2017 Acura Rdx problems
The Acura RDX is a compact luxury crossover SUV produced by Acura, a luxury vehicle division of Honda, as the second crossover SUV offering from the brand after the mid-size MDX. Since it was introduced, it shared its platform with the Honda Civic and CR-V.
First generation (TB1/2; 2007)
Originally previewed as the Acura RD-X concept car, the production RDX had its debut at the 2006 New York Auto Show and went on sale on August 11, 2006. A facelifted 2010 model went on sale in August 2009, which featured the addition Acura's "power plenum" grille and a front-wheel drive option.
Engine
The first-generation RDX is powered by a 2.3-litre straight-4 turbocharged gasoline engine, rated at 240 bhp (179 kW; 243 PS) at 6,000 rpm with a torque peak of 260 ft⋅lbf (350 N⋅m) at 4,500 rpm. At the time, this was uncommon among Honda vehicles.
The K23A1 engine has all-aluminum construction, an i-VTEC head, and dual balance shafts. It was also one of the only four-cylinder powered luxury SUVs of its generation. Honda's variable flow turbocharger reduces turbo lag by using a valve to narrow the exhaust passage at low rpm, increasing the velocity of the exhaust flow and keeping the turbine spinning rapidly. At higher rpm, the valve opens to allow more exhaust flow for increased boost. The engine also features a top-mounted intercooler which receives air from the grille, channeled by ducting under the hood.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimated fuel mileage is 19 mpg‑US (12 L/100 km; 23 mpg‑imp) city and 23 mpg‑US (10 L/100 km; 28 mpg‑imp) highway miles per gallon. An updated EPA mileage estimate in February 2007 rated the RDX at 17 mpg‑US (14 L/100 km; 20 mpg‑imp) city and 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km; 26 mpg‑imp) highway.

Common 2017 Acura Rdx problems
The 2017 Acura RDX has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the most widespread issues is the navigation system freezing, which is often caused by a software problem. This issue can be resolved by installing updates for the stereo system software, which most dealerships offer for free. However, some dealerships may charge around $50 for the update installation.
Another common problem with the 2017 Acura RDX is slow gear changes, which is also a software issue. This problem usually occurs around 15,000 miles and can be resolved by updating the transmission software, which most dealerships provide for free. However, some dealerships may charge around $100 for the update installation. In rare cases, damage to the gears in the transmission may occur, but these problems are typically covered under a warranty when the vehicle has low mileage.
Warped brake rotors are another complaint from some 2017 RDX owners, usually around 10,000 miles. This issue can be caused by excessive heat buildup due to heavy braking, and replacing the rotors costs around $550, depending on local labor rates.
The 2017 Acura RDX has experienced issues with its certification labels and acceleration. However, the overall reliability of the 2017 Acura RDX is generally high, and most problems are minor compared to other luxury SUVs on the market, leading to lower repair costs as the vehicle ages.
Some owners of the 2017 Acura RDX have reported a problem where the car suddenly loses power while driving, with no warning or indicator lights on the dash. This issue can be intermittent and difficult to diagnose, as it may not occur at the dealership during testing. Some owners have suggested that this problem may be caused by a vacuum leak or O2 sensor, but dealerships have dismissed these suggestions. In some cases, replacing the fuel pump has resolved the issue, but this may not always be the case.
In summary, the 2017 Acura RDX has experienced common problems with its navigation system freezing, slow gear changes, and warped brake rotors. However, most of these problems are minor and can be resolved with software updates or replacement parts. The overall reliability of the 2017 Acura RDX is high, and most owners have reported positive experiences with the vehicle.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-16
- VIN: 5J8TB3H55HL
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Dashboard warning lights all light up at once. Flickering on and off. Lights turn on and off inside car, it unlocks and locks car on it’s own. Says key is not close to car when trying to turn on car. Alarm goes off randomly once parked and locked.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-20
- VIN: 5J8TB4H79HL
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Keyless Access Control Unit (a.k.a. Smart Power Control Unit) is defective. This is an electronic part and should not have failed. It causes random security alarm triggers, random flashing of exterior lights, clicking noises, and flashing of dash lights. There are plenty of discussion boards about this online with many complaints. A recall should definitely be issued.
