The Acura MDX is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV with three-row seating produced by the Japanese automaker Honda under its luxury Acura division since 2000. First generation (YD1; 2001)
Derived from Honda's Global mid-size platform which underpins cars like the Honda Accord, Acura TL, TSX and Odyssey, it is powered by a J35A3 3.5 L SOHC 24 valve V6 engine with VTEC. Curb weight is 4,451 lb (2,019 kg), with a 106.3 in (2,700 mm) wheelbase and 8 in (200 mm) of ground clearance. The cargo floor can flip up to provide two additional seats. The vehicle is designed to hold 7 passengers, but the third row seats are small and only seat two, in contrast to the Odyssey and Pilot whose third row holds three passengers.
The vehicle features an automatic four wheel drive system (named VTM-4) that engages during off the line acceleration as well as when wheel slippage is detected. Additionally, the system offers a lock mode which can be activated and operated at low speeds and provides permanent 4WD and the equivalent of a locked rear differential; designed for climbing steep hills and getting out of stuck situations. To reduce drivetrain noise and increase fuel efficiency, the system runs as front wheel drive during normal cruising. The VTM-4 AWD system in the MDX has the same design as the VTM-4 systems found in the Honda Pilot and Honda Ridgeline. It is different than Honda's "RealTime AWD" system in the Honda CR-V and other models in that it can lock and it attempts to predict when traction will be lost and apply power to all four wheels before slippage occurs (by monitoring throttle inputs).
The navigation system and DVD entertainment system (also popular on other Honda/Acura models, such as the CR-V and Odyssey) options were mutually exclusive in the 2002 model. Both could be ordered at the same time since the 2003 model. The navigation option comes with a backup camera since the 2003 model. Since 2005, the navigation system featured information from Zagat about restaurants and other points of interest. The 2003 model was rated as Ultra Low Emission Vehicle. The first two model years' 3.5-liter V6 engine produces 240 hp (179 kW) and 245 lb⋅ft (332 N⋅m) of torque from 3000 to 5000 rpm. For the 2003 model, the engine was improved to produce 20 hp (15 kW) more power than the earlier models, and the wheel designs were updated. The 2004 through 2006 engine received a modest increase in power and produces 265 hp (198 kW) and 253 lb⋅ft (343 N⋅m). The 2004 model is credited with a top speed of 137 mph, and a 0-60 time of 7.1 seconds. The 2004 model features dual tail pipes instead of the single pipe in earlier models, side curtain airbags, new head lights and tail lights, and new wheels. Some chrome trimmings on the 2004 model use matte finish to distinguish from the polished shiny finish on earlier models. Little changed for the MDX during the 2006 model year with a few minor revisions to the vehicle's chrome and faux wood interior trim which could now be had with a dark grey wood (as opposed to reddish wood on earlier models), and also a black dash and steering wheel in tan interiors.

- Summary: There is a paracytic battery drain causing new batteries to fail. Troubleshooting says Hands Free Link system may be reason for drain/ dead battery. Or, the Navigation system. There are endless electrical issues within 5 fuse boxes. I’ve done this manually, it’s slow. I know a diagnostic meter would help! So, I’ve installed a battery switch inside car. Must turn off each night! You’d think I’d have a mobile battery charger by now. But thankfully road side service has been a life saver. Although, I was not permitted to sign up for ERS with my insurance after so many battery calls for a year or more. AAA same! It’s ridiculous. Today, had to call ERS again. Ugh. Fortunately I’ve been reinstated. Its been slow-like-molasses-paced.. One fuse disconnected after another. This leaves the vehicle operating without the necessary compenents, helpful features. Examples: x miles per gallon of gas driving city/freeway. . The stereo system completely out, no back up camera, and no Navigation system. All disconnected fuses. No, I don’t have the resources to buy a diagnostic or pay a mechanic $200-300. I’ve been dealing with this nightmare for the last year++. Thankfully, YouTube shows 2006 Acura MDX, Touring series w this drain problem. A huge help! It’s an older car with 240K miles, needs 4 new tires, alignment, both headlamps replaced, . Plus, somehow the rear view mirror got unhooked, torn off, consequently, I’m without the rear back up view. It’s stupid, I realize. Looking at it in hind sight, yes, it’s ridiculous!

