1999 Dodge Dakota problems

dodge logo

The Dodge Dakota, known as the Ram Dakota for the final two years of production, is a mid-size pickup truck from Chrysler's Ram (formerly Dodge Truck) division. The first Dakota was introduced in late 1986 as a 1987 model. From its introduction through 2009, it was marketed under the Dodge brand, and for the final two years under the Ram brand.

The Dakota was sized above the compact Ford Ranger and Chevrolet S-10, but below the full-sized pickups such as Dodge's own Ram. It is a conventional design with body-on-frame construction and a leaf spring/live axle rear end. The Dakota was the first mid-size pickup with an optional V8 engine. For its entire production, the Dakota was built in Warren, Michigan.

The Dakota was nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award for 2000.

Common 1999 Dodge Dakota problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Dodge Dakota 1999, several common problems have been reported:

  1. Engine Randomly Shutting Off: Owners of the 1999 Dodge Dakota reported issues with the engine randomly shutting off while driving or when the engine got hot. This problem often occurred without warning and could lead to reduced engine performance. Upon inspection, it was found that an intermittent connection with the crank position sensor wire connector was contributing to this issue.
  2. Coolant Loss and Engine Overheating: Another common problem reported by owners of the 1999 Dodge Dakota was coolant loss and engine overheating. Many drivers experienced antifreeze leaks, causing the engine to overheat frequently, even in cool weather. This issue was often accompanied by a knocking sound and steam coming from the grille. Coolant leaks were typically caused by worn gaskets around various engine components like the thermostat housing, water pump, intake manifold, and timing cover.
  3. Oil Leaks: Owners of the 1999 Dodge Dakota also reported oil leaks as a common issue for some units of this model year. These leaks typically developed around areas such as the valve cover, intake manifold, timing cover, distributor O-ring, and the rear main seal. Using fluorescent engine oil dye could help pinpoint the source of the leak, and replacing the gasket was the recommended solution.

These problems with the Dodge Dakota 1999 could lead to significant issues if not addressed promptly. Regular maintenance and timely repairs are crucial to ensuring the longevity and performance of the vehicle.

Why did they stop making Dodge Dakota?

The Dodge Dakota actually existed for two years after the transition as the Ram Dakota before being finally axed without a replacement in 2011 due to dwindling sales, lack of development of anything resembling a replacement (the closest we maybe got was the 2006 Rampage concept truck), and a toughening business case.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-09-23
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: BRAKE LINE FAILURE, REAR BRAKES SEIZED. REPLACED REAR BRAKE SHOES AND WHEEL CYLINDERS 6,500 MILES AGO (APPROXIMATELY 1 1/2 YEARS AGO). SEVERAL WEEKS AGO 9/23/2011 MY TRUCK SUFFERED REAR BRAKE LINE FAILURE - STEEL LINE THAT RUNS FROM FRONT TO BACK - FAILURE ADJACENT LEFT REAR TIRE WITHIN FRAME HOUSING. I DISCOVERED THE LINE WALL FAILURE WITHIN AN AREA OF EXTREME CORROSION OF THE LINE - APPROXIMATELY SIX INCHES OF THE BRAKE LINE WITH REMAINING NINE PLUS FEET OF THE LINE IN LIKE NEW CONDITION. FURTHER REVIEW DISCOVERED THE LEFT REAR BRAKE ASSEMBLY TO BE SEVERELY CORRODED, IE SHOES, SPRINGS, ADJUSTERS, ETC. AS WELL AS THE LEFT FRONT ROTOR ASSEMBLY. REVIEW OF THE PHYSICAL BODY OF THE TRUCK FOUND THE LEFT FRONT CAB BODY MOUNT TO BE "GONE" (RUSTED AWAY!) AS WELL AS SEVERAL AREAS OF THE LEFT SIDE OF THE BODY PROPER ALSO EXHIBITING OXIDATION (TWO YEARS AGO THIS WAS NOT THE CASE AT ALL). THE REMAINDER OF THE TRUCK, CENTER SECTION AS WELL AS THE RIGHT SIDE (BRAKES INCLUDED) TO BE IN LIKE NEW CONDITION EXHIBITING NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR, WITH NO CORROSION. MY CONCLUSION, AS WELL AS A NUMBER OF OTHER "GEAR HEAD FRIENDS", IS THAT THE NEW ICE INHIBITOR BEING ADDED TO THE CENTER SECTION OF OUR CONNECTICUT ROADS DURING THE WINTER MONTHS IS PROMOTING EXTREME PREMATURE CORROSION RESULTING IN ULTIMATE FAILURE OF BRAKE, AND POSSIBLY FUEL LINE COMPONENTS, OF OUR VEHICLES. *TR

Negative 1999 Dodge Dakota car reviews

  1. Scot Rempel 2025-01-03

It seems like the catalytic converter is not functioning properly, and based on these reviews, it appears to be a common issue. Additionally, the automatic shifter column may be difficult to use as it is off by about 1/4 inch, making it hard to determine if you are in drive or 2nd gear. Unfortunately, the exterior mirrors do not fold in. It seems like this truck is in need of a redesign. You may want to consider a Nissan Frontier instead.

