The Chevrolet HHR (an initialism for Heritage High Roof) is a retro-styled, high-roofed, five-door, five-passenger, front-wheel drive wagon designed by Bryan Nesbitt and launched by the American automaker Chevrolet at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show as a 2006 model.

The HHR shares the GM Delta platform with the Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5, and Saturn Ion. Chevrolet also marketed a panel van variant of the HHR beginning in 2007. Assembled in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico and marketed throughout North America, production of the HHR ended in May 2011. The HHR was replaced in the U.S. by the Chevrolet Captiva Sport. This was a rebadged version of the Opel Antara. However, the Captiva Sport was only available as a fleet vehicle and was not available new to the general public.

Design

The vehicle's design was inspired by the late-1940s/early 1950s Chevrolet cars and trucks, specifically the 1947 Chevrolet Suburban and Advance Design pickups, with large, square fender flares and a hemispherical grille. The design of the HHR has been credited to Bryan Nesbitt who was a former designer at Chrysler where he was the lead designer of the Chrysler PT Cruiser. Nesbitt was recruited by GM to join its design staff and served for a time as the chief designer of the Chevrolet brand. The HHR had a cargo-carrying capacity of 62.7 cubic feet (1.78 m3). All models had a flat-load floor (passenger models have 60/40 split bench) and fold-flat front passenger seat. For the 2007 model year, it was available in four trim levels; LS, LT, 2LT, and Special Edition. A panel van variant was also made available in 2007 for only the LT trim and became available on all trim levels in 2008. A "Half Panel" (RPO code AA5) rear quarter window delete option was available in the 2008 to 2010 model years.

Common 2007 Chevrolet Hhr problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 2007 Chevrolet HHR, several common problems have been reported:

  1. Steering Issues: One of the most prevalent problems with the 2007 Chevrolet HHR is steering-related. More than half of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration complaints for this model year involve steering issues, with drivers reporting power steering failure at various speeds. This issue can pose a significant safety risk as it affects the vehicle's handling and control.
  2. Interior Door Handle Snapping: Another common problem reported by owners is the snapping off of interior door handles. This issue can be inconvenient and potentially dangerous, as it may hinder the driver or passengers from exiting the vehicle easily, especially in emergency situations.
  3. Airbag Failures: The 2007 Chevrolet HHR has experienced airbag failures, with recalls in 2008 and 2014 for airbag malfunctions. Despite these recalls, drivers have reported airbag failure as late as early 2021. Airbags are critical safety features in vehicles, and their failure to deploy or function properly can increase the risk of injury in the event of a collision.
  4. Recalls and Investigations: While the 2007 Chevrolet HHR has just 5 recalls on file, issues like steering problems and airbag failures have been highlighted. It's important to note that these recalls and complaints indicate potential safety concerns and reliability issues that owners should be aware of and address promptly.

These common problems with the 2007 Chevrolet HHR highlight safety, reliability, and functionality issues that owners have faced. Addressing these issues promptly through proper maintenance and repairs is crucial to ensure the safety and longevity of the vehicle.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-19
  • VIN: 3gnda13dx7s

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-07-28
  • VIN: 3gnda13d97s
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: The power steering intermittently (but quite regularly) goes out. The "power steering" warning also comes up on the display panel on the dash. If vehicle is restarted, the power steering seems to resolve itself again but only temporarily. This problem is becoming much more frequent. This is a safety issue because without the power steering in working order, the steering wheel becomes difficult to turn and this happens not only on the road but also on the highway as well when the vehicle is going 70 miles per hour. We have not had the vehicle serviced or looked at for this issue. It has been ongoing for several months but seems to be getting worse/more frequent.

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-17
  • VIN: 3GNDA33PX7S
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: While driving the vehicle approximately 45mph, the power steering light came on the dash. While driving straight was not an issue, attempting to pull off the road was difficult. I checked owners manual which told me to take it to a dealer. This in itself was bothersome. I opened the hood and called my mechanic, who told me to check fuses. I replaced the fuse and the vehicle was fine for about 4 weeks, but once again driving 30-35 mph, the light came on the dashboard. I have saved both replaced fuses, I’m wondering after reading other reports whether the fuses are even blown? Either way, this is not a safe situation to be driving any speed without power steering. Mine is a 2007 Chevrolet HHR with approximately 163 k miles

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-04-25
  • VIN: 3GCDA15D37S
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: My 2007 HHR (I also hve a 2008 with the same issue as this) was being configured with replacement front seats and after completion the mechanic/installer informed me that there was a strong gas leak on the driver's side. Upon looking at the car a very noticeable puddle of gas was on the ground. I had the car moved to my home and it is currently unable to use due to the gas leak. This is ridiculous. Everything I have read points to Chevy cheaping out and not using non-corroding metal lines or nylon and the proximity of the heat shield which traps the moisture and corrodes the fuel lines. This REALLY needs to be recalled at Chevy's expense as it is a manufacturer's error. I have no idea if a prior situation had been addressed by the previous owner (commercial computer repair shop).

