Common Dodge Caravan problems

The Dodge Caravan, a minivan manufactured from 1984 to 2020, has been a popular choice among drivers.

Transmission problems are the most common complaint among Dodge Caravan owners. These problems can lead to dangerous driving conditions and expensive repairs. Some specific transmission issues include transmission failure, a short in the transaxle control module, and successful forward shift followed by a lockup. These problems can be inconvenient, expensive, and even dangerous in certain conditions.

Engine problems are another issue that has been reported among Dodge Caravan owners. These problems can be just as costly to deal with as transmission issues. Some specific engine problems include complete engine failure, the check engine light constantly turning on while driving, and a flat-out refusal to start.

Interior accessory issues are another common problem among Dodge Caravan owners. These issues can include problems with the power door locks, power windows, and other interior accessories. These problems can be inconvenient and can lead to expensive repairs.

The worst model years for the Dodge Caravan include 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006. These model years are known for having a straight shot of models that went wrong. The dominant reasons for the downfall of these years include transmission issues, engine problems, and interior accessory issues.

When considering a used Dodge Caravan, it is important to be aware of these common problems and to choose a model year that is known for reliability. By doing so, you can reduce the likelihood of encountering these issues and make the smartest investment decision for your life.

I was able to press the break with the tip of my toe, manage to put the car in park, readjust the seat and go back into drive. All this while the light had turned green and cars were accelerating behind me. This happened twice tonight!! I am taller than my mom, but she is the primary driver of this vehicle. And this has started happening more often. I am VERY concerned for her safety with this issue driving to work and heading home. And she is a senior driver. You can imagine my concern... We always check the seats when first getting into the car to make sure everything is ok. But now the seat is dislodging without warning ️. Could this possibly be a recall issue we missed? I think it's time to trade in this vehicle for a different one if nothing can be done

Latest negative Dodge Caravan car reviews

  1. Corbin Hettinger 2025-10-01

    Vehicle year: 2006

I've had my second minivan from Chrysler and I bought it used with 28k kms (19000 miles). The quality seems good, but I'm disappointed with the mileage. The 3.3 litre is only averaging 12 mpg in the city and 16 mpg on the highway (converted to US gallons). I took it back to the dealer and they changed the sensor, but it's still the same. When I told them it was unacceptable, they just shrugged. I'm not driving the van fast or rough, and I'm only going 60-65 mph on the highway. The mileage is nowhere near as good as my previous 1993 Caravan 3.3 litre.

  2. Cleve Cartwright 2025-09-28

    Vehicle year: 2005

We have had some issues with our car, including having to replace the brakes twice in less than 2 years and replacing all coolant hoses due to rotting. The gas mileage is only 18 in the city, and 22 on the highway if we are careful. The ride can be noisy and uncomfortable, and the cup holders are a bit difficult to adjust in the front. We have found it to be quite a change from our previous Town and Country, which felt like a Cadillac in comparison. We are looking forward to exploring other options in the future. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I purchased this van in 1999 with 108,000 miles on it. Since then, I have put 102,000 miles on the same 3.0 V6 engine. Although it smokes a bit at startup due to worn valve guide seals, I have found that using Maxlife Valvoline oil has helped to alleviate this issue. The engine, which is from Mitsubishi, is still running as strong as it did when I first got it. I have not experienced any electrical problems, and the exhaust system is great. While the suspension is starting to wear, the interior is durable and the van is still great to drive. As for the transmission and air conditioning, I had the transmission rebuilt at 120,000 miles for $1800. I recommend asking for an upgraded rebuild kit rather than a factory kit, as it is worth the extra money. The torque converter started acting up at 190,000 miles. I also had a new compressor installed for the air conditioning when I purchased the van, and I have found that the system needs to be recharged every year. I recommend investing in your own recharge kit, as it is an inexpensive solution.

Hi there! I wanted to share some information about my van with you. It has a 3.3 litre V6 engine with a 4 speed trans. with overdive. While the transmission has had some issues, the engine has been very reliable. I only had to replace the head gasket once. Interestingly, the rebuilder told me that the transmission is similar to the one fitted in the old Dodge Omni and Horizon compacts from the 80's, so there are plenty of spare parts available. Just keep in mind that you may need to replace it every 40,000 miles. Also, the ABS system failed at around 150,000 miles, but luckily it was covered under warranty and was a low-cost repair. Let me know if you have any questions!

This car could be called the Dodge Random; everything seems to work randomly. Doors, windows, locks, and engine can be unpredictable. It can be frustrating to have to make expensive repairs that only provide temporary solutions. Rolling down a window can be scary when you're not sure if it will go back up, or if the van will even start. There have been many problems with this van, so it may not be the best investment for your money.

Our SWB Caravan Sport has been an absolute joy to own. Over the past 2.5 years, we have driven it for more than 75,000 miles and it has been virtually trouble-free. The only issue we encountered was a minor sliding door problem, which was promptly resolved under warranty. This versatile vehicle has exceeded our expectations, serving as a reliable people-hauler for local trips and an excellent choice for vacations and camping trips. It boasts terrific handling, consistently delivering over 21 mpg combined, and looks great too. Even my engineer daughter loves driving it! We have decided to pass it on to our son, who now has two small kids, and replace it with a 2005 Chrysler Town and Country Touring model. We are absolutely sold on this car and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable and versatile vehicle.

I bought my 1997 Dodge Caravan Sport brand new for $22K in October 1996. Now, 12 years later, the van has 135,000 miles on it. Despite hearing many complaints from other consumers about this van, I have personally never experienced any problems with it! I am not sure if it is just a coincidence or if I am simply lucky. At 135K miles, the original transmission still shifts smoothly and there have been no electrical problems whatsoever! All I have had to do is replace the brake pads every 30K miles and change the engine oil every 7K miles, which I have done myself. I did change the front rotors at about 100K miles, but I have never tuned up the engine or changed the transmission fluid. The AC still works like new and blows ice cold air. In 12 years, I have only had to change the tires three times, of course!

I bought this van from a friend who had it since new. He never had any problems with it. I bought it with 147k miles on it for $1,500, and it's in top shape.

I bought this car for 39,000 and gave it to my son as a wedding present with 165,000 miles on it in 7/10. It was truly an amazing car! In fact, it was the best quality American car I have owned in 40 years. I only had to replace the water pump myself for $30 at 120K miles. Although the washers never worked and the pump corroded, I didn't mind washing the windshield by hand once a year. There was absolutely nothing to complain about. The car was comfortable to ride in, had plenty of power, and was roomy. When we let it go after 7 years, the exterior was like it just came out of the showroom. The engine and transmission were superb. By the way, I highly recommend using only Chrysler ATF 4 or 5 in your car to avoid transmission problems. This Caravan raised the bar for any future cars I should buy!

I had a 1988 Plymouth Voyager that I bought new and absolutely loved. When it was time for a new vehicle, I decided to go with the 2003 Caravan and I'm happy to say that I love it just as much. As someone who is 5'2
