2010 Dodge Dakota problems

The Dodge Dakota, known as the Ram Dakota for the final two years of production, is a mid-size pickup truck from Chrysler's Ram (formerly Dodge Truck) division. The first Dakota was introduced in late 1986 as a 1987 model. From its introduction through 2009, it was marketed under the Dodge brand, and for the final two years under the Ram brand.

The Dakota was sized above the compact Ford Ranger and Chevrolet S-10, but below the full-sized pickups such as Dodge's own Ram. It is a conventional design with body-on-frame construction and a leaf spring/live axle rear end. The Dakota was the first mid-size pickup with an optional V8 engine. For its entire production, the Dakota was built in Warren, Michigan.

The Dakota was nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award for 2000.

These issues can lead to expensive repairs and should be carefully considered before purchasing a 2010 Dodge Dakota.

Another issue that has been reported by owners of the 2010 Dodge Dakota is brake problems. These issues can include brake cylinder lockup, smoking hot brakes, and brake lockup. These problems can be dangerous and should be addressed promptly if they occur.

Negative 2010 Dodge Dakota car reviews

  1. Leo VonRueden 2024-11-24

I purchased a used 2010 Dakota 3.7 L Big Horn package in May 2019, and I have always been a fan of Dakota trucks. While the 6-cylinder engine is great for fuel economy, I have encountered a few issues. Firstly, I believe that Dodge should have equipped the truck with at least a 4.0 L engine for more power and towing capabilities. Secondly, the truck has been turning off inexplicably, which was initially attributed to the transmission overheating. However, I later discovered that the issue was with the loose ignition switch. Despite these issues, I still wish that Dodge (RAM) would bring back the Dakota. If they do, I suggest keeping the 2010 body, which is a true mid-sized truck, and offering larger 4.0 or bigger V-6 engines, as well as the Eco-Diesel in the 1500. Additionally, the cab could be reconfigured to make better use of the space. These are just a few of my suggestions.

  2. Newell Johns 2024-11-14

I bought my 08 Dakota used with around 57,000 miles and it was in great shape with plenty of service records. However, over the past two years, I have had to replace several parts including balljoints, tie rods, wheel bearings, struts, calipers, fuel pump, rear end, transmission service (still slipping) and a new motor due to a rod knock. Unfortunately, the most recent issue is the steering rack + pinion and the power steering system is going bad. Despite my efforts to maintain it, this truck has proven to be unreliable, a gas hog, and an uncomfortable ride. While I have always been a Mopar fan, this experience has led me to reconsider my options for future purchases.

  3. Isidro Schoen 2024-07-22

Replacing parts can be quite expensive, with shop labor costing $102 or more.

  4. Emmett Denesik 2024-06-28

The 2008 Dakota has been a great truck so far! The V6 has a lot of low-end torque, but it may struggle going uphill or passing if the RPMs are not high enough. I have owned both 1st and 2nd generation Dakotas, and other than some brake issues, I have never had any problems with them.

  5. Vincent Watsica 2024-05-23

The first night I owned the vehicle, I started it and noticed that the Variable Speed Fan was locked up, causing it to roar like an 18 wheeler. Additionally, there was a transmission problem where the vehicle would jolt when coming to a stop at 25 MPH. Despite multiple trips to the dealer, these issues were never resolved. Unfortunately, I had to get rid of the vehicle at 28,900 miles due to these persistent problems. It was a frustrating experience.

Positive 2010 Dodge Dakota car reviews

  1. Devan Mante 2025-01-07

Congratulations on your new 08 Dakota! It's great to hear that you're impressed with its looks, interior, and drive-ability. This truck may be smaller, but it's definitely capable. It's also great to hear that it's easy for your wife to maneuver in traffic and that the fit and finish is excellent. Plus, it's even better on gas than your old Hemi! The interior is also very quiet and the upgraded stereo is crisp and clear. I'm glad you're enjoying the Sirius radio option. It sounds like you had a bit of trouble finding room for all your gear from the Ram, but it's great that you were able to solve the issue by mounting one of the collapsible bins from the interior to the truck bed with sheet metal screws. Happy driving!

  2. Dennis Bins 2024-10-22

Hey there! I just wanted to share with you how much I love my truck. It's actually a Sport w/V-8, crew cab and this is my 3rd Dakota. So far, it's my favorite! It's red, fast, looks sporty, handles great, rides good, doors open wide, seats are firm and supportive, tows like a champ, and looks good anywhere. Plus, it has the best warranty of anyone! I traded down from a full-size Chevy and I like this one better. It's easier to get in and out of and my wife loves the size. The mileage is 21-24 on the highway when driving sensibly, and of course, it's lower in the city. The acceleration is matched by nothing else in its' class, and the brakes and transmission work flawlessly. When you turn on your truck, does it return the favor? Mine sure does!

  3. Francisco Dietrich 2024-09-08

The ride of this model is firm, but not uncomfortable, and is a noticeable improvement from previous years. The console and cup holder layout is greatly improved and all controls are easily accessible. The vehicle runs quietly and has had very few quality issues in our fleet. If you require serious power, I would recommend the V8, but my 3.7L has been able to accelerate well and maintain highway speeds. Overall, we have had a positive experience with Dakotas and are hopeful that this series will continue to improve.

  4. Garett Kemmer 2024-08-11

This truck is of high quality, however, it requires frequent repairs.

  5. Reid Torp 2024-07-25

I bought this PU as my retirement truck. It has been excellent. In the past 7 years, it is still like new and has never let me down. It just passed 23,000 miles and is still running great. I have had guys walk up and ask if I was thinking of selling it. I replaced the original tires as they were starting to check on the rim. It uses no oil between changes, which occur every 2,000 miles.
