The Audi S4 is the high performance variant of Audi's compact executive car A4. The original Audi S4, built from 1991 until 1994, was a performance-oriented version of Audi's 100 saloon/sedan. All subsequent S4s since 1997 have been based on the Audi A4; and as the A4 has evolved from one generation to the next, so has the S4.

Like its regular A4 counterpart, all S4 variants have had longitudinally oriented, front-mounted engines. All versions of the S4 have their transmission mounted immediately at the rear of the engine in a longitudinal orientation, in the form of a transaxle, and like all Audi "S" cars, are only available as standard with Audi's quattro all-wheel drive (AWD) system, using a Torsen-based centre differential system. A more powerful internal combustion engine, larger upgraded brakes, firmer suspension, larger wheels, and distinctive sheetmetal, styling clues and badging have always been amongst the many upgrades the S4 receives over its mainstream 100 and A4 siblings. In markets where the even higher-performance Audi RS 4 is not offered, the S4 is the top-of-the-line trim of the A4 family.

A single turbocharged 2.2-litre inline five-cylinder powered the original C4 version, and a 2.7-litre twin turbocharged V6 engine was found in the B5 generation. The B6 and B7 versions shared a common 4.2-litre V8 engine, the first time that a V8 engine was placed in a compact executive car, placing it in direct competition with the BMW M3 (3.2 L inline 6) and Mercedes-Benz C32 AMG (3.2-litre supercharged V6). The B8 generation uses a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 TFSI engine and competed with the BMW 335i, BMW 335i/340i xDrive, and Mercedes-Benz C350. The current B9 generation is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 TFSI engine, with rivals including the BMW M340i xDrive and Mercedes-Benz C450 AMG/Mercedes-AMG C43 4MATIC.

All versions of the S4 have been manufactured at Audi's plant in Ingolstadt, Germany; they are, or have been available as a four-door five-seat saloon and a five-door five-seat Avant (Audi's name for an estate car/station wagon) body styles since the model's inception in 1991. A two-door four-seat Cabriolet (convertible) S4 variant was introduced as part of the B6 and B7 generation A4 lineups. The B8 Cabriolet has now been built off the A5 coupe body style and the "S" variant is marketed under the Audi S5 nameplate.

