SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN,WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-01-20
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 2B4GP45G0XR
- Components: SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN,WHEELS
- Summary: PREPARING TO EXIT A PARKING LOT, THE GEAR SHIFT WAS ACCIDENTALLY CAUGHT BY MY SLEEVE AND PULLED DOWN TO THE "DRIVE" POSITION. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT RUNNING, BUT IT BEGAN TO MOVE FORWARD. BEING ON SOMEWHAT OF A SLOPE, THE VEHICLE PULLED ONTO A BUSY STREET. I GRABBED THE WHEEL TO TURN THE VAN AWAY FROM TRAFFIC, BUT IT HIT AND SCRAPED AGAINST A HIGH CURB, FLATTENING 2 TIRES, DAMAGING THE WHEELS/RIMS OF THOSE TIRES, BENDING A STRUT AND OTHER DAMAGE TO THE SUSPENSION (I GOT A REPAIR ESTIMATE FROM FIRESTONE, WHICH TOTALED OVER $1,900.00). I DIDN'T THINK IT WAS POSSIBLE FOR THE GEAR SHIFT TO MOVE WITHOUT HAVING MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE, BUT MOVE IT DID AND SO DID THE VAN. OTHER THAN BEING FRIGHTENED AND SHAKEN, WE WERE FORTUNATE THAT NO PHYSICAL INJURIES OCCURRED. HOWEVER, HAD I NOT HAD THAT SPLIT SECOND REACTION TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL, THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN A VERY BAD COLLISION WITH AT LEAST TWO VEHICLES DRIVING DOWN THE BUSY STREET. WONDERING WHY THE GEAR SHIFT WAS ABLE TO MOVE WITHOUT THE CAR RUNNING AND WITHOUT MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE, I DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT CHRYSLER KNOWS ABOUT THIS GRIEVOUS OMISSION AND DID NOT WANT TO SPEND THE EXTRA $9.00 PER VAN TO INSTALL A BRAKE SHIFT INTERLOCK. I'M INCREDULOUS! I INTEND TO WRITE TO CHRYSLER IN HOPES OF BEING REIMBURSED FOR THE DAMAGES SUSTAINED TO MY VEHICLE, BUT FIRST WANTED TO REPORT THIS INCIDENT TO THE APPROPRIATE AGENCY. *TR
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2001-03-15
- VIN: 2B4GP45G0XR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE, THE INSTRUMENT PANEL SHUTS OFF WITHOUT WARNING AND FOR NO KNOWN REASON. DODGE TOLD US THAT IT WAS A SHORT IN THE WIRING IN THE DASH THAT CAUSED THE COMPUTER TO SHUT DOWN. THE TECHNICIANS INSISTED THAT THE PROBLEM WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND, ESPECIALLY SINCE IT COULD NOT BE REPLICATED ON DEMAND. THIS HAS CONTINUED TO HAPPEN PERIODICALLY, MOST RECENTLY IN JANUARY 2014, WHEN THE COMPUTER WENT OUT, SHUTTING DOWN THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AND THE WHEELS ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE DRIVER'S SIDE CONTINUED FORWARD, WHICH PUSHED THE VEHICLE INTO A CURB, FLATTENING TWO TIRES AND DAMAGING THOSE RESPECTIVE RIMS. ALTHOUGH NO ONE WAS INJURED, HAD THERE BEEN A VEHICLE NEXT TO THE VAN, AS OPPOSED TO A HIGH CURB, THE DEFECT IN THE VEHICLES WIRING AND COMPUTER WOULD HAVE CAUSED A COLLISION. THERE IS NEVER ANY WARNING PRIOR TO THE ELECTRICAL AND INSTRUMENT PANEL GOING OUT. THERE IS NO KNOWN TRIGGER THAT CAUSES THIS PROBLEM. IT IS NOT TRIGGERED BY GOING OVER A BUMP, DRIVING AT ANY PARTICULAR SPEED, STOPPING OR ACCELERATING. I WANTED TO REPORT THIS, BECAUSE A WITNESS (WHO HAPPENED TO BE A POLICE OFFICER) TO THE MOST RECENT INCIDENT ADVISED US THAT THIS IS A KNOWN AND COMMON ISSUE IN DODGE CARAVANS BUILT IN THE LATE 1990S/EARLY 2000S. *TR
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-09-18
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: I WAS DRIVING AND I NOTICED A DING DING SOUND THAT WAS TRYING TO INFORM ME THAT SOMETHING WAS WRONG BUT I DID NOT KNOW WHERE IT WAS COMING FROM UNTIL I LOOKED UP AND SAW THE AIRBAG LIGHT HAD POPPED ON AND AFTER A MOMENT OR SO I TRIED TO USE MY HORN, IT DID NOT WORK THERE WAS AN ENGINE LIGHT ON AT THE TIME IT CAME ON ALSO WHAT WAS NOT ON PRIOR TO THE AIRBAG LIGHT POPPING ON. *TR
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-06-01
