Common 2005 Dodge Caravan problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 2005 Dodge Caravan, several common problems have been reported:

  • Electrical Issues: Owners have reported various electrical problems, including headlight failure, dashboard alerts going off without explanation, and blinkers flashing intermittently. These issues are often linked to the aging of the vehicle, leading to failures in the electrical system after years of wear and tear.
  • Engine and Powertrain Issues: While less common, some owners have faced problems with the engine and powertrain. Loss of power while in motion has been reported, which is usually attributed to electrical issues rather than mechanical ones. Major transmission issues below 200,000 miles are not frequently reported, but some owners have experienced issues like engine stalling due to a dirty throttle body.
  • Recalls: The 2005 Dodge Caravan has had 9 recalls on file with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). While this number is within reason for a vehicle of this age, owners may face multiple minor electrical fixes over time, such as replacing wiring harnesses and headlights, which can add up in terms of maintenance costs.
  • Overall Reliability: Despite these issues, many owners have found the 2005 Dodge Caravan to be a reliable vehicle, with some reporting high mileage exceeding 200,000 miles and even up to 500,000 miles. Owners have praised the roominess, cargo space, and comfort of the vehicle, highlighting its durability and low maintenance requirements.

By addressing these common problems with the 2005 Dodge Caravan based on owner complaints, it provides valuable insights for potential buyers or current owners to be aware of potential issues and make informed decisions regarding maintenance and repairs.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-07
  • VIN: 1D4GP45R65B
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: The door locks do not work for the sliding doors or the passenger side of the vehicle. We tried to fix this issue by checking the door lock fuse out to make sure it was okay, and it was. The driver's side is the only one that locks. The passenger door lock will not push down and lock when pressed down manually. I feel this is a safety issue and I have seen that others online are having problems with their door locks not working or getting stuck and not unlocking. I don't understand why there is no recall on this issue with the 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan. This is a serious safe issue on any vehicle. My sliding doors have to be manually locked and as I said, the passenger side won't lock, so it's dangerous for me to have passengers. My local Dodge dealership offered to diagnose it, but it's $125.00 for them to just find out what's causing this if they could even do that. Clearly it is an issue of some kind since one door locks. Can you please look into this? Again, I know others have had door lock issues with the Dodge Caravan. Why hasn't this been fixed and recalled already? This is very frustrating. Also, I don't remember the exact date I purchased my vehicle in June, so I've given it my best guess. Thank you for your time in reviewing this. Resolution that fixes this for myself and everyone else who is dealing with this, would be much appreciated.

After driving 15,000 miles, we have had to replace several parts including spark plugs, air bag, injectors, brakes (pads and rotors), and power steering. We have also experienced some issues with noisy engine belts, cv joints, and sliding doors that don't close properly. Although we can feel air coming through the door rubber seals, the most frustrating issue has been trying to get a roof paint warranty through Chrysler customer service. Unfortunately, they have informed us that Chrysler will not participate in this repair.

I purchased a Dodge Grand Caravan in June 2005, and although it has not yet reached its fifth year, it has unfortunately presented a number of issues. In comparison, my 1999 Corolla has proven to be more reliable and less expensive to maintain. While I cannot recommend this particular vehicle, I would be happy to discuss other Dodge products with you. Thank you for considering my experience.

Our 2005 Dodge Caravan has about 52,000 miles on it now. Unfortunately, we've had a few issues with it such as the transmission slipping in reverse and the rack and pinion leaking on the passenger side. However, we were lucky enough to have these problems covered under our extended warranty. We did have a few other issues such as the right side front impact sensor, right tie rod end, and sway bar bushings needing replacement, but unfortunately, these were not covered under warranty. The dealer quoted us $900 to fix these problems, but we decided to do the repairs ourselves. With just $12 for sway bar bushings, $35 for tie rod end, and $35 for the impact sensor, we were able to fix the issues in just 1.5 hours. Despite these issues, we still enjoy driving our van. However, we would recommend doing some research before purchasing a Dodge. Thank you for reading!

The Stow and Go feature is fantastic, and there is ample room for our family of five. It is also the most economical vehicle in its class. The power doors are a great addition. However, there have been some issues, such as a glitch in the transmission that scared me into purchasing an extended warranty. Additionally, new brakes were needed after only 30K miles. The key fob and power lock doors also failed at around 45K miles, and I had to pay the dealership $140 to flash the computer again, which I felt should have been a warranty issue. Unfortunately, I had to replace the front end bushings and rods at 51K miles for $420, which the dealership says is a common issue. I also had to replace the passenger power sliding side module for $350, as well as the driver side cable and motor for $500. These issues are not ideal for a 3-year-old vehicle...

I strongly believe that the door panel trim on the driver's side of my 2005 Dodge Caravan was poorly designed. The panel holding the window buttons protrudes about 2-3 inches into where my leg should be resting, causing discomfort and soreness after driving just a few miles. It is clear that this change was unnecessary and serves no purpose. Despite trying various solutions such as pillows and pads, nothing seems to alleviate the issue. As a confident driver, I expect a comfortable and well-designed vehicle, and this issue must be addressed.

I'm thrilled to hear that you're enjoying your fourth Dodge Caravan! It's great to hear that the mileage keeps improving as you break in the engine. On your recent trip to South Carolina, it sounds like you had a comfortable ride and were able to enjoy the driving experience. I'm glad to hear that you didn't feel too tired after stopping for the night and that the new features are working well for you. It's wonderful to hear that your family is also enjoying the vehicle. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

The Dodge SXT is such a great car! It's quiet, smooth, and reliable. The handling is confident and the brakes are very easy to modulate. Although I've only driven it for 2K, I've been getting around 16-17 miles per gallon around town, which is slightly below the 19-26 rating for the 3.3L. But overall, I absolutely love the features for the price!

  3. Wendell Jones 2024-11-01

That sounds like an amazing driving experience! Your family and you must be thrilled to have such a luxurious vehicle. It's great to hear that you're enjoying it so much.

Since your last car was a compact sedan, you might have thought that the Caravan would be overwhelming to handle. However, you found that it was not the case. You felt right at ease driving the Caravan and wished you had purchased one sooner!

  5. Chris Blanda 2024-10-25

I used to feel trapped in a woman's vehicle, but now I'm a man cruising in a mini van and loving every mile of it! This van has been incredibly fuel efficient (27+ on trips), comfortable (fits my family of 5 perfectly), and useful (Sto and Go baby!). The power slider doors are a wonderful feature, and I find this van just as comfortable to drive as many high-end imported cars. Don't be afraid, men! Embrace this mini-man van! Although we did have a few bumps at the beginning, they were easily handled under warranty. The dealership was excellent and on the ball.
