ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-01-23
- Fire: 1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: FUEL WIRING HARNESS IS TO CLOSE TO EXHAUST CAUSED MELTING OF WIRES WHILE GOING DOWN THE ROAD. I NOTICED A BURNING SMELL IN THE CABIN OF CARAVAN. IT HAPPENED APPROX. A MILE FROM MY HOUSE AT APPROX 45MPH AND A STRONG ODOR OF GAS WAS NOTICEABLE. THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE CORRECTED. VEHICLE BEGAN TO STALL COMING UP DRIVE WAY. WE STILL HAVE THE CARAVAN BUT HAVE PARKED IT. WE BELIEVE WHEN THE MELTING OCCURRED IT CAUSED OTHER POSSIBLE ISSUES AND ARE SCARED TO HAVE IT FIXED, NOT KNOWING WHAT OTHER ISSUES THIS MAY HAVE CAUSED THAT WE WILL NOT KNOW UNTIL WE ARE GOING DOWN THE ROAD, IT'S NOT A RISK I'M WILLING TO TAKE...ESPECIALLY WITH GAS BEING FLAMMABLE AND SHORTENING OF FUEL ELECTRICAL WIRES. THAT'S A FIRE IN THE MAKING, IT'S NOT WORTH RISKING OUR LIVES OR ANYONE ELSE'S ON ROAD. I HAVE SEEN SEVERAL OTHER COMPLAINTS ON REVIEW PAGES AND MECHANICS BLOGS/POSTS. THIS SEEMS TO BE A CONTINUING ISSUE THAT HAS NOT BEEN ADDRESSED. I HAVE SEEN THAT OTHER YEAR MODELS WERE RECALLED DUE TO THE SAME ISSUE BUT NOT THE 2003 DODGE CARAVAN SPORT. CAN YOU PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS MATTER? IT COULD BE A SIMPLE FIX BY MOVING WIRES AWAY FROM EXHAUST BUT YOU ARE UNAWARE THAT, IT'S A ISSUE, UNTIL IT HAPPENS. BECAUSE IT NOT A VISIBLE HARNESS THAT YOU CAN SEE JUST BY RAISING HOOD.IT'S ONLY WHEN YOU HAVE PROBLEMS THAT YOU REALLY GET TO LOOKING AND THAT'S WHEN YOU SEE IT MELTED AND BURNED WITH STRONG ODOR COMING OUT FROM UNDER HOOD WHEN WE CHECKED IT. ALSO CATALYTIC CONVERTER WAS HOT THIS SHOULD NOT BE A CONSUMER EXPENSE WHEN IT HAPPENS. DUE TO WIRES TO CLOSE TO EXHAUST IT SEEMS TO BE A ISSUE FOR DODGE, SINCE THIS IS DUE TO THEIR FAULT AND NOT THE CONSUMER, DODGE SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR COST WHEN FUEL HARNESS WIRES MELTS AND ANY FURTHER DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE WIRES SHORTENING OUT . THIS IS A DANGEROUS/SERIOUS ISSUE THAT I HOPE CAN BE ADDRESSED SOON...BEFORE A LIFE IS LOST.

I love this van! Even though I never intended on buying a minivan, 3 kids later and here I am, and I LIKE IT! It drives great and handles like a car. Plus, I'm covered on the powertrain for 7 years.

I was searching for an affordable minivan that was also dependable and comfortable. When I test drove the Dodge Caravan, I knew right away that I wouldn't find a better minivan for the price.

We've had our caravan for 5 months and it's been great! It rides and drives really well and we've been getting good fuel economy (19-26mpg).

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to let you know that I purchased this van for $13,999. I've been using it to commute to work every day and it's been fantastic so far. I also had a great experience with the dealer. Take care!

Hi there! I noticed that you're a prior Caravan owner. I completely agree that the 3.3 engine is one of the most proven and reliable engines out there. Also, I think the SXT package is awesome! However, I did notice that the column shift can be a bit inconvenient as it's right in the way of the stereo volume control. Overall, it's a great car and I hope you're enjoying it!

I have been a loyal Chrysler minivan customer since 1989. However, my last two models have had recurring transmission issues and my kids have complained about the stiff seats. Additionally, I have had to replace the belt too many times. I believe that Chrysler needs to address these transmission problems before I can recommend their minivans to anyone.

In the past 8 months, my vehicle has been towed twice. Additionally, I have had to replace the computer twice due to burnout, and fix a wire that was rubbing. Furthermore, I experienced a power steering rack noise while steering, which was accompanied by fluid leakage.

Our van experienced a crankshaft failure after only 200 miles, before we even made the first payment. Despite multiple attempts to contact the dealership we purchased the car from, Accardi Dodge, we received no response. Fortunately, we were able to have the car towed to another dealership, Arrigo Dodge West Palm Beach, FL, who promptly contacted the factory representative to secure a new engine. Unfortunately, we were not offered a loaner car and our vehicle was out of service for a week. As a result of this experience, we are extremely dissatisfied with the dealership we purchased the car from and will not be returning for future purchases.

I've had the van for 3 weeks now and I must say, it has the quietest engine I've had in some time. The comfort inside is great and the view of the road is perfect. The car drives great. Although it's not the best at taking turns and can be slightly shaky in poor weather conditions, it's still slightly above average. Overall, I'm quite pleased with my purchase!
