they can unexpectedly open while driving. This issue could be caused by faulty pins within the hinge system.
To address these problems, it is important to take your vehicle to a qualified mechanic who has experience working with the Ford Transit Connect. They will be able to diagnose the issue and recommend the appropriate repair. Regular maintenance and inspections can also help prevent these problems from occurring in the first place.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-18
- VIN: NM0GE9G70G1
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: While driving on the highway, the Panoramic Roof Window started lifting up along the leading edge of the glass panel. I was to slow down and get off the highway before the panel came completely out of the recessed window frame. Ford has told me that my VIN shows the recall repair on the roof was performed already by Ford for a previous owner. A local Ford dealership looked into redoing the repair under a replacement warrenty, but was told it is not covered because the recall work was down more than 2 years ago. This seems a problem to me. The panoramic window is a fixed glass pane. Recall repair for this should last for the life of the car, not two years. I beleive the repair of the window does not actually solve the documented recall problem effectively.

- VIN: NM0GS9F79G1
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: Recall Issue with Vehicle Door Latch and Delays in Repair - NHTSA Recall Number 21V376 To whom it may concern, I am writing to report a significant safety concern regarding my vehicle. Specifically, the driver's door latch is malfunctioning and no longer securely locks the door, rendering the vehicle undriveable. This issue directly aligns with the advanced recall notice identified as NHTSA Recall Number21V376 and Manufacturer Recall Number 21S24. To seek a resolution, I reached out to local Ford dealerships, but initially faced challenges in even having a conversation about potential recalls. Fortunately, Future Ford of Roseville accepted to inspect my vehicle and I delivered it to their facility on August 23rd, 2023. One of their service managers indicated that they should be able to address the problem, especially since my car exhibits the symptoms detailed in the recall notice. However, it's September 1st now, and my vehicle remains in their possession with little to no updates. The only communication I received was a work order summary. Troublingly, this document states: "FORD DECLINED AUTHORIZATION TO REPAIR AT THIS TIME" regarding the advanced recall. Attempts to discuss this update with the service manager, [XXX] , have been unproductive. She briefly left a voicemail without pertinent details and despite promising a follow-up call, failed to do so. Furthermore, I reached out to Ford corporate for clarity but to no avail. I've consistently received vague answers, with most indicating a lack of direction from Ford. This is both alarming and frustrating. I am at a loss as to why the dealership can't take an interim measure, such as replacing the defective door latch—which has been acknowledged to degrade over time—to temporarily remedy the situation. This could serve as a temporary solution until an official fix is determined. Attached is the aforementioned work order summary for your reference. I urge you to consider the safety implications of INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-21
- VIN: NM0KE6FX7G1
- Components: WHEELS
- Summary: Van was taken to Mooresville Ford for routine maintenance. When picking up the van the service mng informed me that some of the lug nuts are "swollen" and the tire iron supplied with the vehicle will no longer fit on the lug nut. I will not be able to change a flat tire until they are are replaced. I have both a premium extended warranty and platinum service contract but the dealer would not cover the lug nuts and if I wanted to pay out of pocket they would be replaced with the same lug nuts that would eventual become "swollen" again. I was advised to buy aftermarket lug nuts and put them on. It's pretty clear after doing a little research that this is a common problem that should result in a recall and replacement of the lug nut to avoid leaving car owners stranded in remote locations or anywhere for that matter. Also the tire rotation portion of the service which is part of the service contract was not able to be done due to the swollen lug nut. We were told that the lug nuts will be damaged when they attempt to remove them and won't be able to put them back on. I don't understand why Ford doesn't fix this problem but they won't until they are forced too. Please issue a recall.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-30
- VIN: NM0LS7E71G1
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Vehicle was taken into the Fleet Division of Joe Cooper Ford on or around March 30th 2023 for the Active Windshield recall. On that visit, they were notified that the windshield had already been replaced by Safelite on March 18th 2021 due to a crack that compromised the windshield's integrity. After the vehicle being in their possession for ~13 days, they stated that all they needed was a copy of the invoice and that the recall information would be sent to Ford and the recall alert cleared. I provided a physical copy at the same time I picked it up and as of this moment the recall still has not been cleared. This is a fleet vehicle, so I am notified regularly that I still have not had this taken care of. I called Joe Cooper back on two occasions to check up on the status, with the last time being July 3rd, 2023 in which they requested I email copies of the Safelite Invoice again. Attached is the Invoice from Joe Cooper as well as the invoice from Safelite confirming full windshield replacement using an aftermarket Fuyao windshield. I cannot get an answer as to why there is a hold up so I cannot tell if this is an issue on Ford's part or the dealership. I am, however, looking to resolve this issue.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-09
- VIN: NM0LS7E70G1
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The ABS control/hydraulic unit failed over a period of months. At first I thought it was a master cylinder issue and replaced that but it did not cure the problem. My wife had an issue several times where she thought the transmission was acting up but I could not replicate it, until the brakes really started to lock up. It got to the point where the brakes would stay locked up after any application and would slowly release after five to fifteen minutes. I had the dealership look at it and explained what I had found. If you cracked the metal brake line to hose connection at the right front and left rear, the brakes would release. The dealer did not agree with me, they wanted to replace the entire base braking system. I pulled it out of the dealer and took it to an independent repair shop. The part is presently in the hands of the repair garage but has a core charge on it. The component has not been inspected by anyone. No warning lamps appeared at any time.

