The Chevrolet Cobalt is a compact car introduced by Chevrolet in 2004 for the 2005 model year. The Cobalt replaced both the Cavalier and the Toyota-based Geo/Chevrolet Prizm as Chevrolet's compact car. The Cobalt was available as both a coupe and sedan, as well as a sport compact version dubbed the Cobalt SS. Like the Chevrolet HHR and the Saturn ION, it was based on the GM Delta platform.

A Pontiac version was sold in the United States and Mexico under the G5 name for 2007–2009. It was sold as the Pontiac G4 in Mexico for 2005–2006 and as the Pontiac G5 in Canada for its entire run (where it was briefly known as the Pontiac Pursuit and later Pontiac G5 Pursuit). The G5 replaced the Cavalier-related Pontiac Sunfire. While the Cobalt was available as a 2-door coupe and a 4-door sedan in all markets it was offered in, the G5 was only available as a coupé in the United States while a sedan version was sold alongside the coupé in Canada and Mexico.

As with their predecessors, all Cobalts and its Pontiac equivalents were manufactured at GM's plant in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico and Lordstown, Ohio. The United States Environmental Protection Agency classified the Cobalt as a subcompact car.

Common 2008 Pontiac G5 problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Pontiac G5 2008, common problems with this car include:

  1. A/C Issues: Owners have reported major air conditioning problems with the 2008 Pontiac G5. The A/C may only blow out heat, even when turned off, and switching quickly from cold to hot may only provide temporary relief with cold air for a few minutes. The fan may also operate weaker when blowing cold air, and these issues have worsened over time, making driving in hot weather uncomfortable.
  2. Ignition Key Stuck Due to Failed Shifter: Another common problem involves the ignition key getting stuck due to a failed shifter. This issue has been reported by multiple owners and can be a frustrating experience when trying to start or turn off the vehicle.
  3. Power Steering Assist Loss: Some owners have experienced a sudden loss of power steering assist while driving their 2008 Pontiac G5. This unexpected loss of power steering can pose safety risks and make steering the vehicle more challenging.
  4. Electrical System Recalls: Recalls related to the electrical system have affected the 2008 Pontiac G5. These recalls may involve issues like the ignition switch moving out of the run position, leading to engine shutdown, or problems with the electric power steering motor, resulting in a loss of power steering assist.

These problems highlight various issues that owners of the Pontiac G5 2008 have faced, ranging from comfort and convenience issues with the A/C to more critical safety concerns like power steering failures and electrical system malfunctions. Owners experiencing these problems should seek professional assistance to address and resolve these issues effectively.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-05-31
  • VIN: 1G2AL18F187
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: MY 2008 G5 HAS A STRONG GAS SMELL BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE CAR. I CHECKED FOR RECALLS AND SAW THAT 2008 G5'S HAVE BEEN RECALLED FOR A FUEL LEAK DUE TO A DEFECTIVE FUEL PUMP MODULE BUT ONLY IN HOTTER STATES. I'M IN SC AND WE CERTAINLY SHOULD QUALIFY AS A HOTTER STATE WITH TEMPS IN THE UPPER 90'S IN THE SPRING. GM RECALLED THE '06 AND '07 G5'S IN SC FOR FUEL LEAKS SO THEY SHOULD RECALL THE '08 MODEL TOO SINCE IT HAS THE SAME PROBLEM (RECALL 09V-419) MY CAR HAS ONLY 31,903 MILES ON IT SO I SHOULD NOT BE STUCK WITH THE COST OF REPAIRING AN ONGOING FUEL LEAK PROBLEM THAT GM HAS HAD WITH '06-'08 MODELS. MY MOTHER BOUGHT THIS CAR NEW FROM THE DEALERSHIP AND IT HAS BEEN GARAGE KEPT AND DRIVEN VERY LITTLE. GM SHOULD REPAIR ALL THE 2008 G5'S THAT ARE LEAKING FUEL, NOT JUST THE ONES IN A SELECT FEW STATES. FUEL LEAKS ARE DANGEROUS AND COULD RESULT IN A FIRE IN ANY STATE.

