The Chevrolet HHR (an initialism for Heritage High Roof) is a retro-styled, high-roofed, five-door, five-passenger, front-wheel drive wagon designed by Bryan Nesbitt and launched by the American automaker Chevrolet at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show as a 2006 model.

The HHR shares the GM Delta platform with the Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5, and Saturn Ion. Chevrolet also marketed a panel van variant of the HHR beginning in 2007. Assembled in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico and marketed throughout North America, production of the HHR ended in May 2011. The HHR was replaced in the U.S. by the Chevrolet Captiva Sport. This was a rebadged version of the Opel Antara. However, the Captiva Sport was only available as a fleet vehicle and was not available new to the general public.

Design

The vehicle's design was inspired by the late-1940s/early 1950s Chevrolet cars and trucks, specifically the 1947 Chevrolet Suburban and Advance Design pickups, with large, square fender flares and a hemispherical grille. The design of the HHR has been credited to Bryan Nesbitt who was a former designer at Chrysler where he was the lead designer of the Chrysler PT Cruiser. Nesbitt was recruited by GM to join its design staff and served for a time as the chief designer of the Chevrolet brand. The HHR had a cargo-carrying capacity of 62.7 cubic feet (1.78 m3). All models had a flat-load floor (passenger models have 60/40 split bench) and fold-flat front passenger seat. For the 2007 model year, it was available in four trim levels; LS, LT, 2LT, and Special Edition. A panel van variant was also made available in 2007 for only the LT trim and became available on all trim levels in 2008. A "Half Panel" (RPO code AA5) rear quarter window delete option was available in the 2008 to 2010 model years.

BUDDY LLOYD'S LAKEVIEW AUTOMOTIVE AT 4757 SANG RUN ROAD IN MCENRY, MD 21541, SAID IT WOULD COST ABOUT $2,000 TO FIX BECAUSE OF THE EXTENT OF THE CORROSION AND THE CHAEP MATERIALS USED. IN ADDITION, THE FUEL LINES ARE LOCATED UNDERNEATH OTHER MAJOR PARTS AND WOULD HAVE TO BE TAKEN OFF TO GET TO THE FUEL LINES. THE MECHANIC SAID AT ANY MOMENT IF I HIT A BUMP THAT THE GAS COULD EMPTY THE TANK AND POSSIBLY CATCH FIRE!

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-15
  • VIN: 3GCDA05D38S
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Needless to say, General Motors has dealt with their share of recalls lately and while much of the GM recall news has been devoted to the ignition failures which have forced new CEO Mary Barra to stand before the US Government, this new recall has nothing to do with the ignition cylinder failures. Although the ignition problems can cause a steering issue and some of the vehicles included in the ignition recall are also included in this new recall, this recall pertains specifically to the power steering system. It seems that in the 1.3 million affected vehicles, one or more components of the electric power steering assist system could fail and when that happens, the car will not have the same level of power assist. The General Motors statement announcing this recall is a bit on the vague side in terms of explaining exactly what is causing this loss of power assist, but the automaker has explained that it could be due to a problem with the power steering motor, the steering column assembly, the power steering control unit or a combination of the power steering column and the power steering control unit. Regardless of which of those components fail, it will become much more difficult to steer the car at low speeds, although when driving at higher speeds it may almost be unnoticeable. However, with the increased possibility of accidents, GM isn’t taking any chances so they have made the decision to add these 1.3 million cars to their already lengthy list of recalled models. My 2008 HHR is not listed in any recalls by it's VIN

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-02-10
  • VIN: 3GNCA23D18S
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Purchased vehicle in Sep 2021. After 4 months of purchase, muffler became loose from exhaust after hitting a pothole on highway and, having a mechanical background, I repaired the exhaust by placing a solid stainless steel exhaust sleeve around the weak area and tac welding it. Within a month, I began to smell a rich fuel odor after every trip. I jacked up vehicle and found a fuel leak within insulated area just left of exhaust. I also located another small exhaust leak and repaired it as best as possible with an exhaust wrap, then took it to an exhaust repair shop. I was told fuel leak had to be repaired before exhaust repairs could be done. Mechanic said HHRs we're well known for fuel line corrosion due to poor design and eventually leaking. He said he has turned away many HHRs and Cobalts for this problem over the last 2-3 years.

