The contact stated that while her husband was driving at 25 MPH and attempting to slow the vehicle with the brake pedal depressed all the way to the floorboard, the vehicle failed to come to a complete stop. As a result, the vehicle careened off the roadway and into a ditch. The air bags did not deploy. A police report was filed, and injuries were reported. The occupants were all transported to an area hospital by EMT for treatment. Defective Spare Tire Hoist Wheel Carrier Winch Hanger The Spare Tire Hoist Wheel Carrier Winch Hanger contains soft rubber part which disintegrates easily with the elements (rain, cold, dirt, wind, etc.). This allows friction between the metal carrier mechanism and the steel wire that holds the tire. The friction eventually “cuts” the wire which holds the 50 lbs+ spare tire setting it free and dropping from under the truck and onto the road while traveling (moving). Issue The "DEFECTIVE" Replacement part (Spare Tire Hoist Wheel Carrier Winch Hanger continues to be sold in the market with NO Modification. The part should be recalled and corrected to prevent an accident. Car models impacted: Dodge Dakota, Ram, Durango, etc. Experience I was traveling about 40 MPH when the spare tire fell off from under the truck due to this defective part. I saw the tire (via rear view mirror) bounce off about 10 feet in the air and roll down the road at a fast rate of speed until it hit a curve and then a tree. With luck there was no one behind me or pedestrians around. This could have caused a fatal injury if the tire had hit a car behind me as it could have hit the windshield due to the high bounce rate and speed. It would have knocked down and injured a cyclist or motorcycle. It could have even hit and injured a pedestrian!. Thank God none of this happen. I really love my 98 Dakota! It has been a reliable vehicle for me, although I have had some trouble with the catalytic converter. Unfortunately, I seem to have to replace it annually. When the engine is pulling, I notice a rattling sound, which is a bit frustrating. I love the feeling of acceleration from my V6 with the low geared rear-end, but it seems to be taking a toll on the catalytic converter. I have spoken with the Dodge team about this issue, but they haven't given me any indication that my driving is causing the problem. Unfortunately, they won't evaluate the O2 sensor when they replace the faulty catalytic converters. Overall, I still really enjoy driving my Dakota!

I think it's the best mid-size truck you can buy. I haven't had any major problems with it. It does use a lot of gas, but with a few modifications and laying off the gas, the mileage goes up.

I noticed that you have a 1998 Dakota club cab. It's great to hear that you love the smooth ride and tight turning. Your truck sounds like it's in great condition, especially considering its age. It's impressive that you can go over 500 miles on the interstate with a 22 gallon fuel tank. Of course, no vehicle is perfect, but it sounds like you have a reliable and enjoyable ride.

My second car was a truck that I absolutely loved. It had a powerful 5.2 liter V-8 engine that could handle any task, but it did consume a lot of fuel. I used to travel frequently from southwest Michigan to mid Minnesota, and the gas alone would cost me $100 one way. However, this is to be expected with a big V-8 engine. Although I did encounter some issues with the truck, I later discovered that it had been in an accident before I owned it. Despite this, I would highly recommend this type of truck to anyone. If the newer models were more visually appealing and had the hemi, I would definitely consider purchasing a 2005 model.

The brakes on this vehicle require a significant amount of leg strength to stop quickly, which has left me feeling that they are inadequate. Despite having the front end aligned and checked multiple times, there has been a persistent thump/jerk in the steering wheel that has only worsened over time. While everything is within tolerance, the steering is poor and the truck tends to wander while on the road. However, the power is impressive and the fuel economy is average at 15-17 mpg.

Despite having only 48,000 miles when I purchased it 1 1/2 years ago, I have had to replace the transmission twice, the radiator, brakes, ball joints, and heat. Although the Dodge truck had potential, unfortunately it fell short. However, the paint and interior have held up well and the passenger compartment has great ergonomics. The size is perfect for a work or commuter truck, but the build quality needs improvement before it can be recommended. There were some issues with the cab leaking through the rear weld, which was fixed a couple of times under warranty and then on my own dime. Additionally, the water pump went out and the AC drain was poorly designed, causing condensate to drain into the passenger compartment. The most significant problems were with the front end, with the upper and lower ball joints having to be replaced twice and the front steering mechanism needing replacement. Despite these issues, the fuel mileage is acceptable on the highway, but poor in town. Based on my experience, I won't be considering DC vehicles again.

The truck's V-6 engine has been causing persistent issues, despite my efforts to fix it. Despite replacing the computer, coil, fuel pump, and performing a tune-up, the truck continues to cut out while driving at 60 mph, sometimes backfiring and refusing to start. I have invested a significant amount of time and money into resolving this issue, but it persists. Have any other individuals experienced similar problems with this type of truck?