  • VIN: 1G2AL18F387
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: STARTED TO SMELL A STRONG FUEL ODOR IN GARAGE. NOTICED ABOUT A FOOT IN FRONT OF THE DRIVER SIDE REAR TIRE DRIPPING GASOLINE FROM FUEL LINE NEXT TO THE PLASTIC CLIP THERE. THIS IS VERY CLOSE TO THE EXHAUST PIPE AND VERY DANGEROUS. WENT ONLINE AND SAW SEVERAL SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND HOW THERE WAS AN ASSOCIATED RECALL BUT ONLY FOR 5-6 STATES. NOT SURE WHY ONLY THESE STATES WERE LISTED BUT IN LINE WITH MANY OF THE OTHER COMPLAINTS THE PLASTIC CLIP HOLDING THOSE FUEL LINES WAS HOLDING SALT AND BRINE OF THE WINTER MONTHS AND CAUSING CORROSION AT THAT SPOT. TAKING THE CAR IN TO A DEALER TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT AND AM FULLY EXPECTING TO HAVE TO REPLACE THE WHOLE FUEL LINE AT $600-1000 SIMILARLY TO THE OTHER COMPLAINTS I SAW. IF THIS ISSUE WAS ALREADY RECALLED FOR SOME STATES THEN IT NEEDS TO BE RECALLED FOR ALL OF THEM AS IT IS CLEARLY AN ONGOING AND PERSISTENT ISSUE.

I WAS SHOWN THIS BY THE MECHANIC. HE STATED BERRINGS WERE GOING AND I WOULD HAVE TO REBUILD OR REPLACE THE ENGINE. CONFIRMED BY ANOTHER MECHANIC. UPON RETURNING HOME ABOUT 30 MIN LATER I NOTICED FRESH OIL UNDER MY CAR. I TOOK IT BACK AND WAS SHOWN A MAJOR OIL LEAK AT THE TIMING CHAIN COVER. TURNS OUT THE BOLT CAME LOOSE. HE TIGHTENED AND OIL STOPPED LEAKING. THIS WAS PROBABLY THE CAUSE OF BEARINGS GOING OUT. THIS WAS A SUDDEN ISSUE AND NOT OVER A PERIOD OF TIME. THE CAR HAS 45K ORIGINAL MILES ON IT. HOW CAN THIS BE? 10 YEARS OLD BUT ONLY 45K MILES.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-12-03
  • VIN: 1G2AL18F687
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: FUEL LINE RUSTED OUT CAUSING FUEL LEAKAGE. THE BRACKET THAT HOLDS FUEL LINES ALSO RETAINS SALT AND BRINE DEPOSITS AND IS OF POOR DESIGN CAUSING FUEL LINES TO RUST THROUGH ONE SPOT ONLY. IT IS LOCATED A FOOT IN FRONT OF REAR DRIVER SIDE TIRE UNDERNEATH. ABOUT A INCH AWAY FROM EXHAUST. FUEL POURS OUT A STEADY DROP AND PUDDLES UNDERNEATH HOT EXHAUST. THIS IS NOT THE FUEL PUMP RECALL PROBLEM ALREADY LISTED. REPAIR COSTS $951.87 AT DEALERSHIP. LOOKING UNDERNEATH CAR ALL THE LINE WAS RUST FREE EXCEPT THIS FUEL BRACKET AREA. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS TO HAVE FUEL LEAKING ON TO PAVEMENT AND UNDER HOT EXHAUST. AS GAS EVAPORATES ITS FUMES COULD START A FIRE. A PERSON MAY DRIVE FOR MANY MILES WITHOUT NOTICING THE FUEL LEAKING. THE GAS FUMES ENTER THE INSIDE OF CAR. IF A PERSON SMOKES THIS COULD ALSO CAUSE EXPLOSION ALL FROM POOR DESIGN AND NO RECALL TO REPLACE FUEL LINE AND BRACKET. THE FUEL LEAK IS CONSTANT STATIONARY, IN MOTION ON STREET AND HIGHWAY. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-09-30
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: 2008 PONTIAC G5, APPROX. 77,000 MILES. FAILED ANNUAL INSPECTION DUE TO FUEL LEAK IN FUEL LINE, DRIVERS SIDE, REAR, JUST IN FRONT OF TIRE. CLOSE INSPECTION OF FUEL LINE, SHOWED IT TO BE THE FUEL RETURN LINE, THAT HAD RUSTED A SMALL HOLE DUE TO SHIELDING THAT WAS AROUND THE LINE IN THAT AREA RETAINING MOISTURE (SHIELDING WAS FIBERGLASS LOOKING IN APPEARANCE AND COVERED IN SILVER COVERING AND MOST LIKELY IS A HEAT SHIELD AS LIKE ARE ABOUT A FOOT FROM THE EXHAUST PIPE. THIS IS A POOR DESIGN AS IT RETAINS MOISTURE AROUND THE LINE CAUSING IT TO RUST. DEALER ESTIMATE TO REPAIR (REPLACING ENTIRE FUEL LINE WAS $700+. THIS APPEARS TO BE A COMMON ISSUE WITH THESE CARS (CHEVY AND SATURN VERSIONS TOO) SUGGEST DEALERS RECALL THESE CARS AND REPLACE WITH STAINLESS FUEL LINES IF LINES ARE RUSTY.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-08-02
  • VIN: 1G2AL55F287
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I GOT THIS USED CAR LAST YEAR AND I WAS NOT AWARE OF THE RECALL SYSTEM. RECENTLY I CHECKED THE NHTSA WEBSITE AND I SAW THE RECALL NUMBER 14E021000 FOR ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH. I GOT THAT ONE FIXED BUT MY AIRBAG SYSTEM IS ALSO HAVE PROBLEM. AS IT IS MENTIONED IN THE SUMMARY OF RECALL NUMBER 14E021000, THE ISSUE WITH SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH CAN CAUSE AIR BAG ISSUES. I WAS WONDERING HOW CAN I TELL THE DEALER TO TAKE CARE OF THE AIRBAG SYSTEM FOR FREE BECAUSE THE SOURCE OF AIR BAG ISSUE SEEMS TO BE INITIATED FROM THE IGNITION PROBLEM. (FOR WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN, I INSERTED 08/02/2015, THE APPROX TIME THAT I BOUGHT THE CAR. BECAUSE IT WAS LIKE THIS WHEN I GOT THE CAR.)

