The Ford E-Series (also known as the Ford Econoline, Ford Econovan or Ford Club Wagon) is a range of full-size vans manufactured and marketed by the Ford Motor Company. Introduced for 1961 as the replacement of the Ford F-Series panel van, four generations of the model line have been produced. Marketed for both cargo and passenger transport configurations, the E-Series has been designed with multiple design variations for both retail and commercial sale, including vans, and commercial-grade cutaway van chassis and stripped chassis (a chassis without bodywork).

With over 8.2 million units sold since 1961, the Ford E-Series is the third-best selling van line in history (outranked only by the Ford Transit and Volkswagen Transporter). Ford retired the E-Series passenger and cargo vans after 2014, replacing them with the Ford Transit. As of current production, the E-Series remains offered exclusively in cutaway and stripped-chassis configurations. In 2021, the model line entered its 60th year of production (becoming the second current Ford line to do so).

The E-Series (cutaway/stripped chassis) is assembled by Ford at its Ohio Assembly facility (Avon Lake, Ohio), which has produced the model line since 1975. Prior to its closure, Lorain Assembly (Lorain, Ohio) assembled the model line from 1961 to 2005.

Common Ford E-250 problems

Common Problems with the Ford E-250:

  • Transmission Fluid Leaks: Transmission fluid leaks from the front of the transmission bell housing are a common problem with the Ford E-250. This issue can lead to a rough running engine and possible check engine light.
  • Exhaust Leaks: Exhaust leaks in the Ford E-250 can occur at the exhaust manifold, which is a stainless steel or cast iron casing that collects exhaust gases from the engine. The symptoms of this problem include smelling exhaust coming from the engine compartment, hearing a ticking noise when the engine is cold, and experiencing reduced engine performance. The causes of exhaust leaks include broken studs, cracked manifolds, and exposure to water or snow.
  • Blower Motor Issues: The blower motor in the Ford E-250 is responsible for pushing hot or cold air through the vents based on the car's AC settings. Common problems with the blower motor include not working at all or not working at certain speeds, which is mostly caused by a bad resistor. A blower motor that has completely failed could be caused by a wiring issue.
  • Engine Misfire: An engine misfire in the Ford E-250 occurs when there's incomplete combustion in one or more cylinders. Common symptoms of this problem include a check engine light, skipping or bucking from the engine, and the vehicle struggling to take off or shake and shutter every time it comes to a stop. The causes of an engine misfire on the Ford E-250 include worn-out or cracked spark plugs and bad coil packs.
  • Transmission Issues: Transmission problems are common in the Ford E-250, with issues such as slipping, jerking, and difficulty shifting being reported by owners. These problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including low transmission fluid levels, worn-out clutch plates, and faulty solenoids.
  • Electrical Issues: Electrical problems are also common in the Ford E-250, with issues such as flickering lights, non-functioning accessories, and intermittent electrical failures being reported by owners. These problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including faulty wiring, blown fuses, and malfunctioning relays.
  • Suspension and Steering Issues: Suspension and steering problems are also common in the Ford E-250, with issues such as excessive play in the steering, uneven tire wear, and difficulty steering being reported by owners. These problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn-out bushings, damaged tie rods, and faulty steering components.
  • Braking Issues: Brake problems are also common in the Ford E-250, with issues such as squeaking or grinding brakes, soft or spongy brake pedals, and difficulty stopping being reported by owners. These problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn-out brake pads, damaged rotors, and leaking brake lines.
  • Body and Paint Issues: Body and paint problems are also common in the Ford E-250, with issues such as rust, dents, and scratches being reported by owners. These problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including exposure to the elements, accidents, and normal wear and tear.

  • Summary: I purchased DORMAN Replacement TPMS Sensors 974-050 from ROCKAUTO for my van. Installed less than 2 years and all are bad. ROCKAUTO stated they were wholesale closeout on only offer a 30 day warranty. Contact DORMAN and they stated LIFETIME and that ROCKAUTO should not have sold out of date sensors and to contact ROCKAUTO. After several emails to ROCKAUTO they basically say sorry out of warranty. The date code on the sensors are 11326-385 they were built in 2011. They should have some kind of law for selling outdated safety equipment. I have my Shipping Packing List , one sensor that I never installed and 4 of the 5 boxes.

  • Summary: HELLO I HAVE THIS 2013 FORD E250 VAN AND ITS STOP DRIVING AND TRANSMISSION STOP WORKING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD AND THERE IS A LINK SAY ITS HAS RECALL ON SAME PROBLEM LISTED ON RECALL BUT TODAY I WENT TO FORD DEALER AND THEY LOOK AND SAY THERE IS NO RECALL ON TRANSMISSION ISSUE PLEASE READ THIS LISTED ABOUT TRANSMISSION PLEASE HELP : 2009-2016 Ford Econoline Recalled For Loss Of Motive Power Issue Ford has issued a recall for 2009-2016 Ford Econoline / E-Series models over a transmission component that could result in a motive power loss issue. The defect: affected vehicles contain a capacitive discharge weld within a coast clutch component in the transmission. A substandard weld may fatigue and fail, causing the loss of the ability to move the vehicle. All normal engine, braking, and steering functionality is unaffected. Reports indicate that the majority of weld failures occur when torque is highest, which is when the driver attempts to accelerate from a stop. The hazards: an elevated rate of loss of mobility in school bus and ambulance vehicle applications could present a unique risk to passengers or occupants including a loss of mobility in school bus applications may result in the transfer of unchaperoned children when the vehicle is immobilized in a roadway. Loss of vehicle mobility in ambulance applications may result in delay of patient treatment. Ford is unaware of any accidents resulting from this condition. Components: coast clutch capacitive discharge weld (inside transmission).