  • Summary: My MMI 5F module went out right after an oil change service on Nov 12, 2022 I called them as soon as I got home to inform Leader automotive in Normal Il. I was told I would not be able to be seen until January 5 2023 at 1:pm. I then called back a few days later and was able to move that appointment to Dec 16 at 10:00am. I paid $179.11for them to inspect and locate the issue: according to leader automotive the 5f module is bad and needs replaced. In my print out it states it is no longer in production. This part # 8RI-035-746-C is my entire control module that controls all my safety sensors, fluid levels, tire pressure, suspension control, navigation, hands free technology etc... I contacted Audi USA via Facebook and asked why the part is no longer in production. Via Instant messenger on Dec 16 2022 I answered all their questions and was told by Audi USA they would get back to me on in 2-3 days. I have heard nothing from them. When you try and call the hold times are 3.5-5 hours. No warning signs that the unit was failing other than the radio would turn on and off. It would not stay on long enough to reset tire pressure etc... after they inspected it it no longer turns on at all. My car is a 2013 Audi S4 that has had all the required maintenance performed by Audi. It has 50K miles on it. Well taken care of. I was told by [XXX] that the part is no longer made. I could search a junk yard to find the part and they will put it in at a cost of $283.50. She also said it sucked that they no longer make the part. I asked if the entire system could be replaced I was told no as she kinda laughed at my question. I asked about the safety of my car now and again she just stated that it sucked for me. I HAD THE CAR TUNED ADDING SOMEWHERE AROUND 100 HP 6,000 MILES BEFORE THIS HAPPENED AND AUDI SAYS THIS IS WHAT CAUSED THE ISSUE. TO FIX THE SENSOR ERROR CODE P179E00 WAS AROUND $5,000. 00 EVEN THOUGH THERE HAS BEEN A SERVICE BULLETIN OUT FOR THIS PROBLEM FOR MORE THAN A YEAR. AFTER LOOKING AROUND DECIDED TO HAVE AUDI DO THE REPAIR BUT WITHIN AN HOUR OF LETTING THEM KNOW TO GO AHEAD WITH REPAIRS THEY CALLED ME BACK AND TOLD ME THAT IT COULD BE THE WHOLE TRANSMISSION WHEN THEY TESTED THE FLUID IT CAME BACK WITH SOME METAL SHAVING IN IT. THIS WOULD BE A $12,000.00 REPAIR. THEY PERFORMED A FEW OTHER RANDOM THINGS, INSPECT I SHAFT U JOINTS(WHICH WERE FINE), G85 STEERING ANGLE SENSOR BASIC SETTINGS PERFORMED(DIDN'T HELP), POWER STEERING END LOCK ADAPTATION PERFORMED(DIDN'T HELP). SHOP FOREMAN ROAD TESTED AND VERIFIED THE VEHICLE IS NOW OPERATING NORMAL COMPARED TO LIKE VEHICLE, OTHER VEHICLES HAVE THIS SAME PROBLEM, I DON'T WANT MY CAR TO DRIVE LIKE OTHER CARS, I WANT MY CAR TO DRIVE LIKE IT DID BEFORE COMMONWEALTH AUDI PERFORMED A SERVICE I DID NOT ASK FOR OR OK. THE POWER STEERING MALFUNCTION SHOWED UP ON CONSOLE WHEN I WAS GOING AT 35MPH AND I PANICKED BUT MANAGED TO CONTROL THE CAR. I COULDN'T EVEN PARK THE CAR.AS I TOOK THE CAR FROM A DEALER WHO IS 40MILES AWAY FROM MY PLACE I HAD TO CALL THEM BUT THEY MENTIONED THAT THEY CANT TOW THE CAR 40MILES AND GAVE A NEARBY SERVICE ADDRESS. WHEN I CALLED THE NEARBY SERVICE THEY SAID THAT THEY DON'T HAVE ANY LOANERS AND CANT HELP. MY PURCHASE DEALER FINALLY SENT A TOW TRUCK AND I HAD TO GO ALONG WITH THEM AT 9 PM TO THE SERVICE CENTER AND EVEN THEY MENTIONED THAT THEY DON?T HAVE LOANERS AVAILABLE. LUCKILY A LADY THEN JUST DROPPED HER LOANER CAR WHICH WAS GIVEN TO ME. THE SERVICE CENTER MENTIONED THAT THE POWER STEERING MODULE FAILED AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. I WAS SHOCKED TO SEE STEERING FAILURE ON A 4 DAYS OLD AUDI I CLEARLY MENTIONED THE DEALER THAT I WONT BE TAKING THE OLD CAR AND ASKED FOR A NEW ONE. ITS BEEN MORE THAN A WEEK AND THE AUDI RESPONSE WAS SOO SICK THEY CANT FIND A SIMILAR CAR FOR ME. IF THE COLOR MATCHES THEN THE OPTIONS I PREFERRED WOULDN'T OR IF THEY MATCH THE COLOR WOULDN'T. I AM SOO FRUSTRATED THAT EVEN THE SO CALLED PREMIUM BRAND CANT EVEN SATISFY THEIR CUSTOMER WITH WHAT THEY WANT? THEY DECIDED WHAT CAR I SHOULD BE TAKING BY GIVING ME VERY FEW OPTIONS WHICH DOESN?T SATISFY WHAT I WANT EVEN AFTER SPENDING A LOT. THE STEERING FAILURE IS SUCH A LIFE HAZARD AND WOULD HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. SOME SERIOUS ACTION NEEDS TO BE TAKEN ON THIS BUT DON'T KNOW WHOM TO CONTACT. I DON'T KNOW IF THERE ARE ANY REGION WISE HEAD FOR AUDI WITH WHOM I DEFINITELY WANT TO TALK BUT THE ADVOCATE SAYS THAT THEY CANT HELP.   • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Audi A4 and S4 vehicles manufactured February 16, 2012, to October 21, 2014, and 2013-2015 Audi Allroad vehicles manufactured March 12, 2012, to October 21, 2014. Due to an improper algorithm in the air bag control module, if a crash necessitates deployment of the side air bags, a second impact to the front of the vehicle may not command the front air bags to also deploy.
  • Consequence: If the front air bags do not deploy in the event of a secondary impact to the front of the vehicle, there is an increased risk of occupant injury.
  • Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and Audi dealers will update the air bag control unit software, free of charge. The recall began on November 14, 2014. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-822-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 69K5.

