STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-01-06
  • VIN: 2B4FP2538WR
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: I AM THE SECOND OWNER OF A 1998 DODGE CARAVAN AND BOUGHT A CARFAX REPORT WHEN PURCHASING WHICH WAS CLEAN SHOWING NO ACCIDENTS, NO PROBLEMS. THE ONE RECALL ALERT ON THIS YEAR AND MODEL WAS TAKEN CARE OF PREVIOUSLY. THE CAR HAS GENERALLY BEEN DEPENDABLE, OTHER THAN ONGOING PROBLEMS WITH THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER WHICH FAILS INTERMITTENTLY AND ALL THE PANEL LIGHTS GO OFF. ON JANUARY 6TH, 2015 I WAS SHOPPING NOT FAR FROM HOME AND UPON EXITING THE STORE PARKING LOT TO LEAVE (2-3 MPH) TURNING THE WHEEL NORMALLY WHILE BACKING UP FROM MY SPACE, THE ENTIRE STEERING WHEEL JUST FELL INTO MY HANDS LEAVING IT ATTACHED BY ONLY A FEW WIRES. THERE WAS NO PRIOR WARNING OF THE UPCOMING FAILURE, NO SHAKING, NO WOBBLE, NOTHING.I AM A SENIOR AND WAS IN THE CAR ALONE. LUCKILY, SOME STRANGERS HELPED PUSH ME BACK INTO PARKING SPACE BY HOLDING AND TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL IN PLACE, AS IT WOULD NOT SNAP BACK IN. THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER STATED THAT IN HIS CAREER HE HAD NEVER SEEN THIS, MY EXPERIENCED MECHANIC SAID THE SAME. THE CAR IS CURRENTLY IN THE SHOP. THE ENTIRE COLUMN HAS TO BE REPLACED, THE CLOCK SPRING, ETC. AND EVEN WITH USED PARTS IT WILL BE COSTLY. I LIVE IN THE LA AREA WITH A LOT OF TRAFFIC ON EVERY STREET. WHAT FRIGHTENS ME IS THAT I WOULD LIKELY HAVE BEEN KILLED HAD THIS HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING, AND ESPECIALLY SINCE I HAD FIRST PLANNED ON GOING TO A MALL VIA FREEWAY. THIS WAS A TRAGIC ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN. HOW MANY MORE OF THESE STEERING WHEELS HAVE FALLEN OFF UNREPORTED? HOW MANY MORE ARE READY TO OCCUR TO SOME UNLUCKY DRIVER? *TR

  • Summary: THE LOS ANGELES CBS AFFILIATE STATION AIRED A STORY ABOUT CHRYSLER VEHICLES YEAR 2007 TO 2012 THAT WERE BEING INVESTIGATED FOR A POTENTIAL RECALL. THE PROBLEM IS A FAULTY TIPM, ALSO KNOWN AS A POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE. VEHICLE OWNERS REPORT INSTRUMENT PANEL PROBLEMS, GAUGES NOT WORKING, AIRBAG NOT WORKING, WINDSHIELD WIPERS OPERATING WITHOUT BEING TURNED ON, PROBLEMS STARTING THE VEHICLE, AND SO ON. I HAVE A 1998 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN WITH MANY OF THESE SAME PROBLEMS/SYMPTOMS. I SPENT $212 ON INSPECTION AND DIAGNOSIS FEES. PEP BOYS TOLD ME THAT THE PROBLEM WAS THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE AND IT WOULD TAKE A PROHIBITIVELY HIGH PRICE TO REPLACE. MY VEHICLE HAS RECENTLY EXPERIENCED PROBLEMS SIMILAR TO THE ONES DESCRIBED ABOVE: FUEL GAUGE NOT CONSISTENTLY SHOWING THE CORRECT AMOUNT OF FUEL IN THE TANK; THE AIRBAG AND HORN NOT WORKING; THE WIPERS OCCASIONALLY OPERATE WITHOUT BEING TURNED ON; THE POWER DOOR LOCKS DO NOT WORK PROPERLY WHEN VEHICLE IS BEING LOCKED & UNLOCKED WITH THE KEY; THE HEATER OPERATES WITHOUT BEING TURNED ON, AND SO ON. I WAS WONDERING IF THIS INFORMATION CAN BE USED SENT TO THE MANUFACTURER OR COMPARED IN INFORMATION SUBMITTED BY OTHER CHRYSLER OWNERS. THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE IS A DURABLE PART, IT SHOULD OPERATE WELL FOR THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE. I'M WONDERING IF THERE IS ANY INVESTIGATION GOING ON WHICH MAY LEAD TO A RECALL. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION. *TR

