Common 1995 Dodge Caravan problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 1995 Dodge Caravan, several common problems have been reported:

  • Starting Issues and Fuel System Problems: Some owners have faced starting issues where the engine cranks but does not start. This could be related to fuel system components like fuel injectors, fuel pump, or fuel pressure regulator.
  • Power Door Lock Failure: Another common problem reported is power door lock failure, particularly in the 2005 Dodge Caravan model year. This issue is often attributed to a faulty key and internal switch, causing the door locks to malfunction.
  • Engine Stalling and Rough Idle: Owners of the 2003 Dodge Caravan have reported engine stalling issues caused by a dirty throttle body. Symptoms include low engine idle, oil light flashing, rough idle in gear, and engine hesitation during acceleration. Cleaning the throttle body is a common solution to address this problem.
  • Leaking Oil Filter Adapter: For the 2006 Dodge Caravan, leaks in the oil filter adapter in the engine block have been a prevalent issue. This problem is often traced back to the oil filter housing adapter or the gasket itself. Dodge has released a revised oil filter adapter to resolve this issue, with some repairs covered under warranty.

These problems highlight the range of issues that owners of the 1995 Dodge Caravan have faced over the years, from engine-related issues to electrical and fuel system concerns. Addressing these problems promptly and with the appropriate repairs can help maintain the performance and reliability of the Dodge Caravan.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-07-05
  • VIN: 2B4GP44G9XR
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: AFTER DRIVING ABOUT 350 MILES BACK FROM A TRIP, TRANSMISSION FAILED. WAS DRIVING DOWN THE INTERSTATE WHEN TRAFFIC STARTED TO SLOW DOWN AND COME TO A STOP (THIS WAS NOT A SUDDEN STOP). I TRIED TO SLOW DOWN BUT THE VEHICLE LURCHED FORWARD AND STARTED MAKING GRINDING NOISES. I HAD TO STEER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD TO AVOID HITTING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. THERE WAS NO INDICATION OF TROUBLE PRIOR TO THIS DURING THE TRIP. WHILE IN IDLE, THERE WAS NO GRINDING NOISE. WHEN WE STARTED TO MOVE AGAIN THE ENGINE WOULD NOT SHIFT AND STARTED MAKING GRINDING NOISES. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALER WHO TOLD ME THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION WAS RUINED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THERE IS ONLY 67,000 MILE ON THE VEHICLE. DEALER CHARGED ALMOST $3,000 TO PUT IN A REBUILT TRANSMISSION. WHEN I PICKED IT UP, THE SERVICE SHOP WAS VERY RUDE. WHEN ASKED IF IT WAS NORMAL FOR THIS TO HAPPEN AND IF THIS WAS THE KIND OF QUALITY ONE COULD EXPECT FROM DODGE, THE SERVICEMAN SAID HE DIDN'T KNOW AND ACTED LIKE HE DIDN'T CARE. HE SAID TO CALL THE 800 NUMBER IF I WASN'T HAPPY. WHEN I CALLED THE 800 NUMBER, THE PERSON I TALKED TO ACTED LIKE HE DIDN'T CARE AND BASICALLY TRIED TO TELL ME IT WAS BECAUSE I DID NOT HAVE MY VEHICLE SERVICED PROPERLY. I TOLD HIM THE CAR WAS PROPERLY MAINTAINED AND THE TRANSMISSION FLUID HAD BEEN CHANGED JULY 1ST. HE TOLD ME THAT IF I BROUGHT IT TO PLACES LIKE JIFFY LUBE TO HAVE THE TRANSMISSION FLUID CHANGED OR IF I BROUGHT IT TO OTHER PLACES FOR MAINTENANCE THAT THEY DID NOT DO A GOOD JOB AND DID NOT DO IT PROPERLY. I ASKED IF THERE WERE ANY OTHER COMPLAINTS REGARDING TRANSMISSION FAILURES AND WAS TOLD THERE WERE NONE. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION. I HAVE HAD AN AIR SENSOR GO OUT (WHICH CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO BE STUCK IN SECOND GEAR). THE VEHICLE STILL DOES NOT SEEM TO BE SHIFTING PROPERLY. IT NOW WHINES WHEN DRIVING IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AND WILL PROBABLY HAVE TO GO BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP.*AK

ALTHOUGH THERE WERE NO INJURIES OR ACCIDENTS, IT WAS STOP AND GO ON THE WAY HOME AT NIGHT. THE CAR WAS PURCHASED IN JULY 1995 FROM SUBURBAN DODGE IN METUCHEN, NJ. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER (NOW MCDONAGH DODGE) TO HAVE THE VEHICLE DIAGNOSED. THEY SAID THAT IT WAS A TRANSMISSION FAILURE. THE CAR DOES NOT RUN PROPERLY NOW. I HAVE NOT HAD IT REPAIRED BECAUSE IT IS AN EXPENSIVE REPAIR. IN ADDITION THE AC COMPRESSOR ALSO NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. ACCORDING TO THE DEALER IF THE COMPRESSOR IS NOT REPLACED A BELT MAY BREAK AND I COULD LOSE POWER TO THE STEERING. THESE PROBLEMS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN FOR A VEHICLE THAT HAS ONLY 94,000 MILES. *JB