2008 Pontiac G5 recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2008 Pontiac G5.

2014-04-30
  • Manufacturer: UCI-FRAM Group
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
  • Summary: UCI-FRAM Group is recalling certain LS1328 ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1328, Duralast LS1328, Airtex 1S6097, and Carquest 53-27479, and LS1497 Ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1497, Duralast LS1497, Airtex 1S10961, and Carquest 53-27967, for use on various General Motors model and model year vehicles during repair and replacement of the original ignition switch. The weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the affected ignition switches to move out of the run position, turning off the engine and disabling the air bags.
  • Consequence: If the ignition switch moves from the run position to accessory, the car would stall and the air bags will not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of personal injury to the occupants.
  • Remedy: UCI-FRAM Group has notified its purchasers to quarantine and return all inventory. Any switches already installed in vehicles will be replaced by GM dealers as part of NHTSA recall 14V-047, free of charge. UCI-Fram's purchasers should contact UCI-FRAM Group at 1-800-890-2075. GM vehicle owners requiring additional information on that recall campaign should contact GM at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac) or 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn).
2014-04-10
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2006-2011 Chevrolet HHR, 2007-2010 Pontiac G5, 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice, 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, and 2007-2010 Saturn Sky vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "Off" position.
  • Consequence: If the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "off" position, the vehicle could roll away: (a) for an automatic transmission, if the transmission is not in the "Park" position; or (b) for a manual transmission, if the parking brake is not engaged and the transmission is not in the "Reverse" position. This potential for rollaway increases the risk for a crash and occupant or pedestrian injuries.
  • Remedy: General Motors will notify owners, and for vehicles that were built with the defective ignition cylinder and have not previously had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will replace the ignition cylinder and cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. For vehicles that were built with the redesigned ignition cylinder or had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Chevrolet owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac owners at 1-800-762-2737, and Saturn owners at 1-800-553-6000. General Motors' number for this recall is 14113 for the ignition lock cylinder and key replacement, and 14133 for only key replacements. Note: Until a vehicle has been remedied, owners and operators are advised that when exiting, to be sure that the vehicle is in "Park," or in the case of a manual transmission, that the vehicle is in the "Reverse" position and the parking brake is engaged.
2014-02-10
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on February 10, 2014 that they are recalling 619,122 model year 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, and 2007 Pontiac G5 vehicles. On February 25, 2014, GM increased the recall to include an additional 748,024 model year 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR and Pontiac Solstice vehicles and 2003-2007 Saturn Ion vehicles and 2007 Saturn Sky vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine. On March 27, 2014, GM notified the agency that the defective ignition switches may have been used as service replacement parts on other vehicles, and as a result GM will be recalling certain model year 2008-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, Saturn Sky, and Pontiac G5 and Solstice, and 2008-2011 Chevrolet HHR vehicles. The part numbers for the service parts are 10392423 (a/k/a ACDelco D1461F), 10392737, 15857948, 15854953, 15896640, and 25846762. This expansion represents an additional 823,788 vehicles.
  • Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. An interim notification was issued to owners of 2007 and earlier models on March 10, 2014, informing them of the safety defect. Owners of 2008 and later vehicles will be mailed an interim letter on April 21, 2014. All affected owners will receive another letter once parts are available. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac at 1-800-762-2737 or Saturn at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for the initial recall is 13454 and 14063 for the expansion. GM’s recall number for the vehicles that may have received the replacement parts is 14092. Note: Until the recall repairs have been performed, it is very important that customers remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the vehicle key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. Always wear your seatbelt.

