1992 Dodge Dakota problems
The Dodge Dakota, known as the Ram Dakota for the final two years of production, is a mid-size pickup truck from Chrysler's Ram (formerly Dodge Truck) division. The first Dakota was introduced in late 1986 as a 1987 model. From its introduction through 2009, it was marketed under the Dodge brand, and for the final two years under the Ram brand.
The Dakota was sized above the compact Ford Ranger and Chevrolet S-10, but below the full-sized pickups such as Dodge's own Ram. It is a conventional design with body-on-frame construction and a leaf spring/live axle rear end. The Dakota was the first mid-size pickup with an optional V8 engine. For its entire production, the Dakota was built in Warren, Michigan.
The Dakota was nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award for 2000.

Common 1992 Dodge Dakota problems
The 1992 Dodge Dakota is known to have several common problems, primarily related to its powertrain and transmission.
One of the most frequently reported issues is the torque converter always being on the lock position. This problem causes the truck to stall when put into gear, unless the rpm is increased to around 2,000. The stalling occurs when the truck comes to a stop or at a red light. This problem is often accompanied by error codes 37 and 55, which indicate a problem with the automatic transmission. It is unclear whether these error codes are directly related to the lockup of the torque converter.
Another common problem with the 1992 Dodge Dakota is issues with the automatic transmission. Several users have reported problems with the gear position, including difficulty shifting into gear and slipping out of gear. This problem is often accompanied by error codes related to the automatic transmission. It is unclear whether these error codes are directly related to the gear position issues.
The 1992 Dodge Dakota also has problems with the clutch assembly and driveline. Several users have reported issues with the clutch assembly, including difficulty shifting gears and slipping out of gear. The driveline also has problems, including issues with the differential unit and universal joint. These problems can cause difficulty steering and handling the truck, particularly at low speeds.
In addition to these powertrain and transmission problems, the 1992 Dodge Dakota also has issues with the front and rear suspension. Several users have reported problems with the front and rear suspension, including difficulty steering and handling the truck. These problems can cause difficulty steering and handling the truck, particularly at high speeds.
The 1992 Dodge Dakota also has problems with the seat belts and airbags. Several users have reported problems with the seat belts, including difficulty buckling and unbuckling the seat belts. The airbags also have problems, including issues with the deployment of the airbags. These problems can cause injury or death in the event of a crash.
Finally, the 1992 Dodge Dakota has problems with the electrical system. Several users have reported problems with the electrical system, including issues with the battery and alternator. These problems can cause difficulty starting the truck and can cause the truck to stall while driving. These problems can also cause the dashboard lights to flicker or go out, which can make it difficult to see the road at night.
In conclusion, the 1992 Dodge Dakota has several common problems, primarily related to the powertrain and transmission. These problems can cause difficulty steering and handling the truck, particularly at low speeds. The 1992 Dodge Dakota also has problems with the front and rear suspension, seat belts and airbags, and the electrical system. These problems can cause injury or death in the event of a crash and can make it difficult to see the road at night.

- Summary: ON MY 1992 DODGE DAKOTA (V8 5.2L WITH AT, 4X4) THE ENGINE QUITS INTERMITTENTLY, SOMETIMES WHILE PARKED IDLING AND OTHER TIMES WHILE DRIVING. IT DOES IT WITHOUT WARNING, AS IF THE KEY IS TURNED OFF. SOMETIMES IT STARTS RIGHT UP AGAIN AND OTHER TIMES IT WILL HAVE TO CRANK FOR A WHILE BEFORE IT STARTS. I'VE HAD IT TO 2 DIFFERENT MECHANICS AND THEY CAN'T DETERMINE THE CAUSE. ALL SENSORS HAVE BEEN REPLACED AS WELL AS A NEW FUEL PUMP AND THE PROBLEM IS STILL THERE. TRUCK HAS JUST OVER 50,000 MILES ON IT. I'VE HAD IT FOR ABOUT 5 YEARS AND THE PROBLEM STARTED ABOUT A YEAR AGO. IT'S VERY DANGEROUS ESPECIALLY WHEN IT HAPPENS IN TRAFFIC OR ON THE INTERSTATE. *TR

- Summary: I WAS BACKING OUT OF MY GARAGE ON MY WAY TO A JOB INTERVIEW, WHEN I REALIZED I FORGOT SOMETHING . I DROVE BACK IN THE GARAGE, PUT THE SHIFTER IN PARK AND I STEPPED OUT OF THE TRUCK. NO SOONER HAD I GOTTEN AROUND THE TRUCK DOOR WHEN THE TRUCK JUST STARTED BACKING UP BY ITSELF. I ATTEMPTED TO JUMP BACK IN TO STOP IT BECAUSE I DID NOT WANT THE TRUCK TO HIT SOMEBODY . BUT THE MOMENTUM WAS TO QUICK AND THE DOOR SLAMMED AGAINST ME HITTING THE LEFT SIDE OF MY BODY,BOTH MY KNEES WERE KNOCKED TOGETHER,CAUSING BRUISING AND SOME SWELLING. I ALSO HAD A SMALL CUT ON MY RIGHT INDEX FINGER WHEN THE DOOR HIT ME,IT PUSHED MY ARM BACK AND MY FINGER HIT MY FRONT TEETH. I HAVE FOUND OUT THAT THERE IS A RECALL FOR THIS VERY SAME PROBLEM(PARK-TO-REVERSE). THIS IS THE FIRST TIME SINCE I'VE HAD THE VEHICLE IN MY POSSESSION THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED. I CALLED A DODGE DEALERSHIP IN B.R. AND THEY TOLD ME THIS VIN NUMBER WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE TRUCK WAS BOUGHT USED SO I DO NOT KNOW IF THE PREVIOUS OWNER HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE PARK-TO-REVERSE. SINCE THE ACCIDENT, I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO WORK AND HAVE BEEN SUFFERING WITH A LOT OF BACK, LEG, AND KNEE PAIN. *TR

