2001 Dodge Dakota problems
The Dodge Dakota, known as the Ram Dakota for the final two years of production, is a mid-size pickup truck from Chrysler's Ram (formerly Dodge Truck) division. The first Dakota was introduced in late 1986 as a 1987 model. From its introduction through 2009, it was marketed under the Dodge brand, and for the final two years under the Ram brand.
The Dakota was sized above the compact Ford Ranger and Chevrolet S-10, but below the full-sized pickups such as Dodge's own Ram. It is a conventional design with body-on-frame construction and a leaf spring/live axle rear end. The Dakota was the first mid-size pickup with an optional V8 engine. For its entire production, the Dakota was built in Warren, Michigan.
The Dakota was nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award for 2000.

Common 2001 Dodge Dakota problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the Dodge Dakota 2001, several common problems have been reported:
- Engine Problems:
- Owners of the 1999 Dodge Dakota reported various engine issues, such as random shutdowns while driving or when the engine got hot. This was attributed to an intermittent connection with the crank position sensor wire connector, affecting engine performance.
- Oil Leaks:
- For the 1997 Dodge Dakota, oil leaks were a common problem, typically around the valve cover, intake manifold, timing cover, distributor O-ring, and rear main seal. Using fluorescent engine oil dye to locate the leak and replacing the gasket were recommended solutions.
- Brake Issues:
- The 2001 Dodge Dakota faced significant brake problems, making the truck unsafe and untrustworthy to drive, especially in city traffic. Brake cylinder lockup, smoking hot brakes, and brake lockup were among the reported issues.
- Body and Paint Troubles:
- The 2000 model of the Dodge Dakota had complaints related to body and paint issues, including paint fading off the roof, oxidation of the clear coat, and rusting wheel wells. Nearly thirty complaints were recorded regarding the paint and body of the vehicle, making it a year to avoid.
These problems highlight the importance of thorough research before purchasing a used Dodge Dakota 2001 to ensure a reliable and safe driving experience.

- Summary: ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES AND PICKUP TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE (4X4), IF MOISTURE LEAKS INTO THE FRONT SUSPENSION UPPER BALL JOINT, EVACUATION OF THE LUBRICANT AND CORROSION OF THE JOINT MAY CAUSE THE JOINT TO WEAR OVER AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME. THIS COULD CAUSE A CLUNKING NOISE IN THE FRONT SUSPENSION, WHICH MAY NOT ALWAYS BE HEARD BY THE VEHICLE OCCUPANTS.
- Consequence: EXCESSIVE WEAR IN THE UPPER BALL JOINT MAY ALLOW IT TO SEPARATE, WHICH COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FRONT SUSPENSION UPPER BALL JOINTS. THIS SAFETY IMPROVEMENT CAMPAIGN BEGAN ON DECEMBER 21, 2004. OWNERS CAN CONTACT DAIMLERCHRYSLER AT 1-800-853-1403.

- Consequence: THIS COULD AFFECT DRIVER VISIBILITY, COULD PREVENT A DRIVER FROM SOUNDING A WARNING BY USING THE HORN, AND, WHEN THE TURN SIGNALS ARE INOPERATIVE, THE DRIVER CANNOT USE THEM TO SIGNAL INTENT TO TURN, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REROUTE THE WIRE HARNESS AND REPAIR THE HARNESS IF NECESSARY. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN NOVEMBER 3, 2003. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT DAIMLERCHRYSLER AT 1-800-992-1997.

A great compromise between fullsize and compact trucks. It can tow up to 6,600 pounds, which is more than enough for most people. Additionally, it gets fairly good gas mileage for a V-8, which is very powerful. I can't say enough about mine!

This is an excellent truck with noticeable advantages over larger trucks. It's easy to get into and use the bed since it's lower to the ground. The only drawback is that it averages 15 mpg.

I have the 5.9 and usually get around 12mpg, sometimes even 14 with highway driving. It's definitely worth it if you tow. Plus, it's reassuring to know that I can accelerate faster than any other truck out there (except 5.9RT, but who wants 2WD).

I bought my truck brand new and fully loaded. I considered full-sized trucks, but the fun factor of the Dakota made it the clear winner. I've even towed a 12-foot trailer 600 miles with no issues, but mostly I use it to transport people and light cargo. So far, the truck has been trouble-free, and if I had to make the decision again, I wouldn't change a thing!

I'm so glad to hear that you've been enjoying your truck since you bought it new in August 2001! The 4.7L V8 engine sounds like it provides plenty of power, and the body style is great. It's wonderful to hear that it has been reliable from the start and that it doesn't consume any oil between changes. It's great that it can handle all of your towing and hauling needs with ease. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

I have experienced several issues with my vehicle, including window gear failure, leaking seals, control arm replacement, throttle body problems, window leaks, transmission slipping, O2 sensor failure, ECM failure, and worn-out stabilizer bar joints. Despite multiple attempts to fix these issues, they have not been resolved to my satisfaction. As a result, I have lost confidence in Dodge as a brand.

Hi there! I noticed that you mentioned you bought your car used a year ago and have had to replace a few things since then. It sounds like you've had to replace the fuel pump, 2 oxygen sensors, catalytic converter and the automatic door lock mechanism. That's quite a bit of work! I hope everything is running smoothly now. It looks like you've spent around $3,000 on repairs so far. Let me know if there's anything else I can help you with!

I purchased my truck in September of 2001 and I have no plans to trade it in. It's a fun vehicle to drive and it holds its own on the highway. However, I do wish it had more comfortable features for the driver so that I could keep my eyes on the road. During a road trip to the Indy 500 two years ago, I had an issue with the a/c compressor and had to have it replaced. The dealer had previously put sealant in to fix an a/c leak that I had complained about, which according to my friend's mechanic, was the root of the problem. Despite some wear and tear caused by poor front suspension, I still rely on my truck and enjoy listening to it run.

Hi there! I just wanted to share that my Dakota has now reached 63000 miles and I'm happy to report that I haven't had any major issues with it. The 4.7 engine is really powerful and provides great acceleration, while still maintaining an average fuel economy of around 17-18mpg. Plus, there's plenty of room for at least 5 adults. Thanks for listening!