    I purchased my Audi S4 brand new in November 2011. Unfortunately, in December of the same year, the radiator broke down. After a bit of discussion, the dealer agreed to replace the coolant free of charge. Recently, on March 3rd, the FM radio stopped working. The screen is blank and there is no sound. Yesterday, the screen went blank for about 20 minutes, but after turning off the engine and waiting for an hour, the FM radio returned to normal. Today, we tried the same thing, but it did not work. While these issues are frustrating, I will continue to document any further problems with my car.

    Just a heads up, the thermostat in the 2011 Audi S4 has been known to be a bit faulty. You can easily find more information on it by doing a quick Google search. I personally had an issue with it, but Audi was kind enough to cover 10% of the $1200 repair cost since I was just over the 50K mile warranty. Other than that, it's a really fun and stylish car to drive!

    I test drove the BMW 3 and 5 series, Infiniti M37, and Mercedes E Class. In terms of pure driving enjoyment, this car beats them all hands down. I cannot wait to drive it every day, it's that good! The acceleration from 0-60 will blow you away. It has a lot of power, yet is very smooth and handles extremely well. It's a head-turner, and I've only had it for a month and have already received many compliments. The inside is very nicely designed, the sound system is incredible, and the navigation is easy to use. The only thing they forgot on this car was the seat memory, which drives me nuts. I know you can get seat memory as an option, I just overlooked it. Check this one out - one test drive and you will feel like James Bond!

    I've been driving my new S4 for four weeks now and I'm absolutely loving it! It's easy and fun to drive both in town and on the highway. I've already put on 2100 miles - 900 in town and 1200 on a long road trip. The fit and finish are top notch, and the blend of performance, luxury/comfort, and mid-size make this car almost perfect as a daily driver. While it doesn't quite have the surgical handling and steering feel of a BMW 3 series, the S4's power, smooth and responsive drivetrain, top-notch build quality and materials, and extra six inches in length over the 3 series more than make up for it. The S4 is a fast, stylish, higher-end performance vehicle that is well worth its higher price.

    In 2008, my wife and I bought a new A4 3.2 6 speed manual, with all the features. We still love it! After over six years of use with no problems, we began to get a warning that one of the headlights was defective. I couldn't see anything wrong (they all illuminated correctly, it seemed) so I took it to the Audi Dealer to get it checked out. While waiting for the fix, my wife and I toured the showroom. That caught the eye of a salesman of course. Interested in a new Audi, he asked? No, just getting our '08 headlight fixed, I answered. '08? Might be time to trade, he suggested. Well, we love our A4 but they don't come with V-6's anymore and we like manual gearboxes. Have you driven a 2.0T? he asked. Yes, and it isn't even close to the V-6. I answered. And I really don't want to spend what a new S4 costs. He showed us a recently traded in 2012 S4 in near mint condition and I bought it after a short test drive. After nearly two years, I still love it. It gets about the same fuel mileage as the '08 3.2 A4 (unless you use the extra power the supercharger provides) and it is simply an absolute joy to drive. I've owned a lot of nice cars over the years but the V-6 S4 is the perfect combination of power, comfort and prestige.