- VIN: 2B4GP44G8XR
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: WHILE REPLACING REAR BRAKE DRUMS IN MY GARAGE, IT BECAME NECESSARY TO JACK THE VEHICLE TO RAISE THE REAR LEFT SIDE AND REMOVE THE REAR LEFT WHEEL. I BROKE THE LUG NUTS LOOSE WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS ON THE GROUND, THEN, USING THE JACK SUPPLIED WITH THE VEHICLE, I FOLLOWED THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL TO POSITION THE JACK IN THE RECOMMENDED LOCATION TOWARD THE LEFT REAR AT THE IDENTIFIED JACKING LOCATION. I RAISED THE VEHICLE JUST ENOUGH TO REMOVE THE WHEEL. AS I WAS SPINNING THE LUG NUTS OFF, THE CAR FELL OFF THE JACK. THIS OCCURRED BECAUSE RUST HAD COMPROMISED THE STRUCTURAL METAL AT THE JACKING LOCATION AND THE WEIGHT, WHILE THE CAR WAS BEING RAISED, CRUSHED THE WEAKENED STEEL. FORTUNATELY, I WAS NOT TOO CLOSE AND WAS NOT CAUGHT UNDER THE WHEEL OR OTHER BODY PART. UPON CLOSE INSPECTION IT BECAME APPARENT THAT THE STRUCTURE OF THE CAR, AT THE RECOMMENDED JACKING LOCATION, HAD BEEN SEVERELY COMPROMISED BY RUST. THE EXTENT OF THE RUST DAMAGE WAS NOT OBVIOUS UNTIL THE CAR FELL OFF THE JACK. AT THAT POINT THE PAINT WHICH HAD BEEN HIDING THE DAMAGE HAD FALLEN OFF AS THE STRUCTURAL STEEL UNDER IT COLLAPSED UNDER THE WEIGHT OF THE CAR. THERE IS ALSO A RUBBER PAD THAT CONTRIBUTED TO CONCEALMENT OF THE STRUCTURAL DAMAGE SINCE IT COVERED MOST OF THE DAMAGED AREA SURROUNDING THE STUD USED TO PROPERLY LOCATE THE TOP OF THE JACK. I BELIEVE THIS TO BE A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE THAT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO CAUSE INJURY TO ANYONE WHO FOLLOWS THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN CHRYSLER'S OWNER'S MANUAL. *TR
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-12-03
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: DURING AN INSPECTION OF OUR VAN IT WAS NOTED THAT THE DRIVERS SIDE STRUT TOWER IS RUSTING THROUGH. AFTER LOOKING INTO THIS ISSUE ON LINE I NOTICED MANY CASES WITH EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM. I AM TRYING TO DETERMINE IF THERE IS ANY RECOURSE TO GET THIS CONDITION REPAIRED. ALSO I AM TRYING TO DETERMINE IF THERE IS SOME TYPE OF WARNING BEFORE THIS CONDITION FAILS RESULTING IN AN ACCIDENT. *TR
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-10-11
- Fire: 1
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: WITHIN 30 MINS. AFTER PICKING UP MY VAN FROM THE DEALER (CERRITOS DODGE) FOR THE FUEL RAIL RECALL. I NOTICED THE SMELL OF GAS,( I THOUGHT WAS O.K. SINCE FUEL RAIL HAD JUST BEEN REPLACED) AND I LOOKED AT THE DASHBOARD AND NOTICED GAS GAUGE FLUCTUATING MOVING BACK AND FORTH, AND SMOKE STARTED. COMING FROM UNDER HOOD. I CALLED [XXX] (CERRITOS DODGE SERVICE DEPT.) WHOM I HAD BEEN TALKING TO ABOUT MY VAN WHEN IT WAS IN SHOP. I CALLED HIM TO INFORM HIM ABOUT THE GAS/GAUGE. HE TOLD ME TO GO TO NEAREST GAS STATION. I DID. AFTER THAT, I TOOK CAR HOME, PARKED IT FOR THE REMAINDER OF THAT EVENING. THE NEXT DAY, SAME THING (SMELL OF GAS)AND FLUCTUATING GAS GAUGE), WITHIN 15 MINUTES OF DRIVING TO GET OIL CHANGED,FUEL BELL STARTED RINGING. I CALLED MR. RICHARDSON, HE SAID TO BRING VAN IN, BUT.HE DIDN'T KNOW IF THEY WOULD BE ABLE TO CHECK IT OUT THAT DAY. AT THAT POINT I WAS FRUSTRATED,BECAUSE THEY HAD THE VAN (3) DAYS MORE THAN THEY PROMISED. BOTTOM LINE, IS VAN WAS AGAIN CHECKED OUT, NOW HE SAYS ITS THE FUEL PUMP. PRIOR TO THE FUEL RAIL BREAKING. I HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH MY FUEL SYSTEM. I WAS INFORMED OF ANOTHER RECALL WITH THE FUEL PUMP WITH THE 1999 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN ( BUT, WAS TOLD NOT WITH MY MODEL.) THAT CLEARLY IS A FORM OF BIASED DISCRIMINATION. AND, YET MY 1999 VAN HAS THE IDENTICAL FUEL SYSTEM PROBLEMS. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