The vehicle has experienced several issues, including problems with ball joints, drive train, a/c, and shocks. Despite these challenges, we remain confident in our ability to address and resolve them effectively.

The ride can be quite stiff and the truck may rock on bumpy roads. Additionally, my wife and kids found the optics at the edges of the windshield to be poor and complained about it. The truck may consume more gas than expected. I also experienced some unexpected repairs, such as the leading belly pan and upper and lower ball joints failing. The gas tank is quite small, which means frequent fill-ups. Overall, my previous estimation of Dodge quality suffered with this truck. However, it's possible that other years are more thoughtfully put together.

I won't be teaching my child to say 'Hemi'! Instead, my child will be saying 'Honda' as I recently purchased a new Saturn Vue with the Honda Engine. Unfortunately, I've had some issues with my Dodge product, including the power steering pump, water pump, fan clutch, ball joints, and transmission, all before 95,000 miles. This is quite concerning and not up to the quality standards I expected. To further prove my point, my wife drove this truck very gently and at 95,000 miles, it still has the original brakes. If you're looking for quality, I suggest staying away from Dodge. Thank you for your attention.

I purchased my Dodge Dakota when it had 70,000 miles on it. I was excited to buy it, but it has been a bit of a challenge. It has a 2.5 L 4 cylinder engine that is supposed to carry over 3500 pounds, but I have had a difficult time getting up to speed and feel like I am going to get run over. Additionally, with a 4 cylinder engine, I only average 18 mpg, which is lower than I expected. Unfortunately, the truck has needed both upper and lower ball joints, a radiator at 80,000 miles, the crankshaft sensor at 85,000 miles, and the front seal went out at 91,000 miles. I have spent over 1,200 dollars in two years on repairs. However, at the moment, the truck has 107,000 miles on it and is finally running well, although I am still not getting anywhere fast.

Good power poor traction, but overall a fun and comfortable truck to drive. It has a very nice appearance and is designed to carry 4x8ft sheets if tied down, although the cab could be a little larger. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Hello! If you're looking for a mid-sized truck, the Dodge Dakota is an excellent choice! I respectfully disagree with the unhappy reviews. I understand that most people don't write reviews if they are satisfied, but I've had my truck for over a year and I can say that the truck's overall performance and features make up for any repairs you may need to do. The truck's size is far less bulky than that of a full-size pickup, which allows for easy parking in most situations. The truck's ride, power, and curb appeal are all excellent. With preventive maintenance, you can eliminate numerous problems listed in other reviews. Additionally, the Dakota's interior build quality far exceeds that of many other manufacturers, meaning no rattles! Thank you for considering the Dodge Dakota.

Hey there! Thanks for sharing your review with us. I just wanted to chime in and say that I appreciate your honest opinion about your 99 Dakota V6 Sport. It sounds like you've made some awesome modifications to it, and I'm glad to hear that it's still running strong after 140,000+ miles! While the gas mileage may not be the best, it's great to hear that the ride quality is still smooth, even with those 20

Your truck has been a reliable companion throughout your ownership of about 85,000 miles. It's impressive that it has only required $1000 in repairs, which is a testament to its durability. Although the cat was replaced early on (covered by warranty), and the alignment went awry early, causing you to only get 15,000 miles out of the two front stock tires (alignment fix was warranty), you have not experienced any other serious issues. The V6 engine provides good power with some pep when you need it, and you have been getting right around 20 MPG with a bias toward highway miles.

Hi there! Although Iacocca hasn't been CEO of Chrysler for a while, he definitely left a lasting impact. The result of his work is the Dakota, which I am really happy with. It works like a mid-size pickup should and drives/handles like a large car. I find it to be a sturdy and fine utility/tow vehicle. It reminds me of my first pickup love, a 1986 Ford Ranger XLT 4WD, but without the accompanying 1986 Ranger transmission problem. I hope this helps!
