The Mazda Capella, also known as the 626 in Europe, North America and Southeast Asia, is a mid-size car that was manufactured by Mazda from 1970 until 2002. Sold in the Japanese domestic market under the Capella name, the vehicle was also commonly known in other major markets as the Mazda 626. Ford, Mazda's partner at the time, also used the Capella platform to create the Ford Telstar and Ford Probe. 4,345,279 of the 626 and Telstar models were sold worldwide.

Designed to compete against Japanese mid-size stalwarts such as the Honda Accord, Toyota Corona, and Nissan Bluebird, the Capella was succeeded by the Mazda6 (Atenza) in 2002.

The car was named after Capella, the brightest star in the constellation Auriga, the sixth-brightest in the night sky and the third-brightest in the northern celestial hemisphere, after Arcturus and Vega.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,PARKING BRAKE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-10-11
  • VIN: 1YVGD22B1N5
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,PARKING BRAKE
  • Summary: 1992 MAZDA 626 DX, ODOMETER 184,580MI. VEHICLE TRAVELING AT APPROX 35MPH ON CITY STREET. AS ANOTHER VEHICLE CUT ME OFF I PRESSED THE BRAKES HARD AT WHICH POINT I HEARD A POPPING SOUND AND BRAKE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR BUT THE CAR WAS NOT STOPPING. AT WHICH POINT I PUMPED THE BRAKES A FEW TIMES AND ONLY HEARD SOME AIR HISSING SOUND. I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE ABLE TO DOWNSHIFT THE MANUAL TRANSMISSION AND USE THE HAND BRAKE TO NARROWLY AVOID AN ACCIDENT. IT TURNS OUT THAT THE BRAKE LINE(OR POSSIBLY MULTIPLE LINES) UNDER THE CAR RUPTURED AND CAUSED COMPLETE LOSS OF BRAKING FLUID(WHICH SPILLED OUT OF THE SYSTEM) AND THEREFORE COMPLETE LOSS OF BRAKING ABILITY. THE CAR IS CURRENTLY DISABLED AND AVAILABLE FOR INSPECTION. THIS SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED AS POSSIBLE DEFECT IN COMPONENTS AND/OR MANUFACTURING PROCESS. *KB

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-11-08
  • VIN: 1YVGE22A7P5
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I AM THE OWNER OF A1992 MAZDA 626 WHICH IS HAVING A TRANSITION PROBLEM INDICATED BY THE FLASHING HOLD LIGHT. POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-11-11
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: MAZDA 626 - AUTO TRANSMISSION - FULL MAINTENANCE HISTORY AT MAZDA DEALER. AUTO TRANSMISSION HOLD LIGHT ISSUES AND LOCKING LUGS IN THE TORQUE CONVERTOR FRAGMENTED INTO THE GEAR SELECTION SECTIONS OF THE AUTO TRANSMISSION. DEALER WARRANTY DID NOT APPLY DUE TOT HE TORQUE CONVERTOR BEING SEEN BY INSURERS AS AN ACCESSORY TO THE TRANSMISSION RATHER THAN A PART OF IT. AFTER SOME $3,500 WE HAVE THE AUTO TRANSMISSION REPLACED, AND IT STILL DOESN'T WORK - IT STARTS TO SELECT 4TH GEAR IN OVER DRIVE TO START ETC. ENDS U THAT THE TRANSMISSION COMPUTER WENT HAYWIRE WHICH SENT THE TRANSMISSION INTO EARLY FAILURE. I THOUGHT I WAS JUST UNLUCKY UNTIL I STARTED REVIEWING THE COSTS FOR TRANSMISSION COMPUTERS ION THE WEB AND FOUND HUGE NUMBERS OF INDIVIDUALS WHO HAD THE SAME EXPERIENCES. MAZDA SHOULD HAVE RECALLED ALL OF THE ABOVE, PARTICULARLY WHERE THEY HAD BEEN THE ONES MAINTAINING THE UNIT OVER THE YEARS. IT IS A VERY POOR PERFORMANCE.

