2006 Chevrolet Hhr problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet HHR (an initialism for Heritage High Roof) is a retro-styled, high-roofed, five-door, five-passenger, front-wheel drive wagon designed by Bryan Nesbitt and launched by the American automaker Chevrolet at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show as a 2006 model.

The HHR shares the GM Delta platform with the Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5, and Saturn Ion. Chevrolet also marketed a panel van variant of the HHR beginning in 2007. Assembled in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico and marketed throughout North America, production of the HHR ended in May 2011. The HHR was replaced in the U.S. by the Chevrolet Captiva Sport. This was a rebadged version of the Opel Antara. However, the Captiva Sport was only available as a fleet vehicle and was not available new to the general public.

Design

The vehicle's design was inspired by the late-1940s/early 1950s Chevrolet cars and trucks, specifically the 1947 Chevrolet Suburban and Advance Design pickups, with large, square fender flares and a hemispherical grille. The design of the HHR has been credited to Bryan Nesbitt who was a former designer at Chrysler where he was the lead designer of the Chrysler PT Cruiser. Nesbitt was recruited by GM to join its design staff and served for a time as the chief designer of the Chevrolet brand. The HHR had a cargo-carrying capacity of 62.7 cubic feet (1.78 m3). All models had a flat-load floor (passenger models have 60/40 split bench) and fold-flat front passenger seat. For the 2007 model year, it was available in four trim levels; LS, LT, 2LT, and Special Edition. A panel van variant was also made available in 2007 for only the LT trim and became available on all trim levels in 2008. A "Half Panel" (RPO code AA5) rear quarter window delete option was available in the 2008 to 2010 model years.

Common 2006 Chevrolet Hhr problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the Chevrolet HHR 2006, several common problems have been reported. Here is a detailed list of these issues:

  1. Oil Leak from Oil Cooler O-Rings: Owners have experienced oil leaks from the oil cooler due to faulty O-rings. This issue can lead to various warning lights appearing on the dashboard, including the power steering message, security light, and ABS light. Additionally, the dash gauges may stop working, and the transmission may fail to shift properly. It is crucial to inspect the wire harness around the oil cooler for any damage or loose connections.
  2. Cam Sensor Codes: Some owners have reported issues with cam sensors, which could contribute to the power steering failure and dashboard gauge malfunctions. While cam sensor problems may not seem directly related to these issues, they can impact the overall performance of the vehicle. Checking the wiring of the cam sensors is essential to ensure proper functionality.
  3. Transmission Control Module Failure: In cases where the transmission control module fails, owners may experience issues with the transmission not shifting correctly. Replacing the transmission control module is necessary to resolve this problem, which can be costly.
  4. Throttle Body Malfunction: Problems with the throttle body can cause rough engine running, low idle, stalling, and trigger a check engine light with throttle body-related codes. In most instances, cleaning the throttle body is not sufficient, and replacement is required for proper functioning.
  5. Coolant System Concerns: The coolant system in the Chevrolet HHR 2006 may require more frequent flushing than recommended for other vehicles. Neglecting proper coolant maintenance can lead to issues such as heater core or radiator blockages. Flushing the coolant system regularly can help prevent these problems.
  6. Gas Cap Issues: A loose or worn gas cap can trigger an illuminated check engine light due to an EVAP system problem. While this issue may not affect the vehicle's performance, it can lead to increased fuel consumption and harmful vapor emissions. Ensuring the gas cap is properly sealed and in good condition is essential.