THEY PROCEEDED TO DO BREAKDOWN OF MY CAR AND TOLD ME I NEEDED A NEW WIRING HARNESS AND CAPACITOR THAT WOULD COST OVER $1500. THE AIR BAG DEPLOYED, SMOKE CAME OUT & THE ALARM WENT OFF UNTIL A PASSERBY DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY. I COULDN'T STAND UP FOR A FEW MINUTES. MY INSURANCE CO. DECIDED IT WAS TOTALLED & HAD IT TOWED TO OUR HOUSE INSTEAD OF A BODY SHOP, THEN ONLY GAVE ME ITS BOOK VALUE. I STILL HAVE MANY BRUISES ALL OVER MY BODY AND MY NOSE BLED FOR A WHILE AND WAS SWOLLEN FOR A WEEK. THE SEAT BELT CUT INTO MY NECK AND ITS IMPACT LEFT SEVERE BRUISES ON MY CHEST. THE IMPACT MADE BOTH MY REPLACED KNEES BRUISE AND HURT. I HAD LOWER BACK FOR MANY DAYS. POHANKA ACURA DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THIS IS AN ACURA COMPANY ISSUE. GOOGLE DIDN'T SHOW ANY RECALLS ON ACURA MDX ACCELERATORS. BUT, MANY PEOPLE HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM I HAD WITH THEIR MDX. WHILE BRAKING, THE CAR GOES FASTER INSTEAD. ON 3/11, AND AFTER MANY LEFT MESSAGES TO ACURA, ACURA FINALLY CALLED. I REQUESTED THAT SOMEONE WILL CHECK THE ACCELERATOR, B4 IT WAS TOWED AWAY. HE SAID I NEEDED TO FIX THE CAR AND BRING IT BACK TO ITS ORIGINAL NEW STATE. AFTER THAT, ACURA WILL THEN LOOK AT IT AND DETERMINE IF THE ACCELERATOR HAD ISSUES. I'M VERY RELIEVED I DIDN'T DIE. I'M STILL NOT SURE IF I MIGHT DEVELOP ANY PERMANENT PHYSICAL PROBLEMS FROM THIS ACCIDENT. THE SHOCK, TRAUMA AND INJURIES WERE UNNECESSARY. I'M ALSO VERY GLAD I DIDN'T KILL ANYONE. I WOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN ABLE TO LIVE WITH MYSELF. I WASN'T PREPARED TO BUY ANOTHER CAR NOW. I WAS PLANNING ON KEEPING IT FOR AT LEAST 2 MORE YEARS. VEHICLE SETS MORE THAN TWO DAYS AND THE BATTERY IS DRAWN DOWN ENOUGH THAT VEHICLE NOT ONLY NOT START, BUT YOU CAN'T EVEN GET VEHICLE OUT OF PARK POSITION SO YOU CAN BE TOWED OR PULLED OFF THE ROAD SAFELY UNLESS YOU DRAG IT LOCKED UP. THE DEALER INFORMED US THAT THEY COULDN'T REPLACE THE AIRBAG DUE TO AN UNKNOWN WIRING OBSTRUCTING THE AIRBAG (EXHIBITS A, B). THEY WANTED TO CUT THE WIRING FOR AIRBAG REPLACEMENT. HOWEVER, THEY WILL NOT TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG. WE REFUSED THEIR IDEA OF CUTTING THE UNKNOWN WIRE, BECAUSE IT MAKES NO SENSES WHEN NO ONE KNOWS THE OUTCOMES IS GOING TO AFFECT VEHICLE SAFETY OR FUNCTIONALITY. WE ARE THE ORIGINAL OWNERS AND TO OUR BEST KNOWLEDGE NO ONE HAS EVER SERVICED THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG. THUS, IT IS REASONABLE TO SUSPECT THIS MIGHT BE A RARE DEFECT. THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE FENDER OF THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE AND THE REAR TAILGATE OF THE OTHER VEHICLE WERE DAMAGED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC (MYERS), BUT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE BODY DAMAGE OF THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED PER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 12V573000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM). THE CONTACT NOTIFIED THE MANUFACTURER AND WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO SINCE A DIAGNOSTIC TEST WAS DONE AND THE TECHNICIAN COULD NOT FIND THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. I AM JUST MAKING THIS COMPLAINT BECAUSE THE DEALER STATES WE HAVE TO PAY 5000 DOLLARS TO HAVE IT REPLACED. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE I KNOW THAT A TORQUE CONVERTER CAN LOCK UP AND IN A AWD VEHICLE THAT WOULD MOST CERTAINLY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. I HAVE YOUNG CHILDREN AND ALL THE DEALER SAYS IS TO KEEP HAVING THE TRANSMISSION FLUID CHANGED OR PAY 5000 TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION. I ALSO HAVE A HONDA ACCORD THAT HAD RECALLS FOR EXPLODING AIRBAGS AND IT TOOK MONTHS FOR THEM TO FINALLY GET IT IN FOR THE RECALLS. (Dorman) is recalling certain Accelerator Pedal Assemblies part numbers 699-114 and 825-5029-1, sold as replacement parts for 2003-2006 Acura MDX, 2004-2008 Acura TL and TSX, 2003-2007 Honda Accord, 2005-2006 Honda CR-V, 2007-2011 Honda Element, 2005-2008 Honda Pilot and 2006-2014 Honda Ridgeline vehicles. The rotating portion of the accelerator pedal assembly may bind. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 124, "Accelerator Control Systems."
- Consequence: If the accelerator pedal binds, the engine may not quickly return to idle after the pedal is no longer pressed, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Dorman will notify owners, and qualified service facilities will replace the affected accelerator pedal assemblies, free of charge. The recall began December 9, 2019. An electrical capacitor may have been damaged during the manufacturing of the Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) control module causing intermittent, automatic, minor brake application. However, if the driver applies the brakes while the VSA is malfunctioning, the vehicle may come to an abrupt stop. Additionally, due to a loose ground connection, certain model year 2005 Pilots have a VSA system that may apply partial brake force, without the illumination of the brake lights, whether or not the driver is using the brakes.
- Consequence: Sudden inadvertent braking, especially without illumination of the brake lights, may increase the risk of a vehicle crash.