STEERING,SUSPENSION,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-05
  • VIN: 3GNDA23P48S
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Steering gets very stiff and sometimes locks up when turning left or right in a curve at highway speeds. Had dealer check it and they said they replaced steering motor. Did not correct problem. Made an appointment to check again but was told I would incur charges. I have had it to several mechanic shops and we cannot find anything loose or failing. In a parked position it locks up completely until you start rolling. Afraid steering is going to lock up in a curve and cause harm to driver and passengers. It is available for inspection. It has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police or insurance. Has no warning lights or messages pertaining to problem. The problem first appeared approximately 6 months ago.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-04-04
  • VIN: 3GCDA35P88S
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Fuel tank assembly developed a fuel leak at or around its integrated tank vents creating a strong fuel smell inside and outside the vehicle. THIS IS NOT A RUSTED FUEL LINE PROBLEM. This poses a fire hazard if the vehicle were to come into contact with any spark or flames. This also poses a health hazard from exposure to toxic fumes inside and outside the vehicle. This condition did not trigger any warning messages from the onboard vehicle computer. The seal between the tank vents and fuel tank is made by the manufacturer and is unserviceable. I attempted to seal the leaks with adhesive but was unsuccessful. I then purchased a used replacement fuel tank from an auto recycler and discovered it also has this issue. I believe this to be a design defect that will lead to an unsafe condition in these vehicles. I can make these components available for inspection. I have not had the issue inspected by any other parties as that would involve further costs.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-08-08
  • VIN: 3GCDA15D48S
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I noticed a strong odor of gasoline and took the HHR to my local mechanic. He diagnosed it as a rusted fuel line caused by the proximity of a heat shield that traps water.. He was able to repir it by splicing in a section of the line. A bout a yer later the line was leaking again and this time there is not enough line left to splice that isn;t rusted. Obviously this is a danger ranging from leaking gasoline hitting a hot exhaust to a passerby discarding a lit cigarette near the leak and blowing themselves and my car to Kingdome Come. A Check engine light comes on periodically, but is only partially indicative of the gas leak as a possibility. This is a safety issue for both the owner and anyone who might happen by with a lit object

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-08-12
  • VIN: 3GNCA53P78S
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Fuel lines leaking in front of drivers side rear tire. Lines run inside of a channel that has a protective wrap over them, but is very close to part of the exhaust pipe. Fuel line had corroded inside of protective wrap. Only leaks when the engine is running and fuel system under pressure. Fuel could have hit hot exhaust pipe and caused a fire or explosion. Apparently this is a common problem with the Chevy HHR with multiple cases having already been reported. Had the car repair at our local Chevy dealer. Cost of removing and replacing the fuel lines was $1,307.00. The only indications of the problem was the smell of fuel near the rear tire and a puddle of fuel under the car when engine was shut off. Frame cross member was also wet from fuel shooting out of end of protective wrap.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-05-15
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 3gnca63x28s
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Power steering went out completely causing me to swerve on the highway to side of road. The steering locked up and it was raining and I would of crashed had anyone else been on the highway. I was going about 55 mph at the time. I then proceeded to CAREFULLY at about 30 mph force my car to drive another half mile to nearest exit ramp. The entire time I was driving in the middle of the lanes and a huge liability as far as safety is concerned. Thankfully I made it with no harm to myself vehicle or anyone else. I pulled over to side of road and slept in car till the rain stopped. Prior to this I backed into a fence when the steering failed backing into a carport resulting in body damage to front end under left headlight. Months before I had asked the Chevy dealership to diagnose issue and they found nothing wrong as in the beginning the car would still steer at its own leisure. The light didn't come on when they looked at it. After the night in the rain I have taken the fuse outta the power steering part and just manually steer. This should be replaced as it is a common issue to ALL HHR. Mine isn't covered as it is an SS but clearly it should be covered by a recall. Hopefully I don't die before this is taken care of.