IN ADDITION, THE FRONT STRUT TOWER ASSEMBLY WAS ALSO FOUND TO BE COMPLETELY RUSTED. THE DEALER ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE VEHICLE COULD NOT BE ALIGNED AND WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 115,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-05-04
- Fire: 1
- VIN: 1B4GT54L1XB
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: MY PARENTS VAN. A COUPLE OF DAYS BEFORE THIS HAPPENED I TRIED TO START IT AND ALL IT DID WAS CLICK. I TRIED TO START IT AGAIN AND IT STARTED RIGHT UP. I TURNED IT BACK OFF AND TRIED TO START IT AGAIN,SAME THING HAPPENED. ALL IT DID WAS CLICK. I THEN TRIED TO START IT AGAIN AND IT STARTED RIGHT UP. WE DROVE TO TOWN WITH NO FURTHER ISSUES THAT DAY. THE NEXT DAY IT STARTED RIGHT UP. WE DROVE ABOUT EIGHTY MILES TO MY SISTERS HOUSE. WHEN WE CAME OUT TO LEAVE IN THE EVENING. I STARTED THE VAN AND IT STARTED RIGHT UP,BUT IT WAS MAKING A RATTLING NOISE THAT I COULD JUST BARELY HEAR OVER THE ENGINE NOISE. I TURNED THE VAN OFF,BUT SOMETHING WAS STILL RUNNING. THE STARTER WAS STILL ENGAGED WITH THE ENGINE AND RUNNING. I TURNED THE KEY BACK ON AND THE ENGINE STARTED AGAIN. I TURNED THE ENGINE OFF AGAIN AND THE SAME THING HAPPENED. THE STARTER STAYED RUNNING. I ATTEMPTED TO DRIVE TWO HUNDRED YARDS TO MY SISTERS GARAGE TO GET PLIERS. I REALIZED I PROBABLY DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO GET TO HER GARAGE BEFORE THE STARTER BURNT UP. I RAN IN THE HOUSE LEAVING THE VAN RUNNING. BY THE TIME I GOT BACK TO THE VAN AND GOT THE HOOD OPEN THE STARTER WAS STARTING TO SMOKE AND MAKE A REAL BAD WINNING NOISE. MY WIFE GOT A FIRE EXTINGUISHER. I PULLED THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE. BY THE TIME THAT I GOT THE CABLE OFF THE STARTER WAS ALREADY BURNT UP AND STARTING TO CATCH FIRE. THEIR WAS SO MUCH SMOKE. I HAVE KNOW DOUBT THAT IF I HAD NOT GOTTEN THE BATTERY CABLE DISCONNECTED WHEN I DID THAT THE VAN WOULD HAVE GONE UP IN FLAMES. THE OTHER BAD THING WAS THAT IT WAS SITTING NEXT TO MY SISTERS HOUSE AND THAT WOULD HAVE GONE UP IN FLAMES WITH IT. I AM JUST GLAD THAT IT DID NOT HAPPEN WHEN MY SEVENTY FIVE YEAR OLD PARENTS WERE DRIVING IT,BECAUSE I BELIEVE THAT THE VAN WOULD HAVE DEFIANTLY CAUGHT FIRE AND THEY WOULD NOT HAVE KNOWN WHAT TO DO FAST ENOUGH. THIS YEAR MAKE AND MODEL NEEDS TO BE RECALLED BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED. THANKS. *TR