Negative 1998 Dodge Caravan car reviews

Although my experience with the Dodge Caravan has been challenging, I have gained valuable knowledge about the importance of proper maintenance and repair. I have shared my experience with friends and acquaintances, and I am confident that with the right care, this vehicle can be reliable and efficient. While I did encounter some issues with the computer and other components, I was able to address them with the help of a skilled mechanic. Overall, I believe that the Dodge Caravan can be a great choice for those who prioritize regular maintenance and attention to detail.

  2. Janick Nitzsche 2024-08-16

The steering column has malfunctioned, the air conditioner has failed after 90,000 miles, and a new transmission is required at 194,000 miles. Additionally, the front seat belts do not function properly, which is a safety concern. Despite these issues, I am grateful that the vehicle is still operational at such high mileage.

  3. Watson Abshire 2024-08-03

I have owned three Chrysler vehicles in the past, an '86, '92, and '98. However, I have decided to move on from the brand due to recurring issues with the AC systems and electronics, as well as excessive wind noise. Additionally, I have found the 3.0L engine to be underpowered and unsuitable for heavy traffic. As a result, I have decided to purchase a Honda Odyssey for my next vehicle.

At around 22K, I experienced some trouble with the front brakes and front disk rotors. Unfortunately, at around 39K, I had the same issue with the brakes going bad again. We also had some problems with the valve cover gaskets, which caused a major oil leak. Despite tightening up the bolts on the covers, they would end up loosening up every 10 to 12 thousand miles or so. Regrettably, the transmission just went out yesterday at 58K miles, right at the start of a vacation trip. I am now considering switching to Honda or Toyota. Thank you for your attention, Dodge.

  5. Angel Kemmer 2024-05-12

I bought the cheapest model I could get (4 cylinder) and was hoping for a more affordable option. However, I have really enjoyed the utility, design, looks, comfort, handling, and sharp turning of the vehicle. Unfortunately, I have experienced some reliability issues, including needing a third water pump and having to replace the transmission twice and the AC system once. Additionally, the fuel economy is not as good as I expected for a 4 cylinder engine, averaging about 19 mpg.

Consider trading in or selling your Caravan before it reaches 100K miles. This is because the transmission may need to be replaced, which can cost up to $2K. If you own a 3.0L engine, it is important to change the timing belt every 60K miles to avoid potential damage to the engine. While I really like the Caravan, I would recommend trading it in or selling it before it reaches 90K miles. If you own a 3.0L engine, it is important to be aware of the potential risks associated with the interference engine. It may be helpful to consult with a trusted mechanic for more information.

My husband and I have had very few issues with this car. It has been an excellent family car. In fact, we just purchased another Dodge Caravan.

  3. Gustave Hill 2024-08-01

You've had this car for 3 years, buying it used from a friend. Fortunately, the only problem you've had (knocking on wood) was that the A/C went out. There was another issue with the cruise control that was related to a recall that was fixed for free. You travel a lot on two-lane highways because of where you live and you need a reliable car, and she's been there for you every mile.

  4. Manley Steuber 2024-06-07

You have an excellent running and driving vehicle! Even though it has been used for 75,000 miles, it runs like a brand new truck.

  5. Colby Blanda 2024-05-29

I bought this car to replace my dying 1990 caravan. I chose the base model and added the 3.1 litre v6, with 2nd sliding door and seven pass seating. Although I had a problem with a sticking valve around 36,000 miles, the dealer was able to fix it after 3 trips, even though my warranty had run out. If you maintain this vehicle with regular 3600-5000 mile service, it will do its job. The carpet may be cheap, but it's still a great multi-passenger vehicle for $18,000+/-.