- Summary: Some portion of the brakes master cylinder degraded into small pieces and were found in the brake lines by a Ford Dealership technician. While traveling on highway at highway speeds (70mph), about an hour into a trip, the brakes locked on which caused vehicle to travel into the median and slide sideways. The vehicle had to be coaxed (put in manual mode), to get it off highway and limped to dealership. The technician replaced the master cylinder and noted the debris in the brake lines, therefore, he bled all the brake lines to clear the debris. There was no accident (luckily it was avoided), therefore, no insurance or police inspection. Only inspected by Ford dealership personnel. The only warning lamp that was illuminated was the tire pressure warning, since a spare tire was being used at the time.

If Ford were to advertise this vehicle, there would be many more on the road. It's truly a gem for the price. It's worth noting that people have varying opinions on the design and style, but that's what makes it unique!

Hey there! If you're on the hunt for a great deal, I totally get it. It can be tough to find the perfect vehicle on a budget. Personally, it took me about a year of searching and some stubborn negotiating to finally get my hands on a 2015 used Transit Connect Cargo Mini Van from a dealer. The best part? It still had the new car warranty and only had 11k miles on it! Good luck with your search!

Dec 2, 2022 ... Super common in NYC, but unusual as a personal vehicle in other places. Sounds like a fair price to me for the miles.

My experience differs from the other reviewers. Unfortunately, I found this vehicle to be one of the worst I've ever been in. I am using it for work and have found the ride to be terrible, the gas mileage to be poor, and the seats uncomfortable in all three rows. Additionally, the Bluetooth connection has been a nightmare and the vehicle is massively underpowered. If you are considering this vehicle for your family, I would highly recommend evaluating the Honda and Toyota minivans instead. They may be a better fit for your needs.

The service manager told me that all Ford vehicles are defective because they are built by robots. Unfortunately, after I bought it, I experienced some minor problems such as issues with the paint, wheel covers, and battery. None of these issues were fixed, and I was even told to go somewhere else to have them repaired. The battery cover even fell off during transport, and the dealer didn't do a pre-delivery inspection. I found the damage 6 miles later, and they didn't say anything about it. The brakes are also not working properly, even after 8500 miles. I was disappointed that Edmund's didn't communicate the true value of this car to consumers. They appraised it at $14,000 with 5k miles, but I paid $30k. The cruise control and engine are undersized, and the braking system is not up to par. The transmission also slips and takes too long to engage from park. Overall, I was disappointed with the quality of this vehicle. If you can find one for $14k, go for it, but otherwise, I wouldn't bother. It's a total disservice to the consumer. After compiling 500 computer files, mostly complaints, I found that our Consumer Protection agencies do not protect consumers, and the Ford Motor Company refuses to repair any defects on this new car, including a new one discovered by the NHTSA, where the side door can unlatch and cause the van to flip while driving. Unfortunately, I stopped paying for the car, and Ford repossessed it, sold it for less than half of what I paid for it, and now wants the balance from me. That will not happen. The car has had a few issues within the first year of ownership, despite being less than two years old. The throttle body had to be replaced due to a recall, and the dealership had to change out the gasket due to transmission fluid leaking, which caused shifting problems. Unfortunately, the radio is now not turning on, and it is no longer under warranty due to the car having 36k miles. While I took a chance on this Ford due to its price and interior space, I have never experienced these issues with my Japanese cars. It is disappointing that Ford is not taking responsibility for the numerous reports online regarding their radios not powering on. However, I remain confident in my decision to purchase this car and will continue to seek a resolution to this issue.

I have always been a fan of Ford as an auto manufacturer, but unfortunately, my experience with the 2016 Ford Transit Connect with the 2.5L engine has been less than ideal. While the front seats are comfortable and the average MPG for fuel is decent, there are a few issues that have been a bit frustrating. For example, the vehicle turns like a tank and the towing capacity is not great. Additionally, the washer fluid capacity is only .8 gallons, which is a bit inconvenient. I have also had some trouble finding replacement wipers and air filters in my city. Finally, accessing the battery for simple repairs requires removing multiple parts and lines, which can be a bit of a hassle. While the rear seats are not adjustable or removable, they do fold flat, although they are quite thick and take up a lot of cargo room. Overall, I still have faith in Ford and hope that future models will address some of these issues.

I completely understand the feeling of having to leave the house before dawn and the challenges that come with it. It can be quite nerve-wracking to navigate the roads with limited visibility, especially when there are joggers around. I always try to be extra cautious and drive slowly, but it can still be difficult to spot them without proper lighting. It's unfortunate that there is no way to adjust the headlights, but I try to make the best of the situation by driving in the middle of the street and keeping a lookout. Stay safe out there!
