dodge logo

The Dodge Dakota, known as the Ram Dakota for the final two years of production, is a mid-size pickup truck from Chrysler's Ram (formerly Dodge Truck) division. The first Dakota was introduced in late 1986 as a 1987 model. From its introduction through 2009, it was marketed under the Dodge brand, and for the final two years under the Ram brand.

The Dakota was sized above the compact Ford Ranger and Chevrolet S-10, but below the full-sized pickups such as Dodge's own Ram. It is a conventional design with body-on-frame construction and a leaf spring/live axle rear end. The Dakota was the first mid-size pickup with an optional V8 engine. For its entire production, the Dakota was built in Warren, Michigan.

The Dakota was nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award for 2000.

Engine Problems:

  • Fluctuating idle: This problem is characterized by the engine's RPM fluctuating while idling, which can lead to rough running and stalling. This issue can be caused by various factors, including vacuum leaks, faulty idle air control valves, or dirty throttle bodies. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and address this problem.
  • Recurring misfire on the same cylinder: This issue is caused by a consistent misfire on a particular cylinder, which can lead to reduced engine performance and increased emissions. This problem can be caused by faulty spark plugs, ignition coils, or fuel injectors. Regular inspections and maintenance can help identify and address this issue.

The 2009 Dodge Dakota has also faced issues with its brake system, specifically brake cylinder lock-up, which is the most-reported problem for this model year. This issue can lead to increased stopping distances, reduced braking performance, and potential brake failure. Regular inspections and maintenance of the brake system can help identify and address this issue.

Moreover, the 2009 Dakota has faced issues with its steering system, including intermediate steering shaft noises and excessive play in the steering wheel. These issues can lead to reduced steering performance and increased wear on the steering components. Regular inspections and maintenance can help identify and address these issues.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-09-22
  • VIN: 1D3HW32K39S
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: After starting the Dakota, I pushed on the brake pedal so I could put the automatic transmission in Drive. My foot went all the way to the floor. I tried again with the same result. I checked the brake fluid reservoir. It was a bit low, but not empty. When the tow truck arrived to haul it away, I noticed a pool of brake fluid on the driveway approximately below the master cylinder. It is clear the brake system experience a catastrophic failure. I will know more when my mechanic reports what he has found. He suspects corrosion on the brake line. No one was hurt and there was no property damage because I did not put the truck in gear.

Negative 2009 Dodge Dakota car reviews

  1. Brendon Treutel 2024-09-12

Replacing parts can be quite expensive, with shop labor costing $102 or more.

  2. Ellis Blick 2024-08-13

The 2008 Dakota has been a great truck so far! The V6 has a lot of low-end torque, but it may struggle going uphill or passing if the RPMs are not high enough. I have owned both 1st and 2nd generation Dakotas, and other than some brake issues, I have never had any problems with them.

  3. Nils Walker 2024-07-03

I bought my 08 Dakota used with around 57,000 miles and it was in great shape with plenty of service records. However, over the past two years, I have had to replace several parts including balljoints, tie rods, wheel bearings, struts, calipers, fuel pump, rear end, transmission service (still slipping) and a new motor due to a rod knock. Unfortunately, the most recent issue is the steering rack + pinion and the power steering system is going bad. Despite my efforts to maintain it, this truck has proven to be unreliable, a gas hog, and an uncomfortable ride. While I have always been a Mopar fan, this experience has led me to reconsider my options for future purchases.

  4. Kelton Glover 2024-05-29

The first night I owned the vehicle, I started it and noticed that the Variable Speed Fan was locked up, causing it to roar like an 18 wheeler. Additionally, there was a transmission problem where the vehicle would jolt when coming to a stop at 25 MPH. Despite multiple trips to the dealer, these issues were never resolved. Unfortunately, I had to get rid of the vehicle at 28,900 miles due to these persistent problems. It was a frustrating experience, but I hope to have better luck with my next vehicle.

I am confident in stating that my 2008 Dodge Dakota has had several minor issues while under warranty. Despite resetting the radio clock six times, it still does not work, and I have given up on turning it in for repairs. The rack and pinion, along with the power steering pump, went out at 37,400 miles, and it cost me $1,740 to fix it. The gas mileage averages around 16 to 18 on open highways with no load, and only 12 to 14 miles per gallon when pulling a small boat weighing around 1,350 pounds. The power on the 3.7 is low, and it will not stay in overdrive when going up small hills. This is the second Dodge Dakota I have owned, and I believe that the warranty should be better. I have followed the maintenance schedule in the book, but if you go over 60 miles past the oil change, the warranty is void. I turned mine in and had only 12 miles left before the warranty was voided.

Positive 2009 Dodge Dakota car reviews

I was searching for a truck that was fully loaded, but not too large. After comparing all the available models, I noticed that the smaller, almost car-sized trucks were comparable in price to the Dakota. I took it for a quick test drive and immediately noticed that the V6 Magnum had the power that could be used if needed. The interior is great - almost nice enough to be considered luxury - and it has all the features you could ask for. All in all, it's a great ride. I average 18-22mpg combined, which isn't too bad for a truck this size. It towed my 16 foot, 1500lb boat with no effort. The stock stereo system is nice. The new exterior design makes the truck look much nicer. It's a great truck for the money!

This is the 2nd Dakota we have owned. The 1st was a 1994. Despite reading some negative reviews about the new Dakota, we decided to take it for a test drive. To our surprise, we couldn't find anything wrong with it. In fact, for the price, it was everything we wanted in a truck and more. We've been getting great gas mileage too, with the first two fill-ups averaging at 15 and 17 miles per gallon.

This little truck is equipped with the 4.7 at 302 hp and 329 ft. lb. of torque. It's the missing link Dodge needed to revive, unless it comes back in a 4 cylinder Diesel!!! 😁👍👍👍👍👍

Hey there! I just wanted to share with you how much I love my truck. It's actually a Sport w/V-8, crew cab and this is my 3rd Dakota. So far, it's my favorite! It's red, fast, looks sporty, handles great, rides good, doors open wide, seats are firm and supportive, tows like a champ, and looks good anywhere. Plus, it has the best warranty of anyone! I traded down from a full-size Chevy and I like this one better. It's easier to get in and out of and my wife loves the size. The mileage is 21-24 on the highway when driving sensibly, and of course, it's lower in the city. The acceleration is matched by nothing else in its' class, and the brakes and transmission work flawlessly. When you turn on your truck, does it return the favor? Mine sure does!

I was originally planning to get the 07 at the end of the year, but after hearing about the new V8, I decided to wait. I'm happy to say that I wasn't disappointed, the power is very good. The MPG could be better, but it's okay at about 16.5 average. I really appreciate all the storage space, but the dash looks and feels like cheap hard plastic. The cab has a lot of wind noise, but with the stereo on, it's not noticeable. The ride is stiff and bouncy, which is very noticeable while going around a turn with bumps. It feels like the back end is going to lose traction. I have the Sport model, and I think it should have been set up to look sportier, like the Colorado with a lowered stance. The front seat only holds two people, while my older model holds three. Three would be better. The stock rear tinted windows are dark.