2008 Chevrolet Hhr recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2008 Chevrolet Hhr.

2014-04-30
  • Manufacturer: UCI-FRAM Group
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
  • Summary: UCI-FRAM Group is recalling certain LS1328 ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1328, Duralast LS1328, Airtex 1S6097, and Carquest 53-27479, and LS1497 Ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1497, Duralast LS1497, Airtex 1S10961, and Carquest 53-27967, for use on various General Motors model and model year vehicles during repair and replacement of the original ignition switch. The weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the affected ignition switches to move out of the run position, turning off the engine and disabling the air bags.
  • Consequence: If the ignition switch moves from the run position to accessory, the car would stall and the air bags will not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of personal injury to the occupants.
  • Remedy: UCI-FRAM Group has notified its purchasers to quarantine and return all inventory. Any switches already installed in vehicles will be replaced by GM dealers as part of NHTSA recall 14V-047, free of charge. UCI-Fram's purchasers should contact UCI-FRAM Group at 1-800-890-2075. GM vehicle owners requiring additional information on that recall campaign should contact GM at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac) or 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn).
2014-04-10
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2006-2011 Chevrolet HHR, 2007-2010 Pontiac G5, 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice, 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, and 2007-2010 Saturn Sky vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "Off" position.
  • Consequence: If the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "off" position, the vehicle could roll away: (a) for an automatic transmission, if the transmission is not in the "Park" position; or (b) for a manual transmission, if the parking brake is not engaged and the transmission is not in the "Reverse" position. This potential for rollaway increases the risk for a crash and occupant or pedestrian injuries.
  • Remedy: General Motors will notify owners, and for vehicles that were built with the defective ignition cylinder and have not previously had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will replace the ignition cylinder and cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. For vehicles that were built with the redesigned ignition cylinder or had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Chevrolet owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac owners at 1-800-762-2737, and Saturn owners at 1-800-553-6000. General Motors' number for this recall is 14113 for the ignition lock cylinder and key replacement, and 14133 for only key replacements. Note: Until a vehicle has been remedied, owners and operators are advised that when exiting, to be sure that the vehicle is in "Park," or in the case of a manual transmission, that the vehicle is in the "Reverse" position and the parking brake is engaged.
2014-02-10
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on February 10, 2014 that they are recalling 619,122 model year 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, and 2007 Pontiac G5 vehicles. On February 25, 2014, GM increased the recall to include an additional 748,024 model year 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR and Pontiac Solstice vehicles and 2003-2007 Saturn Ion vehicles and 2007 Saturn Sky vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine. On March 27, 2014, GM notified the agency that the defective ignition switches may have been used as service replacement parts on other vehicles, and as a result GM will be recalling certain model year 2008-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, Saturn Sky, and Pontiac G5 and Solstice, and 2008-2011 Chevrolet HHR vehicles. The part numbers for the service parts are 10392423 (a/k/a ACDelco D1461F), 10392737, 15857948, 15854953, 15896640, and 25846762. This expansion represents an additional 823,788 vehicles.
  • Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. An interim notification was issued to owners of 2007 and earlier models on March 10, 2014, informing them of the safety defect. Owners of 2008 and later vehicles will be mailed an interim letter on April 21, 2014. All affected owners will receive another letter once parts are available. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac at 1-800-762-2737 or Saturn at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for the initial recall is 13454 and 14063 for the expansion. GM’s recall number for the vehicles that may have received the replacement parts is 14092. Note: Until the recall repairs have been performed, it is very important that customers remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the vehicle key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. Always wear your seatbelt.

Negative 2008 Chevrolet Hhr car reviews

Bought brand new in 2008 and still have it in 2016 with only 29k miles on it. Although it has had some issues, it has been garage kept. Unfortunately, the A/C has quit working and the lift gate won't open without using a screwdriver to unlatch it. Additionally, the turn signal will not self-cancel and the mpg is not as good as claimed. It can be difficult to see traffic lights without almost laying in the passenger seat and the sun visor won't stay in place. Despite these problems, I appreciate my experience with Chevrolet.

Hi there! I noticed that you were disappointed with the gas mileage and space of your HHR compared to your previous Passat wagon. That can be frustrating! Have you considered any other options that might better suit your needs? Also, I completely understand your frustration with the window switches being in an unusual spot. It can take some time to get used to. Is there anything else about the car that you do like?

