1997 Dodge Dakota problems

dodge logo

The Dodge Dakota, known as the Ram Dakota for the final two years of production, is a mid-size pickup truck from Chrysler's Ram (formerly Dodge Truck) division. The first Dakota was introduced in late 1986 as a 1987 model. From its introduction through 2009, it was marketed under the Dodge brand, and for the final two years under the Ram brand.

The Dakota was sized above the compact Ford Ranger and Chevrolet S-10, but below the full-sized pickups such as Dodge's own Ram. It is a conventional design with body-on-frame construction and a leaf spring/live axle rear end. The Dakota was the first mid-size pickup with an optional V8 engine. For its entire production, the Dakota was built in Warren, Michigan.

The Dakota was nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award for 2000.

STEERING,SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-04-30
  • VIN: 1B7FL26XXVS
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION
  • Summary: DUE TO POOR CHOICE OF MATERIALS (I ASSUME) THE FRONT HUB AND SPINDLE ASSEMBLY WEARS. LEAVING FRONT BRAKE SLIDER PINS UNATTACHED TO CALIPER MOUNTING PLATE. WHEN THIS HAPPENS, THE FRONT CALIPER WOBBLES IN IT'S PLACE, POSSIBLY EJECTING THE SLIDEPINS BECAUSE THEY "WOBBLE" IN THE KNUCKLE HOLES DESIGNED TO RETAIN THEM. THIS CAUSES EXCESS WEAR ON THE FRONT HUB ASSEMBLY, INCREASED WEAR IN BRAKES, AND STRESS ON THE HUB BEARINGS. HAVING READ THE "ALLDATA" DATA BASE, THERE IS A REDESIGNED KNUCKLE WITH IMPROVED SLIDE PIN SUPPORTS. THERE ALSO IS A REPAIR KIT INVOLVING THE USAGE OF "HELI-COIL" INSERTS TO SECURE BRAKE PAD CARRIER TO SPINDLE ASSEMBLY. (SLIDE PINS) I FEEL TOTALLY UNSAFE WITH THIS ARRANGEMENT. I PREFER TO HAVE THE RE-DESIGNED SPINDLE ASSEMBLIES INSTALLED FOR FREE BY DEALER WITH UP-DATED PART NUMBERS. THE DEALER WANTS $1000 PER SIDE FOR THE REDESIGNED UNITS. I THINK THIS IS ABSURD. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD AND COULD CAUSE LOSS OF LIFE DUE TO LOSS OF CONTROL. THE ONLY THING HOLDING THE BRAKE ASSEMBLIES IN PLACE IS THE WHEEL, ITSELF!! *TR

THE REMAINDER OF THE TIRES REMAINED INFLATED. THE CONTACT DID NOT DRIVE OR ANY POTHOLES OR OTHER ROAD HAZARDS TO CAUSE THE FAILURE. HE TOOK THE TIRE BACK TO THE STORE FROM WHERE IT WAS PURCHASED AND WAS INFORMED THAT IT WAS DEFECTIVE. THE TIRE WAS REPLACED FOR FREE. THE TIRE SIZE, TIRE LINE, AND REMAINING TREAD DEPTH WERE UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 90,408. UPDATED 03/17/09. *LJ THE CONSUMER BELIEVED THE TIRE WAS DEFECTIVE. UPDATED 03/17/09. *JB

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-10-22
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: THE BALL JOINTS ON MY 97 DODGE DAKOTA ARE WORN OUT. APPARENTLY THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM AND SUPPOSEDLY THERE IS A RECALL IN EFFECT FOR NEWER DAKOTAS AS THOUGH THE PROBLEM DIDN'T START UNTIL AFTER 1997. THIS IS A FAULTY PART FROM THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS AND ITS REPAIR (AMONGST THE MANY OTHER MANUFACTURING FAULT REPAIRS ON THIS VEHICLE) IS RUINING ME FINANCIALLY IN THIS ECONOMY. I SHOULD NOT BE HELD FINANCIALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR A CAR MAKERS INEPT MANUFACTURING. *TR

STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-03-12
  • VIN: 1B7GG23Y7VS
  • Components: STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: THE FRONT BRAKE CALIPER BOLTS TO THE STEERING KNUCKLE ON A 1997 DODGE DAKOTA, 4WD. DUE TO THE NATURE OF THE DESIGN, THE THREADS THAT HOLD THE BRAKE CALIPER MOUNTING STUDS CAN STRIP OUT, THEREBY LEAVING THE CALIPER TO FLOAT ON THE KNUCKLE. UNDER PROLONGED USE, THESE STUDS CAN BACK OUT, LETTING THE CALIPER FALL OFF, WHICH COULD LEAD TO A CRASH. ON MY PARTICULAR VEHICLE, THIS HAS HAPPENED FOR THE THIRD TIME NOW, ONCE ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE AND TWICE ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. THE THREADS STRIP OUT, AND THE MOUNTING BOSS SECTION IS SO SMALL THAT A LARGER THREAD CANNOT BE RETAPPED WITHOUT DANGER OF BREAKING THE HOLE OUT. AUTO PARTS SUPPLIERS SELL SLIGHTLY OVERSIZE, SELF TAPPING STUDS, BUT THESE DO NOT LAST LONG. THE STEERING KNUCKLE IS A VERY PRICEY PART (ON THE ORDER OF $600 JUST FOR THE PART) AND CONTINUING REPLACEMENT IS COST PROHIBITIVE. MY VEHICLE IS APPARENTLY NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS PROBLEM, AS A SEARCH OF SALVAGE YARDS REVEALED NUMEROUS STRIPPED OUT THREADS ON VEHICLES WHERE THE STEERING KNUCKLE WAS ACTUALLY AVAILABLE. *TR

SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Components: SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: MY BALL JOINTS AND TIE RODS WERE GOING BAD AT 54,000 MILES. DODGE WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT THE PROBLEM. ALSO, MY TRANSMISSION STARTED TO GO BAD AT 74,000 MILES. 2ND GEAR WENT OUT, THEN IT WENT COMPLETELY OUT AT 91,000 MILES. OBVIOUSLY DODGE WASN'T GOING TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. I WONT BUY ANOTHER DODGE AGAIN. *TR

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-07-15
  • VIN: 1B7GL23X4VS
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: BALL JOINT FAILURES: TRUCK FAILED STATE INSPECTION DUE TO DEFECTIVE UPPER AND LOWER BALL JOINTS OR BALL JOINT AND LOWER CONTROL ARM. ANOTHER BALL JOINT HAD BEEN REPLACED THE PREVIOUS YEAR. ALL DEFECTS OCCURRED AT ABOUT 50,000 MILES. THIS IS COMMON PROBLEM WITH DODGE DAKOTA AND CHRYSLER WILL NOT PAY FOR REPAIRS. PROBLEM IS WELL DOCUMENTED ON DOZENS OF INTERNET SITES, BLOGS, ETC AND ALL MECHANICS AND STATE INSPECTORS ALL NOD KNOWINGLY ABOUT THE DODGE PICKUP. THIS IS SAFETY ISSUE AND FAILURE OF BALL JOINTS IS NOT A PROBLEM IN ALMOST ANY CAR EXCEPT CHRYSLER PRODUCTS. HOW DO THEY GET AWAY WITH THIS SAFETY ISSUE WHICH CAN CAUSE LOSS OF CONTROL AND CRASHES AND AT UNDER 50,000 MILES. IT IS TIME NHTSA FORCES DODGE TO RECALL AND REIMBURSE ALL COSTS TO THOSE ALREADY HAVING PAID FOR SUCH REPAIRS. THIS SHOULD BE APPLICABLE FOR ANY YEAR VEHICLE UP TO AT LEAST 100,000. I HAVE OWNED OVER A DOZEN VEHICLES AND MOST DRIVEN OVER 100,000 AND ONE AT 145,000 AND ONE 200,000 AND HAVE NEVER REPLACE BUT ONE BALL JOINT ON A 1970 CUTLASS. ONLY ONE HIGH MILEAGE VEHICLE WITH CV JOINTS BUT MAYBE NO BALL JOINTS HAD TO HAVE A CV JOINT REPLACED. THIS DOES NOT SPEAK WELL OF CHRYSLER/DODGE. *TR

SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-10-15
  • VIN: 1B7GL23X4VS
  • Components: SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: TRANSMISSION FAILURE AT 50,000 MILES. TRANSMISSION BEGAN TO BOG DOWN WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 40 MPH. AFTER ABOUT 5 MINUTES IT WOULD ONLY GO ABOUT 5 MPH WHILE REVING ABOUT 3500 RPM. PAID FOR TOW TO DODGE DEALER IN HAMPTON VA FOR ANALYSIS AND REPAIR. TOW OPERATOR REMARKED ALMOST ALL DODGE DAKOTAS TOWED FOR TRANNY WORK ENDED UP COSTING $2300-$2900 FOR A REPLACEMENT. I WAS LUCKY AND ONLY HAD TO REPLACE ALL PRESSURE REGULATING VALVES FOR ABOUT $670 (FUNNY HOW THEY ALL WENT BAD AT THE SAME TIME BUT I WOULD NOT ARGUE THE POINT SINCE THE PARTS WERE CHEAP COMPARED TO DOING IT OVER IN A FEW MONTHS). DEALER INDICATED THIS WAS A YEARS OLD PROBLEM WHICH WAS COMMON TO REPLACE THESE TRANSMISSIONS AND THAT MY $600 REPAIR WAS NOT GUARANTEED TO PREVENT TOTAL FAILURE. DODGE HAS NOT AGREED TO ANY RECALL TO FIX BUT SHOULD DO THIS. THEREFORE, I WILL NEVER OWN ANOTHER DODGE OR CHRYSLER OF ANY SORT. UPPER AND LOWER BALL JOINTS ALSO FAILED AT UNDER 50,000 MILES AND NO REPAIR RECALL ON THIS LONG STANDING PROBLEM AS WELL. SUBJECT ON ANOTHER COMPLAINT. *TR