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-25
- VIN: 5J8TB4H5XHL
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: Vehicle began jerking while in motion, and all error messages the vehicle has ability to display rotated across the screen, including PO848. Transmission was replaced by a dealer. Vehicle would not start two weeks later. Vehicle towed to dealer. Dealer stated battery and starter were bad. Both of those components replaced by Acura dealer. Within one week, alarm was sounding randomly and clicking noise coming from dash. Dealer is now replacing a control module. This is a safety issue because as it was jerking, I lost control of the vehicle. The car alarm going off for a prolonged time at high decibels puts the hearing of bystanders at risk. Seems the car poses a fire risk as well.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-21
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 5J8TB4H34HL
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: The contact owns a 2017 Acura RDX. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 MPH and attempting to avoid a second vehicle the husband lost control of the steering and crashed into a tree. During the crash the front end of the vehicle was severely damaged but the front driver's side air bag did not deploy. The front passenger side curtain air bag did deploy although no passenger was seated in the vehicle. The vehicle was destroyed and towed away. A police report was taken at the scene. The driver sustained a right hand abrasion that did not required medical treatment. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were not notified. The failure mileage was 91,000.
POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-22
- VIN: 5J8TB3H34HL
- Components: POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The rear brakes squeal as though they are constantly on, brake pads (rear) have not gone down from 4-5 mm in over 10 months whole front pads have been replaced twice and rotors once within the same time period. The constant squealing has shown to overheat the brake system, which in turn overheats the transmission/transfer casing, causing the AT HOT warning light to engage temporarily at high speeds (over 60mph only) as well as minor transmission leaks. Seized calipers have been determined by an Acura dealership service mechanic to be the cause of these issues, and has said it is a common problem. This needs to be recalled if it’s so common.
AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-10
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 5J8TB3H53HL

- Summary: Rear ended other vehicle going about 40 plus miles per hour, then another vehicle rear ended me. Upon impact ( which I have pictures of) my driver side seatbelt released completely unbuckled & dangling , my dash lit up & said airbags deployed. But no airbags deployed. In turn upon impact my sternum hit my steering wheel. It busted the radiator so now my car will not even turn on. It is at a Collision Center awaiting adjuster inspection. Since the radiator busted the other vehicle & myself couldn’t tell if it was steam or smoke coming from the engine. So I turned the car off, it has never turned back on since.
POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-24
- VIN: 5J8TB3H59HL
- Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: I am writing to report a concerning issue with my Acura RDX 2017, which I believe poses a significant safety risk and requires immediate attention from your organization. The problem I encountered while driving jeopardizes the safety of both myself and others on the road. About five days ago, while driving at approximately 20 mph, my vehicle began emitting loud, thunderous sounds, accompanied by intense vibrations that shook the entire car. Additionally, it seemed to struggle when shifting gears, particularly into second or third gear. Despite my careful and gradual acceleration, the car exhibited signs of a malfunction within its transmission system. Furthermore, at around 35 mph, the engine suddenly revved to over 3000 rpm, causing the vehicle to accelerate without any input from me. This acceleration occurred even though my foot was not on the gas pedal, making the car difficult to control and putting me at risk of colliding with other vehicles or objects. The unpredictability of these incidents is deeply alarming and could lead to serious accidents if not addressed promptly. I purchased this vehicle in December 2023 and have maintained it according to the manufacturer's recommendations. However, when I inquired about the timing belt at the dealership, I was assured that it had passed inspection. Despite this, the recent malfunctions suggest a more serious underlying issue that needs immediate attention. Crucially, there were no warning lights, messages, or other indications of a problem prior to these incidents, underscoring the sudden and unexpected nature of the issue. I urge the NHTSA to investigate this matter urgently and thoroughly. I request that you initiate a recall of affected vehicles and implement necessary repairs to address the identified defects. Swift action is essential to ensure the safety of all motorists who may be affected by this issue.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-16
- VIN: 5J8TB4H74HL
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: I own a 2017 Acura RDX that I purchased new in 2017. My vehicle only has 45587 miles on it. I've noticed in this last year, that it is very hard to see at night. When driving at night I have to use my high beams to be able to see ahead and drive safely. Yesterday(10/16/2023) when driving home around 8:30 at night I was pulled over by a state trooper for driving with my high beams on. Luckily enough I only received a warning to get my headlights fixed and not a ticket. This incident prompted me to call the dealership to see how much it would cost to have my headlights replaced. I was told it would cost $1200 to $1500 per headlight plus labor to replace them. My headlight housing is (pealing & cracking) and the LED bulbs appear dimmer than they should be.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-10
- VIN: 5J8TB4H78HL
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Part - Control Unit, Smart Power - Acura 38320-TX4-A31 has been diagnosed as defective causing major electrical issues. Dealer says it affects the safety features of the car yet they can't get a replacment part. Afraid to allow my wife to drive not knowing if the safety features we paid for actually work. Air bags? Electrical breakdown during operation? A simple search finds it is a common problem with Acura and Hondas of this time period.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-24
- VIN: 5J8TB4H74HL
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,LANE DEPARTURE
- Summary: While driving, all ADAS and Emmision System malfunctioned AND went offline (errors appear on main control panel and these features were no longer working). Fortunately, the car was otherwise still drivable without these features. It was brought to a local Acura dealer and they performed a software update which fixed the problem (at least so far after a week of driving).