Negative 2008 Pontiac G5 car reviews

  1. Jerrell Ruecker 2024-10-08

I am sorry to hear about your negative experience with GM products. It sounds like you had some issues with your 05 Pontiac G6 and your 08 G5. I understand that you needed a commuter car with better gas mileage, but it seems like the G5 did not meet your expectations. It is disappointing to hear that you had to take it to the shop multiple times and that you experienced issues with the engine, wind noise, rattles, and rough shifting transmission. I hope that you are able to find a car that better suits your needs and provides a more positive experience.

I purchased this car in January with the hope of saving on gas, given the high gas prices at the time. However, I was disappointed with my experience. As an avid weightlifter and a big guy at 6'2 and 260 pounds, I found that my upper body felt cramped in the car due to its size and lack of headroom. I would not recommend this car to bigger guys as it may not be comfortable for them.

I recently said goodbye to my car after owning it for almost two years. While it had decent power, styling, and MPG, unfortunately, it had way too many problems. Here's a list of some of the issues it had: power windows, power door locks, sunroof switch bezel repeatedly fell off, standard transmission shifting problems, water in headlight assembly, and the CD/radio had to be replaced twice (both the original and the replacement failed). Although the car did start and run every day, I believe that the benchmark for a 'new' car should be a little higher than that. I wish I had done more research before purchasing it. My main reason for choosing it was the 'good deal' (rebates). Sorry GM, but I've moved on and just purchased a Mazda.

This car has not met my expectations since the day I bought it. I purchased it to save on gas, but I regret trading in my 2006 GTO for this vehicle.

It's great to hear that you're considering this car! From my experience, this car has been extremely reliable, with only one minor repair needed in the two years that I've owned it. The driving experience is incredibly smooth, and everyone who has driven it agrees. The interior is comfortable and there are no rattles or noise. The back seat feels much larger than it looks, and dips down to give more room for rear passengers. The battery is located in the trunk, which is not a big deal. Additionally, the seats adjust perfectly for shorter drivers like myself, at only 5'2

The dealership was really great and friendly. However, I have been experiencing an issue where the car pulls and roars every time I give it gas or go up a hill. It's not supposed to behave like that. I have taken it to the dealership, but they said there was nothing wrong with it. I will keep taking it back until the issue is resolved.

Haven't spent much other than tires and oil changes. Your vehicle runs great and will continue to do so for another 12 years!

  4. Gabriel Price 2024-09-20

I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you purchased this car back in May '08. I'm glad to hear that you had a positive experience with it! It's great to know that the gas mileage is fairly good, with 25 city and 32 highway. Plus, the price is right, which is always a bonus. It's definitely a great alternative to the Japanese products out there. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

  5. Julian Klein 2024-08-07

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my G5. I purchased it last year with 126k miles and it's still in great condition with no rust underneath. It's a blast to drive and has plenty of power. I actually bought it to save money on gas since my 15 Chevy 2500 only gets 9mpg, but with the G5, I'm getting a whopping 27mpg!