I really wanted a TSX, but unfortunately, with the kids and boat, it became impossible. However, I test drove this vehicle and was pleasantly surprised. It handles almost as well as my Audi A6 (believe it or not!). It's also very comfortable. I wouldn't recommend the DVD package as you can buy each kid their own for a lot less. However, the NAV is definitely worth it. The voice recognition is surprisingly good and there's plenty of power. The Bose system is okay, but definitely get the Acuralink for iPod as it works great. Although there are a few things that don't make sense, such as the lack of lighted controls on the steering and the placement of the clock, the next version is expected to be better. Overall, it's a solid purchase.

Hi there! I came across this amazing truck on the highway and I just had to find out more about it. I was immediately drawn to its stylish look, and after doing some research, I discovered that it's also one of the safest SUVs out there, thanks to its wide wheel base. When my husband and I went to test drive it, I didn't even need to get behind the wheel to know that I was in love with it. And when I finally picked it up after ordering it in my favourite colour, I enjoyed driving it more than ever before! It's perfect for family vacations, with plenty of room for the kids, and it's super easy to clean too. By the way, my previous vehicles were a 77' Camaro, 84 Trans Am, and a 93' Camry. This truck is definitely my favourite so far!

This is the third Acura I have owned. It's a great vehicle! It's fun to drive and handles well in ice and snow. The sound system is fantastic. Overall, I am very happy with the MDX. This is my first SUV, and I wouldn't go back to a car after driving this vehicle.

I was attracted to purchasing this vehicle due to its ease of driving and handling. In May of this year, I bought a new Toyota 4Runner 2006 before purchasing the MDX. In my opinion, the 4Runner is a better-built vehicle overall. Although the MDX has a slightly cheaper interior, I found the cover of the door knob actually moves a little bit instead of being fixed to the door, which is a small but annoying defect. Additionally, the interior looks cheaper compared to Toyota. Unfortunately, the back door of the MDX cannot close completely without slamming it, which can be a pain. If you try to be a little bit gentle on the car, then the door won't close properly. In comparison, the 4Runner has an automatic door closer, and the quality is awesome.

I have owned this car for 12 years and have enjoyed driving it every single day. Even after driving it for 130,000 miles, the engine still hums like new. Every time we have made the trip to Florida from the northeast, it has felt like cruising down the highway in an easy chair. Maintenance has never been an issue, as regular fluid changes have kept the car in great operating condition. If you're looking for a fantastic preowned SUV, I highly recommend this vehicle.

Although the car is comfortable and roomy, it is disappointing to experience issues with the torque converters, transmissions, water leaks, cheap broken plastics, and ripped leather seats after only 4 years. The torn gaskets around the doors are also concerning. These issues have led me to reconsider purchasing another Acura product in the future.

I bought my car new and got a great deal because the new model year was arriving and the dealer wanted to unload. It has been very reliable, with an average mileage of around 19, even with a lot of highway driving. The acceleration is not bad at the low end, but the handling can feel a bit mushy, especially when taking aggressive corners. The interior space is adequate, with relatively roomy rear seating, but the third row seat can be a bit of a torture chamber for anyone over ten years old. Overall, I have found the car to be a bit lackluster and boring. However, I previously owned a Nissan Murano, which was a much more exciting car to drive. Recently, I purchased a Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, which is one hairy ride, although the gas mileage is not great.
