2000 Dodge Dakota problems

dodge logo

The Dodge Dakota, known as the Ram Dakota for the final two years of production, is a mid-size pickup truck from Chrysler's Ram (formerly Dodge Truck) division. The first Dakota was introduced in late 1986 as a 1987 model. From its introduction through 2009, it was marketed under the Dodge brand, and for the final two years under the Ram brand.

The Dakota was sized above the compact Ford Ranger and Chevrolet S-10, but below the full-sized pickups such as Dodge's own Ram. It is a conventional design with body-on-frame construction and a leaf spring/live axle rear end. The Dakota was the first mid-size pickup with an optional V8 engine. For its entire production, the Dakota was built in Warren, Michigan.

The Dakota was nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award for 2000.

  • Intermediate Steering Shaft Noises: Many owners of the Dodge Dakota have reported noises coming from the intermediate steering shaft, which can be a sign of a problem with the steering system.
  • Damaged Exhaust Manifold Bolts: Some Dodge Dakota owners have experienced issues with damaged exhaust manifold bolts, which can lead to exhaust leaks and decreased engine performance.
  • Upper Ball Joint Failure: Upper ball joint failure has been reported by some Dodge Dakota owners, which can lead to steering and handling problems.
  • Brake Cylinder Lock-Up: Brake cylinder lock-up is another issue that has been reported by some Dodge Dakota owners, which can lead to decreased braking performance and safety concerns.
  • Coolant Loss and Engine Overheating: Coolant loss and engine overheating have been reported by some 2001 Dodge Dakota owners, which can lead to engine damage and decreased performance.
  • Oil Leaks: Oil leaks have been reported by some 1997 Dodge Dakota owners, with leaks typically developing around the valve cover, intake manifold, timing cover, distributor O-ring, and the rear main seal.

It is important to note that not all Dodge Dakotas will experience these issues, and many owners have reported positive experiences with the vehicle. However, it is essential to be aware of these common problems when considering purchasing a used Dodge Dakota, particularly for the model years mentioned.

Why did they stop making Dodge Dakota?

The Dodge Dakota actually existed for two years after the transition as the Ram Dakota before being finally axed without a replacement in 2011 due to dwindling sales, lack of development of anything resembling a replacement (the closest we maybe got was the 2006 Rampage concept truck), and a toughening business case.

Negative 2000 Dodge Dakota car reviews

  1. Timmothy Keeling 2024-11-26

In my experience, the Dodge Far and Away vehicle did not meet my expectations. The vehicle's depreciation rate was the highest among American vehicles, and its mileage rating was overstated by almost double. Additionally, the dealership was unable to address the poor mileage and engine issues due to manufacturer restrictions. Despite having a large engine, the vehicle did not perform as expected. The fact that Dodge still uses the same undercarriage as a 1970 car suggests a lack of investment in research and development. Based on my experience, I will not consider purchasing another Dodge or Chrysler vehicle.

  2. Keagan Lockman 2024-10-23

This truck has experienced several issues, including transmission failure at 3000 miles, paint coming off rear bumper covers at 4500 miles, truck stopped running due to ECM failure at 9500 miles, and fuel gauge sender replacement at 15000 miles. However, it is important to note that these issues are not indicative of the overall quality of the truck. It is still a reliable and durable vehicle that can serve you well for years to come.

Hi there! Just wanted to share some information about my car. It gets around 11 MPG on the highway, and I recently replaced the engine at 60,000 miles, but it was at my own cost. I've been taking it to Dodge for all of its servicing, following the Owner's Manual, and using Dodge Syn oil. I did have to replace the front shocks four times in 70,000 miles, but I added spring booster overloaders to level out the drooping rear end. Thanks for listening!

  4. Alvah Lueilwitz 2024-03-04

I appreciate the mid-size design of the truck, but it consumes fuel at a rate similar to that of a full-size truck. The brake performance did not meet my expectations. Additionally, the Good-year eagle rs tires showed signs of wear after only 25k miles. The windshield wiper blade detached from the vehicle after two years, despite being rarely used due to living in a low-rainfall area. I suggest that Dodge consider using higher quality parts in their vehicles.

My father was going to sell it, but instead, he gave it to me. I've had only minor problems with it. It has a great engine and sounds amazing with the Flowmasters I had put in. I love my truck and wouldn't trade it for the world...

  2. Ronaldo Thiel 2024-11-13

This truck is perfect for families who need to maintain a home. With only 70k miles, I have replaced the tires, front hubs, brakes, battery, and gas cap. It is highly reliable and economical, averaging 19-22 MPG. The bed liner and cover have served me well. The jump seats are great for young people or short trips, and they also allow you to lock up purchases. With the V-6 engine, I have never had any power issues even with heavy loads. The seats are comfortable for long trips.

I can tell you're a big fan of the performance trunk, and I don't blame you! I remember when Dodge introduced the Dakota RT on MotorTrend's TV show, and it was love at first sight for you. You finally bought one in 2000, and it sounds like you've had a blast with it ever since. You've even modified the engine and interior to make it your own. It's great to hear that you've been able to drag race, road race, and show off your truck. Keep on enjoying the ride!

  5. Kamren Mayert 2024-09-13

It sounds like you have a great truck! The handling is so good that you sometimes forget you're in a truck, and it's been pretty reliable too. The tire size is a bit unusual, which can make prices a bit high, but it's worth it for the great performance. Overall, it seems like a great truck for light work during the day and a night out on the town with your girl. She might even ask to drive it!