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-26
  • Date Complaint: 2022-09-27
  • VIN: 1FDNE24L46H
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: When I go to the lake boating, I always remove my battery from the engine compartment and take it with me as a backup in case my boat battery should fail. on September 26, 2022, when leaving the lake, I reinstalled the battery bas I always do and closed the hood. It appeared closed when the hood surface aligned with the side panel. After leaving the boat ramp I turned onto FM 2272 and was accelerating to the posted speed limit of 55. At 40 mph, all of a sudden, the hood flew up into the windshield shattering it from one side of the vehicle to the other. My view of the road was completely obstructed as I was covered in pieces of broken glass. Fortunately, I was able to see the white lane marker through the bottom of the windshield as there was about a 3-inch gap between the bottom of the hood and the bottom of the windshield so I could safely pull my vehicle off the roadway. I know I closed the hood before leaving the boat ramp and even if I hadn't fully closed the hood the secondary hood latch should have prevented the accident from occurring. The secondary. latch is not dependent on the release mechanism and is 100% a mechanical device requiring a person to physically push on the release lever under the hood in order to open it. Had the hood opened while I was on an interstate highway or at night the accident could have been fatal.

Ford E-250 2010
  • Date Of Incident: 2021-07-01
  • Date Complaint: 2022-01-12
  • VIN: 1FTNS2ELXAD
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: The rubber body mounts that are used between the body and chassis have deteriorated and crumbled to the point that there is nothing left but the bolt where a mount or bushing once was and this has happened within 100,000 or less on this vehicle when first noticed due to very harsh ride, body roll, popping and screeching noise from underneath van due to the rubber missing in places. This has been a constant problem with our f-250 Ford trucks as well and we do not drive the van or trucks off road and do not tow either and never drive in salt on roads in the winter so this is not due to road salt or muddy wet conditions of off roading as we are in the house cleaning business and never drive on anything other than paved or solid driveways on all jobs and do not work if bad weather is present. The bad mounts cause severe body roll, radiator damage due to bottom of radiator making contact with frame because rubber eventually fell apart and caused body to contact chassis cracking the radiator on bottom and the flexing due to instability cracked the side casing on radiator as well. This has been a safety issue for years and the new Ford trucks are still having this issue as we are dealing with this again on the new truck with less than 60,000 miles and this is the truck that we use to estimate jobs so it's basically a town truck and shouldn't be having failing body mounts. I believe during an accident the body could separate from chassis if this isn't corrected and it greatly affects the handling and ride of the vehicle when body contacts the chassis and also damages other components such as radiator. Reapirs about 2000.00 for new mounts replacement.

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-12-28
  • Date Complaint: 2021-01-09
  • VIN: 1FTNS24W68D
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: THANKFULLY I WAS DRIVING SLOWLY BETWEEN CURVES ON A STRETCH OF ROADWAY WITH A 30MPH SPEED LIMIT (ONE LANE EACH DIRECTION) WHEN I 'BLEW A SPARK PLUG'. THE COIL WAS ALSO DAMAGED I WAS TOLD. I WAS ALSO TOLD THERE'S NO GUARANTEE THAT IT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN, AND I HAVE 7 OTHER SPARK PLUGS AND COILS IN THE ENGINE, SO EXPECT IT. ALLEGEDLY 3 WERE REPLACED JUST BEFORE WE BOUGHT THIS USED IN 2016. I TRIED TO GET RECEIPTS FOR VEHICLE MAINTENANCE RECORDS, BUT THE SHOP REFUSED AND THE PRIVATE OWNER HAD MOVED AND THROWN HER PAPERWORK AWAY. THIS WAS IN MASSACHUSETTS. I HAD NO WARNING, THAT I KNOW OF. SUDDENLY THERE WAS A LOUD BANG AND A REPEATED BANG, BANG, BANG! I PULLED OVER IMMEDIATELY. (THANKFULLY IT WASN'T A 3 OR MORE LANE HIGHWAY WITH MY MOTHER IN HER WHEELCHAIR!) THE BANGING ONLY STOPPED WHEN THE ENGINE WAS OFF. I WAS UNABLE TO LOOK AT THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WITH THE VAN ON BECAUSE I WAS AFRAID OF MORE DAMAGE! IT WAS PUT ON A FLATBED AND TOWED BY AAA, TO A SHOP A FEW MILES AWAY. UNFORTUNATELY, THIS SHOP COULDN'T GET IT INSIDE TO WORK ON. A FRIEND OF MINE DID THE REPAIR IN THE PARKING LOT. ***APPARENTLY THIS IS A VERY FREQUENT PROBLEM WITH THESE FORD E250 ENGINES. THERE IS A LOT OF PEOPLE EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM. I HAD NO IDEA! IT COULD BE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS ON A MULTI LANE HIGHWAY, TRAVELING AT HIGH SPEEDS, GOING UP AND DOWN THE MOUNTAINS (I TRAVEL BETWEEN NYS & MASSACHUSETTS), IN SUBZERO TEMPERATURES ESPECIALLY WITH SOMEONE IN A WHEELCHAIR ONBOARD!*** I HAVE NO RECEIPTS. AAA OF CENTRAL NY SHOULD HAVE A RECORD OF THE TOW.