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-12-28
- VIN: 5J8TB4H5XHL
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE
- Summary: Since we have had the car we have had multiple issues with the car jerking and shifting hard after driving in S mode then going to standard mode. Dealership told us the transmission is "sensitive" in our model year and if we go 1 mile overdue for a transmission fluid flush we will have shudder/jerking/ hard shifting. (we have changed the transmission fluid 1-2x since have had the car, which is within range of recommended). Last episode- battery was dead, jumpstarted and car jerking at low speeds to the point I did not drive it and had it told. We were also told their was a short in the circuit board that controlled acuralink and what charged the battery. Jerking transmission related per dealership. lastly the sound for the blind spot monitoring is intermittently not working.
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-26
- VIN: 5J8TB3H58HL
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Keyless entry system failed at under 50k miles. When this Keyless Access Unit fails, you cannot start the car and the powertrain. The only way to resolve is to have the car towed to the dealership and have the part orders and installed at over $800. In a worst case scenario, the driver could be stranded in unsafe conditions -- weather extremes (heat or cold) or parking at the side of the freeway unable to restart the car. I believe this is a huge safety issue and too common for this model Acura. This is clearly a critical system component that has failed far before it should. There is no way to turn the vehicle on as this is a keyless entry vehicle.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-05
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 5J8TB3H53HL
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The car accelerated rapidly when I came to a stop. When I brought it to, the dealership they found 3 problems with the transmission. First, the transmission had overheated, there were problems in the clutch assembly, and I don't know the third.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-27
- VIN: 5J8TB4H31HL
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: While driving, the car slips into manual gear shift and is slow to accelerate and it will have a hard shift of gears from 20 - 60 mph. The emissions check and transmission indicator lights are on. I can not drive the car safely because of the jerks of gear shifts or the slow acceleration when driving on roads and highways. The car is being inspected for transmission issues with concerns that there is severe damage requiring a replacement of the transmission.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FIRERELATED PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-06-24
- Number Of Deaths: 1
- Crash: 1
- Fire: 1
- VIN: 5J8TB4H54HL

The contact stated her mother was driving out of her driveway when she drove into an embankment and the vehicle was stuck. The contact stated the police officers informed her, that the cause of the fire was due to the driver attempting to drive out of the embankment and reverse out of the embankment several times. The vehicle had caught on fire and the driver passed away in the vehicle as she was unable to exit the vehicle. The fire department was called and extinguished the fire. The contact stated she was awaiting the police department and fire department report. The vehicle was towed to the police towing lot. The failure caused was not determined by the insurance company, independent mechanic, or dealer. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-23
- VIN: 5j8tb4h33hl
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Transmission slips and shifts hard causing the car to lurch foreward. It also loses power when accelerating.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-06-10
- VIN: 5J8TB4H59HL
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: On Friday May 10, 2022, as I was merging from a local road to the highway, I tried to accelerate to complete a safe merge however, the car stated loosing power and jerking, I had to floor the accelerator to get the power needed to avoid a collision with the vehicle behind me. About 1 mile later, the care started loosing power again and cut out. I restarted and continued driving, a few yards later, the car jerked and all the warning lights came on. Given the serious safety issue and the fact that I happened to be near the an Acura dealership, I slowly drove to that dealership. Since it was close to the end of the business day on a Friday, I knew that I'd have to wait until the next day or week to get a report on the problem. I previously filed two complaints on June 19, 2019 and July 28, 2019, on this same issue. I spoke with a representative of Honda several times and they assured my that the problem was fixed after the dealer kept this car for several weeks to work on it. At this juncture, given that this is an issue that could cause serious harm, I am ready to sell this car. Honda needs to fix this.

