The Ford E-Series (also known as the Ford Econoline, Ford Econovan or Ford Club Wagon) is a range of full-size vans manufactured and marketed by the Ford Motor Company. Introduced for 1961 as the replacement of the Ford F-Series panel van, four generations of the model line have been produced. Marketed for both cargo and passenger transport configurations, the E-Series has been designed with multiple design variations for both retail and commercial sale, including vans, and commercial-grade cutaway van chassis and stripped chassis (a chassis without bodywork).

With over 8.2 million units sold since 1961, the Ford E-Series is the third-best selling van line in history (outranked only by the Ford Transit and Volkswagen Transporter). Ford retired the E-Series passenger and cargo vans after 2014, replacing them with the Ford Transit. As of current production, the E-Series remains offered exclusively in cutaway and stripped-chassis configurations. In 2021, the model line entered its 60th year of production (becoming the second current Ford line to do so).

The E-Series (cutaway/stripped chassis) is assembled by Ford at its Ohio Assembly facility (Avon Lake, Ohio), which has produced the model line since 1975. Prior to its closure, Lorain Assembly (Lorain, Ohio) assembled the model line from 1961 to 2005.

Common 1996 Ford E-250 problems

Based on the information provided in the sources, here are common problems with the Ford E-250 1996 based on complaints from owners:

  • Sensor Malfunctions:
    • Problems with sensors like the mass airflow sensor, crankshaft position sensor, or camshaft position sensor can cause inaccurate readings, leading to engine stalling. Regular inspection and maintenance of these sensors are crucial to prevent stalling problems.
  • Ignition System Malfunctions:
    • Issues within the ignition system, such as a malfunctioning ignition coil or spark plug, can disrupt the combustion process and result in stalling problems. Regular inspection and maintenance of these components are necessary to prevent stalling issues.
  • Air-Fuel Mixture Imbalance:
    • Disruptions in the air-fuel mixture balance, caused by issues like air intake leaks or vacuum leaks, can lead to engine stalling. Thoroughly inspecting the air intake system for leaks and addressing them promptly can help prevent stalling problems.
  • Throttle Body Issues:
    • Accumulation of carbon deposits in the throttle body can affect its performance, leading to irregular airflow and engine stalling. Regularly cleaning the throttle body is crucial to prevent stalling problems related to this component.
  • Engine Control Module (ECM) Malfunctions:
    • The ECM, which controls the vehicle's electronic systems, is essential for the engine's performance. Malfunctions or glitches in the ECM can disrupt the engine's overall performance, leading to stalling problems. Seeking guidance from automotive manuals and online repair resources can be valuable in troubleshooting ECM-related stalling issues.

These common problems with the Ford E-250 1996, as reported by owners, highlight the importance of regular maintenance and inspection to prevent stalling issues and ensure the smooth operation of the vehicle.

The Basic Difference:

The higher the number, the more weight the van can haul and the heavier duty it is. For example, in this case, the E-250 is more of a heavy-duty option than the E-150. This means that vans are all built with different parts, so they can accommodate different weights.

Negative 1996 Ford E-250 car reviews

  1. Scot Gorczany 2024-05-20

The biggest complaint I have is that the heating and air conditioning are not good at all. Additionally, the six-cylinder engine is seriously underpowered. This van doesn't go anywhere in a hurry. However, the steering and handling are good. If this vehicle had a good heater and air conditioning, and a good V8, I would rate it at an eight. Overall, I give it about a four as is.

  2. Herman Kuhlman 2024-01-28

This is an excellent vehicle for large families. It comfortably seats 12 people, so you won't have to worry about leaving anyone behind. Additionally, it has a generally good repair record.

Positive 1996 Ford E-250 car reviews

  1. Eric Haag 2024-03-09

It has a powerful 5.8 engine and great steering. It's a real workhorse!

  2. Logan Mraz 2024-01-28

You've got yourself a strong and reliable engine there! It's impressive that it has lasted for over 227,000 miles without any engine trouble. Although you had to replace the transmission, it's understandable given the heavy load you were hauling. It's great to hear that it still cranks strong even in cold weather. Based on your positive experience, it sounds like you'll be sticking with Ford vans for your work needs.