These common problems reported by owners of the Chevrolet HHR 2006 highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any warning signs to ensure the vehicle's optimal performance and longevity.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-10
  • VIN: 3GNDA13D16S
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: The (EPS) system in my 2006 Chevy HHR has experienced multiple malfunctions. The power steering suddenly cuts out without warning while driving at both low and high speeds, making it extremely difficult to steer, especially when attempting to turn or change lanes. This failure happens intermittently, and the EPS motor is suspected to be the root cause. I have replaced fuses and relays, but the issue persists. This system is available for inspection upon request. This malfunction poses a severe risk to my safety and the safety of others. When the power steering fails, it becomes nearly impossible to turn the vehicle, which is especially hazardous during routine maneuvers such as lane changes or turns at intersections. The sudden loss of steering capability, especially at higher speeds, has left me vulnerable to potential collisions. Given the unpredictability of the issue, it could easily lead to a fatal accident if it occurs while navigating tight curves or avoiding road hazards. The problem has been confirmed by a certified mechanic, who validated that the power steering system is malfunctioning and recognized the danger it poses. The mechanic advised that this issue is prevalent in vehicles of this make and model & suggested filing a formal complaint to prompt further investigation by the manufacturer. To date, the veh has been thoroughly examined by an independent service center. They confirmed the malfunction of the EPS system but were unable to fully resolve the issue through standard repairs like fuse or relay replacements. A "Power Steering" message illuminates on the dashboard. A few seconds later, the power steering system fails completely, leaving the vehicle almost impossible to control. These warnings have been intermittent, but their frequency has increased over time. The first occurrence was about a year ago, Given the ongoing danger and prevalence of this issue among other 2006 Chevy HHR owners, I am requesting that GM initiate a formal recall.

THANK YOU FOR TAKING TIME TO READ THIS REPORT. PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE TO CONTACT ME IF YOU WOULD LIKE ADDITIONAL DETAILS OR IF I MAY CLARIFY ANY ITEM.

2006 Chevrolet Hhr recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the 2006 Chevrolet Hhr.

2014-04-30
  • Manufacturer: UCI-FRAM Group
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
  • Summary: UCI-FRAM Group is recalling certain LS1328 ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1328, Duralast LS1328, Airtex 1S6097, and Carquest 53-27479, and LS1497 Ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1497, Duralast LS1497, Airtex 1S10961, and Carquest 53-27967, for use on various General Motors model and model year vehicles during repair and replacement of the original ignition switch. The weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the affected ignition switches to move out of the run position, turning off the engine and disabling the air bags.
  • Consequence: If the ignition switch moves from the run position to accessory, the car would stall and the air bags will not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of personal injury to the occupants.
  • Remedy: UCI-FRAM Group has notified its purchasers to quarantine and return all inventory. Any switches already installed in vehicles will be replaced by GM dealers as part of NHTSA recall 14V-047, free of charge. UCI-Fram's purchasers should contact UCI-FRAM Group at 1-800-890-2075. GM vehicle owners requiring additional information on that recall campaign should contact GM at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac) or 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn).
2014-04-10
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2006-2011 Chevrolet HHR, 2007-2010 Pontiac G5, 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice, 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, and 2007-2010 Saturn Sky vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "Off" position.
  • Consequence: If the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "off" position, the vehicle could roll away: (a) for an automatic transmission, if the transmission is not in the "Park" position; or (b) for a manual transmission, if the parking brake is not engaged and the transmission is not in the "Reverse" position. This potential for rollaway increases the risk for a crash and occupant or pedestrian injuries.
  • Remedy: General Motors will notify owners, and for vehicles that were built with the defective ignition cylinder and have not previously had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will replace the ignition cylinder and cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. For vehicles that were built with the redesigned ignition cylinder or had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Chevrolet owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac owners at 1-800-762-2737, and Saturn owners at 1-800-553-6000. General Motors' number for this recall is 14113 for the ignition lock cylinder and key replacement, and 14133 for only key replacements. Note: Until a vehicle has been remedied, owners and operators are advised that when exiting, to be sure that the vehicle is in "Park," or in the case of a manual transmission, that the vehicle is in the "Reverse" position and the parking brake is engaged.
2014-02-10
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on February 10, 2014 that they are recalling 619,122 model year 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, and 2007 Pontiac G5 vehicles. On February 25, 2014, GM increased the recall to include an additional 748,024 model year 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR and Pontiac Solstice vehicles and 2003-2007 Saturn Ion vehicles and 2007 Saturn Sky vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine. On March 27, 2014, GM notified the agency that the defective ignition switches may have been used as service replacement parts on other vehicles, and as a result GM will be recalling certain model year 2008-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, Saturn Sky, and Pontiac G5 and Solstice, and 2008-2011 Chevrolet HHR vehicles. The part numbers for the service parts are 10392423 (a/k/a ACDelco D1461F), 10392737, 15857948, 15854953, 15896640, and 25846762. This expansion represents an additional 823,788 vehicles.
  • Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. An interim notification was issued to owners of 2007 and earlier models on March 10, 2014, informing them of the safety defect. Owners of 2008 and later vehicles will be mailed an interim letter on April 21, 2014. All affected owners will receive another letter once parts are available. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac at 1-800-762-2737 or Saturn at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for the initial recall is 13454 and 14063 for the expansion. GM’s recall number for the vehicles that may have received the replacement parts is 14092. Note: Until the recall repairs have been performed, it is very important that customers remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the vehicle key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. Always wear your seatbelt.