Negative 1995 Dodge Caravan car reviews

  1. Kellen Grant 2025-01-03

My parents bought this car brand new in 1995. It has been passed down through the family a couple of times and has been well-maintained with regular servicing. We were fortunate to have lifetime oil changes from the dealer, although they have since changed the interval from 3k to 7.5k miles, so we now get a free oil change only once every three times. It does burn 1-1.5 quarts of oil between changes, but with regular maintenance, it runs like a dream. The transmission was replaced at 150k miles and had some metal in it at 250k miles, but it has now clocked 293k miles and is still going strong. If you change the oil every 3k miles, replace the brakes and tires when needed, it will last forever. Although I have had to replace the driver's seat three times, and the front passenger seat is a bit wobbly, the tapedeck stopped working (which I replaced with a CD player), and the A/C broke down (which would have cost $1,000 to fix, so I decided against it), it's still a great car. The window motor is a bit temperamental and only goes down 3 inches, but it's a minor issue.

Hi there! It sounds like you have a unique combination of the 3.O, 6 cylinder engine with a 3-speed auto transmission. Despite some challenges with the transmission, including four rebuilds and a factory reman replacement, your van has been extremely reliable. The engine has been wonderful and you're getting an impressive 23 mpg on average! Other than an occasional problem with the throttle control sensor, you love this vehicle. With 143,000 miles on it, you use it for camping with the seats removed and would continue to drive it indefinitely if you were sure that the last rebuild would last beyond the 6,000 mile warranty. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

Before I bought the '95 Caravan, I did my research via Consumer Reports and found that the Caravan's were improving into the mid-'90s. Despite the rattling that started from the moment I took it home, it worked pretty well mechanically for about 4 years. However, I did have some issues with the brakes, AC, and the transmission went out at 45K miles. Based on my experience, I don't think I'll be buying another Chrysler vehicle (or an American one) for a long time, maybe never.

  4. Florian Ryan 2024-10-01

My old Mini-van has crisscrossed the country many times. Despite some issues, I've kept her running. At about 135k miles, the water pump went out, which unfortunately caused me to lose the head gasket. I've heard this is quite common for this year and model. However, I decided not to retire old Betsie and had her repaired. Now, she's running fine again. I've heard that the next thing to go will be the transmission, which usually happens at about 160k miles, according to former owners. But for now, I'm going to keep riding her until she can't ride no more. After that, I'm considering an SUV like an Envoy, Pathfinder, or Volvo.

  5. Moises Schuster 2024-09-25

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that your caravan has 95K on it and comes with some basic features like AC, tilt, 2 built-in baby seats, rear defog, tint glass, and cruise. It also has a 3 liter V6 engine. I wanted to let you know that I installed Bosch Platinum 4's in mine and it increased my MPG by 2. Have a great day!

Hi there! I'm the original owner of this vehicle and I'm happy to report that it has never broken down on me. I've only needed to do regular maintenance, with the exception of an SBS fix and a few leak repairs. I'm still using it to pull my Coleman folding trailer.

  2. Clinton Raynor 2024-10-23

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with this amazing van that I've owned for the past two years. It's been such a reliable vehicle that just keeps on rolling! The transmission is as smooth as new and the engine cranks every time. Plus, the air blows cold which is a huge plus. I bought it with 113000 miles on it and at 140000 it's still ticking along. I always said I was going to drive it until the wheels fell off, but they may never do that!

  3. Dan Fahey 2024-10-16

Great van! It's been very reliable and has good fuel economy. The 3.0 engine has been fantastic. Although the transmission had a few problems early on, the dealership took care of it. The van has only been back to the dealer once. I change the oil every 3,000 miles and it does not burn oil between changes. The exterior is in like-new condition. While the champagne color wasn't my first choice, it's fine considering what's available. I liked it enough to buy another. I've owned three so far.

  4. Tyler Keeling 2024-10-15

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with this van. Unfortunately, the transmission failed before the 7 year/70K warranty was up, and my local dealer only offered a factory rebuilt option. Instead, I decided to have Aamco repair it and pay for the repair myself. I also opted for their

Despite Consumer Reports about the Dodge Caravan, our experience has been very good. The only exception has been the transmission, which is currently giving us trouble at 143,000 miles. We heard that we might have been able to avoid trouble if we had been more attentive to transmission fluid levels after 50,000 miles. Other than that, this car has been very reliable.