I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF YOUR AGENCY HAS ANY REPORTS SUCH AS MINE CONCERNING THE DODGE STEERING PROBLEMS AND IN PARTICULAR THE DEALERSHIP OF HEMET CHRYSLER IN HEMET CALIFORNIA. - VIN: 1B7GG23Y2NS

THE FIRE DESTROYED EVERYTHING UNDER THE HOOD BUT THE METAL ENGINE PARTS AS WELL AS MELTED PART OF THE DASH & CARPET ON THE INTERIOR. AFTER PRYING OPEN THE HOOD & DOUSING THE FLAMES COMPLETELY, THE FIRE DEPARTMENT TOLD ME THAT A FUEL LINE LEAK HAD CAUSED THE BLAZE. APPARENTLY SOME FUEL LEAKED FROM THE LINE NEAR THE FUEL INJECTOR ASSEMBLY ON TOP OF THE ENGINE & AN ELECTRICAL SHORT CAUSED THE FUEL TO IGNITE. THANKFULLY I WAS ALONE WHEN THIS HAPPENED BECAUSE THE CAB FILLED W/SMOKE BEFORE I EVEN GOT PULLED OVER & I HAVE 2 SMALL CHILDREN THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN NO SMALL TASK GETTING THEM OUT SAFELY. THE DAMAGE WAS ESTIMATED @OVER $2000 BECAUSE OF THE COST OF THE WIRING & COMPUTER, NOT TO MENTION THE COST OF LABOR TO PUT IT BACK TOGETHER AGAIN. I ONLY HAD LIABILITY ON THE VEHICLE, SO MY ONLY HOPE OF GETTING THIS THING FIXED W/OUT LOSING MY TAIL IS IF THE MANUFACTURER WILL STAND BEHIND ITS PRODUCT AND FIX IT. MY BROTHER-IN-LAW ONLY RECENTLY INFORMED ME OF THE NHTSA WEB SITE, OR I CERTAINLY WOULD HAVE REPORTED THIS EARLIER. PLEASE HELP ANY WAY YOU CAN, MY FAMILY & I WOULD BE MOST APPRECIATIVE. THANKS. *AK

If you're looking for a great truck, you've come to the right place! My truck has well over 300,000 miles and is as solid and reliable as most new trucks. While the interior may not have much room, it still hauls and tows like a full-size truck. Dodge really did their homework before putting their name on this one!
-
I've owned this truck for a long time and it has been fantastic! It's a joy to drive, and it has a dependable, strong engine with lots of power. Despite having over 240,000 miles on the original engine, it hasn't missed a beat, aside from blowing a little smoke from worn rings. The paint has always been a bit of an issue, and it looks a little rough, but I would never get rid of it because it runs so well! It could be better on gas mileage, but with the standard shift, it's not too bad. I would highly recommend it to anyone lucky enough to find one.
-
I can tell you really love your 92 Dakota! It's great to have a vehicle that you enjoy driving so much. I also understand your preference for the V-8 in comparison to your 97 Dakota. It's clear that you appreciate the quality of these vehicles and their solid construction.
-
You brought this truck in 2002 with 153000 on it and it has been a reliable companion ever since. It has great pickup on the highway and is in excellent condition, both in terms of looks and performance. It still runs like new!
-
This truck is the only one I would buy because of the room in the back and the power under the hood.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to let you know that I've had the vehicle for 5 months now and it's been great so far. The 5-speed is very nice and it seems to be quite reliable overall. I was also pleasantly surprised to find that there's no rust, which is definitely a plus for a 12 year old vehicle in the St. Louis area.
John Okuneva 2024-10-21
Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that I am the second owner of this vehicle, but it has been in the family since new. The truck was lightly driven for the first 13 years, and then I've put on more regular miles (approx. 15k a year) since 2004. I'm happy to say that this truck is a rock and maintenance wise fairly inexpensive to own. The major work I've had done on it since I've owned it is a new drive shaft, new transfer case, and a new power control module.
Willard Schiller 2024-05-07
This vehicle was not up to my standards and required frequent maintenance. Despite being well-maintained, it still experienced issues with the transmission, transfer case, lifters, brakes, and drive shaft balance. The radiator was also of poor quality. Although I did not frequently use the 4-wheel drive, the vehicle still fell apart. As a knowledgeable consumer, I will not be purchasing another Dodge product in the future.
