In order to recover, the driver has to stop applying the accelerator and then wait a second or two for the rpm’s to approach idle rates before the transmission will re-engage. It is not repeatable, and is sporadic but always when first driving the car after it has been recently started. This has occurred about 5times in 35k and is happening more often. I have taken it to the dealer multiple times but they dismiss the concern because they haven’t yet been able to repeat it. This bad shift / loss of power is dangerous when trying to initially accelerate and merge into traffic.

Note that the shifter was not moved and did not move - but the transmission pops out of gear. Every time this has been when pulling pretty gently away from a stop sign or intersection.. It has happened both when the car was cold, and also after driving 15 miles. Yesterday was a highly dangerous situation - I was making a left turn out of a gas station across 4 lanes of traffic, and when it dropped to neutral was left rolling across the lanes with revs up and in neutral gear unable to accelerate. This was when it occurred to me that this could cause serious injury or death. I asked about this behavior on a VW owners forum, and so far have one response from another owner saying the same thing has happened to him 15-20 times (also a 2018 R) and his dealer says is "normal". I've not talked to my dealer yet. So does not appear to be unique to me. - No warning indicators - Not taken to dealer yet - Component - dual clutch automatic transmission (DSG) - Safety - Highly dangerous loss of gear/ability to accelerate out of path of oncoming traffic. - Available for inspection on request

Context: Hi there! I'm an older guy with an age-appropriate wife who can drive stick (priceless! It was recommended as part of the pre-nup). I live in the snowiest city in the USA and have owned or leased various cars and SUVs, including BMWs and Audis with AWD. However, my Golf R is unique and very easy to drive. I've had it for 8 months now and have already clocked up 7200 miles on the odometer. The only complaint I have is the ground clearance, which comes into play with the snow drifts that the snow plows leave at the end of my driveway. But, I have no issues driving in the snow since I have snow tires on 17-inch rims for the winter. It's nice to have multiple driving modes, and they genuinely alter the driving dynamics. The car is comfortable to be a passenger in any of the seats. My wife hated to ride in the BMWs and found them needlessly difficult to drive, and I had to agree. The R is fast without being unruly, and it has excellent handling with a comfortable ride. However, if you value your spine and dental work, avoid the potholes! This is my first car with a touch screen, so I'm not an expert, but I'm not a fan. I prefer buttons and knobs since you don't have to take your eyes off the road to work them. The touch screen is overly sensitive for my taste since you do not have to actually touch it to activate it; getting within an 1/8 of an inch will trigger it. The electronics play nice with my iPhone, but that particular feature seems to be the deciding factor for car buying now. The R is pricey when compared to the base GTI, but the price difference is small when looking at a GTI with the same suite of electronics. It's a bargain compared to its Audi S3 fraternal twin and trumps it because of the available M6. The GTI has a very nice ride and handling, but the R is radically better. If you cannot afford an R and have to opt for the GTI, do NOT test drive the R. Update 4/7/2020. 14,000 miles. It still runs great and is lots of fun to drive. It gets 30 mpg on the highway and 24 mpg mixed. The rear brakes needed some attention.The GPS lost connection to the antenna after a commercial car wash, but it was fixed under warranty. I haven't experienced any issues on wet or snowy roads, and I always run snow tires in the winter. I've tried using 87, 89, 91, and 93 octane, and while there was no knocking with the lower grade, I did notice a drop in performance. As of 4/12/2022, the car has 25,000 miles on it. The front brakes needed attention, but otherwise, there were no issues. Recently, I sold the car to my son to replace his aging Audi A4. He's been driving it in our Buffalo winter and loves it. He notes a considerable improvement in performance, but mentions that it's a bit noisier.

I had two GTI's before this car and I absolutely loved them. I decided to go for even more power and I must say, it's more than I need but super fun to drive. The technology in this car is great and I really enjoy driving it. The suspension is sporty so you do feel the road, which I personally like, but it's best to avoid potholes. Update: May 2021 - I still LOVE the car, but I have had to put the suspension DCC in Comfort mode as the potholes have caused damage to two tires and one rim. If you live in an area with good roads, it won't be an issue, but unfortunately, I live in LA...

I cross shopped this with much more expensive cars. Once I started driving it, I was blown away. It's quick, but not incredibly fast. It handles, but isn't the best handling car. That being said, it all blends together into an incredibly balanced and engaging vehicle that makes driving to work a rush. The interior is beautifully finished. The seats are comfortable and the navigation system has some fun features. The stereo is pretty good. I couldn't really point out a fault.

The Golf R is a car that some people may not fully appreciate at first glance. Sure, it may seem like a lot to spend $41K on a VW Golf, and it may not turn heads like some other cars out there. But don't let its unassuming appearance fool you - it's a real powerhouse. For those who value performance, it can easily compete with many so-called sports cars. In fact, if you compare its acceleration, handling, and braking statistics to those of the last generation C5 Corvette, you'll see that it more than holds its own. Plus, it's equipped with the same engine and transmission as the Audi S3 and TTS, but at a much more affordable price point. And unlike some other Similarly, it would be great if the navigation system could be used independently of the radio. Maybe VW could take a cue from Honda on this one.

I have been interested in this vehicle for almost two years. When the 2017 model came out with DCC, I did some more research and finally decided to buy it. The ride home from the dealership on I-95 left a smile on my face that lasted until the next day, when I got an even bigger smile after understanding more about the systems. The car is incredibly quick and goes exactly where you want it to. The seats are very comfortable, even after spending over four hours in the vehicle on the second day. The tech may be a little intimidating at first, as the vehicle has almost every conceivable bit of information at your fingertips. VW's carnet is much better than Onstar. This is a true driver's hatch. However, there is one major design flaw that has resulted in my poor review. Please note that the front lower corners are openings which offer no protection to the components behind. I, along with others, have experienced incidences where roadside debris punctures the radiator resulting in a broken car. I recommend that buyers keep this in mind. Although there are several workarounds for this, it is not something that is part of the original design.
