The Oldsmobile Toronado is a personal luxury car manufactured and marketed by the Oldsmobile division of General Motors from 1966 to 1992 over four generations. The Toronado was noted for its transaxle version of GM's Turbo-Hydramatic transmission, making it the first U.S.-produced front-wheel drive automobile since the demise of the Cord 810/812 in 1937.

The Toronado used the GM E platform introduced by the rear-wheel drive Buick Riviera in 1963 and adopted for the front-wheel drive 1967 Cadillac Eldorado. The three models shared the E platform for most of the Toronado's 26-year history.

The name "Toronado" had no prior meaning and was originally selected for a 1963 Chevrolet show car.

Common 1981 Oldsmobile Toronado problems

The Oldsmobile Toronado, introduced in 1966, was a groundbreaking vehicle as the first front-wheel-drive American production car in nearly 30 years. However, the 1981 model of the Toronado faced several common problems that affected its performance and safety.

  • Throttle Sticking and Sudden Acceleration: One of the most serious issues with the 1981 Toronado was the throttle sticking, causing sudden acceleration. This problem led to numerous recalls and safety concerns, as the car could suddenly accelerate without warning, posing a significant risk to the driver and others on the road.
  • Transmission Issues: The 1981 Toronado also suffered from transmission problems, with the shift control cable disengaging and causing unexpected movement. This issue could lead to difficulties in controlling the car, increasing the risk of accidents.
  • Airbags: Some 1981 Toronado models fitted with TRW airbag modules experienced issues with the airbag component releasing gas into the passenger side of the car frequently. This problem could lead to potential injuries for passengers, requiring recalls to rectify the issue.
  • Seatbelts: The front outer shoulder belt in some 1981 Toronado models would stick into the retractor, causing inconvenience and safety concerns for drivers and passengers. This issue required recalls to ensure the proper functioning of the seatbelts.
  • Faulty ABS System: Many 1981 Toronado units suffered from ABS failure, with some also reporting leaking ABS braking systems and partial loss of braking capability. These problems could significantly impact the car's safety, requiring recalls to address the issues.
  • Fire Risks: Some 1981 Toronado models were known to catch fire due to power steering pump hose leaks. This issue posed a severe safety risk, leading to recalls to prevent potential fires.
  • Loss of Steering Control: The 1981 Toronado was also known for the loss of steering control, which could lead to accidents and safety concerns. This issue required recalls to ensure the proper functioning of the steering system.

These common problems with the 1981 Oldsmobile Toronado led to numerous recalls and safety concerns, contributing to the car's discontinuation in 1992. Despite its issues, the Toronado remains a significant part of automotive history, showcasing the innovation and technical prowess of American car manufacturers during the mid-to-late 20th century.