The navigation system may not be the most intuitive and can be a bit clunky, but overall everything else is quite good. The factory installed car alarm is the only downside so far, as it tends to go off when loud cars pass by, which can be a bit of a nuisance. I did try to get the settings adjusted at the dealer, but unfortunately, they required me to leave the car there for the day just to make the adjustment, which was not feasible for me. Despite this issue, I am still enjoying the car.
-
This car has met my expectations so far. It's a great value, which is why I chose it. I was looking for a small SUV with good MPG and some creature comforts, but not too small. Although my base model with Acura Watch Plus doesn't have navigation, it still has everything I need. The acceleration is good and it has the power I need. I was previously driving a $60k Audi Q5 as a loaner, which was an amazing car, but I couldn't afford it. For the price difference (I paid $34,000), the Acura RDX is a great option. *Update - my previous review still stands. I now carpool with three teens and they find the car comfortable. *Update 11/22/18 - The car is perfect for my needs. It may not be the fanciest car out there, but it has everything I need. The only thing I would change is to be able to program all doors to unlock when I unlock one. The pleather seats hold up well to my German Shepherd and Corgi mutt.

We had a great experience at Curry Acura in Scarsdale, NY. We were considering both the Acura and Lexus NX, but since we've always owned Honda and Acura, we were leaning towards Acura. The car feels solid and is easy to see out of, plus it sits higher than my TL, making it better for traffic.
-
My SUV has been reliable and comfortable for the past 3.5 years and 20,000 miles. Although the navigation and tech voice interface have been a bit of a challenge, the V6 engine is smooth and peppy, and the gas mileage is acceptable at an average of 18 mpg. However, it's time for a replacement and I have decided to go for a Volvo XC60 T8. I am absolutely loving it, it's a whole different level!
-
I recently upgraded from a 2013 CRV to the 2017 RDX and I must say, I am thoroughly impressed! The ride is incredibly comfortable and quiet, with ample leg room both in the front and back. The V6 engine is exceptionally smooth and provides a great deal of power. The advanced package comes with a host of safety features that I absolutely love. The navigation system is top-notch and I appreciate the ability to send destinations from my phone directly to the car's navigation system. Additionally, Acura link is a great feature that allows me to find destinations while driving. The only minor downside is that the app does not offer a remote start option and the steering wheel is not heated. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with my purchase!

This vehicle has a lot of great features to offer! The cabin is spacious and comfortable, the ride is smooth, and the V6 engine is impressive. The technology is also top-notch, although the dual-screen radio/nav design could use some improvement. Unfortunately, after driving for only 5 to 7K miles, the brakes start to screech, which is quite disappointing. It's not something you would expect from a car of this caliber, especially from a brand like Acura. After doing some research, it seems that this is a known issue. Overall, it's a shame that such a great car is let down by this problem.
Abdullah Oberbrunner 2024-06-22
The Nav system can be frustrating with multiple steps to perform even the simplest function. The voice recognition system can be unreliable at times, which can be amusing. The phone system is also not the best. However, if you want a hassle-free navigation experience, using your own phone might be the best option. The front seats are a bit short and hard, which can feel like sitting on bleachers. The ergonomics could be improved, but overall, the car is still a great choice.
Xander O'Kon 2024-05-18
Even though we got the base RDX model, I was really surprised to see that the CRV from Honda (Acura's sister company) had some features that the RDX did not. From my perspective, the base RDX should have more features than the highest-end CRV considering Acura's higher-end positioning. Overall, we like the car, but we are just disappointed with how Acura cut corners.
Dejuan Bechtelar 2024-05-16
The brake system issue that arose after 2 weeks of leasing has not been resolved by the dealer. Additionally, the car's light doors and noisy operation give the impression of a cheaply made vehicle.
Deshawn Bahringer 2024-05-08
I bought this car with 10k miles after reading lots of reviews. The engine is powerful and the seats are super comfortable. It also has great acceleration and a good amount of space inside when you need it. Although it is kind of hard to park in tight places like parking garages as it’s kind of wide, and turning radius isn’t great. The safety features sound good and the blind spot works great though as does the emergency braking. It performed ok in the snow, not amazing or as good as my Subaru did. However, there are a few issues that I have encountered such as the transmission not being very fun, sport mode pretty much unusable, and a weird rattle from the steering wheel. But I just found out that there is a service bulletin on it from Acura so I will need to get that fixed. It also makes a squeaking noise when driving at slower speeds in front brake area and pulls slightly to the right when driving, which might just be an alignment issue. For the price, I was expecting less issues. Overall, I think this car would be a good vehicle for some people, just not for me.