  • Summary: New England Wheels (New England) is recalling certain 2008, 2013 and 2014 Ford E-250 vehicles modified to be equipped with Ricon Wheelchair lifts. The wheelchair lift positioning input cam may fail while the lift is in use, allowing the platform to travel higher than the vehicle's floor height. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 403, "Platform Lift Systems."
  • Consequence: If the wheelchair lift platform stops above the vehicle floor, the wheelchair user can tip inwards towards the vehicle when exiting the lift, increasing their risk of injury.
  • Remedy: New England has notified owners, and Ricon dealers will replace the lift positioning input cam, free of charge. The recall began on March 18, 2019. Owners may contact Ricon customer service at 1-800-322-2884 or New England customer service at 1-978-663-9724.

  • Manufacturer: New England Wheels
  • Components: EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY
  • Summary: New England Wheels (New England) is recalling certain model year 2006-2014 Ford E-250, E-350, and 2015 Ford Transit vans equipped with certain model S2005, S2010, S5005, S5010, S5505, and S5510 wheelchair lifts by Ricon. The platform side plate of the affected wheelchair lifts may crack. Additionally, the lifts are equipped with folding link arms that may have pivot holes that are too big, allowing the bearings to move out of position.
  • Consequence: If the platform side plates crack or the platform mounting fails from out-of-position bearings, the lift platform can separate from the lift and come to rest against the vehicle's lift door. When the vehicle's doors are opened, the platform may fall onto the lift operator, increasing their risk of injury.
  • Remedy: New England will notify owners, and Ricon dealers will inspect the link arms for damage or for displaced bearings. The platform will be inspected for cracks. Any damaged parts will be replaced, free of charge. The recall began on June 29, 2016. Owners may contact New England customer service at 1-800-886-9247. New England's number for this recall is 16E-020.

The van has been okay, but unfortunately I have had two new engines from Rowe and neither were installed correctly. I am still experiencing a noise on start up and a bad front end that no one has been able to fix. Additionally, it shakes at 60 MPH despite having a new rear end. However, I must say that the dealer did take care of most of the bill, as Ford would not do a thing.

The biggest complaint I have is that the heating and air conditioning are not good at all. Additionally, the six-cylinder engine is seriously underpowered. This van doesn't go anywhere in a hurry. However, the steering and handling are good. If this vehicle had a good heater and air conditioning, and a good V8, I would rate it at an eight. Overall, I give it about a four as is.

I've been driving Ford Trucks for many years now, and I must say, they are truly unmatched in quality and durability. When you get behind the wheel of one, you can feel the strength and power it possesses. I've only had to replace my brakes once in 100,000 miles, along with the original tires. My maintenance has been minimal, just oil changes and a tune-up at 60,000 miles. In the past 6 years, I've spent less than $1000. Can you believe it? I wonder how many Dodge or Chevy owners can say the same!

Hi there! I noticed that you mentioned that all your driving is in town, which can be tough on a vehicle. However, I'm glad to hear that you've only had one issue in 8 years, and that it was covered under warranty. It sounds like the electric mirrors and rear suspension could use some improvement, but overall, you've had a great experience with your van. It's been very dependable, and you haven't had to spend much on repairs. Plus, it handles well at highway speeds and is very quiet. As a fellow GM fan, I'm happy to hear that you're impressed with this van!

If you're in the market for a reliable workhorse, a used E 250 is an excellent choice. I've owned mine for several years now and it has never let me down. Despite the odometer breaking at around 200,000 miles, it still runs like a dream. The air conditioning is still cold and the heat is hot, making it comfortable to drive in any weather. I've taken it on long road trips across the country and it has never failed me. While there is some rust on the lower quarter panels, I'm confident that I can get another 100,000 miles out of it. In comparison to my Chevy Express, the Ford feels more solid and reliable. The Chevy's transmission failed at around 160,000 miles, but the Ford is still going strong. I only need to change the oil once a year and replace the brake pads and tires as needed. It's a shame that they no longer make them. :)

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with this van. I purchased it with the intention of converting it into a camper and using it as a tow vehicle. I've found that it has plenty of room and is incredibly stable when towing. Even with 237,000 miles on the clock, the engine is still going strong and has only required expected maintenance and repairs.