Negative 2006 Chevrolet Hhr car reviews

  1. Michael Hills 2024-07-29

Although the exterior of the vehicle is attractive and unique, our experience with it has been marred by multiple warranty problems. We have had to replace the AC compressor, hub bearing, shifter, and deal with a significant water leak through the cowl seal. Additionally, the interior materials are not durable and show dirt easily. Despite these issues, I still enjoy driving the car. However, it may not be the most reliable option for daily commuting.

  2. Osvaldo Anderson 2024-05-04

So far, I'm really enjoying my HHR!

  3. Jayden Denesik 2024-03-28

Although I like the overall looks and performance of my HHR, I am disappointed with the various electrical issues I had to put up with during the cold weather months this past winter. Issues with HVAC lights blinking on and off, battery going dead three different times for no reason, rear wiper motor having to be replaced for intermittent operation, windows that freeze and will not open after the car has been warmed up for 45 minutes, and last but not least, snow and ice build up at the front door which rubs the paint when opening the door. Despite these issues, I am confident in my decision to replace this car after driving for just 10,000 miles. As a loyal GM owner for over 30 years, I know that this is not indicative of the quality of their vehicles, and I look forward to finding a more reliable replacement.

Positive 2006 Chevrolet Hhr car reviews

Fun to drive! It's always a joy when people ask me what kind of car it is, and I love telling them. I was looking for a car with fenders, and this one had everything I needed. I considered the PT Cruiser, but it was too small for my liking. This car is exactly what I wanted!

  2. Haskell Huel 2024-11-21

I always enjoy the HHR's, but I'm not a fan of PT cruisers. However, I couldn't resist this amazing deal on a 2006 model for only $13,000. Although the door molding could be improved and made less cheesy, I'm extremely satisfied with the car. The visibility is different, but with minor adjustments to how you use your vision for everyday driving, it's not impossible. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase and grateful that I got it.

  3. Robin Franecki 2024-11-08

I've had lots of cars and I think this may be my favorite one so far. I got the bright orange metallic and I love it! The interior design, outside appearance, drivability, and acceleration are all so much fun.

  4. Ernie Haley 2024-10-17

Hi there! I've been driving my HHR for over a year now and it's been quite an adventure! While I've had a few issues with the signal lights and windshield seal, I've found that the car is still a blast to drive. I've even added some 18

  5. Carson Shields 2024-10-09

I really enjoy driving my 2006 HHR. It has many standard features that would usually cost extra on other cars. However, I have had some issues since owning it, such as having to get the keys reprogrammed, the radio making noise when turned off and popping when turned on (which required reprogramming), and having to replace the gear shift because it wasn't unlocking the doors when put out of gear. Additionally, it has been in the shop twice for an oil leak, and although the gasket has been replaced, it still leaks a puddle of oil when sitting. Despite these issues, I have only driven 29,000 miles in my vehicle.