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-05-27
  • VIN: 1B4GP44RXVB
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: THE ORIGINAL HEAD LIGHTS ARE WARN, DETERIORATED, AND DON'T LAMINATE DRIVING AT NIGHT, HIGH BEAMS ARE EQUAL TO ALL OTHER CARS LOW BEAMS. THE LUMIUNS DON'T GET OUT, BECAUSE OF THE DEFECTIVE LENS COVER. I WAS TOLD THAT ALL CARAVANS AROUND THE DATE OF 1997 HAVE THIS PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD THAT YOU HAVE TO REPLACE THEM AT A COST OF AROUND $200.00 EACH. THEY ARE A SAFETY ISSUE AT NIGHT, A REAL HAZARD, AND THEY ARE A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. SHOULD BE REPLACED BY CORP/ DEALER. *TR

Negative 1997 Dodge Dakota car reviews

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my truck. I bought it with 106,500 miles and have put over 126,000 miles on it. At first, I really enjoyed how smoothly the transmission switched gears. However, at 123,675 miles, I noticed the transmission started to slip and the 5.2 liter v8 engine began to knock. Unfortunately, for those who have had to take this truck to the shop, it hasn't been worth the cost. Personally, I don't plan on spending any money on this truck unless it's for gas or regular maintenance. These trucks are typically valued at around $5,000, so it's important to keep that in mind if you're considering repairs. Thanks for listening!

  2. Stan Romaguera 2024-06-18

Great design and layout! Although, it seems like the MPG could be improved and the transmission could be stronger. However, I'm glad to hear that you haven't had any major problems, just some ball joints and a new paint job.

  3. Marvin Wuckert 2024-04-19

My experience with my first new vehicle purchase, a Chrysler truck, was unfortunately not a positive one. Despite its comfortable driving and reasonable mileage, the truck proved to be a maintenance nightmare. Within a short period of time, I had to replace multiple parts including three power steering pumps, ball joints, fuel pump, cruise control, and the rear. The truck also had a tendency to wear out brakes every 15-20 thousand miles, which was quite unusual. I am grateful that I did not use it as a heavy hauler, as I am sure it would have required even more frequent repairs.

For those considering a Dodge truck, I highly recommend the 5.2 or 5.9 engine for a 4x4. My extended cab 4x4 with the 3.9 engine has been disappointing, struggling to maintain speeds over 70 in hilly areas or on long trips. However, the truck's design is stunning and the build quality is excellent, with no rattles or broken parts despite being in two accidents that totaled other vehicles while only damaging my bumper. Although I have experienced issues with the speedometer, which the dealership has been unable to resolve after three months, I am confident that this truck is a great choice for those seeking a reliable and sturdy vehicle.

  5. Adonis Spencer 2024-01-25

This American truck has a V8 engine that provides good acceleration. However, it requires frequent and expensive maintenance, and has poor fuel economy. The engine may start knocking around 60000 miles, but using premium gas can help. Additionally, my Dakota has a tire wear problem that is not related to front-end alignments. Unfortunately, it did not hold up well in a car wreck, as I rear-ended a Toyota Corolla and it cost $2700 to repair my vehicle.

As a Dodge fan, I've always dreamed of owning a truck like this, and now that I do, I couldn't be happier. I absolutely love my truck, and when I'm driving it, I feel like I'm on top of the world. I couldn't ask for more in a truck!

  2. Herminio Ferry 2024-10-02

This has been the best truck I've owned of three. The performance is wonderful, but at the price of gas mileage (15 mpg) is not so hot. It rides like a car and is both quiet and comfortable. I love this truck and I'll probably drive it till the wheels fall off!

  3. Richmond Yundt 2024-09-22

I bought my truck brand new and have been driving it for the past 6 years, covering a daily round trip of 110 miles to work. It has now clocked over 257,000 miles and still runs great, only using half a quart of oil between changes. I have only had to replace things that wear out on any truck, such as brakes, water pump, belts, and rotors. The radio did go out, but I replaced it with a nice one that has a CD player, which I was planning to do anyway. The V6 engine provides plenty of power and I get about 21 mpg no matter how I drive or what gas I use.

  4. Murray Hettinger 2024-09-19

This has been the best truck you've owned of three. The performance is wonderful, but at the price of gas, mileage isn't great (15 mpg). It rides like a car, and is both quiet and comfortable. You love this truck and you'll probably drive it till the wheels fall off!

  5. John Champlin 2024-09-10

You've had this truck for four years and you haven't had one major mechanical breakdown in all that time. With the V6 w/ a 5-speed, it gets an impressive 24mpg on the hwy and 18 in town. It has enough power to tow your Harley and also enough payload to move heavy antique furniture on more than one occasion. Plus, with the shell and bed extender, it's even better!