If you're experiencing brake issues with your 2008 Chevy HHR 2LT with the 2.4 engine, it's important to address the problem with confidence and assertiveness. Despite previous attempts to fix the issue, the brake pedal continues to go to the floor, making emergency stops a scary prospect. To ensure your safety and the safety of others on the road, it's crucial to seek out a solution that will effectively address the problem. Consider consulting with a trusted mechanic or brake specialist who can provide expert advice and assistance in resolving the issue.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my car. It's a spunky little thing that's really fun to drive, but I've noticed that the mileage is only around 26 or so. Unfortunately, I've had to replace the front brakes, steering motor, and column, and I'm currently experiencing some front suspension noise. Additionally, the 17 inch Alloy wheels look great, but they do make the ride a bit rough. I'm a bit concerned about the reliability of the car in the long term due to these mechanical issues, but overall it's been a fun ride!

I'm glad to hear that you've had a chance to take your car on a couple of nice road trips, covering about 2000 miles so far. During your first trip, you encountered a variety of 2-lane roads with varying altitudes and lots of corners. I'm happy to hear that the car is very confidence-inspiring, with excellent grip and crisp steering response. It's great to know that the electric power steering didn't affect your experience negatively. The only handling negative you mentioned was the amount of corner lean when pressing, but considering the car's mission in life, it's not at all surprising. During your second trip, you spent 90% of the time on the freeway, using cruise control. I'm impressed that you averaged 28.5 mpg over two tanks with average speeds of 75 mph. Keep up the good work!

Congratulations on your new purchase of the SS HHR! It's great to hear that you're enjoying the turbo power for passing and climbing hills. Although, it's a shame that the front bucket seats are not as comfortable as you would like them to be. I hope that you can find a way to make them work for you on long trips. It's impressive that you were able to get 25.2 mpg on your 1,200 mile trip last weekend, even though the tailpipe got carboned up and the oil got dirty. I understand your concern about the oil being overfilled from the factory, but hopefully, it was just a one-time issue. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

Hi there! I was on the hunt for a retro style car and had my eyes set on PT Cruisers. However, I stumbled upon the local Chevy store and was pleasantly surprised to find out that they were making the SS version. I test drove both and I must say, the turbo is definitely worth the extra bucks. The 5-speed makes it a really fun car to drive. Just make sure to have a good grip on the steering wheel during hard acceleration as there is a lot of torque steer. I noticed that they have relocated the window switches, which is a nice touch. Although, I do wish that the cup holders were covered by an armrest. The only issue I have is that my right leg rests against the center console and it can be uncomfortable. Other than that, I really like the car!

  3. Maximus Bednar 2024-11-13

Bought new. This car is so much fun! Unfortunately, at about 12k, I experienced a major electrical problem that took months to resolve. The car would die at random, even at high speeds! It was a scary experience and I almost got into two accidents on I-95. However, I'm grateful that the issue was eventually resolved, and I'm happy to say that I have confidence in my car again. Although I was disappointed with the customer service I received at three different dealerships, I'm glad that the problem is now fixed. Overall, I'm very happy with my car now!

Your 2008 HHR LS is a real head-turner in 'orange'! The black interior is sleek and stays looking clean for longer than lighter colors. All the controls are super easy to use, including the air conditioning, radio, windows, and more. While the fuel economy isn't quite as good as advertised, it's still okay. The 2.2 engine is fine for city driving, but you do have to give it a bit more gas when merging onto the highway, which can be a bit disappointing. I would have preferred a larger engine, but we all learn from our mistakes. The large, easy-to-open tailgate and spacious storage area are a big plus, making it so easy to load and unload. The cabin is pretty quiet, as is the engine, so far... fingers crossed! All in all, I really like this vehicle and would definitely recommend it for the price. Just make sure to go to a good dealer and don't get ripped off like I did!

Driving this car in the snow can be quite scary. Even at slow speeds, it tends to slide a lot. To counter this, I've had to put heavy items in the back, as if I were driving a pickup truck. The small windows make it difficult to see traffic signals and there are a lot of blind spots due to the design of the front windows. Additionally, I experienced rattling and shaking with the sway bar when braking. If I had to do it over again, I would have looked a little harder.
