Common 2005 Mercury Mariner problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the 2005 Mercury Mariner, several common problems have been reported. Here is a detailed list of these issues:
- Steering Column Knock/Pop Noise: Owners have reported a knocking or popping noise coming from the steering column when turning. This issue can be disruptive and may indicate a problem with the steering components or mechanisms.
- Power Steering Failure: Another common problem is power steering failure, where the power steering system stops working. This can lead to difficulty in steering the vehicle, especially at lower speeds or when parking.
- Transmission Failure: Owners have experienced transmission failures with the 2005 Mercury Mariner. Transmission issues can manifest as difficulty shifting gears, slipping gears, or complete transmission failure, impacting the vehicle's drivability.
- Blower Motor Problems: Some owners have reported issues with the blower motor in the Mercury Mariner. Problems with the blower motor can affect the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system, leading to inadequate climate control inside the vehicle.
- Cooling Pump Failure (Hybrid Models): Specifically for hybrid Mercury Mariners, cooling pump failure has been a reported issue. This can affect the cooling system of the hybrid components, potentially leading to overheating and performance issues.
These common problems with the 2005 Mercury Mariner can impact the vehicle's performance, safety, and overall driving experience. Addressing these issues promptly through professional inspection and repair is crucial to ensure the continued reliability and functionality of the vehicle.
What year should I avoid Mercury Mariner?
Some owners have reported clunky shifting and a whining noise that eventually leads to transmission failure. This is the worst issue in the Mariner and has happened to several Mercury Mariners made from 2006 to 2007.
How many miles does a Mercury Mariner last?
We had this car last us over 300,000 miles. We put it through a lot of work in a decade because we were a single-car family and made quite a few road trips in it around the country. We had to replace the transmission around 220,000 miles and did some front end work after that.

2005 Mercury Mariner recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2005 Mercury Mariner.
- Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
- Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:LEVER AND LINKAGE:FLOOR SHIFT
- Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2001-2008 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner vehicles manufactured March 31, 2001, to September 1, 2009. The affected vehicles are equipped with either a 2.3L or 3.0L engine and have had their CD4E transmission replaced with remanufactured one that was rebuilt between June 11, 2015 through July 15, 2015. These service repair part transmissions have a shift lever bolt that may not be properly tightened. As a result, the shift control lever could disengage from the transmission without warning.
- Consequence: If the shift lever disengages from the transmission, a driver may be unable to shift gear positions and the indicated shift position may not represent the gear position the vehicle is in. Should a disengagement occur while the vehicle is being driven, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, the gear selection indicator may show that the transmission is in the "PARK" position, but the vehicle transmission may not actually be in the "PARK" gear position. If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
- Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the transmissions and either tighten the manual shift lever bolt or replace the manual shift lever assembly. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on October 23, 2015. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 15S28.
- Manufacturer: Timken Company
- Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:WHEEL BEARING
- Summary: The Timken Company (Timken) is recalling certain aftermarket front wheel bearings, part number 510072, sold from January 22, 2015, to May 21, 2015, to be used as service parts on 2001-2012 Ford Escape, 2001-2011 Mazda Tribute, and 2005-2011 Mercury Mariner vehicles. The affected wheel bearings have incorrect dimensions of a 42mm bore, 76mm outer dimension, and 39mm width, instead of a 42mm bore, 78mm outer dimension and a 45mm width.
- Consequence: Use of an incorrectly sized wheel bearing can adversely affect the braking and steering of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Timken has begun notifying distributors who will offer purchasers replacement wheel bearings, free of charge. The recall began on May 21, 2015. Owners may contact Timken customer service at 1-866-984-6536.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: SEATS:FRONT ASSEMBLY:HEAD RESTRAINT
- Summary: CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITHOUT SIDE AIR CURTAINS OR MOONROOFS FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 201, "OCCUPANT PROTECTION IN INTERIOR IMPACT." DURING TESTING, THE FREE MOTION HEAD FORM REGISTERED A MEASUREMENT ABOVE THE PERMITTED LIMIT AT THE LEFT HAND A-PILLAR TRIM AREA.
- Consequence: IN THE EVENT OF A VEHICLE CRASH, PERSONAL INJURY TO OCCUPANTS MAY OCCUR.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL MAKE MODIFICATIONS TO THE ENERGY ABSORBING MATERIAL LOCATED ABOVE THE HEADLINER IN THE AFFECTED AREA FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON MAY 19, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT FORD AT 1-800-392-3673.

I recently had some serious electrical issues with my 2001 Volvo S-40 and was at the mechanics more than I was at school or work. Like most people, my time is one of my most valuable assets. However, when I saw the Mariner on a snowy day, I thought, why not? It comes with a warranty, is brand new, has affordable parts after the warranty expires, is good in the snow (supposedly), and let's not forget the rebates that helped with the negative inequity on the Volvo.

I love my Mariner! I saw it once coming out of a parking lot and I decided then, from the outside look, that it was the SUV I wanted - just the right size, not too small or too big. When I drove it, it exceeded my expectations. This vehicle has the whole package: comfort, elegance, and reliability. I was one of the first lucky ones driving around in my Mariner when they came out, and boy did I turn heads! Overall, I am extremely pleased with it.

I hope you're enjoying your car! I noticed that you mentioned not wanting to put gas in it, and feeling like there aren't enough electronic gadgets or power outlets. It can be frustrating to have to add gadgets after purchasing a car, but there are plenty of options out there to customize your ride. Let me know if you need any recommendations!
Tod Ratke 2024-10-11
Well, I'm happy to hear that you've been enjoying your Mariner for a year now! It's a great car that provides a sense of safety and security. I agree that it looks sharp and is surprisingly spacious for a smaller SUV. While the gas mileage may not be as high as you expected, I'm glad to hear that it hasn't deterred you from loving your car. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!
Isai Bogisich 2024-10-08
Drives and handles very well. Mercury did a great job on this SUV. I love that everything is within reach, so you don't have to look down to mess with any controls. That's definitely a plus for a mom.