  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: THERE IS A RECALL FOR 2008-2009 HHRS FOR FUEL LINE CORROSION. I AM HAVING GAS PUDDLES AND DRIPS FROM LEAKING FUEL LINES NEAR THE LEFT REAR WHEEL WELL, NEAR THE EXHAUST PIPE AND MUFFLER. WHICH IS THE EXACT SAME ISSUE AS DESCRIBED IN THE 2008-2009 HHR RECALL. I HAVE TRIED SPEAKING WITH GMS CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE. ALL THEY DID WAS TELL ME OVER AND OVER AGAIN THAT MY HHR ISN'T INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. 🙄 I KNOW THIS...THAT'S THE PROBLEM. THE DEALERSHIP REFERRED ME TO CHEVY'S CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE...CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE KEPT PUSHING BACK THAT I NEEDED TO TALK TO THE DEALERSHIP'S CEM. NO ONE WANTS TO HELP WITH THIS SITUATION...JUST PUSHING ME TO TALK TO SOMEONE ELSE. SO THAT IS WHY I CAME HERE SO THAT SOMEONE WILL LISTEN TO THIS SAFETY CONCERN THAT THEY KNOW THEY HAVE BASED UPON FUEL LINE RECALLS FOR CERTAIN MODELS. I BELIEVE THEY NEED TO BROADEN THEIR RECALL TO INCLUDE OTHER HHRS.

2007 Chevrolet Hhr recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2007 Chevrolet Hhr.

2014-04-30
  • Manufacturer: UCI-FRAM Group
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
  • Summary: UCI-FRAM Group is recalling certain LS1328 ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1328, Duralast LS1328, Airtex 1S6097, and Carquest 53-27479, and LS1497 Ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1497, Duralast LS1497, Airtex 1S10961, and Carquest 53-27967, for use on various General Motors model and model year vehicles during repair and replacement of the original ignition switch. The weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the affected ignition switches to move out of the run position, turning off the engine and disabling the air bags.
  • Consequence: If the ignition switch moves from the run position to accessory, the car would stall and the air bags will not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of personal injury to the occupants.
  • Remedy: UCI-FRAM Group has notified its purchasers to quarantine and return all inventory. Any switches already installed in vehicles will be replaced by GM dealers as part of NHTSA recall 14V-047, free of charge. UCI-Fram's purchasers should contact UCI-FRAM Group at 1-800-890-2075. GM vehicle owners requiring additional information on that recall campaign should contact GM at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac) or 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn).
2014-04-10
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2006-2011 Chevrolet HHR, 2007-2010 Pontiac G5, 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice, 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, and 2007-2010 Saturn Sky vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "Off" position.
  • Consequence: If the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "off" position, the vehicle could roll away: (a) for an automatic transmission, if the transmission is not in the "Park" position; or (b) for a manual transmission, if the parking brake is not engaged and the transmission is not in the "Reverse" position. This potential for rollaway increases the risk for a crash and occupant or pedestrian injuries.
  • Remedy: General Motors will notify owners, and for vehicles that were built with the defective ignition cylinder and have not previously had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will replace the ignition cylinder and cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. For vehicles that were built with the redesigned ignition cylinder or had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Chevrolet owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac owners at 1-800-762-2737, and Saturn owners at 1-800-553-6000. General Motors' number for this recall is 14113 for the ignition lock cylinder and key replacement, and 14133 for only key replacements. Note: Until a vehicle has been remedied, owners and operators are advised that when exiting, to be sure that the vehicle is in "Park," or in the case of a manual transmission, that the vehicle is in the "Reverse" position and the parking brake is engaged.
2014-02-10
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on February 10, 2014 that they are recalling 619,122 model year 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, and 2007 Pontiac G5 vehicles. On February 25, 2014, GM increased the recall to include an additional 748,024 model year 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR and Pontiac Solstice vehicles and 2003-2007 Saturn Ion vehicles and 2007 Saturn Sky vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine. On March 27, 2014, GM notified the agency that the defective ignition switches may have been used as service replacement parts on other vehicles, and as a result GM will be recalling certain model year 2008-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, Saturn Sky, and Pontiac G5 and Solstice, and 2008-2011 Chevrolet HHR vehicles. The part numbers for the service parts are 10392423 (a/k/a ACDelco D1461F), 10392737, 15857948, 15854953, 15896640, and 25846762. This expansion represents an additional 823,788 vehicles.
  • Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. An interim notification was issued to owners of 2007 and earlier models on March 10, 2014, informing them of the safety defect. Owners of 2008 and later vehicles will be mailed an interim letter on April 21, 2014. All affected owners will receive another letter once parts are available. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac at 1-800-762-2737 or Saturn at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for the initial recall is 13454 and 14063 for the expansion. GM’s recall number for the vehicles that may have received the replacement parts is 14092. Note: Until the recall repairs have been performed, it is very important that customers remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the vehicle key. Even though you've only had the vehicle for a short time, we're glad to hear that you're very satisfied with it. We understand that you researched the vehicle for several months, and we're happy to hear that it proved to be the best vehicle for your needs. It's great to hear that you're getting good gas mileage (30+ MPG) and that the comfort is excellent, especially since you drive 72 miles one-way to work on a daily basis.