LOCAL DODGE DEALER SAID THIS IS NOT COVERED UNDER ANY WARRANTY OR RECALL AND THAT IT'S ONLY A COMESTIC PROBLEM. THEY WANT $2200 TO REPAIR WHICH IS MORE THAN VALUE OF VEHICLE. EVERYTHING I HAVE READ INDICATES THIS IS ABSOLUTELY A SAFETY ISSUE AND WOULD CAUSE A CRASH IF DRIVING WHEN THE STRUT TOWER COMPLETELY FAILS. WHY IS THERE NOT A RECALL FOR THIS WELL KNOWN AND DOCEMENTED SAFETY PROBLEM? *TR

I wouldn't have made it through the toddler years without it. The Dodge was incredibly reliable, even with a little lifter noise at 45,000 miles. My friends had purchased vans from other companies around the same time, but the Dodge proved to be far more dependable.

You've owned this Grand Caravan for 7 years and bought it used in 2000 off of Hertz. You've only had 1 major A/C repair in 7 years, and the speed sensor has gone twice. Other than that, just normal wear and tear maintenance. It's been pretty reliable, roomy, and a nice ride. You get 25mpg highway from FL to NY and 18 around town.

Hey there! Don't forget to do the maintenance before you hit the road. Have a great ride!

Bought brand new. Rides nice, is very comfortable and is great for lots of passengers and is great for hauling things after removing seats. Lots of room. 3.3L V6 is very responsive and gets van going quickly despite the extra weight the van has.Only repair needed was a wheel alignment but it was covered by warranty. As long as I rotate tires evey 6000 the alignment has stayed true.

I am so happy with my purchase of this sporty mini van! My family and I have loved driving it since day one. We have even taken it on three trips to Orlando, Florida and are already planning our fourth. We have never had any problems with it, which is amazing considering we are a family of six. We also have a Mercedes-Benz, but we prefer driving our fully loaded white sport mini van. We are even considering buying another Dodge mini van someday. However, we had a negative experience with the sales department at Oasis Dodge in Oldbridge, New Jersey. Their salespeople were very rude, so we will not be buying from them again.

This van has been a dependable transporter for our family of five, and despite its lack of performance, it was an inexpensive purchase. Although I have had a few problems, such as the head gasket blowing at around 65,000 miles and needing to add one to two pints of oil for the past year, it has still been a reliable vehicle. I was informed that the head gasket repair would cost around $1800, but the car is now only slightly more.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my Caravan. I purchased it with 87,000 miles and it has been a reliable vehicle ever since. It has never left me stranded on the side of the road, which is a huge plus! Mine has the 3.0L engine which runs great once fully warmed up. I have noticed that the engine ticks for a few minutes before going away, but I assume it's just sticky lifters and it doesn't cause any harm. The ride is smooth and it gets great gas mileage for a big vehicle. Overall, I think it's a well-laid-out vehicle that I would definitely recommend to others.

The quality of the product is subpar, and I have spent over $2000 in repairs. The safety features are inadequate, as you are not required to hold the brake pedal when starting to drive. The dealership service is unsatisfactory, and their hourly rate of $71.00 is exorbitant considering their lack of expertise.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my van. Unfortunately, I had some issues with the speed sensor at 14K and 60K miles, which caused some trouble with the transmission. Additionally, I had to replace the brake pads and rotors at 20K, and then again at 40K and 65K. Finally, the master cylinder had to be replaced at 80K. While I did have some problems with the brake system, I still managed to drive the van for 50K miles before deciding to trade it in tonight. Thanks for listening!

This 1999 2.4 litre 4 cyl minivan has been a reliable companion for us. We purchased it with 67000 miles on the clock and in the 2 years since, it has never let us down. We have only had to perform regular routine maintenance and replace the brakes (including new front rotors) and shocks and struts. It is a pleasure to drive on the highway and has excellent gas mileage. The only time we feel a lack of power is when there are 4 or more people in the car. Currently, it has 87000 miles on the clock and is still going strong. Overall, it is a great general-purpose runabout.