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-01-05
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: I HAVE A 1992 MAZDA 626, WITH AUTOMATIC FRONT SEAT BELT RETRACTORS. ABOUT SIX MONTHS AGO, THE RIGHT SIDE RETRACTOR FAILED, RESULTING IN AN EXTENDED BUZZING OF THE SEAT BELT ALARM, AND A DASHBOARD WARNING LIGHT THAT WOULD NOT GO OUT. MAZDA AGREED TO FURNISH THE PART, BUT LEFT ME WITH THE SIGNIFICANT LABOR COST. NOW THE LEFT SIDE HAS FAILED. I TOOK IT IN TO THE DEALER TODAY, THE SECOND BUSINESS DAY OF THE YEAR, AND THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT ADVISES ME THAT, AS OF THIS YEAR, MAZDA WILL NOT ASSIST IN THIS REPAIR AT ALL. THIS MALFUNCTION MAY PREVENT ME FROM OBTAINING A VALID SAFETY INSPECTION, AND THE COST OF THIS REPAIR WOULD BE NEARLY 1/2 THE PRESENT VALUE OF THE VEHICLE. I THOUGHT THERE WAS SOME NHTSA REQUIREMENT THAT THE MANUFACTURER HAD TO MAINTAIN THE SEAT BELT SYSTEM FROM MALFUNCTIONS, AND MAKE REPAIRS AT THEIR EXPENSE.*AK

Negative 1992 Mazda 626 car reviews

  1. Okey O'Keefe 2024-10-25

This car has been a reliable companion for the past 8 years, and I couldn't be happier with it. Like any vehicle with ~165k miles, it has required some maintenance such as a new radiator, tie rods, valve cover gasket, alternator, and water pump. However, it still runs smoothly and only burns a little oil. While it may not get as many miles per gallon at higher freeway speeds, I still average about 24 mpg with a mix of city and highway driving, which is better than most cars these days.

  2. Gunnar Jacobson 2024-10-08

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share a story with you about my Mazda 626. It was originally my mom's car, but she gave it to me when I got my license 3 years ago. Recently, it finally gave out on me at 335,000 miles! I was pretty bummed because I had this crazy idea that it would last forever. However, I can't complain too much because it had been in my family for 10 years and we never had any major mechanical problems. Just the usual fuel pump and belt replacements in its later years. It wasn't exactly a sudden death either, it was just deemed

I purchased this car back in 2001 from a lovely elderly couple who had only driven it for 20K miles. Unfortunately, after just two weeks, one of the cylinders stopped working properly and I had to frequently change spark plugs and add engine oil due to the idle cylinder burning a lot of oil. Despite taking it to mechanics several times and trying various solutions such as changing all 12 valves and using chemicals to clean the cylinder, the issue persisted. Eventually, I made the decision to sell the car to avoid further expenses. While this experience has made me hesitant to purchase used cars in the future, I am grateful for the time I had with this one.

  4. Cornell Balistreri 2024-07-11

This car has had some issues with the brakes and engine, including a spark plug flying out while driving. However, I am confident in my decision to get rid of it and find a more reliable vehicle. Additionally, I have noticed that it lacks power on the freeway, which is not ideal given its other problems.

  5. Godfrey O'Conner 2024-04-14

Hello! Thank you for sharing your experience with your Mazda 626 5spd. It sounds like you've taken great care of it since you bought it in March 2006 with only 76,000 miles. It's impressive that you've been able to keep it running so well with just regular oil changes and gas. You're getting great gas mileage too, with 30mpg city/34mpg hwy at cruise speeds of 72mph. While it may not have the turbo, it's still a quick and fun car to drive. It's great to hear that everything works as it should, and I hope it continues to serve you well for many more miles to come!

  1. Josiah Wuckert 2024-11-20

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share that I bought my 626 new and have been very happy with it. It's been a very dependable car with very few problems.

  2. Lawrence Schaden 2024-11-02

It's great to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your car! It's always tough to say goodbye to a reliable and fun vehicle like yours. With 178,000 miles on it, it's clear that this car has served you well. It's impressive that you think it could easily go up to 250,000 miles with a little work. It's understandable that you need a truck now, but it's clear that this car has been a great choice for you. The 4 cylinder engine is surprisingly peppy and fuel-efficient, especially if you opt for the manual transmission. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

  3. Leopold Bogisich 2024-08-04

This car is really great! I know it's not a muscle car, but it can accelerate quite well. I've had this car for the last 12 years and at 227,000 miles, it's still going strong. The most money I've put into it was for a paint job, and that's it. I've never had to work on the engine except for plugs and belts. It's a fantastic car!

  4. Gilbert McCullough 2024-07-22

Excellent and comfortable car with great mileage per gallon.

  5. Leonel Stiedemann 2024-07-09

Hi there! I'm excited to tell you about this amazing Mazda! It's a beautiful white color with tan interiors and has 4 doors. The interior is in great condition and it even has the original radio. Plus, it has low mileage at only 124k and has only had one previous owner. Let me know if you have any questions!