I've had a few close calls due to the blind spot caused by the thick windshield pillars. It would be great if the windshield was bigger, as I often have to slouch down in my seat to see under the visor. In the 2009 model, GM moved the window controls to the door, but unfortunately, they are now in an inconvenient spot in front of the gear shift. Additionally, the cup holders are too close together to fit larger drinks, and the armrest gets in the way when trying to reach for your drink. It would be helpful to have a console and more cubby holes for storage, as there is a lot of wasted space that could be utilized. Lastly, the storage in the door is too small to accommodate drinks.

My HHR LT is a great car to drive, but the exterior body has deteriorated significantly. Despite having less than 28,000 miles on it, the rims are flaking off and there is no paint left in front of the rear wheel wells, which has already caused rusting. Although I took it back to the dealer when it had under 10,000 miles, they did not provide any assistance. Additionally, I have already had to replace the sway bar links. While the gas mileage of 25 average is not ideal, it is still a decent car. However, it should be noted that the handling is poor in winter conditions.

I purchased my HHR in November 2008 with 32,000 miles on it, and it came with a 12,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty from Chevy. Despite the repeated failure of my wipers during rainstorms, the dealership has been uncooperative in honoring the warranty. Despite having two recalls for my car, the dealership has refused to schedule repairs, claiming they are unnecessary. Additionally, my car did not come with runnerboards or mud flaps, which has resulted in damage to the paint. I am confident that the dealership will take responsibility for these issues and honor the warranty that came with my car.

In March 2011, I experienced an issue with my shifter assembly when a small plastic tab broke, preventing me from removing the key. Unfortunately, this required a repair cost of $357.87 plus a disposal fee. I still have the old one. Then, on April 6th, the front door handle also broke due to being made of plastic. Needless to say, I was not pleased.

This car has been an absolute blast! It has taken me on two trips from Massachusetts to California, covering at least 16,000 miles, as well as a journey to the Florida Keys and back. It has tackled the Southwest desert, mountain passes, and extreme temperatures ranging from 107 degrees in Utah to minus temps in the Northeast, all without a single issue. Even in stop-and-go traffic through Washington D.C., this car has performed flawlessly!

  2. Jaydon Hahn 2024-11-13

We really enjoyed driving it! The cup holders could be better placed and the arm rests could be longer, but we do love the shape of the door handles. They're easy to grip, even for those with hand problems. Just a word of caution - be careful when closing the hatch with your hip. Unfortunately, my husband accidentally dented it that way. We're a bit disappointed that we have to get bodywork done on our HHR with only 1000 miles on it!

  3. Milford Sporer 2024-10-21

Out of the 7 cars we looked at in this class, we found the HHR to be the best. What really sold us was its appealing styling, quiet ride, adequate power, nice interior layout with awesome cargo space, and plenty of room in the back seats. We've been using this car for our everyday work and have driven over 4000 miles on it. It has exceeded our expectations. Living in the Northeast, we find the remote starting feature to be one of the best. It's very nice to get into a warm car on these cold mornings. Additionally, getting 30 MPG is very impressive. Since we're both over 50, we prefer a soft, quiet ride over a stiff, harder one like the Mazda 3 5 door had. The HHR's fit and finish is also very impressive.

I've been driving my used HHR for 13 months now. It's a Heritage High Roof model, but sometimes it's hard to see out the windshield at red lights. Overall, I really like the car (fingers crossed!). My family members always want to drive it instead of their own cars. Even my mother, who has trouble getting in and out of other cars, finds it easy to use. At first, I was worried about the size since I've always owned a van, but on a recent camping trip, I was able to fit everything comfortably. The only thing I wish it had were roof racks. I've recommended this car to friends and family because of its affordability and reliability so far.

Hello! As a fellow Suburban owner, I completely understand your admiration for the design of the HHR. I think it's great that the vehicle has a '49 Suburban take, which gives it a unique and classic look. Additionally, the high seating position and easy entry and exit make it a comfortable ride for all ages. I agree that the build and quality of this vehicle is top-notch, and it's great to see that the assembly in Mexico is producing such great results. Thank you for sharing your experience with the 2LT model, which unfortunately isn't listed as an option above. It's great to hear that the 2LT has a larger sway bar and stiffer suspension, which gives it a sportier feel and better handling. Overall, it sounds like you're really enjoying your HHR and I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts with us.
